COMMON NAMES

• Gotu Kola

• Man-t'ien-hsing

Gotu kola is a slender herb found growing as a perennial in much of the tropics. Theherb has peculiar shaped leaves, which have an almost smooth surface and are shaped

like a kidney or almost heart shaped. The plant also bears dark purple flower petals

these appendages give the form of the plant somewhat of an e!"uisite or fragile

appearance. The plant is very hard to cultivate, and many efforts to do so have often

failed, though the plant is rather obstinate and hardy in the wild and grows as a weed in

many places. #or e!ample, gotu kola sub$ected to spraying with herbicides, will result

in only the death of the leaves, the root of the plant on the other hand seems to thrive on

these harmful substances. The plants growing as weeds still proliferate ama%ingly well

even following one good spraying.

Much of the swampy areas in tropical countries such as &ndia and ri (anka, in outh

)frica, and the other tropical regions of the *ew +orld have thriving populations of this

creeping perennial herb. Gotu kola is the common name of the herb however, the herb

is also called the hydrocotyle or the &ndian pennywort in many places where it grows.

Traditionally the people of ri (anka have observed that one of the longest living

mammals, the elephants fed e!tensively on the plant in the wild. This may have been

the initial cause for the use of this plant and its subse"uent reputation as a promoter of

longevity in people who eat it. &t is commonly held that the consumption of a few leaves

of the gotu kola every day will strengthen and revitali%e worn out bodies and brains.

)t the same time, traditionally, herbalists have used the gotu kola in treating peopleaffected by all sorts of mental troubles, by high blood pressure problems, by the

presence of abscesses, by rheumatism, and it has also been used in the treatment of

fever , in treating ulcers, in treating cases of leprosy, problems like skin eruptions, all

sorts of nervous disorders, as well as $aundice. ) considerable reputation that the herb

has ac"uired in recent times, is as an aphrodisiac - a chemical agent that has an ability

to stimulate and promote se!ual desire as well as heighten se!ual ability in people. &n

ri (anka, the crushed leaves of gotu kola are commonly eaten, either in the form of a

hot beverage or as a green salad.

PARTS USED

)erial parts.

USES

&n the ancient &ndian system of medicine known as ayurveda, the gotu kola has been

used for thousands of years and has a prominent position in all ayurvedic medicine. &n

this ancient system, remedies made from the gotu kola are used especially for the

treatment of leprosy, all kinds of skin ulcers, and all skin problems in general.

The power of re$uvenation is attributed to the gotu kola, this particular reputation as are$uvenator, herb has been linked to the gotu kola for a long time. The herb is believed

Page 2: Gota Kola

to aid mental concentration as well as memory in people. /emedies made from the gotu

kola are also used to boost fertility and are used in the role of a tonic for improving poor

digestion as well as in the treatment of rheumatism in different people.

The gotu kola is used in treating children for dysentery, a few freshly plucked leaves of

the herb is given to the affected children along with the daily meal. Gotu kola remediesare also believed to be helpful in the treatment of fevers, as well as in alleviating all

kinds of abdominal disorders, in the treatment of asthma, and in the treatment of

bronchitis. The gotu kola is also used in the form of an oil e!tract to promote hair

growth in people affected by balding and hair loss.

Gotu kola medications are mainly utili%ed in the treatment of skin problems and topical

wounds, this is despite the reputation it has as a tonic herb. The anti-inflammatory

action of the gotu kola is also now being considered to be effective and helpful and it is

normally given for the herbal treatment of rheumatism, problems like rheumatoid

arthritis, and in cases of poor venous circulation affecting patients.

Other medical uses

0hronic venous insufficiency, wollen )nkles.

HABITAT AND CULTIVATION

The gotu kola grows native in most of the tropics, though it is believed to be a native

species of &ndia it also grows in the wild in the southern 1 states. )t the same time,

wild populations of the gotu kola herb are also seen growing in the tropical and

subtropical parts of )ustralia, the outhern parts of )frica, as well as the outh

)merican tropics. The gotu kola herb tends to prefer marshy areas and riverbanks in thetropics. +hile it is hard to grow, the gotu kola is cultivated from seeds during the spring

season, while commercially it is usually gathered from the wild. 2arvesting of the aerial

parts of the herb is usually carried out throughout the year in many places.

RESEARCH

The organic compounds present in the gotu kola have been investigated for their

properties in many studies. &nitial research conducted during the3445s suggested that

the asiaticocide and thankuniside fractions in the herb may actually reduce fertility in

people. This shocking discovery naturally contrasts with one of the main traditional usesof the herb in &ndia-where it was usually taken to boost fertility by people.

/emedies made from the gotu kola herb have been known to thin the blood of the

person, at the same time when used in larger dosages, the herb has been shown to aid in

lowering elevated blood sugar  levels in patients.

