Welcome Goddesses to the first issue of Goddess Magazine a bi-monthly online

publication for us curvy, sexy, sassy and confident Goddesses. I am so excited about this launch! It’s been a long time coming and after many months of planning we finally did it. Goddess Magazine is here! Thank you all for all of your support and standing behind my dream. As a small child growing up in New Jersey I would enjoy thumbing through my favorite magazines such as Essence, Ebony and Jet. I would read each magazine from cover to cover making sure I didn’t miss on interesting fact or article. Sometimes I would even taking notes and even sketch small pictures on the whites of the pages. I spend endless amounts of time focusing intently on the cover models inspecting what they were wearing, how they posed, and the creativity behind their make-up and hair designs. My eyes would than drift to the cover stories and before I knew it my fingers would anxiously be turning the pages to the article that seemed to be the most intriguing to my young eyes. These stories educated me, engaged me, took me to foreign lands, and informed me about the news fashion trends or the ever changing celebrity gossip. These magazine motivated me to push myself to my own personal heights and even made me laugh out loud so much so my Grandmother would ask me what it was that tickled me so much. Who would have ever guessed that this little girl would one day be living her dreams of owning her very own magazine and filling its pages with all of the topics that interested her? I am here to tell you all to chase after your dreams no matter how big or unattainable they may seem. Stay focused and when others say you can’t or it can’t be done remind yourself that anything is possible. Dream bigger and bigger everyday as you work towards making your wildest dreams becomes a reality.

XOXOX,

Stress free holidays!!!!

By - Valleen Horsey

OK, troops, the holiday season is here and it‖s all about stress with a capital S. Here are some ways to avoid over spending, crowded shops, ideas for crafty gift. First take a few deep breaths …in through the nose, out through the mouth. In times of high anxiety, this helps you focus and bring in more oxygen. Then think about what you really want to get out of your holiday experience and remember that we are in a recession and it‖s not about how expensive your gifts are, but how you spend this time with people you care about. Volunteering can be a feel good, positive experience. It gives you perspective about others and usually there are some situations that are worse than yours. Helping people in need can be healing, humbling, and rewarding at the same time.

Being organized can also help because you have a list of what you need and you can research the best deals. Getting in touch with your inner crafty-person is awesome because the gifts are custom, more thoughtful, and supplies can go a long way. For example, if you have

someone who likes candles, get the small glass holders, go to a craft store like Michaels, and decorate them with beads, letters, or whatever their favorite types of things are. If they like ice-cream, finding mini cones or stickers and gluing them on

the outside would be a cute way to show that you actually pay attention to what they love to eat. You can go glam and put pearls or glittery beads

on another for the girl who loves her bling etc. You can also take this idea and use mugs, bowls, plates,

and other knick knacks. This can translate into baking dozens of cookies because you can go bananas with decorations, and shapes, and flavors.

Let‖s get back to saving money! If you have ever had a credit card, you could

probably max it out by December 31st.

Page 12: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

One way I reel in the spending is by using prepaid credit cards, because you preload the amount and there are no chances of overdrafts, which leads to overdraft fees. It also helps you budget your money and then there is no need to swipe your debit card. The plus is that most cards cost a one-time start up fee of about $10-20 bucks and only around $ 5 to load each time. Another plus is that there is no credit check so everyone is approved and there are low monthly maintenance fees. You can also usually manage your account online. Your local Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and Rite-aid stores, as well as some banks and Western Union, offer different cards, and you can chose whether or not you want visa or MasterCard. If this doesn‖t work for you, start a Christmas or holiday account at your local bank or credit union. This allows you to save gradually throughout the year and if you are someone who can‖t resist dipping into their savings, pick an account that will

restrict access until a couple months before the holiday season begins.

Now that we have satisfied your money saving taste buds, it‖s time to shop. I know, I know, we all wanted to be awake at 2am, Black Friday so we could stand in line for three more hours, argue over the last electronic gadget, and find parking three miles from the store in cold weather. There are alternatives people. Whatever deals are in the stores are

usually online and it‖s a lot less crowded. There is also cyber Monday, which is like the Monday after and Black Friday and deals last all day until supplies are gone. Remember, do the bulk of your

shopping way ahead of time, and save the simple things for last minute buys, organize what and who you are buying for, use pre-paid cards or holiday accounts, and have fun!!!

By – Cassandra Carter

I received a phone call from my best friend, to whom I speak with on a daily basis. We were conversing as normal when she interrupted the conversation to speak of a horrible sight she just saw. She saw a man, walking in the rain without shoes on his feet and just a mere blanket to shelter him from the cold, wet rain. This same man at one point had a great job, a fast car and an apartment full of the best electronic gadgets money could buy. I could not understand what happened. How could things get so bad for him and millions of other Americans in a country as great as America? At that moment, the conversation changed and each of us began to thank God for the lives we have. We thanked him for our warm houses,

ability to choose what and where we

would like to eat, and of course

our good jobs. There is no doubt

about it, America, the greatest

country in the world; no the greatest country on the planet, now finds herself walking the thin line between poverty and mere survival. How can this be? America, the land of the free, the home of the

brave, is now in a crippling state. Whom now can we blame for such a

travesty done to our great country? Could it be the spending of our government, the spending of its society or a combination of both?

There are so many countless stories that depict the devastating effect that recession has had on our country. Millions of jobs have been lost, which has caused millions to default on the mortgages of their homes. Many place the blame on the government and its excessive spending on a war the American people were told we would not be in. This war costs our country millions of dollars a month, yet many do not know why we are at war in the first place. Politicians are spending millions of dollars on programs that have proved to be ineffective, government officials with excessive salaries produce work that‖s half done, while cutting the already low salaries of the working class, which needs every dollar possible to maintain their households. While the embassies of other countries

In the news today!!!

Page 14: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

are afforded large expense accounts for merely representing their country, the rest of “Main Street” America has to rely on their unemployment benefits to pay for rent and food. It will be a sad day when government finally decides they can no longer extend those benefits. When will this excessive spending by our government end? However, as a citizen of this country and a homeowner myself, I would pose an opinion that the US Government is not the only culprit that is to blame for this recession. The American people themselves share the blame along with our government. We have been spoiled by the ―charge now, pay later‖ message that was delivered to us in the form of a credit card. We do not like delayed gratification, we want what we want and we want it now. We charge more and more on the card, while only making the minimum monthly payments. We allow our college bound children over the age of 18 to sign up for credit cards knowing they do not have gainful employment to make the payments. We allowed shifty salespeople to sweet talk us into purchasing homes we knew we could not afford. We constantly buy items that depreciate in value rather than investing in items that appreciate. If that is not bad enough, we give our children everything they ask for without first teaching them the value of a dollar and second, making those works for it. As the child grows older, they develop an unappreciative attitude toward working people and a

sense of entitlement that the world owes them something. Our children spend more time playing video console games than making them, while the parents are too busy trying to compete with the Joneses and the Smiths.

We all know what issues our country faces economically but what, I ask is the solution? How do we recover from over a decade of excessive spending from our government and ourselves as consumers? We are just going to have to learn how to do more with less. A man once told me that some form of recession happens every 30-40 years, if that is true then why is it so hard for us to learn from

mistakes of the past? Couldn‖t we learn from examples like Joseph in the bible, when he used the years of abundance to store up finances for the lean years or use the Wisdom of Solomon when it comes to how to govern our affairs? Whatever

principles and strategies we use to get out of this dilemma, one thing is certain. We as a nation, citizens and government must realize where we went wrong. We must understand the ―why” so we can plan and implement the “how”. For then and only then, can we as a Nation raise out of the ashes of this travesty.

Go for the Goddess Glow

Glowing Makeup

Making you makeup glow is very sexy.

Have you ever looked at some of the photos

in magazines and said how do they get

their skin or makeup to glow? Here are a

few tips and tricks to get the glowing

appearance.

The beauty of Shimmer

When you think of shimmer think of that

extra kiss to finish your makeup. It gives a

warm and glow to where ever it is placed

on the face and body.

Eyes

To make the eyes pop with a shimmer glow.

