Installation o Geolock barriers in trench

    Abcoude, The Netherlands

Vertical plastic barriers are used or both environmental and civil projects. Cora has many years expe-

rience in the manuacture and installation o Geolock barriers. With Geolock, Cora has realised projects in

Europe, North America and Asia. Geolock is used or the isolation o existing waste disposal sites and the

waterproong o dikes, dams and motorways in cuttings. Geolock has an innite number o applications and

is competitive with traditional materials. Wherever a horizontal underground fow o groundwater, contami-

nated or otherwise, has to be blocked, Geolock oers the optimal watertight solution.

    The Geolock technique

Geolock is a plastic waterproo barrier consisting o a patented lock construc-

tion made o extruded HDPE with an HDPE 2.0 mm membrane welded to

it. This lock construction guarantees optimal waterproofng, thus preventing

the leakage o groundwater, contaminated or otherwise. Geolock is not only

suitable or the isolation o contaminated soil, it can also be used in numerous

other waterproofng (seepage) constructions in civil engineering.

    Why Geolock?

The clean-up o contaminated soil is very expensive and not always techni-

cally easible. Removal or in-situ cleaning is oten not the most attractive

solution in the case o larger areas. An alternative in this case is the encap-

sulation o the contaminated soil, so that the contamination cannot spread

any urther. Partially in response to this problem, Cora B.V. developed the

    Geolock system.

    Installation of the Geolock system

Geolock can be installed with the aid o a steel plate that drives the panels

to the correct depth by means o a vibrating block. The system is only suit-

able or installation at a shallow depth in a relatively sot subsoil. In the case

o installation at greater depths a Bentonite wall is always constructed frst

in which the Geolock screen can be installed. The advantage o this method

is that installation is possible in almost every type o soil and to a deeper

    depth.

Applications of the Geolock technique include:

    > Vertical isolation o contaminated soil

    > Waterproo construction in civil engineering

    > Gasproo barrier in the (case o lower groundwater levels)

    Advantages of the Geolock system:

    > Fully waterproo and/or gastight, even on the underside

    > Flexibility in connection with possible settlement o the soil

    > Suitable or installation in all soil ty pes

    > Crack resistant

    > Chemically resistant

    > Long service lie

    > Suitable or installation up to a depth o 40 metres
