Can I ask each of you to think about how you see the IGK, when you do please think of “us” as a “we,” not a “me.”

A couple of people have decided to move out of the IGK. While it may be sad, it is OK, OK for them and OK for those of us that remain. Perhaps one day they will return.

In this edition of Goju no Seimei I have given you my personal watashi goju no seimei, Sorry, but it helps to fill the pages!

WATASHI GOJU NO SEIMEI 私剛柔之生命 : MY GOJU LIFE: JOHN COLLETT

Hi there!

My name is John Collett (my real name is William Collett but that is another story.)

You might know me as Collett Shihan, although I prefer the title sensei in the dojo, I am better known simply as “JC” or occasionally as “Messiah,” thanks for that one Watusi. I have been involved in the Japanese martial arts since 1963 when I started in what was then the rather exotic martial art of Judo at my local PCYC after viewing a newsreel about it at the cinema in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympic Games.

In truth, I started in amateur boxing, but I quickly grew tired of blocking every punch with my face!

After a while I grew tired of the competitive aspect of Judo and drifted off to look for something else. In those early days, like so many beginning martial artists I floated here and there, not really knowing what it was I was looking for but knowing I hadn't found it yet!

After witnessing a “friendly contest” between three brothers who were close friends of the family, one a boxer, another a Tae Kwon Do practitioner and the third a Jujutsuan 柔術家 Jujutsuka that resulted in one broken arm and an assortment of

cuts and bruises I decided to give Jujutsu a try.

However, it wasn’t until 1972 after moving to Darwin for work that I found my place in the world of budo when I met and became a student of Master Raymond Lea, a senior student of the late Professor KAM Hock Hoe and now the master level instructor and president of the Kokusai Jujutsu Kenkyukai 國際柔術研究会 International Jujutsu

Research Society

I remain to this day a student and close friend of Master Lea and assist him with research into and promotion of Professor KAM Hock Hoe’s Hyou-ha Bankoku Jujutsu 豹派萬國柔術 Panther Lineage International Jujutsu

Goju no Seimei ~ This Goju Life – 3 – 2017 #2 July 2017 Edition

In parallel to jujutsu under Master Lea I was practicing a number of other martial arts including the Korean art Tang Soo Do under the late Robert Caputo Sabumnim 사범님 Instructor JKA Shotokan karate, Taiji Quan and other Chinese martial

disciplines. Most of my non-jujutsu training however, has been in Goju-ryu Kenpo under the guidance of Tino CEBERANO Hanshi of the IGK or Kokusai Goju Kobujutsu Kenkyukai 国際剛柔古武術研究会 International Goju Classical Martial Arts Research Society and my Sempei

Warwick SHEILS Shihan and Alex ALT Kyoushi starting some where in the early 1980s in the Canberra Dojo run by the Sheils family. Back then of course we were still part of the Yamaguchi-ha Goju-kai.

My earliest introduction to Goju-ryu was in 1972 when my friend Wayne Johnson Sensei, then something like yonkyu green Now Yondan lead a Goju-kai Goju-ryu study group at the back of the old Darwin PCYC.

Back in those early days I went out of my way to stay in the background and just enjoy the training but in recent years Ceberano Hanshi and Sheils Shihan and my old Canberra Seifukan 西風館 Dojo of the West Wind dojo mates forced my hand and made

me “go public” as it were, for that I think I thank them!

As I have matured I have come to understand that these two arts are closely coupled with each providing skills and philosophies that enhance the other.

Over the last few years I have managed to damage my body somewhat and training has been difficult, but I have been able to teach and assist Ceberano Hanshi from time to time.

It is one of my greatest joys to see that my two principle teachers, Master Lea and Ceberano Hanshi have become friends and are actively cooperating in the development of the IGK and that I am able, with others to assist in that development.

The other great joy that has come to me from my more that 50 years in budo are the few close friends that I have across the world that keep on keeping on passing on the many skills and philosophies that we share.