Take a small eyes shadow brush and trace

the brow under the brow bone apply and

work in a downward motion as to blend it

along with the other eye shadow you intend

to apply. You will be blending your other

eye shadow as normal. If you look at the

photo above you will see the highlighted

shimmer under her brow. You can also put

shimmer on your lids, in the corner of your

eyes to look more away, and the bottom

lash line for a sexy soft glow. Keep the eye

makeup light and soft let long or false

eyelashes do the talking. If you like you can

always add a darker color in the contour of

your eye to give it a pop of added sexiness

for evening.

Cheeks

By – Michelle Carter

Page 21: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

I love soft glowing cheeks. It gives that soft

facial glow, and dimension to the cheek

area. Apply your cheek color, bronzer, or

both. Then take a blush brush and glide it

across

your

favorite

gold or

silver

shimmer

power

and apply

across the

upper

cheek area to the temples. Start off lightly

because you do not want to apply too much.

You can always add it is harder to take

away.

Glowing Face

To get the glow all over you in addition to

your cheeks, and brow bone. You can dust

the shimmer power on the side corners of

your forehead, down the bridge of your

nose and chin. It is almost like applying

your bronzer in the same areas. You will

not apply under the brow bone or as eye

shadow.

Lips

To give your lips a soft, shimmery, sultry

glow simply apply shimmer power to the

lips with fingertip and add your favorite

clear, colored or shimmer gloss.

A word from the Artist and Editor

Creating a beautiful glowing face always

starts with good skin. You must hydrate all

year around. Dry skin and shimmer do not

look good together it can give an aging

appearance. If you hydrate that dry skin

and then shimmer it will it look moist and

youthful in appearance. For those that do

not wear foundation you can use a tinted

moisturizer, with or without a bronzer and

apply in the same manner as described. You

can add liquid shimmer to foundation,

moisturizer or lotion to give the body a

glow.

I want to hear from you. Please feel free to

send any questions and comments to

[email protected] I will answer

questions in upcoming articles.

By Lee Ann Buttery

When it comes to wearing makeup, most women play it safe by sticking with neutral colors simply because they‖re afraid to experiment. Whether you‖re that woman or not, continue reading to get the low-down on what makeup colors are hot for 2011.

Eyes

While certain eye shadow shades are timeless such as earth tones and neutrals (black, brown, gray, etc), other color trends come and go. This year, it‖s all about embracing color and abandoning metallics. Make a statement with your eyes for 2011 by wearing bright shadow shades like sapphire, amethyst and bold green and intense liners in teal or plum. Perhaps this trend is too runway for your every day look, but you can pull it off for an evening function or an even a daytime weekend look- if you dare, that is. But bear in mind that proper application of these striking hues is important so that you don‖t end up looking like a clown. For instance, keep the bright colors on the lid- avoid going past the crease.

Lips

If you are going to make a bold statement with your eyes, then keep your lips subtle with a nude shade of lip-gloss or lipstick. For days when you decide to make your lips the focus, then keep your eyes subdued and swipe a shade of bubblegum or baby pink (this was a makeup trend for 2010, but its going strong for ‖11 too!). This color is hot for all year

round and looks good on practically everyone. MAC carries various bubblegum/baby pink shades suited for different skin tones such as Pink Plaid, Snob and Pink Nouveau. And as always, a red pout is Old Hollywood and never goes out of style.

Cheeks

In terms of cheeks, there is never a trend per se. The rules on blush colors and application will probably always remain consistent. Just make sure that you are wearing a blush shade that is best suited for your complexion. For porcelain to ivory complexions, choose a

blush color in light pink or light peach. For medium to olive skin tones, opt for shades in peach, pink, or tawny. For tan to light black skin tones, go for blush colors in deep orangey/peach or warm pinks and for dark skin complexions, try deep rose or bronze.

This year, makeup color trends tactfully tell the world, “Look at me!” with flamboyant eyes and flirty lips. So if you‖re naturally a shy goddess, then step out of your cosmetic comfort zone and get gutsy with a shocking eye shadow color or let your lips go pretty in pink.

It has come up in many readings in recent times that people are confused about spirit guides (also sometimes referred to as your angels) what they are for, how they interact with us and how we can communicate better with them.

Spirit guides come in many shapes and forms, they can be people who have crossed over from this world into the next, higher beings such as the beings of light, or even animals. The most common of these being other souls who have crossed over and chosen to accompany you in this lifetime to help with your soul lessons and path in life.

The amount of guides you have is often an indication of your path in life. The more you are here to communicate, aid others or teach the more guides you will have. Now for the tricky part along with our main guides we can often have extra help, who I call interlopers, they come to assist us in times of great change and transformation, hardship, joy or just because their knowledge is needed to aid in a specific lesson you are learning.

For a lot of people they look outside of themselves for large neon style signs to say hey we are here! It is rare your guides will go to such extremes to get your attention. In fact your guides will do things in pretty subtle ways. The next time you feel a tingle in a part of your body note it and if it happens at different times in future

in the same area you can be sure it is one of your guides telling you I am here. Pay attention to the lyrics of songs you get stuck in your head, take note of the feeling when you put your keys in one spot only to find them in another one, words, numbers or symbols that come up around you repeatedly or hearing someone calling your name only to turn and find no one there, or even hearing the radio announcers voice change

for a brief moment are some common ways our guides communicate with us.

It is so easy to miss the signposts of our guides subtle and loving communication with the thought it should be big and amazing and it can be at times but this isn‖t the norm it is the exception often when we are in times of great danger or in need of some loving care. A valentine‖s day in my early twenties springs to mind here. I woke

Introducing

Page 31: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

with sun streaming through my window to see a small pink heart floating through the air and stop then a red heart and then another pink heart and another red heart and so on till there were about a dozen hearts in a row above my window. I remember feeling very at peace and loved at the time.

You may ask what makes me qualified to talk to you about this. I don‖t claim to be an expert but can teach you from my experiences. Let me introduce myself my name is Amanda Christina and I have been doing psychic readings for 17 years since I was 19 years old. My gifts come as what is called a “clear channel” in that I get messages directly from my guides and pass them onto the person I am reading for. When I first started doing readings I would hear the voices of the guides communicating with me. Now I liken it to pulling a thought out of the air as it has become as natural as breathing to me these days. I still on occasion pick up on both my and other people‖s guides and still sometimes hear a distinct voice, get a mental picture or see a flicker of them in every day moments.

So now you have some of the basic ideas of who our guides are, what they are here for and how they communicate with us I hear you asking but how can I communicate with them?

There are several ways I can think of the first way being any of the many angel, fairy or other oracle cards that you can get at most New Age or Book stores these days.

Grab yourself a notebook and pen to ―play‖ with the cards so you can note what themes and cards come up most often. The

best way to do this is to sit down in a quiet place, focus on what you most need to know,

take some deep breaths as you shuffle the cards and pick either a single card or choose one of the card layouts the booklet gives you and then see where the cards take you and what information you are given. This is a great way not only to find guidance from your guides but also to get more in tune with your own intuition.

There are many guided meditations on the market that are designed to help you connect with your guides however any meditation will clear your mind and help you be in a more in tune space to communicate with them a great idea is to meditate for at least twenty minutes and then try some Automatic writing which brings us to the next way to communicate with your guides.

Page 32: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

Automatic writing is when you sit down in a very meditative space (think of it as that feeling when you‖re between awake and asleep is the best way I can think of describing it) and write whatever flows from you. Some days it will be easy and others it may not flow as freely. The best thing you can do to allow this process to happen is to not think about it. Switch off your mind and just allow the writing to flow from you. The minute you start to think or analyse what you are writing is the moment you step out of the flow and you will start to think about what you are writing and lose your momentum. It is best to wait to read what you have written till the energy has passed. You will feel the shift in energy when it is time to stop writing. It may take a few times to get into the swing of this process it is however very worthwhile and can yield some interesting results.

