    Install the SIM or USIM card andbatteryWhen you subscribe to a cellular service, you will receive

    a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card, with subscriptiondetails, such as your personal identication number (PIN)and optional services. To use UMTS services, you canpurchase a Universal Subscriber Identity Module (USIM)card.

    Insert the SIM or USIM card.3

    Place the SIM or USIM card into the device with

    the gold-coloured contacts acing down.I you do not insert a SIM or USIM card, you canonly use your devices non-network services andsome menus.

    To install the SIM or USIM card and battery,

    I the device is on, press and hold [1 ] and selectPower ofto turn it of.

    Remove the back cover.2

    Charge the batteryBeore using the device or the rst time, you must chargethe battery.

    You can charge the device with the provided travel adapteror by connecting the device to a PC with a PC data cable.

    Use only Samsung-approved chargers and cables.Unauthorised chargers or cables can cause batteriesto explode or damage your device.

    When your battery is low, the device will emit awarning tone and display a low battery message. The battery icon will also be empty and turn red.

    I the battery level becomes too low, the device willautomatically power of. Recharge your battery tocontinue using your device.

    Plug the large end o the travel adapter into a power3outlet.

    You can use the device while it is charging, but itmay take longer to ully charge the battery.

    While the device is charging, the touch screen maynot unction due to an unstable power supply. Ithis happens, unplug the travel adapter rom thedevice.

    While charging, the device may heat up. Thisis normal and should not afect your devicesliespan or perormance.

    I your device is not charging properly, bring yourdevice and the charger to a Samsung ServiceCentre.

    Charge with the travel adapter

    Open the cover to the multiunction jack on the top o1the device.

    Plug the small end o the travel adapter into the2multiunction jack.

    Improperly connecting the travel adapter can cause

    serious damage to the device. Any damage causedby misuse is not covered by the warranty.

    Plug one end (micro-USB) o the PC data cable into the2multiunction jack.

    Plug the other end o the PC data cable into a USB port3on a PC.

    Depending on the type o PC data cable you areusing, it may take some time beore chargingbegins.

    When the battery is ully charged (the battery icon is4no longer moving), unplug the PC data cable rom the

    device and then rom the PC.

    Insert a memory cardTo store additional multimedia les, you must inserta memory card. Your device accepts microSD ormicroSDHC memory cards with maximum capacitieso 32 GB (depending on memory card manuacturer andtype).

    When the battery is ully charged (the battery icon is4no longer moving), unplug the travel adapter rom thedevice and then rom the power outlet.

    Do not remove the battery beore removing thetravel adapter. Doing this may cause damage to thedevice.

    To save energy, unplug the travel adapter when notin use. The travel adapter does not have a powerswitch, so you must unplug the travel adapter romthe outlet to interrupt the power supply. The travel

    adapter should remain close to the socket whenin use.

    Charge with the PC data cableBeore charging, ensure that your PC is turned on.

    Open the cover to the multiunction jack on the top o1the device.

    Open the cover to the memory card slot on the side o1the device.

    Insert a memory card with the gold-coloured contacts2acing down.

    Push the memory card in the memory card slot until it3locks in place.

    Close the cover to the memory card slot.4

    Samsung uses approved industry standards ormemory cards, but some brands may not be ullycompatible with your device. Using an incompatiblememory card may damage your device or thememory card and can corrupt data stored on thecard.

    Your device supports only the FAT le structure ormemory cards. I you insert a card ormatted witha diferent le structure, your device will ask you toreormat the memory card.

    Frequent writing and erasing o data will shortenthe liespan o memory cards.

    When you insert a memory card in your device,the le directory o the memory card will appearin the sdcard older.

    Format the memory cardFormatting your memory card on a PC may causeincompatibilities with your device. Format the memorycard only on the device.

    In Idle mode, select SettingsSD card and phonestorageUnmount SD cardOKFormat SD cardFormat SD card.

    Beore ormatting the memory card, remember tomake backup copies o all important data stored onyour device. The manuacturers warranty does notcover loss o data resulting rom user actions.

    Remove the memory cardBeore removing a memory card, rst unmount it or saeremoval.

    In Idle mode, select1 SettingsSD card andphone storageUnmount SD cardOK.

    Open the cover to the memory card slot on the side o2the device.

    Push the memory card gently until it disengages rom3the device.

    Pull the memory card out o the memory card slot.4

    Close the cover to the memory card slot.5Do not remove a memory card while the device istranserring or accessing inormation, as this could

    result in loss o data or damage to the memory cardor device.

    Turn your device on and oTo turn on your device,

    Press and hold [1 ].

    I you turn on your device or the rst time, ollow the2on-screen instructions to set up your device.