(aboratory tests on small animals have shown a definite sedative action during

scientific studies conducted using relatively large doses of the herbal medication. The

sedative action is induced by two saponin glycosides present in the herb, which are

designated brahminoside and brahmoside. ome anti-inflammatory action is also

e!hibited by another glycoside, called madecassoside, at the same time, the compoundcalled asiaticoside, also seems to stimulate the healing of wounds on the body. 6n the

main traditional use of the herb, namely as a promoter of longevity, however, there is

little evidence and all the current research does not support gotu kola as a longevity

promoter. )t the same time, no research can substantiate the other e!travagant claims of

gotu kola as a revitali%ing and healing herbal remedy. Gotu kola is one of the few

famous herbs, the usage of which is not supported by substantive data about

comparative safety and efficiency - almost no data e!ists.

USUAL DOSAGE

7osages for different types of gotu kola differ, and are given on a case by case basis. )n

herbal tea can be prepared from the dried gotu kola leaves by adding 3-8 teaspoons of

the leaves to 395 ml of boiling water . This must be allowed to steep in the boiling ware

for 35 to 39 minutes at a stretch to allow the herb to infuse into the water. 7osage of this

tea is usually three cups of the herbal tea per day per person. The gotu kola based herbal

tincture can also be taken at doses of 35-85 ml thrice every day by affected individuals.

)t the same time, the standardi%ed gotu kola e!tracts which contain up to 355: totaltriterpenoids in them are also usually taken at ;5 mg doses one or two times daily by

some patients.

SIDE EECTS AND CAUTIONS

There is rarely any problem or side effect with gotu kola usage, with the rare e!ception

of people who are allergic to the herb the only known problems which have been

encountered are an occasional case of nausea if the doses of the herb are e!cessively

high. )t the same time, breast feeding women and pregnant women must avoid the use

of any gotu kola based remedy in all cases.

Gotu kola is used in traditional 0hinese medicine.

Gotu kola <0entella asiatica= is a creeping herbaceous plant native to the wetlands of

0hina and &ndia. #rom )sia it has spread throughout the tropical and subtropical regions

of the world, including the southeastern 1nited tates. This edible herb is also known as

coinwort, )siatic pennywort and mandukaparni. &t has been used in traditional 0hinese

and &ndian medicine to treat such ailments as insomnia, an!iety, skin lesions and

scleroderma, according to the 1niversity of Maryland Medical 0enter. Gotu kola is easy

to grow outdoors in warm climates. &t is hardy in 17) %ones > to 33.

Gotu kola has been known for centuries, valued for treating leprosy and tuberculosis

relieving the pain of rheumatism and arthritis to increase brain capacity and for

the sun, for a time, each day. &n )ncient 0hina, the herb was a principal ingredient in an

eli!ir called Dfo ti tiengE, a mi!ture that was called the fountain of youth. Many

herbalists have called gotu kola? the finest of all herb tonics. &t appears, they say, to have

no e"ual in the treatment of general debility and decline. 7igestion is strengthened <no

doubt aided by the bitter properties= and food better utili%ed, with the process of overall

metabolism, increased. Gotu kola has been called Da pharmacy in one herbE, offeringimpressive benefits. &n &ndia, gotu kola is a traditional remedy for skin conditions,

wounds and bruises. +ith controlled tests, in which an e!tract of gotu kola was applied,

to 85 people, suffering with slow healing wounds? ;C: of the wounds healed

completely and 3;: improved considerably. )t ydney 1niversity, research on wound

healing is being carried out, following invitro studies on the herb. &t is one of the most

important, re$uvenating herbs in )yurvedic medicine, particularly valued for?

revitalising nerve and brain cells, promoting calmness and clarity, helping poor memory

and lack of concentration, increasing meditation ability and to help balance the left and

right hemispheres of the brain. Falued as a brain food, for improving intelligence and

refle!es, it has been a herb students have used for? renewing mental alertness, clarity,

and energy levels, without the D$itterinessE some people may e!perience with coffee. &tcan be used throughout life. Gotu kola contains neither caffeine, nor theobromine.