Talk to your guides. I know it sounds crazy and for some people a little weird or uncomfortable but it is a great way to get to know your guides. You can do this out loud or in your own mind. At first you may doubt that the answers you are getting are from your guides as you may hear them in your own voice rather than theirs. It may take a little

time to feel comfortable with this however like anything the more you put it into practice the easier it becomes. Start simple ask for a yes or no answer to a question take a deep breath let it out hold the question in mind and the first answer that pops into your head without thinking about it is the answer you need.

As with anything the more you use these techniques the easier it will be to find the ones that work best for you with your guides. We are all different. Our spiritual journeys have all been different. How we communicate and interact with others is a good indication of how easy or hard it may be for some of us to communicate with our guides.

These are all great starting points for

your journey to getting to know your guides. I wish you much love and positive energy along the way. Life is an amazing adventure and getting to know your guides is one of the most awe inspiring adventures of all. Till next we meet along life‖s journey may you and your guides get to know each other better.

“Talk to your guides... Start simple ask for a yes or no answer to a question take a deep breath let it out hold the question in mind and the first answer that pops into your head without thinking about it is the answer you need.”

“I don't wanna be like Cinderella

Sittin' in a dark cold dusty cellar

Waiting for somebody, to come and set me

free

I don't wanna be like someone waiting

For a handsome prince to come and save me

Oh I will survive, unless somebody's by my

side

Don't wanna be no no no one else

I'd rather rescue myself”

The Cheetah Girls

By - Amanda Christina

I have been contemplating the whole rescuing thing, we grow up with stories like Cinderella, and sleeping beauty and other such fairy tales and as children we believe we will be rescued from our life, but here is the twist in the tale so to speak, ever notice that before the prince rescues the princess he goes through much hardship to get to the reward? He has trials by dragon, evil queens and the like what if this is the part of the story we should actually be listening to? What if the prince rescuing the princess is actually a way of showing us we need to rescue ourselves? After the entire inner journey is fraught with danger and peril in so many ways!

And here is the kicker in many a version of Cinderella it is actually Cindy herself who sets herself free just look at the Disney version with Brandy and Whitney Huston. If you wait to be rescued well, you could spend the rest of your life waiting. If you rescue yourself you can start now and along the way your prince/princess will show up because that is how it should be.

We cage ourselves, put ourselves into boxes, of how we think others see us and often times trap ourselves with images of how we see ourselves or how we think we should be. Time to remove the bars, one at a time and set ourselves free, after all how can we expect to attract the kind of relationships be they friendships or otherwise that we want/need unless we are willing to step up and set ourselves free?

Time to actually move forward, to let go of the baggage, to take a good look and examine all of the beliefs that limit us, the reasons we feel stalled or trapped, the people around us are often mirrors who show us things even if they are things we don‖t like about ourselves, and it is time to listen to why they are there, to why we have them there and to ask ourselves the tough questions.

The truth of the matter is the only person who can rescue you is yourself! Because the demons we fight are in essence our own. The first step is to acknowledge this and it is often the hardest because we get good at lying to ourselves. To allowing the negative self talk to win. It takes time and energy to learn to replace the negative self talk (and some of the habits of a lifetime) with more positive messages. It is well worth it though because journeying within leads to a happier, complete within you person and I highly recommend it.

Life is an amazing adventure, and the adventure truly begins when we learn to rescue ourselves .Until next we meet on life‖s journey, remember how amazing, talented and special you are!!!

Close your eyes and think about the

last time you were kissed. Not a quick peck on the cheek or the obligatory kiss as he leaves the house for the day. I mean that lingering; make your soul sigh and knees turn to butter kind of kiss. How do you feel? Does a grin play across your face and your heart flutter in remembrance? That's what happened to me. Yes, I did the very thing I asked of you. And…WOOOOW!!

I'm a sucker for a great kiss. To me, kissing is one of the most intimate things two people can do. And when you find that person whose kiss can melt you….Okay,

By Brandi Rainey

Brandi!! Come back!! But, anyway, did you know that there are several healthy side effects of kissing? Yes, all of this wintertime kanoodling is doing something wonderful inside of you...besides making you blush when you think about it later.

Did you know…?

Kissing your partner goodbye can help you live approximately 5 years longer than if you do. So when your honey leaves for the day, or night, don't skimp on the lip locking. Kissing is good for maintaining heart health. Think about it. When you‖re kissing,

your heart race …doesn‖t it? For that particular period of time, blood is circulating

Kissing for Good Health!!!!

Page 35: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

freely and quickly throughout your body. And that has a lowering effect on your blood pressure. Hmmmm…is kissing a possible cure for hypertension? It‖s certainly a more fun option than meds. Kissing can also be a form of meditation. Yes, seriously. And we‖ve all been exposed to all of the benefits of meditation—stress relief, lowering blood pressure, improving the immune system, well being and self esteem. But what is meditation? The idea that your mind is still and your thoughts are silent? Being fully present in the moment? Now, tell me…the last time you were entangled in a great kiss, what were you thinking? Can‖t remember? Maybe because you were not thinking! While you‖re kissing,

your mind isn‖t racing for a change!! What a great alternative to lotus positions and chanting mantras (in my most humble opinion).

Kissing releases oxytocin, the hormone that facilitates the bonding process and induces contractions. Expectant mothers,

listen up!! Tired of being pregnant? Your obstetrician advising medical induction because your due date has come and gone? Go home and make out with your partner.

Seriously!!! The oxytocin you‖ll produce in this manner is, to most mothers I‖ve tended, preferable to the synthetic drug pitocin that you‖ll get in the hospital. So, would you prefer IV meds and back to back contractions with no break? Or naturally-produced contractions with natural rhythm and making out with your honey to boot? Now, that‖s a no-brainer to me.

Kissing also burns calories. I bet THAT got your attention! Yes…deep, passionate kissing has been known to raise, and practically double, your basic metabolic rate. And that leads to more calories burned. Nice, right?

Now, armed with this info, I‖m headed to find my honey and do something nice for myself…And him. Hint, hint…nudge, nudge…

Have you ever made New Year‖s resolutions and realized later in the year that you didn‖t stick with them? Or have you

ever said “this year is going to be my year” and then didn‖t do anything to make it a great year? I‖m sure that we‖ve all made one excuse or another as to why the year didn‖t work out the way we planned. Don‖t you think, though, that the time of making excuses is over? Are you really ready for another crappy year or do you want to make it the best beginning of many wonderful years? I tell you what, I know I‖m ready for a fantastic year and many more even better years to come. I‖m through lying to myself saying that I can‖t fulfill my dreams and saying that I don‖t have any control over what happens in my life. I‖m ready to do something about it!

How you ask? How do I make this the best year to kick off a great bunch of even more wonderful years? It‖s simple really, no honestly it is. I know it‖s going to sound strange and maybe even a slight on the side of ridiculous, but if you‖ll give me a chance you might be surprised. I‖ve found that in a lot of failed ventures the main factor for the failure was fear. Whether it is fear of the competition, fear of success, fear of failure,

fear of happiness even; the point that remains constant is fear. Fear is an emotion that tends to overwhelm and paralyze to the point that we can no longer move forward. How do we get past the fear factor you ask? It‖s simple, face it head on! Show whatever it is that you are afraid of, that it or they can‖t hurt you anymore. Show that you are going to

make sure that nothing and no one is going to hold you back from getting what you want and deserve. Show that you have the strength to do what it takes to make your dreams become reality. Show that you won‖t be pushed around and that you will fight no matter what it takes. Now in reality I‖m sure many of you are saying “that‖s easier said

than done” and you‖d be absolutely right. It is easier said than done, yet most everything is. But those that sit around talking instead of doing never go anywhere. Take charge of your life, instead of sitting around talking about doing great things; get out there and do them! It all starts within you, more specifically in your own brain. You have to let go of every negative thing that you‖ve let in over the years. You have to let go of all the pain you‖ve held on to over the years. You have to move past all of the negative thoughts you‖ve allowed your brain to consume and see them as your fuel to keep going. Every bit of doubt anyone has ever put in you and that includes yourself can be the fuel that you use to keep yourself going. You have to forgive, honestly and truthfully, with all of your heart. No matter how painful it is forgiveness

Start off 2011 the right way!!!

