PERFORMANCE NOTES

Abel Paúl 2014

1) INSTRUMENTS & OBJECTS

+Tenor sax.

+Percussion-An aluminium sheet of the following size: 50cm*50cm*0,5mm. These sheets can be found at any well stocked hardware store.

-A mini vibration speaker (recommended brand and model: Auvisio Mini-Lautsprecher "VI-88") and a conventional mp3 player. The vibration speaker

should be stuck to the metal sheet's surface. The speakers incorporate a sticker to fix them to any object/surface. Use this adhesive area to stick the speaker

to the sheet. The audio file played by the mp3 player will be projected onto the metal sheet and will be modified acoustically by the sheet's changing positions

and bending degrees. For pictures and more information check the following link: www.abelpaul.net/materials2.htm-A small glass sheet (approximate size: A4).

-A small hard plastic box lid (such as the lid of a sewing needle's box). This plastic lid should be rubbed on the glass sheet producing high overtones

and a delicate chirp-like effect. For pictures and more information check the following link: www.abelpaul.net/materials2.htm-Small litophone. This should be made of a small slate board (or of any other stone) and two pebbles (small and medium size). The pebbles should be rubbed

on the board, producing two distinct tones.

-2 wine glasses filled with water. These glasses are bowed and should be tuned to the following pitches:

-Crotales.-4 temple blocks (pitched in different tones).

-2 percussion stands are needed. One exclusively for the metal sheet and the other one for the rest of instruments. The metal sheet must be played on a

piece of molton, cloth or any soft material to avoid excessive reverberation.

Beaters and mallets:

-Superball: "Professional" superballs may not work as the stick is generally too rigid. A homemade superball is recommended. It must be made by cutting a

rubber bouncing ball in half and sticking one half onto a flexible, thin wooden stick (ideally a brochette stick, around 25cm long). Ball's diameter: 3 cm or smaller.

-Double bass bow.

-conventional mallets (soft, hard)

(I)

(II)

A tea spoon or small stick is needed to stir the water.

+Piano

-A mini vibration speaker (recommended brand and model: auvisio Mini-Lautsprecher "VI-88") and a conventional mp3 player are needed. The vibration

speaker is placed and slid on different strings of the piano during the piece. The audio file played by the mp3 player will be 'projected' onto the strings. The speaker box may be

fixed to the piano stand with a piece of blu-tack so that it does not move throughout the performance.

For pictures and more information check the following link: www.abelpaul.net/materials2.htm-A small hard-plastic box lid (such as the lid of a sewing needle's box). This plastic lid should be rubbed against the piano's keyboard lid producing high overtones

and a delicate chirp-like effect. This technique will only work with pianos whose surface is completely smooth and varnished. In case the surface is rougher, a small

glass sheet (i.e. a pocket mirror) may be fixed to the piano. In such case, rub the plastic lid against the glass.

For pictures and more information check the following link: www.abelpaul.net/materials2.htm-Soft toothbrush.

-A small piece of a bike's internal air chamber tyre (see www.abelpaul.net/materials2.htm)

-A glass nailfile with a very soft grit.

-Superball: "Professional" superballs may not work as the stick is generally too rigid. A homemade superball is recommended. It must be made by cutting a

rubber bouncing ball in half and sticking one half onto a flexible, thin wooden stick (ideally a brochette stick, around 25cm long). Ball's diameter: 3 cm or

smaller.

-A specific audio file is played by the mp3 players and projected by the mini vibration speakers at different moments throughout the piece. This audio file is definedby a recording of the first sax multiphonic of the piece, looped several times. The mp3 file may be downloaded here: www.abelpaul.net/materials2.htm ("audio file" link). Load this file onto the mp3 players used for the performance.

4) TECHNIQUES AND NOTATION

TENOR SAX

-Fingerings for multiphonics and bisbigliando are directly indicated in the score. These fingerings have been extracted from the following book:Weiss, Netti, The Techniques of Saxophone Playing, Kassel: Bärenreiter, 2010.Alternative fingerings for the same result may be used in case more suitable options are found.

Air tones (pitchless) with the indicated fingerings. The nature of the articulation is indicated by consonants on top of the note ("t" or "t-k").

PERCUSSION

+Mp3 player (or similar) & mini vibration speaker: before the performance check that the mp3 player is not set to sleep or hibernation mode. The mp3 file mentioned before should be uploaded prior to the performance. This file consists of a recording of the sax' first multiphonic looped several times (up to 20 minutes).

Only the play and pause buttons/commands need to be activated during the performance (note that in some devices such as ipods or smart phones the play and pause commands

coincide). Check that the mini vibration speaker is switched on before the performance.