While I have pretty much been off the dojo floor of late I have been quite busy with one thing or another. I have been helping Ceberano Hanshi with the development of new IGK Handbooks, putting this newsletter together, travelling with Ceberano Hanshi to Oahu for training and to Kauai where I had the great pleasure to spend time with a gentlemen by the name of Dallas (Grady) Watenabe of Shorin-ryu fame who I hope you will all get an opportunity to meet in the future as he has the “dirt” on many historical karate events! I have also had the pleasure with Master Lea’s approval to re-develop three of the Kokusai Jujutsu Kenkyukai’s Kuatsu courses Kuatsu is a traditional Japanese method of lethal striking and reanimation for teaching to IGK seniors.

I now find myself with a new knee and a new hip and I am becoming much more mobile. This is allowing me to get back to work on my tiny personal dojo, the Minaputakan 南風歌館 Hall of the Southern Wind Song here in the beautiful Barossa Valley and I

hope to have just a few students there and to be training again myself by the latter part of this year.

This also lets me get back to another project that is close to my heart, which is to examine non-traditional kata. I am pleased to see that Steve Dare Shihan has taken up the flame of keeping the Niipai 二十八歩 28 Steps kata alive because that allows

me to concentrate on the Tumaidi 泊手 Tomari-te kata Arakaki no Sochin 新垣の壮鎮 Arakaki’s

Men of Peace that at least in part feels very much like a Nafadi 那覇手 Naha-te kata. This

kata would have been known to our founder MIYAGI Chojun Sensei 宮城 長順 April 25,

1888—October 8, 1953 as he trained initially with ARAKAKI Ryuko Sensei 新垣 龍子 1875-1961 Today

this kata is mainly practiced in Suidi 首里手 Shuri-te schools. While familiar in feel it also

exposes a Goju-ryu practitioner to “other” methods that I think add a new dimension to our Goju-ryu way of doing things.

Another kata I am examining is Kusanku no Jiffa 公相君の夹发 Kusanku’s Hairpin – this kata

closely resembles the Suidi kata of the same name but is practiced in Goju-ryu’s sister Nafadi school Uechi-ryu 上地流 Originally called Pangai-noon 半硬軟 "half-hard, half-soft" as a

weapons kata using the Jiffa haipins as a weapon. I am looking at adapting Kusanku no Kata to the IGK method and using Dulo-dulo Filipino Hand stick, Kaiken 懐剣 Dagger and

Karambit Filipino Rice Knife in addition to the Jiffa.

A few facts and figures, I currently hold the following grades: • IJRS Menkyo Souden: Jujutsu: Licence of Direct Transmission • IJRS Hachidan: Jujutsu: 8th Dan • IJRS Menkyo Kuatsu Senmonka: Kuatsu & Hakuda Kempo: Licenced Kuatsu Specialist • IGK Godan Goju-ryu Kenpo: 5th Dan • DNBK Godan Karate-do: Certified 5th Dan in Japanese Karate-do

I currently hold the following teaching titles: • IJRS teaching title of Souden Shihan • IGK teaching title of Shihan

I am a member of the following organizations: • Member Kokusai Jujustu Kenkyukai (IJRS) International Jujutsu Research Society • Member of the IJRS Shihankai • Member of the Kokusai Goju Kobujutsu Kenkyukai (IGK) International Goju Clasiccal Martial Arts Research Society • Member of the IGK Shihankai • Member of the Australian Jujutsu Association • Certified member of the Dai Nippon Butokukai International Division (DNBK) • Member of the Kokusai Bugei Hozonkai International Martial Arts Preservation Society • Member of the Hyou-ha Bankoku Jujutsu Zen Domei-kai Hyou-ha Bankoku Jujutsu Alliance

For me, I love my family and my friends and I do have other interests, but in all honesty I can’t envision a future without budo.

TECHNICALLY SPEAKING: BE THE KATA

Warwick SHEILS Shihan TO BE OR NOT TO BE?

One of the most famous questions posed over the years. Of course Shakespeare was not writing about the martial arts, or in particular about kata training. What am I talking about? How do you achieve great kata? I don’t mean just good kata, I’m talking

about the platinum standard of kata. I am going to share with you an insight into what your kata is really all about, with some bits and pieces of conversations I had during my Shihan grading with Ceberano Hanshi.