By- Lacey Woodbury

Page 39: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

is an important key; because if you can‖t forgive you can‖t move forward.

You have the ability to make an incredible life for yourself if you give yourself half the chance. Don‖t let the past hold you back from an incredible future or keep you blinded to the present that is the present. Every day when you wake up, start with some positive messages that pertain to you and your dreams. Keep repeating it until you believe it, because even if you don‖t at first, if you keep going with it you will eventually start. It‖s all about retraining your mind with a more positive message and beating out all the negative training that has been sitting there for years. Leave yourself notes everywhere, on your mirror, on your desk, in your car; wherever you will see it multiple times a day. If you start getting down or stressed step away from what is making you feel stressed and do something else, something that makes you feel happy. If you can‖t step away from it however, change the way you think about it. For instance if you are at work and deadlines keep piling up and you start to feel overwhelmed then look at each task individually and take it one step at a time. Move forward one step at a time seeing each challenge individually so that it is not so overwhelming.

Take breaks from the everyday as often as you can and do something that you enjoy, just for you. This will help you stay positive and keep

you motivated. Give yourself a break, you aren‖t superhuman you can only do what you can do.

Don‖t worry about what you can‖t do or what is out of

your control. This is hard, I know, I struggle with it every day but practice makes perfect. Realize that when something happens that is not the way you expected it happened that way for a reason. You may never know what the reason is, but there is probably a lesson in it. When things don‖t go right or at least the way you expect, see it as a either a lesson to be learned or a blessing in disguise.

You can‖t ever go back so start today and move forward. Live each day as a blessing. Have love in your heart and a smile on your face. Laugh as often as you can. And give with all you have. If you can begin to see all the wonderful things in your life and make each day count and let go of the little

things then this year and every year to come will be better than all the previous. Stay strong and have a positive attitude and all the good things that you want and need in your life will come to you.

Healthy Skin

Your makeup is at its best when your skin is at its

best. The best tool for healthy skin is water. I know

that there are plenty of skin treatments out there but

in addition to those we need water and rest all year

around. Your skin is the largest breathing organ of

the body so it is working all of the time and mostly at

night.

Skin Types

There are three basic types:

1. Normal – where your skin is perfectly balanced. Not

to dry or

oily

2. Combination – where you can be dry in some spots

oily in others

3. Oily – you have build up of sebum all over your face.

If you are combination you will be able to notice

where you are oily and where you are dry. If you are

oily you will have all over your face not just in your T-

Zone (forehead, nose, Chin). Once your skin type is

determined then you can pick a skincare regiment that

is right for your type.

Skin Regiments

Cleansing: Is so

important that

you should do it

on a daily basis

once in the

morning and

again at night. When you clean your skin it

is refreshed and is rid of the free radicals

that have been attacking it all day. Those

free radicals can age and damage the skin.

So you must nurture it consistently.

3 Steps to Great Skin:

1. Cleansing – cleans the skin.

2. Toning- removes any trace of cleanser and

prepares the skin for the moisturizer.

Winter Dew – Lips/Skin/Body hydrators that works!!! By – Michelle Carter

Page 41: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

3. Moisturizer - Replenishes and hydrates the

skin. You should have a day moisturizer

with an SPF of at least 35 or higher. Your

night cream of course does not need an SPF,

and should be emollient since your skin is

working its hardest. By doing these few

simple steps you skin will reward you. You

will see the texture become softer and your

complexion brighter.

Body Care

During the winter months you must make

sure you continue to moisturize your skin.

You may have to switch to a more emollient

lotion or body cream. In the winter skin has

a tendency to get drier due to the cold

temperatures. When you shower use a

hydrating body wash, and then take a

moment to moisturize once you get out. Do

not forget the back of your hands and your

feet. They are the most neglected.SPF in your

hand cream is essential for anti-aging.

A word from the Artist - When it comes to

applying makeup it always looks best on

healthy and hydrated skin. Never go to sleep

in your makeup your skin will suffer the

morning after and more than likely be

dehydrated. Always wash your face or at

least take off makeup remover. I like the

wipes the best they are quick and easy.

I want to hear from you. Please send

questions and comments to

in future articles.

Listening to your heart, at risk

heart disease!!!!

By Marie Cothia

For the goddess curvy

readers, I want them to know that your heart is connected to everything in your body and that your heart at the center. Nurturing and Protecting your heart is vital to your physical well being, even if you may have genetics or have family history of heart disease, It's not, I repeat not a death sentence, but about making new positive changes towards your lifestyle and diet.

In this health article, I may discuss several ways on how to improve your health overall and preventing at risk heart disease. First of all, I want to address that as women, our signs and symptoms differs from men. Men typically often have the chest pain that feels like a squeezing or deep pressure. Their pain is more severe than usual. Women on the other hand may and most likely have symptoms of heartburn, nausea, fatigue, jaw pain. In my years as a healthcare professional, I have seen women who will not make any changes towards their lifestyle and how

they are in denial about their health risks, but as we get older, it is a must for us to start now to avoid the unnecessary risks of heart disease later in life. Taking ownership for your life and the choices you make will

be beneficial for you in the long term. Here are the seven steps towards reducing your risk of heart disease. 1) As far your diet, switching to low fat food items just won't do. You will need to eat a diet rich "in all the good fats" the unsaturated oils that come from the plants. You should avoid Trans fats at all costs

Page 43: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

(well try at least) example: hydrogenated oils in processed foods. 2) Eat well: You are what you eat. What you

eat affect your insulin levels in the body. A diet high in fruits and vegetables(5 to 9 servings per day), that also consists of eating fish at least twice a week, limiting alcohol intake to no more than one drink per day, limiting sodium intake will all help to decrease cholesterol levels and also to prevent at risk heart disease for women. 3) Be spiritually active (Surprised?) Attending worship services on a regular

basis can do great wonders to reduce your stress, of course stress is a normal part of life, but it's how you cope with stress that can affect your heart. 4) Reach for the optimal blood pressure of less than 120/80 5) Total (overall) cholesterol levels must be less than 200mg/dl 6) Physical Activity (Very Important) should be at least 30 minutes. Three times a week is minimum Five times a week is best to get the maximum results. 7) Visiting your doctor at least once a year for an annual physical (check up) and last but not least quitting smoking. The potential risks and the idea of getting heart disease can be frightening, but I hope to inspire all of you women to conquer that fear and control of your heart and health. From my heart to yours, I wish all of you good health and joy

Lutu Warrior

"When the age of ice came to an end tales of a great warrior called Lutu came south. This is the story of Lutu, or

rather her twin sister Lutu, the lesser known one who was good at cooking.."

Lutu is a Sword and Sorcery comedy adventure where the heroine in not a muscle bound Barbarian but a Plus

Size Cook. She is thrown into the Warrior world when her twin sister, the famous Warrior, goes missing at the

Battle of Brantiok. With the help of Sword Master Han, and the gastronomic Dragon Mo, she takes on her

sister's identity in hopes of finding her....

“Lutu Warrior of the North started as a conversation with my wife. We were looking at all the Sword and Sorcery

comics, with semi-clothed women in them and thought why couldn’t there be a Plus Sized comic book hero? She

would go out into this world, of Swords and Sorcery, and it wouldn't matter what she looked like.

I feel that the story of Lutu story has the underlying message of no matter who you are you can be whatever you

want. Obviously, on top of that, there are some comedy Dragons, Goblins and sword fights to merry things along

as Lutu learns the skills of a Warrior.”