&t was the life history of the renowned 0hinese herbalist Arofessor (i 0hung Hun, who

lived to the age of 89; years <having outlived 8B wives= which made the western world

aware of the true value of herbs for longevity. 2erbs he recommended, most highly,

were gotu kola and ginseng. 2e was born in 3;>> and in 34BB the *ew Hork Times

announced the death of this remarkable 6riental, whose life span had reached over two

and a half centuries. The 0hinese Government officially recorded his age. Arofessor (i,

at the age of 855 years still gave courses of lectures for 8I weeks at a time, each lecture

on longevity lasting B hours, at a 0hinese 1niversity. Those who learned from him,

declared that he did not appear older that a man of 95, standing straight, strong and had

his own natural teeth and head of hair. esides recommending life-e!tending herbs, his

lectures gave clear-cut guidelines, for those who wished to en$oy a long life. 2e

stressed one should never be in a hurry ... take it easy ... take your time. 2e taught his

students to sit as calmly as a tortoise, walk as sprightly as a bird, and sleep as soundly as

a dog. 2e advocated avoiding e!tremes of emotion of all kinds, especially as a person

grows older, as nothing drains energy from the body as rapidly, or disrupts the

functional harmony of vital organs, as completely, as stress or strong outbursts of

emotion. 7aily physical e!ercise and deep breathing was important, as also was a

simple, primarily vegetarian, diet and on hot, summer nights, over-eating should be

avoided <as it causes stagnation of the blood and lowered energy=. 6n cold, wintermornings, e!tra "uantities of nourishing foods should be eaten, to provide the e!tra

essence and energy the body re"uired, for keeping warm. &t is said that in the 6rient,

where gotu kola is primarily regarded as a herb for longevity, there are many recorded

e!amples of unusual longevity, attained by those who used the plant, regularly.

@lephants seek out gotu kola as a favourite food. 0ould it be that the strength of the

animal, the unfailing memory and its long life, are due to regular consumption of the

herbJ )fter (i 0hung HunEs death in 34BB, numerous research pro$ects e!plored the

properties of gotu kola and undertook various trials, with wound healing, duodenal

ulcers, to enhance memory skills, tumours, etc. &n &ndia, scientific documentation of

clinical tests, by 7r.M.F./. )ppa /as and his associates, showed increased mental

activity of children in the trials. #ifteen, mentally retarded children were given a 955mgtablet of powdered gotu kola daily. )fter trials of three months, the children showed

Gotu kola has always been known as a remarkable herb with a multitude of uses, and of

special benefit for chronic, degenerative diseases. )s one of itEs common names implies,

D&ndian GinsengE, it is similar to ginseng in its actions. &n fact, some herbalists regard

gotu kola as highly as ginseng, and more affordable? besides, it is easy to grow. *ote,

gotu kola is not +ithania somnifera, which also has the common name of &ndian

ginseng <see p 3C3=. & always find it most interesting, when & dig a plant, that may be B

to 9 years or more of age, that the root has a resemblance to ginseng root, and to the

torso of the human body. This indicates a doctrine of signatures significance, of Dlikecures likeE, a herb which benefits so many ailments of the body.

Throughout history, gotu kola has been used for a wide range of health problems, which

have included?

)77, peptic ulcers, auto-immune, diseases, stress, gynaecological, disorders, asthma,

low thyroid, function, neuritits, male tonic, menopausal, problems, ec%ema, scrofula,

Many people have been able to correct high blood pressure, with consistent use of the

herb. /esearch from the 1.. *ational &nstitute on )geing, showed that high blood

pressure can lead to atrophy and shrinkage of the brain. The study also showed, that?

years of high blood pressure raises the amount of a li"uid, known as cerebrospinal fluid,

inside the skull, and lowers the amount of white matter. +ho wants less white matterJ

Gotu kolaEs constituents have a strong blood purifying action, and help to lower serumcholesterol levels this could be mainly due to the action of eta-sitosterol. The plant

saponins help the function of the immune system, by assisting in breaking down the

walls of diseased cells, making microbes easier to kill. &t seems likely, that it is this

same action that has been seen in research, which works to kill the leprosy bacteria by

dissolving the wa!y, protective substance around the bacteria.

6ver twenty years ago, my herbal mentor shared with me the benefits of gotu kola to

relieve arthritis. )s & did not suffer with arthritis, myself, & could not speak from

e!perience of the benefits. 2owever, & did share this information, when & was asked to

speak to groups, in lectures, and for people who came to learn at the farm and in herb

courses. 6ver the years, & have had outstanding feedback from people who tried it and

e!perienced relief from pain. They also shared this information with friends, and people

in pain whom they met. There was always a steady stream of people visiting the herb

farm, ... for the plant that could relieve arthritis and gotu kola became the most called

for herb. 7octors recommended it to their patients. Aeople ordered it be posted to their

aged parents. #riends told friends, who had fingers crippled with arthritis.

)rthritis has been recognised as the single, largest and identified cause of disability and

handicap in )ustralia, now affecting over 8.; million people. &t is an inflammatory

condition of the $oints <which can be of the fingers, wrists, elbows, shoulders, hips,

knees, spine and toes= with symptoms of pain, swelling, stiffness and deformity. &t may

appear suddenly or come on gradually, with a toothache-like pain or sharp burning or

grinding pain. There are many different forms arthritis can take. 6steoarthritis, a

degenerative $oint disease is related to the wear and tear of ageing, and involves the

deterioration of the cartilage, at the end of the bones. The once-smooth cartilage

becomes rough, resulting in friction tendons, ligaments and muscles, holding the $oints

together, become weaker, and there is severe pain, stiffness and deformity.

