Mia’s long snout and pointed ears greeted him at the door. He enjoyed visiting his aunt and uncle, petting the German shepherds, seeing how things were growing in his uncle’s garden, and looking at his aunt’s latest quilt. “What’s happening today?” Daniel asked around Mia’s enthusiastic welcome. “Your uncle is picking tomatoes, and I’m working on a new quilt. Which do you want to see first?” Daniel’s aunt gave him a one-armed hug across his shoulders. “Your quilt. Sometimes the tomato plants have worms and they’re gross.” He made a face. “I’ll sample the tomatoes once he gets them picked, though. Nothing better than a fresh tomato from the garden!” Daniel followed his aunt into her sewing room. He liked all the different designs that could be made. He enjoyed experimenting with the colors, shapes, and patterns. Then the best part was that he didn’t have just a drawing or toy when he was finished. The end result would be a quilt that would keep someone warm in the winter while reading books or playing games. His aunt showed him her current project, then sat at her sewing machine to work on it. Daniel wandered around until he found fabric, in colors he liked, already cut into pieces. He picked up some triangles and began to arrange them, adding shapes as he went along. Daniel knocked on the door and waited for his aunt to answer.

Mia’s long snout and pointed ears greeted him at the door. He

enjoyed visiting his aunt and uncle, petting the German shepherds,

seeing how things were growing in his uncle’s garden, and looking

at his aunt’s latest quilt.

“What’s happening today?” Daniel asked around Mia’s

enthusiastic welcome.

“Your uncle is picking tomatoes, and I’m working on a new

quilt. Which do you want to see first?” Daniel’s aunt gave him

a one-armed hug across his shoulders.

“Your quilt. Sometimes the tomato plants have worms and

they’re gross.” He made a face. “I’ll sample the tomatoes once

he gets them picked, though. Nothing better than a fresh tomato

from the garden!”

Daniel followed his aunt into her sewing room. He liked all the

different designs that could be made. He enjoyed experimenting

with the colors, shapes, and patterns. Then the best part was

that he didn’t have just a drawing or toy when he was finished.

The end result would be a quilt that would keep someone warm

in the winter while reading books or playing games.

His aunt showed him her current project, then sat at her sewing

machine to work on it. Daniel wandered around until he found

fabric, in colors he liked, already cut into pieces. He picked up

some triangles and began to arrange them, adding shapes as

he went along.

Problem Solving

1 What shapes are in the quilt?

Notice parallel or perpendicular

lines, number and types of angles,

etc., to identify the shapes.

2 Name and define specific shapes

in the quilt.

3 Draw and label the

specific shapes to

show how you know

what they are.

4 Each part of the design forms a “quilt block.” Which block(s) have a line of symmetry?

(Color is not a factor.)

5 What designs could Daniel have made with the shapes he found? What other shapes

could he add to the design?

1 Use a ruler, pattern blocks, or

other templates to create and

draw a design for a quilt block.

Color your design.

2 Which shapes did you include

in your design? Why?

3 Does your design have a line of symmetry? How does your decision whether or not

to have symmetry affect the overall design?

4 Compare your drawing to a classmate’s. How are the designs similar? How are

they different?