What is contouring your makeup? It is the act of putting back what you have taken away when you even out your skin tone with foundation. The contouring road map: Now ladies I know this looks strange but every celebrity that has had their photo take has had their face look like this at one time or another. When you contour your face you are adding back the dimensions of your face. Believe me when I tell you when it all gets blended together it will look smooth and add definition to your face. You can see by looking at this photo where those dimensions will appear. You do not have to fill in the eyebrows and the eye area. This photo is of a fully contoured face. You can pick the area of your face that you would like to emphasis and draw the line accordingly. The best way to do it is when you are applying your foundation you can draw your lines on first then blend. The photo is just directions on where to place what line to achieve certain effects. Do not be afraid just practice. Nose Along the sides of the nose you trace the longer ridges with a darker powder blend in

downward motion, eye shadow, or foundation. Then lighter color in the center of forehead, and down the center of the nose as illustrated blending in downward motion. You can blend with your foundation you may have to touch up

the darker areas after blending. Cheeks In the hollows of your cheeks you will place the darker shade blending down and out. You can blend by alone or along with foundation (suggested method). Chin and Neck areas The area under the chin where it meets your neck is there the dark color is placed. It slims down the jowls and neck area by addition definition. Please make sure to blend you do not want demarcation from your foundation to your contoured neck and chin area.

Temples and Hairline: In this area it helps to frame the face and give definition. You would use the darker shades around the hairline and temples with the lightest shade always in the middle. A word from the Artist/Editor Have fun when contouring your makeup. Too much is too much because it can appear un-natural. Always remember to blend as with any makeup application. I want to hear from you. Please email any questions to [email protected]. I will answer all questions in the future articles.

Do-it yourself COLOR

By –Eugenia Saphire

Try coloring at home: You‖ll save big

bucks and it‖s much easier than you think; you

can get results that are to dye for!

We have all heard the at home dye job

horror stories. Even I have experienced this jaw

dropping and eye popping “UH-OHS!” But it

can be done and done to perfection all while

saving yourself some $$$.

What is the look you‖re going for?

Before you begin, you have to make some

coloring choices. Are you looking to go

permanent, demi, semi with just highlights?

Permanent color means just that; it won‖t wash

out and you‖d have to wait for your hair to

grow back out. If you‖re new to the coloring

game consider experimenting with the demi. A

demi is a longing lasting dye that you have the

ability to wash out between 15 to 20 washes.

But the semi loses it color with fewer washes

than a demi coloring. Ladies, we also have the

option to add highlight to our hair and

highlight kits are excellent options to take into

account. You can keep 75 to 80 percent of your

national hair color when you add highlight

“bling”. If you are planning on doing your own

coloring you‖ll need a few essentials like a

regular size comb, gloves, shower cap, an

application bottle all of which normally comes

in the hair coloring kit but make sure you also

have an ample lighting, a mirror, a heavy

Page 52: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

ointment such as petroleum jelly which will

applied to the airline to prevent staining. Be

sure to wear an old t-shirt and have an old

towel on hand since the dye will color material

and surfaces, besides you don‖t want to mess up

you good linens. Remember your goal is to

saturate your hair with the coloring product;

this can be done in small sections at a time to

ensure complete coverage of the dye to every

inch of the hair on your head.

This process cannot be rushed; and if

you have recently had a chemical treatment

such as a relaxer or perm you really should

wait until the second week that you‖ve had you

chemical treatment, trust and believe that I

have made this mistake and it was a “hot mess”.

It had to be cut off due to the large amount of

damage I had done to my beauty hair. So please

Goddesses be careful and read all of the

warnings and instructions properly to you hair.

I know that

once I learned of

the warnings

and how to

apply, I loved

the freedom

of coloring my

own hair thin and hour

and the money I saved

didn‖t hurt either. If you want to get creative,

you can have a “dye-it” party with your gurls

and do some catching up and gossiping.

I want all you Goddesses out there to

remember a few things about coloring your

hair; it‖s a lesson within itself. However, dye-

kits for highlights normally came complete

with a placement chart which will make

highlighting even easier. Also highlight

solutions are very pasty which means no

dripping and less mess. Once the process of

coloring your hair is completed all you have to

do is waiting while the color does all the work.

The rest is a snap; rinse, shampoo, condition

and then style your new Goddess locks how you

choose.

It's two in the afternoon. You've had

lunch

alread

y, and

dinner

is at

least

three

hours

away. You've got that “blah”, sluggish kind

of feeling so you reach into your desk

drawer and pull out...what? A candy bar? A

pastry leftover from this morning's

meeting? Do you rush to the break room

for a soda that will give you the ultimate

sugar rush? Or do you holler out a request

to that coworker who just happens to make

a quick run to Starbucks? If you're at home,

do you grab the sweetest, stickiest thing you

can find in the kitchen? If you really want

to get rid of that midday “blah” feeling, you

should do none of the above.

What you need to do is move

around and be active. If you're stuck in an

office cubicle all day, use that fifteen

minute afternoon break to get a little

sunshine. Take a walk outside. It does

wonders for that slump. If you're an at-

home mom, slide the

baby in a stroller and

take a walk. That will

not only rejuvenate

you, but tucker them

out a little and bedtime

will be no trouble at all.

If you have older kids,

drag them with you and spark up a

conversation as you are enjoying some

fresh air.

If you can't get out, stretch a little.

Sit straight up and plant both feet firmly on

the floor. As you deeply inhale, bring both

arms over your head and interlace your

fingers, and turn the palms out. Stay in this

positio

n for a

breath

count.

This routine will help you feel relaxed and

would revive you out of that slump. It also

eases wrist tensions which is associated

with constant typing and data entry.

Feeling a little snackish? Try

grabbing a glass of water first. A lot of

people mistake thirst for hunger. If that

doesn't help, try a protein/carbs combo such

as peanut butter and whole grain crackers,

hummus on a pita, or my personal favorite,

a banana dog. Don't laugh! But I take a

whole grain hot dog bun, spread it with

peanut butter, and pop in a whole banana.

Delish!! And knocks that slump on its

tushie quickly!!

If you're one of those gals that must

have something warm in her cup at this

time of day, go for an herbal or green tea

versus black tea or coffee. Yeah, the caffeine

will give you a rush, but you'll crash. Better

yet, you won't be able to sleep when you

want to. Try a refreshing peppermint tea, or

something citrusy to awaken your senses.

Well ladies, those are my best tips. I hope

they help you as much as they help me.

Dressing like A Goddess for the Holidays

By Janet Wood Cunlif

The wonderful experience of life is that everyday is a holiday for a Goddess. However, since we live in a land of mere mortals, it is interesting to observe their festivals of celebration.

Valentines Day, the celebration of Love, is perhaps the one holiday that is divinely appointed for us. How we dress, is decided on by what mortal event we will be attending. But the most important aspect of being a Goddess is that we do it with flair.

There is so much that can be done with a sequined long scarf, it can add jazz to a pair of pants and a sweater, illuminate the little black dress, or added to a suit, the standard work outfit mingles easily at a cocktail party.

Wear it draping down at the bodice, crossed at the shoulder where it is secured with a divine broach, guaranteed to catch everyone‖s eye.

Or if the scarf is wide enough, it can be substituted for a blouse. Wrap it around your neck, bringing the long ends to a -vee- at the waist of your skirt, or pants and tuck it in. Worn with a jacket, it casts a spell of naughty and nice.

As Goddesses we know what mere mortals do not, our power derives from

within. “Less is more” can never be overstated. We know that when we are choosing our clothing for

an event, we accent our best feature by choosing what will show it off, be it a sweater, dress, or accessory. The secondary pieces (jewelry, coats, boots or shoes) flatter and bring attention to the main show, not distract. There is nothing sadder than watching a “wanna-be-Goddess” put on long earrings, many necklaces, low cut top, big belt, bracelets galore, and rings on all fingers, coupled with stiletto boots or heels as she strives for attention. Study, Jennifer Hudson, Angelia Jolie, Queen Latifah, Oprah, Jennifer Lopez, and one of the grandest Goddesses of all Sophia Loren; their manner of walking, talking and making an entrance says it all. Their wear their clothes, their clothes do not wear them.

The best thing about being a Goddess is that no matter whether you are a “Goddess in training”, “Prime of Life Goddess” or a “Senior Goddess” once you have the power it‖s always yours.

How to Pick the Perfect Little Black Dress

Coco Chanel 1920’s first little black dress

Tips to consider when looking for a little black dress:

∞ The first quality you should look for in the perfect little black dress is fabric. Your little piece of perfection must consist of a lightweight fabric. It reinsures your

dress is flatting to your curves all year round at any event or occasion.