/heumatoid arthritis, an auto-immune disease, is inflammation affecting the synovial

membranes. 0artilage and tissue, surrounding the lubricating fluid in the $oints, can be

destroyed. The body replaces this damaged tissue with scar tissue, causing the spaces

between the $oints to become narrow, to develop folds and to fuse together. There is

stiffness, swelling, anemia, weight loss, and often crippling pain, with loss of mobility

to carry out normal activity, which means the "uality of life becomes greatly reduced.

Gout can be classed as another form of arthritis, which attacks the smaller $oints of the

feet and hands, depositing crystallised uric acid salts in the $oints causing swelling,

redness, a sensation of heat and e!treme pain. Aeople, who wished to be free of these painful, debilitating diseases, have taken the herb. )fter a period of weeks to months,

they usually e!perience a lessening of pain and disability? some report a complete cure.

Many years ago, & was teaching a herb course at the T)#@ 0ollege. &n the first week, &

took into class a bo! of gotu kola plants, to ask if there might be someone in the group

suffering with arthritis, who would like to use it daily, and report back their e!periences

at the end of the ; weeks. &mmediately, a lady indicated she would like to trial the herb.

)t the end of the course, she e!citedly shared with everyone in the class, that she did

not feel fatigue like she used to at the end of the day. This was despite a heavy schedule,

with a busy and demanding business, and that she felt more rela!ed and the arthritic

pain was gone. #or years, she had not been able to take the rings off her fingers because

Page 10: Gota Kola

8/16/2019 Gota Kola

of swollen $oints, but after taking gotu kola for several weeks, was able to remove her

rings again.

) retired gentleman heard about gotu kola, from his wife who came to do the herb

course. 2e was sceptical, but decided to try it, anyway. To his ama%ement, after 35 days,

his swollen, arthritic hands felt a loosening and ease of pain. 2e called around soonafter, to share this with me? lifting his arm above his head, and waving it around with

ease, something, he said, he had not been able to do for a long time.

/ecently, a lass called for gotu kola, which she wanted to give to a friend of 88 years of

age, who had severe arthritis. he knows it is effective, as previously when she was

nursing, she met a lady of 358 years who ate it daily. &f this centenarian did not eat the

leaves regularly, she would have arthritic pain back again.

Many people have shared with me, how they have been relieved of arthritis by chewing

a couple of leaves of gotu kola, daily. ome people e!perience benefits within several

weeks. #or others, consistent use for B to 38 months has given results, and for a few people they found they needed to build up to 9 - ; or more leaves, before they felt a

lessening in symptoms. *ote, that a two-leaf-daily dose, refers to leaves the si%e of a

fifty-cent piece, so if the leaves are smaller, more leaves need to be taken to give the

same amount.

Knowledge is powerful, particularly when it comes to knowing what gotu kola may

achieve. ) man heard me on )0 radio, D2erb of the +eekE program. 2e was most

interested, as he had suffered with very swollen, painful wrists, for a long time, and all

drugs prescribed, gave no improvement. 2e found some gotu kola, used it, and four

weeks later, his wrists were normal in si%e and free of pain. ) lady, in Fictoria, ordered

some plants to be sent by post, as she was desperate to get some relief, from the

rheumatoid arthritis that had crippled her for 89 years. he described the pain she was in

as? DhellE. he also suffered high blood pressure. )fter 8 weeks of using the leaves,

nearly all pain was gone, her blood pressure had normalised and she could sleep almost

the whole night, through.

)nother lady rang, desiring relief from her arthritic condition, which had virtually made

her wheelchair bound. 2er hands were deformed like claws she could not write.

Massive doses of cortisone had done little to relieve the intense pain, nor had any other

treatment she had tried. he started to cut up the leaves, that & posted to her, with a

parsley chopper and had a good pinch of dried, chopped leaves on her muesli, eachmorning. +ithin a short period of time, she was free of pain and back riding her horses,

and, as long as she takes the herb daily, she has no pain. &f she runs out of leaves and

goes without, even for a few days, the pain returns. ) security guard suffered with

severe arthritis, and in the mornings, could hardly move. 2e started eating 8 leaves a

day and, after a short period of time, he was entirely free of pain. )nother person, after

8 weeks on the herb, found total relief from pain. 2e shared his findings with a friend,

who could hardly lift a cup of tea. The friend e!perienced relief in B months and was

able to lead an active life again. ) man, who had prostate cancer, was told about gotu