    To turn of your device, press and hold [ ] and selectPower of.

    Follow all posted warnings and directions romocial personnel when in areas where the use owireless devices is restricted, such as aeroplanesand hospitals.

    To use your device's non-network services only,switch to Airplane mode. Press and hold [ ] andselect Airplane mode.

    Control your touch screen with the ollowing actions:

    Tap: Touch once with your nger to select or launch amenu, option, or application.

    Tap and hold: Tap an item and hold it or more than 2seconds to open a pop-up option list.

    Drag: Tap and drag your nger up, down, let, or right tomove to items on lists.

    Drag and drop: Tap and hold your nger on an item, andthen drag your nger to move the item.

    Double-tap: Tap twice quickly with your nger to zoomin or out while viewing photos or web pages.

    Your device turns of the touch screen when youdo not use the device or a specied period.

    You can adjust the backlight time. In Idle mode,open the application list and select Settings

    DisplayScreen timeout.

    To avoid scratching the touch screen, do not usesharp tools.

    Do not allow the touch screen to come intocontact with other electrical devices. Electrostaticdischarges can cause the touch screen tomalunction.

    Do not allow the touch screen to come intocontact with water. The touch screen maymalunction in humid conditions or whenexposed to water.

    For optimal use o the touch screen, remove thescreen protection lm beore using your device.

    Your touch screen has a layer that detects smallelectrical charges emitted by the human body.For best perormance, tap the touch screen withyour ngertip. The touch screen will not react totouches o sharp tools, such as a stylus or pen.

    Add items to the idle screenYou can customise the idle screen by adding shortcuts toapplications or items in applications, widgets, or olders. Toadd items to the idle screen,

    Press [1 ]Addor tap and hold the empty area onthe idle screen.

    Select the item category2 an item:Widgets : Add widgets. Widgets are small

    applications that provide convenient unctions andinormation on your idle screen.

    Shortcuts : Add shortcuts to items, such asapplications, bookmarks, and contacts.

    Folders : Create a new older or add olders or yourcontacts.

    Wallpapers : Set a background image.

    Available items may vary depending on the currentidle screen mode.

    Lock or unlock the touch screenand keysYou can lock the touch screen and keys to prevent anyunwanted device operations.

    To lock, press [ ]. To unlock, turn on the screen and dragright until it reaches the dot.

    Get to know the idle screenWhen the device is in Idle mode, you will see the idlescreen. From the idle screen, you can view your devicesstatus and access applications.

    The idle screen has multiple panels. Scroll let or right to apanel o the idle screen.

    Use the shortcuts panelIn Idle mode or while using an application, tap theindicator icons area and drag your nger down to openthe shortcuts panel. You can activate or deactivate wirelessconnection eatures and access a list o notications, suchas messages, calls, events or processing status. To hide thelist, drag the bottom o the list up.

    From the shortcuts panel, you can use the ollowingoptions:

    Wi-Fi : Activate or deactivate the WLAN connectioneature. p. 83

    Bluetooth : Activate or deactivate the Bluetooth wireless

    connection eature. p. 81GPS : Activate or deactivate the GPS eature.

    Silent : Activate or deactivate Silent mode.

    Auto rotation : Activate or deactivate the auto rotation.

    Available options may vary depending on yourregion or service provider.

    Move items on the idle screen

    Tap and hold an item to move until the item appears1gray.

    Drag the item to the location you want.2

    Remove items rom the idle screen

    Tap and hold an item to remove.1The trash bin appears at the bottom o the idle screen.

    Drag the item to the trash bin.2

    Access applicationsTo access your devices applications,

    In Idle mode, select1 to access the application list.

    Scroll let or right to another application screen.2

    Select an application.3When you use applications provided by Google,you must have a Google account. I you do nothave a Google account, sign up or a Googleaccount.

    You can add a shortcut to an application bytapping and holding the application icon romthe application list. You can move the icon to thelocation you want on the idle screen.

    Add or remove panels to the idle screenYou can add or remove panels o the idle screen toorganise widgets according to your preerences and needs.

    In Idle mode, press [1 ]Edit.You can also place your two ngers on the screen andpinch to switch to Edit mode.

    Add or remove panels by using the ollowing eatures:2To remove a panel, tap and hold the thumbnail o apanel and drag it to the trash bin at the bottom othe screen.

    To add a new panel, select .

    To change the order o the panels, tap and hold thethumbnail o a panel and drag it to the location youwant.

    When you are nished, press [3 ].

    Drag the application icon to the location you want.3You can move an application icon to another mainmenu screen.

    Press [4 ]Save.To change the order o the main menu screens,

    Access recent applications

    Press and hold the Home key to open the list o1applications you have accessed recently.