∞ Second, the length must be appropriate for any event or occasion. The perfect length would resides in between two points on your legs, which are an inch above your knee, point one, and point two is mid-calf. Point one keeps you from

looking like a tramp and point two keeps your dress in the little black dress category. But both points can be worn at any business events and at any special occasions; and with the right accessories of course.

∞ The third quality your little black dress should have is comfort. Your dress is supposed to make a women feel and look sexy and comfort is part of it. If you don’t look or feel comfortable and sexy than that dress isn’t for you.

Tips on Makeup for this Season!!!

Mission: To create a beautiful look fast and simple.

Eyes: 1.) Earth Tone Shades and Neutral Colors such as Champagne or a taupe for a natural look are very trendy this year.

Start by applying the shadow on the lower lid. Covering the lid from the inner eye to the outer corner of the eye. Then apply the second shadow

above the crease of your eye across this entire section of the eye. Blend the two colors so that no line of colors is visible. It should look like the colors fade into one another. Apply some eye liner use a pencil or liquid. Apply to the lower lid and follow your eyelash line for a guide. Apply Mascara 2 coats for a long lash effect. Eye Brows: 1) Clean up the eye brow from any shadow and brush on a Brown or black shadow to fill in the brow and make uniform and natural. This will allow you to create a longer or thicker eyebrow depending on your choice.

Cheeks: 1). The Cheeks apply blush in a "C" pattern on the apple of the cheek and extending to the top of cheek bone. Choose a color that will create a natural pinkish glow. Lips: 1) To finish off The Lips should be lined with lip pencil. (Choose a color that matches your lipstick color.) The color that seems to be popping out every where is Flesh Tones Pinks and Nudes. For better coverage Line and fill in the lips and then apply lipstick color this will prevent colorless lips and create Luscious Defined lips. Then apply a gloss for that sexy effect!! ******You can all ways use a splash of bright or bold color!!!! When stepping out in the evening, or to a special event. This years Hair Styles vary from either the straight or sleek with a side bang where you can put a part in the middle of the head or a side part is always cute. You can pump up the volume and create long tressels of curls with a side bang also. The Natural look is always current and simple to maintain.

For those

Glamorous parties put the hair in a pony tail and place the pony tail low on the head. Once this is done take a piece of hair and wrap around the hair band and pin so that the band is not exposed. Clean up the fly away hairs by spraying a little hair spray and brushing back. Then brush the tail you can then begin to curl sections of hair and leave loose, or make a braid and wrap hair around and pin to secure in place.

Remember Ladies a clean polished look always works well. For those Ladies with short sassy hair use a gloss for shine, or maybe a styling spritz Mega Hold to hold that hair in place for those flip styles and for holding curls in place and use a flat iron to create a spiky and textured look. Section the hair in the direction you want the hair to go. Then flat iron in the direction desired and then spritz in place. Use a rat tail comb that is heat resistant to straighten hair and for sectioning as well. Play with the hair before sprit zing

******Remember to always use styling tools that are for heat treated hair so that you

protect the hair from excessive exposure to Thermal Styling. Moisturize the hair and once a week use a clarifier to remove build up of styling products on the hair. Your Hair is a non verbal expression of how you feel on the inside!!!

The Natural look is always current and simple to maintain.

Top Ten Valentines Day Tips to Keep your Hunny Happy

By – Brazilia Moda

Saint Valentine's Day

(commonly shortened to Valentine's Day) is an annual commemoration held on

February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions. The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs named Valentine and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 500 AD. It was deleted from the Roman calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI, but its religious observance is still permitted. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. Information provided by Wikipedia Ok now that we have some of the history go ahead and make your own Valentine history by letting the person you are with know that not only on a calendar date you will tell them I love you but that always that your heart beats it is saying I love you WOW good one wink wink. Unique Valentine Gift Ideas 1. M&M candies that you can order with what you would like to have them say go on a special date you can add a picture artwork message its fun: Here is their link http://www.mymms.com

Give eleven red roses and one white rose. Attach a note that reads: "In every bunch there's one who stands out and you are that one." 3. Home-made coupons for backrubs foot rubs doing the dishes or any house work of their choosing. And there are those other special coupons enough said wink, wink.... 4. you can fill some up with helium and put some balloons with white and others with red and these can go to the ceiling and it will be such a wonderful look. 5. Do you want to manage

your weight, control stress,

and increase the production

of "good cholesterol” levels

without medications,

strenuous exercising, and a

gym membership? Walking

can address all of the

above, along

with lowering

cholesterol,

blood

pressure, and

reducing your

risk of Type II

Diabetes.

Listed below

are the

answers to

the Who,

What, Where,

When, and

How questions of walking.

WHO can benefit from

starting a walking regimen?

EVERYONE! So grab a

friend, spouse, or your pet,

and get going! Advantages

of walking solo? You can set

your own pace, location,

and listen to the play list I

put together for your MP3

player. WHAT will you need

to get started? A

comfortable pair of walking

shoes!!! To amp up your

routine, you can purchase a

pair of those specialty

sneakers that are designed to increase muscle

activity. Dress in loose layers on top, but on the

bottom opt for form fitting bottoms made out

of spandex to reduce friction from rubbing

thighs. A pedometer to track progress. WHERE

should I walk? Around your block, the mall, a

nearby park, or a high school’s racing track. The

point is to pick somewhere readily accessible to

you, then vary it up by changing

locations. If alone, avoid hiking

trails and parks that aren’t

heavily populated. If walking at

night, invest in reflective tape,

so that motorist can see you.

WHEN should I start walking?

You can walk in the morning

before work or school to get

you rejuvenated for your day,

but if time doesn’t permit, you

can walk after work, once

you’ve had your dinner. Don’t

have time for either? Use your

30-60 minute break at work to walk around the

neighborhood. Be flexible and you fit walking

into EVERY situation. HOW do I stay motivated?

Set your goals small. For beginners, aim for 15

to 25 minutes, five days a week. As you begin to

build up endurance, increase your time every

other day. If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself

up, just start over the next day. The point is,

don’t STOP! When listening to the play list I’ve

compiled for you, take note. The Warm-up is to

reflect on the PAST, how you are now taking

steps to a healthier future. The Workout is to

The cold climate is unfortunately conducive to dry, ashy skin and chapped, cracked lips. No goddess wants to deal with that. So how can we goddesses avoid these winter blunders? Continue reading on how to achieve soft skin in spite of the freezing season.

Use the Right Cleanser

Cleansing is the first step to achieving softer, smoother skin. Avoid soaps and cleansers that are drying to the skin such as Ivory soap and gel-based body washes. Instead, use cleansers that have moisturizing properties such as Dove soap and Aveeno Daily

Moisturizing Body Wash.

Exfoliate

Remember to slough off dead surface cells by exfoliating your body

after you‖ve cleansed in the shower. Bear in mind that it is not necessary to exfoliate every day- two or three times a week should suffice. There are a plethora of great body scrubs on the market. For instance, Bath and Body Works offers a large array of body scrubs- especially their aromatherapy collection that not only exfoliates the skin, but also is therapeutic to the soul. They come in a variety of scents such as Stress Relief- Tranquil Mint, Energy-Orange Ginger and Sleep- Lavender Chamomile. A true goddess harmonizes her mind, body and spirit. What better way to do that than

a multi-purpose beauty product such as BABW Aromatherapy Sugar Body Scrubs?

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Every goddess knows to at least moisturize her precious skin. The best time to saturate your skin with a moisturizer is post-shower- especially when your skin is still slightly damp. That way, your skin will absorb the product more effectively. Choose a rich body cream, lotion or body butter such as Nivea Body Smooth Sensation Daily Lotion.

Don‖t Neglect Your Puckers

Before you apply your lip-gloss or lipstick, don‖t forget to treat your lips like you treat the rest of your body. After you‖ve brushed your teeth, gently brush your lips with the same toothbrush as this will help remove dead skin cells. A more elaborate way to exfoliate your puckers is to use an exfoliater that is specifically made for dry, chapped lips. Try Philosophy Kiss Me Exfoliating Scrub or BeautiControl Lip Apeel. The Lip Apeel has a dual purpose as it includes a lip scrub and lip moisturizer- perfect for any winter goddess. With these tips, your skin will love you and be totally winter goddess-worthy.