Extensive conversations with Hanshi sometimes left my head spinning, and it’s nice to know that despite what I think I have mastered in kata, there is so much more to do, to learn and a greater depth to true kata training. Such things are just as true for the novice exercise Sanchin-shuho 三戦手法 4 Direction movement exercise as they are for

Kururunfa Kata 久留頓破 Godan kata: “Holding Ground” or any other kata for that matter. There is

a certain intangible quality to kata when it’s done correctly. What is it, how do we find it for ourselves then?

We already know some of the elements that combine to make the execution of a kata “good.” Balance is essential. But what is balance? Are we talking about the mere capacity to stay on our feet, or is there more to it? Posture, is this the same as balance, an aspect of balance or a completely autonomous quality? Correct form in the stance, combined with correct posture contributes to good balance. Without these basic attributes the kata is compromised and limited in its potential. Is there more to balance than these basic concepts? What about our own personal energy systems, cardio vascular cycles and the energy commonly referred to as “Chi” energy?

There are other physical qualities of good kata that we can readily identify. Good technique, timing and power. Solid contrast between the hard and the soft movements, explosive speed with precision and control are further elements that spring to mind. The initial task of learning your kata is to master the physical exercise. You need to be able to move with grace and power without conscious thought of what comes next. In other words, knowing the sequence of events so that you can start, then not have to concentrate on that sequence in order to complete it correctly. There are other things that require your attention once you can do this.

Now you understand that we cannot be satisfied with the physical attributes of kata when considering what it is that makes your kata extraordinary. Here then, is a simple truth. Good kata requires more than physical effort and discipline! You need to develop an understanding of the techniques you are using, explore potential applications through kyougi-gumite 教義組手 Self-defence Application from the kata and

kumite 組手 Fighting exercise Accept the idea that the possible applications you can find

in kata are only limited by your imagination and experience. Consider how much more you know about your kata, and what it means now, than you did when you first learned it?

Page 12: Goju no Seimei 2017-2 July2017 - Minaputa no Seimei_2017-2_July2017.pdfKenkyukai’s Kuatsu courses Kuatsu is a traditional Japanese method of lethal striking and reanimation for teaching

Goju no Seimei ~ This Goju Life – 12 – 2017 #2 July 2017 Edition

Kata is not merely the replication of physical movement. Changes of direction, balance, power, timing, speed, and technique are all parts of the kata, but what is it behind these things? It’s how you express yourself through these movements with intention, understanding of the technique and determination. I’m talking about the “emotional content” Bruce Lee touched on in the film Enter the Dragon. It’s about who you are, and the journey of discovering yourself and your karate. Kata is as much a spiritual experience as it is physical work. Imagine the difference between a computer generated dancer and Nureyev doing the same ballet. Which one is better?

CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING STORY: During the civil wars in feudal Japan, an invading army would quickly sweep into a town and take control. In one particular village, everyone fled just before the army arrived - everyone except the Zen master. Curious about this old fellow, the general went to the temple to see for himself what kind of man this master was. When he wasn't treated with the deference and submissiveness to which he was accustomed, the general burst into anger. "You fool," he shouted as he reached for his sword, "don't you realize you are standing before a man who could run you through without blinking an eye!" But despite the threat, the master seemed unmoved. "And do you realize," the master replied calmly, "that you are standing before a man who can be run through without blinking an eye?"

I’m not suggesting kata training makes us something we’re not, nor would I provoke a crazed soldier with a sword in his hand. However, there is something to be said about the calmness and power of this Zen masters response.

Clearly kata is about training the mind, body and spirit The three battles of Sanchin! In the first instance we need to master the physical part of kata, constantly refining and rehearsing the sequence of events until we no longer have to think during the kata. Once your mind is free, ah now that is another story for another time.

Kata training may not make us Zen masters, but dedicated and sincere kata training will empower us to master ourselves … eventually. Mastery of oneself is only a beginning though. Surrender yourself to the experience of kata one day and see what happens. I won’t spoil the surprises you’ll find there because your kata is about you, not me.

Think about it. Next time don’t just do the kata, BE THE KATA!

For your added consideration, some fundamental points about your kata that must be considered, consciously at first but eventually as second nature, when practicing.

