Now is the last chance to stop those ugly sum-mer weeds. Crabgrass, f o x t a i l , g o o s e g -rass, barn-
yard grass and all the other ugly
annual summer weed grasses lie dormant in the soil waiting to sprout
and ruin your well tended Kansas City lawn.Nasty weed grass invasions take place every year when lawn soil temperatures above 50°. These alien seeds will sprout sooner in bare spots that are open to the sun. Usually in open areas on the west and south. The warm cracks around driveway, patio and sidewalk will be crabgrass heaven. Depending on the year, germination usually takes place during mid-April.Best control for these ugly summer weed grasses is the two applications of PREVENT! plus fertilizer, once now and again in eight weeks. The PREVENT! formula gives 98% control of crabgrass, foxtail, goosegrass, barnyard grass and all other summer annual weed grasses. Your “Idiot Proof” summer lawn care pro-gram begins now the PREVENT! formula.

Have you walked around your yard this spring and noticed any bare or unattractive areas in your beds or gardens? Here are just a few of our most popular Idiot Proof Plants that can bring color spring, summer and fall.
Fothergilla: Mt. Airy is a dwarf fothergilla growing 2’ to 3’ tall and about the same spread. They prefer full sun to part shade but will fl ower the best in full sun. Bottlebrush like spiked fl owers bloom in spring (April-May) before leaves appear. Oblong green leaves have a toothed edge at the point and turn brilliant shades of yellow, orange and red in the fall.
Itea: Little Henry’s Sweetspire is a dwarf Virginia Sweetspire. Extremely hardy for Kansas City and growing 2’-3’ tall and near the same spread. Best grown in full sun to part shade; Sweetspire can tolerate some wet soil conditions. Fragrant spires of tiny white fl owers cover the shrub blooming in late spring to early summer. Oval green leaves turn
shades of orange, red and purple in the fall, can be shaped and trimmed for foundations or borders.
Clethra: Ruby Spice clethra is a deciduous shrub growing best in full sun to part shade, but can tolerate heavy shade and wet soils. Growing 4’-6’ high and 3’-5’ spread. Fragrant rose-pink bottle-brush like fl owers bloom from July to August and perfect for

In the age of instant gratifi cation, turf grass sod provides the “instant lawn.” Sod is to grass seed what pop tarts are to breakfast. Homeown-ers who want to have in-stant green grass by to-morrow should consider sod instead of grass seed.
On established homes, sod is an excellent choice for certain prob-lem areas. Small patch-es around the driveway or patio that have been damaged over the win-ter months are easily repaired by sod. Gut-ter downspouts or on slopes where seed will be washed away, sod is the problem solver. Dog runs, play grounds, tire tracks, gasoline or fertil-izer burns, all are com-
mon problems for which sod is the answer.
Prepare the soil to be smooth and level, apply Loveland Golf Course Starter and gypsum to the bare soil. Sod may then be installed in stag-gered rows.
Watering the sod in-stallation is the most im-portant step in any suc-cessful sod job. Fresh sod must be watered at once and kept wet for two to three weeks. Ho-meowners should plan to water sod at least twice a day for one hour at a setting. Sod should be sloppy wet after in-stallation.
In warm weather, sod begins to heat up in the roll as soon as it is cut. The better the sod, the sooner it begins to heat up. Sod that cannot be installed promptly should be unrolled in the shade and watered until the project is ready to start.