By- Rylian S. Cooper

The first step to dressing a curvy body is to know your shape and be comfortable with your shape. You must know what shape your body is in. Are you more of a pear shape, where most of your weight is on the bottom? Are you an ice cream cone shape, where your weight is at the top and slim at the bottom? Are you rectangular, where your shoulders and hips are the same width? Are you are circle, where all of your weight is evenly distributed? Take a look at yourself in the mirror and be honest with the curvature of your body.

The good thing about curves is that with all of the twist and turns of your body, it

makes your clothes fit differently from everyone else. A curvy body is built on a good foundation, so we must start with the proper undergarments.

Bra fittings are a must. Our bodies go

through so many changes such as weight fluctuations and comfort levels that we have to make the proper adjustments. Make sure that you get a bra fitting at least once a year, especially if you see

“Dressing a Curvy Body”

Page 73: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

changes in how the bra is supporting you. Be sure to look for signs that indicate you need a bra fitting such as bulges on the sides and the “cup runneth over effect” where all of your breast are not safely secure in your bra.

Now that we have the top part taken care of, we can focus on the bottom. If you‖re not heavy on the top and carry most of your weight on your lower half, be sure to invest in a good body shaper. Body shapers or girdles will make your body look more firm as if you‖ve spent hours in the gym. When choosing your body shaper, make sure that it has some kind of boning in it that will smooth away the rolls and bumps that you want to hide. The girdle should be tight, but not uncomfortable. If you feel it

cutting into your skin that means it is too small and poorly constructed—throws it away immediately and rubs some cocoa butter on the marks left by the girdle, so you won‖t have any scars. With your foundation taken care of, you are now ready to enjoy your clothes. Be sure to pick styles that show your curves to their fullest potentials. Never wear oversized clothes because that will make you look bigger and slouchy.

Make sure your clothes have a

Page 74: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

shape to them other than the box look. Don‖t be afraid to try colors, patterns, and to accessorize with belts that will allow you to define your waist. Define your true silhouette by not settling for whatever is on the rack at the stores. If an outfit fits well, but you want to add a personal touch to it, invest in a tailor that could be found at your local cleaner. Sometimes designers do not take into consideration the way a plus-size body is made, so they automatically make copies of the same outfit with a bad shape that doesn‖t hug the body correctly. So, with a tailor, they can cut a seam here, add a dart there, and now you have a custom outfit made just for you.

My advice to anyone that is wondering how to dress their curves the

right way is to take chances, play dress up in the dressing room if you have to and get lost in fashion. Once you know what shapes work for you, you‖ll be able to enjoy the shopping experience. Do not be discouraged by an outfit that doesn‖t work on the first try; it just wasn‖t for

you, on to the next outfit or store! Also, be sure to not be blinded by the number in the garment. If it fits well and was made just for you, that‖s all that matters. Fashion is

all about fun and expressing yourself, so why not take full advantage of that in this lifetime.

Lace Front Wig

In the “wig world” there are many different assortments, types, styles, and even colors of the

wigs that you can purchase. In my opinion the lace front wigs are the best to choose from. They are the most realistic of any type of wig. The manufactures of the lace front wigs starts by hand-tying the strands of hair to a lace base so it gives the illusion of the hair actually growing from the persons scalp. You can basically tell people that your hair grew over night!!! Your friends can stare up close and yet they won‖t notice any

difference. The lace front wig is more comfortable and more natural than a hard front wig. Numerous celebrities including; Tyra Banks, Beyonce, Lil Kim, and also Ru Paul, are wearing the lace front wigs, to give them the most natural appearance and latest style. The different styles you can transform your wig into are

endless, it can be worn in high ponytails, chignons, or flowing down, parted in any direction you wish with a natural scalp appearance. If you have thinning hair,alopecia/balding, chemotherapy patient, or just want a change in fashion or style this style is definitely for you. Lace front wigs will last a lifetime, with minor repairs if cared for properly. You can wear them for 1 day or up to 3 weeks before removing, shampooing and reinstalling. It might be a little pricy but it is well worth it in the end for a beautiful wig.

The country is in a recession, millions of Americans are unemployed and basically, money is an issue all over. So what‖s a fashionista to do? Especially a plus size one…we already have issues with shopping and finding clothes that not only fit us properly and flatter us but that are also fashionable.

As the saying goes, “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” The recessionista has emerged! There are deals to be had out there. But you have to be willing to do some work and some research. Nothing ever comes easy, let me tell you.

Here are some of my essential shopping tips when on a budget, which I hope will help my fellow recessionistas in keeping both your wallet and closet in good shape.

Tip #1: Make some email, Facebook and Twitter connections with your favorite retailers

Make a list of retailers you love to shop with. Then do your research, look up their official

websites via Google or Bing. When on their site,

sign up for their emails. Most retailers also have a link on their homepage, which will allow you to follow them on Facebook and Twitter. Usually, you will receive an email from the retailer 1-2 times a week, notifying you of their latest sales and at times, offering you coupons to use online and/or in-store. With Facebook and Twitter, you will be updated daily. Most often, giveaways and time-sensitive deals will be posted on Facebook and Twitter more frequently.

For example, Torrid has been doing these lunchtime deals that last from 12-6pm Pacific Standard Time. They usually send out an email first but on Facebook, they continue to post the countdown to the sale. So if you have forgotten about it and are now on Facebook, you will get a reminder, which is great!

Hint, hint…in my opinion, Twitter has become the best vehicle in promoting sales. I love to travel and I have gotten great airfare deals via Twitter. JetBlue actually has what they call JetBlue Cheeps, which are last minute very

cheap fares that they post every Monday. So become “friends” with your fave retailer (or airline) today and you will save BIG.

Tip #2: Regularly check coupon and deal websites for great deals

Websites like Slickdeals and Fat Wallet post their best found deals on the front page of their sites. I make it a point to check these sites first thing in the morning and then in the evening. I actually got a pair of jeans on JCPenney.com for $8 from seeing the deal on Slickdeals. But be advised, these deals tend to sell out quickly so if you see a deal you want to get in on, don‖t wait too long. I have seen deals go dead in a matter

of hours.

Coupon sites like Coupon Mountain and Coupon Cabin also

have an abundance of coupons that you may not know about because they have not been mentioned in an email or on Facebook or Twitter. There will be times when you have not seen a coupon from a retailer for over a week or two and you need to hit the store. These

coupon sites help a lot during those times of need.

Tip #3: Time your shopping trips during the seasons

There are two seasons in the retail world: Spring/Summer and Fall/Winter. Spring/Summer items are usually launched in mid-January. Fall/Winter launches in late July. So if you time your shopping excursions, you might just be able to score some wear-now items on sale because the retail season is ending. For example, I just went to Avenue yesterday and all their winter stuff is on sale (up to 75% off) and their Spring items are out on display. Clearance was up to 80% off. I bought 3 tops and a pair of leggings for $24. Not bad, huh?

I do advise that if you see an item at the beginning of the season that you must have (like a coat, jacket or dress) and you are on either side of the size range (a size 14/16 or a 26/28, 30/32), don‖t wait too long to buy it because those sizes tend to sell out first. The 18/20‖s usually sell out last. Just make sure you have a coupon when purchasing that item so you still save!

Tip #4: Hit the clearance rack first and bypass the new items in front

Usually, the newest items are placed in the front area of the store with the clearance items way in the back. Some stores do tend to be more aggressive when they need to move merchandise and will have some clearance racks in the front of the store but that‖s not the norm. I usually head to the back and work my

Page 80: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

way up to the front. That way, I hit the clearance racks first and usually find everything I need there without tempting myself to buy something new that‖s not on sale.