It looks a little overwhelming at first glance, but don’t sweat it, little by little is all it takes.

1 YOI NO KISHIN 用意の起信: Preparing one’s mind – Readiness, concentration, will and

determination against your opponent before starting the kata

2 RENZOKU NODO 連続濃度: Continous Concentration – while performing the kata think

only of the kata

3 CHIKARA NO KYOJAKU 力の強弱: Strength, Power – Correct method in using power, the

amount of power used for each movement and posture

4 WAZA NO KANKYU 技の緩急: Speed in technique – Correct speed and agility used in

each movement and posture

5 TAI NO SHINSHUKU 体の伸縮: Expansion and contraction of body – The amount of

contraction and expansion for each movement

6 KOKYU 呼吸: Breathing – Correct exhalation and inhalation in each movement

7 CHAKUGAN 着 眼 : Directing one’s attention (to), Aim (at), Eye Contact – Considering the aim and destination of technique

8 KIAI 気合: A shout used to concentrate the mind at a point – Kiai in one or more

certain points, Kiai shows the soul of fight in a kata – Additionally, the whole conducted power is released

9 HYOSHI 拍子 : Timing, rhythm, tempo – Correct accentuation and flow of the

movement through a kata and each combination in a kata

10 KIME 決め: A conclusion, an end, a decision, reaching a settlement –Focal point or

Focus refers to the concentration of all the energy of the body in the instant a particular technique (blocks, kicks, punches and…) makes contact with its target

11 ANTEI 安定: Stability, steadiness – Balance adjusting, using the correct stance in

each movement

12 KEITAI NO HOJI 携帯の保持: Keeping a form, a shape – Using each technique in its

correct place maintaining correct form

13 ZANSHIN 殘心: Remaining attention, Awareness – Being fully aware, being in guard

position at the end of kata - Looking towards the correct point when kata is finished

14 IN-YO 陰-阴: Yin-Yang – Active and passive – Knowing whether you are attacking

or defending

WHAT’S NEW AROUND THE IGK:A sneak peak at the near future

KNOBBY-NAKKA AND KNOBBOY-CHAKU

Ceberano Hanshi has developed two new “weighted chord” weapons for use in his Goju-kalis IGK Goju Kobujutsu

For the first weapon he has coined the name “Knobby-nakka,” ノビー ナッカ for the

second he has coined the name “Knobby-chaku” ノビー チャク

Example of the Knobby-nakka (top and Knobby-chaku (Bottom)

The knobby-nakka is a length of chord with a weight at one end, the knobby-chaku is weighted at both ends, thus resembling a nunchaku ヌンチャク

Both of these weapons most closely resemble the traditional Japanese weapon known as Kusari-fundo 鎖分銅 Weighted chain or more accurately Tsuru-fundo 弦分銅 Weighted

Chord the knobby-chakku would probably be called Sotsuru-fundo 双弦分銅 in Japanese.

On Okinawa both weapons would be called suruchin スルーイン or surujin

Examples of Kusari-fundo

Examples of Suruchin – Traditional on the Left – Modern on the right

The following notes are based on the traditional Japanese weapons but they hold equally for Ceberano Hanshi’s creations.

KUSARI-FUNDO: is a hand held weapon used in feudal Japan, consisting of a length of chain 鎖 Kusari with a weight 分銅 Fundo attached to each end of the chain. Various

sizes and shapes of chain and weight were used as there was no set rule on the construction of these weapons. Other popular names are manrikigusari 萬力鏈 Great

Force chain or simply manriki 萬力 Great Force

KUSARI THE CHAIN: The chain is typically the length of the forged chain could vary from around 12 inches 30 cm up to 48 inches 120 cm The chain links could have many different shapes including round, elliptical, and egg-shaped. The thickness of the chain also varied. Usually the first link of chain attached to the weight was round and often larger and thicker than the rest of the links of the chain.