    Select an application to access.2

    Press [4 ] to return to the previous screen; Press theHome key to return to the idle screen.

    Your device has a built-in motion sensor that detectsits orientation. I you rotate the device while usingsome eatures, the interace will automaticallyswitch to landscape view. To set the interace tokeep the orientation when you rotate the device,select SettingsDisplayAuto-rotate screen.

    Organise applicationsYou can reorganise the applications in the application listby changing their order or grouping them into categoriesto suit your preerences and needs.

    In the application list, press [1 ]Edit.

    Set the current time and date

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select1SettingsDate and time.

    Set the time and date and change other options.2

    Turn on or o the touch toneIn Idle mode, open the application list and select SettingsSoundAudible selection.

    Adjust the volume o the ringtonesPress the Volume key up or down to adjust the ringtonevolume.

    Use the task managerYour device is a multitasking device. It can run more thanone application at the same time. However, multitaskingmay cause hang-ups, reezing, memory problems, oradditional power consumption. To avoid these problems,end unnecessary programs using the task manager.

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select1 TaskmanagerActive applications.

    The list o all the applications currently running onyour device appears.

    To close an application, select2 End.

    To close all active applications, selectEndall.

    Select a wallpaper or the idle screen

    In Idle mode, press [1 ]Wallpaper an option.

    Select an image.2

    Select3 Save or Setwallpaper.Samsung is not responsible or any use o deaultimages or wallpapers provided on your device.

    Adjust the brightness o the display

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select1SettingsDisplayBrightness.

    Drag the slider2 to adjust the level o brightness.

    Select3 OK.

    The brightness level o the display will afect howquickly the device consumes battery power.

    Switch to Silent modeTo mute or unmute your device, do one o the ollowings:

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select Keypad and tap and hold .

    Open the shortcuts panel rom the top o the screen andselect Silent.

    Press and hold [ ] and select Silent mode.

    Change your ringtone

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select1SettingsSoundPhone ringtone.

    Select a ringtone rom the list and select2 OK.

    Activate animation or switchingwindows

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select SettingsDisplayAnimationSome animations or Allanimations.

    See the on-screen instructions and example patterns2and select Next (i necessary).

    Draw a pattern by dragging your nger to connect at3least 4 dots.

    Select4 Continue.

    Draw a pattern again to conrm.5

    Select6 Conrm.

    Set an unlock PIN codeIn Idle mode, open the application list and select1SettingsLocation and securitySet screen lockPIN.

    Enter a new PIN (numeric) and select2 Continue.

    Enter the PIN again and select3 OK.

    Set a screen lockYou can lock the touch screen with an unlock pattern orpassword to prevent unauthorised people rom using thedevice without your permission.

    Once you set a screen lock, your device will requirean unlock code each time you turn it on or unlockthe touch screen.

    I you orget your PIN or password, bring yourdevice to a Samsung Service Centre to reset it.

    Samsung is not responsible or any loss o security codes or private inormation or other damagescaused by illegal sotware.

    Set an unlock pattern

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select1SettingsLocation and securitySet screen lockPattern.

    Once the PIN lock is enabled, you must enter the PIN eachtime you turn on the device.

    I you enter an incorrect PIN too many times, yourSIM or USIM card will be blocked. You must entera PIN unlock key (PUK) to unblock the SIM or USIMcard.

    I you block your SIM or USIM card by enteringan incorrect PUK, bring the card to your serviceprovider to unblock it.

    Enter text

    You can enter text by selecting characters on the virtualkeypad or by inputting handwriting on the screen.

    You cannot enter text in some languages. To entertext, you should change the writing language to oneo the supported languages. p. 102

    Set an unlock password

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select1SettingsLocation and securitySet screen lockPassword.

    Enter a new password (alphanumeric) and select2Continue.

    Enter the password again and select3 OK.

    Lock your SIM or USIM cardYou can lock your device by activating the PIN suppliedwith your SIM or USIM card.

    In Idle mode, open the application list and select1SettingsLocation and securitySet up SIM cardlockLock SIM card.

    Enter your PIN and select2 OK.

    Continue until you have nished the word.3

    Release the nger on the last character. The word is4inserted into the text input eld.

    Repeat steps 1-4 to complete your text.5Tap and hold each key to enter additional characters.

    Change the keyboard typeYou can change the keyboard type. Tap and hold the textinput eld and select Input method a keyboard type(Swype or Samsung keypad).

    Enter text using the Swype keyboard

    Select the rst character o a word and drag your nger1to the second character without releasing the ngerrom the screen.

    Pause on the second character or a moment and drag2the nger to the next character.

    You can select one o key input methods (QWERTY ortraditional keypad) or handwriting input methods.