Be prepared to dig and go through racks. Sometimes it can be exhausting but well worth it, if you find a few gems. I remember once digging into the clearance racks at Macy‖s in their plus section. After spending an hour (!) going thru racks, I found a DKNY dress for $10, an INC top for $7 and a Tommy Hilfiger tee for $7. Plus, I had a 15% off coupon so I was over the moon with that purchase! Diligence and patience are key. Also, it helps if you take a friend with you so that you can split the racks between the two of you.

Tip #5: Know what you‖re looking for beforehand

This is all about “need” vs. “want”. Those hot pink leggings might be $6 but do you really need them? Don‖t just buy something impulsively because it‖s on sale. Sure, you think you‖re saving money but that could be $6 you can spend on something else that you really need.

Also, buy what looks flattering on you. Try things on. Don‖t buy something that is ill fitting because it is on sale.

Lastly, stick with key pieces. Make a list of key items you need in your wardrobe and don‖t stray away from that list. Key pieces are timeless

and can be worn for many seasons to come. So it is truly an investment when buying key pieces such as a blazer, a pair of nice trousers, and etc. These are items you can carry over season to season.

Tip #6: Comparison shopping is key

The power of the shopper is that we have the power to shop around and find the best deal. We

don‖t have to settle for the first item we find. Comparing prices really helps when looking for key pieces.

So shop around online and in-store. See what deals each retailer is offering plus whatever coupons or shipping deals you can get. Sometimes online

retailers offer free shipping and that‖s a great way to get items cheaper. Use online

shopping comparison websites such as Google

Shopping, Price Grabber.com, and Shopzilla to help you

in comparing items.

Just remember to buy true to size since you won‖t be able to try it on until it arrives in the mail. If it doesn‖t fit, you‖ll have to send it back. Some stores, such as Lane Bryant, allow you to return in-store but not all retailers offer this option. So be sure to read the fine print and know the retailer‖s return policy before ordering.

Tip #7: It pays to be nice while in the store

Page 81: Goddess Magazine Feb - March 2011

A few months ago, I was in Toronto, visiting a friend and I went shopping at Penningtons, which is a plus size retailer in the area. The salespeople at Penningtons are wonderful. They come over and are very helpful. During this particular shopping trip, I was being really nice and chatty. I sincerely complemented the salesgirl on her dress and she proceeds to tell me that she bought it at the store and that it will be put on clearance for $5 next week. Wow! Well, after telling her that I was just visiting and would not be able to come back next week, she was nice enough to go in the stockroom and pull a dress for me. I got my $5 dress!

I have gotten coupons from people standing in line with me at the register or from sales girls‖ in-store. Sometimes it doesn‖t hurt to be nice to the cashier and then ask her if she has any coupons you can use. It‖s not exactly procedure, I will admit. But it‖s worth a try. In the end, it does pay to be nice.

Tip #8: Don‖t dismiss vintage, secondhand stores as well as Craigslist, eBay and flea markets

There are great finds in vintage and secondhand shops. There are even a growing number of these shops geared towards the plus size customer. In Brooklyn, New York, there is a shop called Re/Dress that carries size 12-32 and they have items from an array of plus size designers such as Monif C and Abby Z. In Toronto, Canada, there is a shop called Curvy Consignments that offers great pieces in sizes 14 – 32. In this case, Google is your friend. Just type in “plus size vintage <your city name

here>” or “plus size consignment <your city name here>” and see what results you get.

Craigslist and eBay are also great ways to find plus size clothing on the cheap. Most of the sellers on eBay will allow you to buy the item at that moment so there is no need to stress over

bidding for it. As always, be careful with who you do business with. Check their ratings and other buyer‖s reviews before making your purchase. Same with Craigslist – always be careful with what ads you respond to. The safest ones are usually those promoting apartment sales and big clothing sales. Always read the ad in full and ask lots of questions so you know everything up front and there are no misunderstandings.

Shopping on a budget is not easy but it is possible, if you are willing to do the research and footwork. It‖s all in the name of fashion – and well worth it when you find that one item that makes you fall in love with its look and its price. Happy shopping, my fellow recessionistas!

The Perfect Pout

Women have had questions for years

about their lips. What is the best shade

lipstick? What about the shape? How can I

fix the unevenness and discoloration? Fear no

more ladies the prefect pout is only a few

simple steps away.

How to apply

Start from the bow or center of lips. You can

use a lip brush or straight from the container.

Start with a down stroke on both sides of your

upper lip. Then across the bottom lip from

corner to corner. Once you have the color in

place blot so that you pick up any excess

color. You do not want lipstick on your teeth.

Longer lasting Color

To make your color last longer you can fill

your lips completely in with a lip liner and

apply color, or once your color is completely

on place tissue over your lips. Take your

powder brush

and apply loose powder over the tissue. It

should last longer than normal wear.

Gloss

Not into lipstick lip then gloss is a great

option. It is sheer fun. There is nothing hotter

for an evening or weekend look then shiny,

sexy, sultry lips. Lip gloss can range from full

pigment (which means a little thicker in

texture and richer color), medium (moderate

thickness with color), and sheer (not as thick

with see through color). Experiment with

color and texture.

A word from the Artist

Your lips are screaming for a change if you

wear the same shade daily. Boost up your

perfect pout by trying a little bit lip gloss in

the middle of your bottom lip. It is great for

an evening lip or just plain fun all around. It

is fun to try something new and different.

Grab your

girlfriends, and

make it a

shopping day for

your new shade

of gloss or

lipstick. Please

remember to

protect the lips

with a SPF. If you do not like gloss there are

several companies that make colored lip balm

with and without SPF if you are allergic. If

your lipstick has a tendency to bleed (color

runs into the wrinkles or creases around the

lips) try the long wear lip products. They stay

in place once applied but, can be drying. Use

lip liner afterwards for definition and a more

polished appearance. There is a special non

sticky lip gloss that comes with it to apply

over color. Oil products break the seal of the

long wear formula.

Recommendations

Pink – is a HOT

color that looks

great on everyone.

Remember there are

different shades

from pale to knock

your socks off. Find

the shade that is perfect you.

I want to hear from you. If there is a topic

that you want covered in the future makeup

columns. Please email me so that I can

research it and get you the answers you need.

So back to the fairytales

I often think that the princess‖s in old fashioned fairytales lead very sheltered lives and somewhat pampered boring ones at that, I mean sitting around waiting to get rescued please save me from boredom.

I mean who really gets to have all the fun and adventure? I mean yes there are some kick butt princesses out there, but look at sleeping beauty asleep for 100years or until kissed, snow white-cook and cleaner to 7 little men, poisoned and then yep asleep, Cinderella another glorified maid, etcetera but you see the point

Whilst as a woman we all think we want to be treated like princess and hey being spoilt on occasion is wonderful it isn‖t something that is going to make us happy if we get it all the time! Let‖s face it we are going get bored with it sooner or later or just want

more and more.

Now the prince totally gets to have all the fun and adventure. He gets to go on the quest to set the mythical princess free. He gets to slay the dragon (the demons of the past that often bind us in our present day), go on the long quest to set the princess free (the journey inwards towards our true inner self), fight the evil queen/wizard (learn from our mistakes and release the negativity we build up as well as negative self beliefs, and behavior patterns).

Princes often need to learn to be completely in the moment and think on their feet (use their intuition), utilize all the skills they possess (fighting, intelligence, humor, charm, whit, ECT). They are

often full of inner confidence and bravado. (Who couldn‖t use a little bravado in their lives to give us the courage to face those things we fear) and in general they go fearlessly traipsing into danger to rescue the princess and find love and happiness. We need to go fearlessly through life, to walk our talk and live the adventure and believe we can make it through the obstacles and brick walls that life throws in our path, I know for me I would much rather follow in the princes footsteps than be a pampered princess! Sure it‖s tougher to be the prince, more work, more challenges but if you truly think about it it is also far more rewarding. So the next time you‖re faced with a choice, maybe it‖s time to choose to be the prince (metaphorically speaking) rather than the princess.

Till next we meet on life‖s journey, enjoy the adventures life has to offer you, go forth fearlessly and with confidence knowing that you can choose which role you want to play.