FUNDO THE WEIGHT: The weight attached to each end of the chain could have many different sizes and shapes. The weights were usually exactly matched in size and shape. On some of the related chain and weight weapons the weights could be completely different from each other, with one weight being much longer than the other like a handle on one end, or one weight could be round while the other weight could be rectangular. Weight shapes include round, hexagonal, or rectangular. The weight could be fairly light or quite heavy with the typical weight being from 2 ounces 56 grams to 4 ounces 112 grams

USE: The use of the kusari-fundo was taught in several different ryu 流 Schools as a

hidden or concealed weapon and also as a self-defense weapon. The kusari-fundo was useful when carrying a sword was not allowed or impractical, and samurai police of the Edo period would often use a kusari-fundo as one of their non-lethal arresting weapons.

HISTORY: There are several chain and weight weapons. One type known as a konpi 魂飛 Flying Soul? is mentioned in manuscripts as far back as the Nanbokucho period 南北朝

時代 1336-1392

In Chinese martial traditions this weapon is known as a Liuxing chui 流星錘 Meteor Hammer

Examples of the Meteor Hammer

Ceberano Hanshi is actively developing drills and methods for the use of these weapons but an enterprising senior could well engage with Ceberano Hanshi on adapting a traditional Okinawan kata like Maezato no suruchin 前里のスルーイン from

SHINKEN Taira Sensei 平 信賢 1897–1970 or Minowa no suruchin 箕輪のスルーイン from MINOWA

Katsuhiko Sensei 前里 克彦? or one of the numerous nunchaku kata to our use.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY: MIYAGI CHOJUN SENSEI 宮城 長順 April 25, 1888—October 8, 1953

MIYAGI Chojun Sensei was born into an aristocratic family. His family was in the import/export business, and owned two ships which made regular trips to mainland China, placing them among the wealthiest families in the area. He began training at the age of 11 under ARAKAKI Ryuko Sensei 新垣 龍子 1875-1961 a

teacher of Tumaidi 泊手 Tomari-te who in

1902 when Miyagi Sensei was 14 years old introduced him to his main teacher HIGAONNA Higashionna Kanryo Sensei 東恩納

寛量 March 10, 1853 – October 1915 Leader of the

Nafadi Naha-te tradition.

Like HIGAONNA Sensei before him, because of his great natural talent and fierce determination, he progressed very rapidly.

Founder of Goju-ryu: MIYAGI Chojun

The training was severe beyond belief at times but he practiced ever harder with an enthusiasm unmatched by few if any of the other students. MIYAGI Sensei became an uchi deshi 内弟子Private Student of HIGAONNA Sensei. He studied with him for

14 years until his teacher's death.

Goju no Seimei ~ This Goju Life – 18 – 2017 #2 July 2017 Edition

As a successor to leadership of the Nafadi tradition MIYAGI Sensei pushed himself to the limits of endurance in his desire to emulate the extraordinary skill of his teacher. To this end in 1915 he journeyed to Fuzhou, China, the city where his teacher had studied the martial arts, to further his research. This was one of three trips he made to China during his lifetime. On his return to Okinawa he began to teach the martial arts at his home in Naha. Later, he also taught at the Okinawan Prefecture Police Training Center, at the Okinawan Master's Training College, and at the Naha Commercial High School.

MIYAGI Sensei worked hard to spread karate throughout Okinawa and mainland Japan, and to earn Nafadi a status equal to that of the highly respected Japanese martial arts of Judo and Kendo. To achieve this he travelled frequently to mainland Japan where he was invited to teach karate at Kyoto University and Ritsumei Kan University.

In 1933 karate was registered at the DNBK 大日本 武徳會 Dai Nippon Butokukai at that time the

centre of all martial arts in Japan. This was a milestone for karate as it meant that it was recognised on a level with the highly respected martial arts of Japan.

MIYAGI Sensei dedicated his whole life to karate. He was responsible for structuring his version of Nafadi which he later named Goju-Ryu into a systematised discipline which could be taught to society in general. This teaching system enabled karate to be taught in schools for the benefit of the young, and to reach vast numbers of people throughout the world. However, his private teaching at his home remained strictly in adherence to the principles of his teacher, HIGAONNA Kanryo Sensei, and his teacher RYU Ruko Shifu before him.

MIYAGI Sensei died on October 8th, 1953, at the age of 65.