Notation:

mp3 player

+Metal sheet. The metal sheet is mainly used in combination with the mini vibration speaker and mp3 player. The projected sounds are altered acoustically by the different positions of the metal

sheet. Occasionally, the sheet is also used independently (with the mp3 player in pause mode). Most of the techniques with the metal sheet (except actions with mallets/bow/

superball) allow very little variation in volume. The written dynamics should be understood are indicators of the action's intensity rather than signs of the actual sonic outcome.

Always prevent the mini speaker's cable from hitting the metal sheet. Notation:

Page 4: Geografía del pliegue

-Techniques with the metal sheet on the stand:

When the metal sheet is placed on the percussion stand (or table) it should be bent to the indicated degrees by pressing down the upper side. This is required in order to obtain diverse tones and/or glissandi. Bending positions (curvature) of the metal sheet on the stand:

(with the metal sheet's vertex pointing away from the performer)

= large (around 100º)=straight (180º) =small curvature (around 160º) = moderate (around 130º)

-Techniques holding the metal sheet from the left and right sides:

Transitions (glissandi) between 2 positions are indicated by arrows. Ex:

Pull left/right sides towards you and shake sheet in a very fast and light motion, generating a tremolo-like effect. The symbol above indicates the sheet's overalldegree of bending (pulling the sides towards you). These bending degrees apply also to standard, non-tremolo passages.

-Techniques holding the metal sheet from the upper side:

=gradual transitions between different positions.

-Bowed metal sheet:

This technique is performed with the sheet held from the upper side and with the sheet on the stand. The sheet should always be bowed on its upper edge.

=shake metal sheet in a delicate, irregular motion.

downbow

upbow

zig-zag bowing (discreet left-right, right-left motion of the bow, following the overall upbow or downbow direction).

-Metal sheet & superball.

Rub superball on the metal sheet. The trill line above indicates a slight oscillatory movement of the superball.

Balzato (bouncing): Rub the superball with very little pressure along the sheet's internal side producing a bouncing effect. Rub the superball upwards (from bottom to top). Control sheet bending with left hand.

-Metal sheet & mallets.

Rub mallet's wooden stick on the sheet's upper edge as fast as possible. Control sheet bending with left hand

+Glass sheet

Rub plastic box lid on the glass sheet producing high overtones and an unstable chirp-like effect. This technique allows little variation in dynamics.

The notated dynamics suggest the intensity of activity rather than the actual sonic outcome.

Notation:

Many actions take place on the piano strings. The particular strings and ranges used have been notated very accurately. Nevertheless, due to the varying internal layout of every instrument, some of the techniques(especially glissandi) may be challenged by obstacles(metal bars, etc.) In such cases, strive to negotiate these impediments in order

to achieve a result as close as possible to the notated one.

[ ] Place speaker on the indicated string

Speaker glissando. Rub the speaker on the strings very delicately, covering the indicated ranges in the indicated rhythm.

-Toothbrush

Two different surfaces of the toothbrush are used for the following techniques: the actual brush (indicated by the word "brush") and the the rigid, back side of the brush head (notated by the words "hard side").

simile

Rub the toothbrush on the indicated string/s in a lengthwise, discreet up and down alternate motion.

Toothbrush glissandi on the strings within the indicated ranges

Combination of the two previous techniques. Rub the toothbrush with a discreet up and down alternate motionfollowing a general descending/ascending direction within the indicated ranges. The toothbrush may be brushed at

an angle (neither completely longitudinal nor perpendicular to the string) in order to facilitate the descending/ascending

movement.

-Glass nail file

[ ] [ ]

Rub the nail file on the indicated string. This technique should be performed vertically, rubbing the nail file against the side of the string (the strings associatedwith this technique belong to the middle range of the piano, constituted in fact by 3 parallel steel wires. Thus, rub the nail file against the left or right wire, not

the middle one). When "tremolo" is notated, rub the glass nail against the string in a discreet, alternate up-down motion.

This technique should be performed very delicately. The notated dynamics suggest the intensity of activity rather than the actual sonic outcome.

Page 6: Geografía del pliegue

-Small piece of bike tyre

f

Rub the small fragment of bike tyre (internal air chamber) robustly on the indicated string so that the friction triggers a high, flageolet-like resulting tone (it sounds approximately 2 octaves and a minor seventh higher than the notated pitch).

-Superball

ppp

Rub superball on the keyboard lid, almost without pressure, bouncing.

Rub superball on the indicated string

-Hard-plastic box lid

5) SETUP

Rub hard-plastic lid on the keyboard lid (or on any other convinient surface of the instrument) producing high overtones and an unstable chirp-like effect. This technique allows little variation in dynamics. The written dynamics suggest the intensity of activity rather than the actual sonic outcome.
