Editorial | Senior Pastor

As summer quickly gives way to fall and I pause to reflect on the places I’ve ex-perienced these past months, I am struck by the contrast between two different scenes. One is of a swiftly moving mountain stream. The water is clear, cool and inviting. The bank I stand on is alive with green grass and foliage. The air smells fresh and crisp. The other scene is of a water hazard on a golf course.

Without any channel allowing the water to run, it sits and stagnates. The result-ing slew is covered with thick algae that gives the air a dank aroma and keeps any would-be golf ball hunters at bay. The first scene is alive and attractive. The second is almost desolate and certainly repelling.

There is only one key reason why these two bodies of water are so different. The first shares the water it receives. The second holds on and becomes only a reservoir. I believe there is a powerful metaphor for us in these two scenes. We were de-signed by God to function as a river, receiving God’s blessings and growing deeper in them, but not hoarding them or keeping them to ourselves. We were never intended to be merely reservoirs of God’s work in our lives. This is the key truth behind our 2013-14 ministry year theme, “For the Sake of the World.”

In Acts 1:8, our theme verse, we are told that as followers of Christ we will receive the power of the Holy Spirit in such a way that we will become witnesses. To be a witness is to truly experience the life of Christ as a result of all the transformation the Holy Spirit brings. But as witnesses, we are then to share what we’ve experi-enced “in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” God changes us not for our own sake, but truly for the sake of the world among and beyond us. What we receive from God we are called to share by our lifestyle, our intentional care for those around us and, as God gives opportunity, by our stories and explanations of God’s love through Christ.

As a church collectively, we are given this same challenge. Through this year we will share in the excitement of seeing our facilities renewed and we will work together through the challenges of being offsite as this happens. But let us not forget that

the end product is not just for us. Yes, it is to be a place where life transformation happens, but always for the sake of the world.

From day one, we need to keep before us the need to serve our community and our world through the blessing of these renewed facilities.

So as we enter this year, let us ask God together to renew our heart’s passion for the people around us. Let us each pray that God will open our eyes to the world around us and ask Him to show us in increasingly practical ways what

it means for us to walk more deeply with Jesus for the sake of the world!

and family. Showing this part of our lives to our children was really special for us. It was great to ground them in a sense of our history, and of God’s faithfulness in our story, and our prayer was that it would show them again that we’re investing in their stories as followers of Christ too.

The adventure also impacted us in really powerful ways as we dwelt in new parts of God’s creation we had never seen before. Some favourite spots for us were Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park, Colorado Springs, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and Yellowstone Nation-al Park. I realized again how God’s creation renews me, and provides me perspective that I need. There’s something incredibly right-sizing about standing in a massive red rock arch that is 10 stories above, sur-rounding you, or peering out atop a massive canyon at the vastness of the silence below, or the powerful beauty of a enormous waterfall, all of which makes you feel small – and small in a good way. I think adventure makes God seem far greater and vaster, and my issues and frustrations came into

I can’t help myself. We stored up a treasure trove of memories from our sabbatical adventures this summer that were so special, I just want to stay there a little longer. So, I thought I’d share a few with you.

Most of you know that March 1st began our sabbatical, and though it began with recovery for Terry from emergency spleen surgery and a long hospital stay, it finished off with some really wonderful times for us as a family. When June 27 rolled on to the calendar we took our 3 kids (16, 14 and 10) and headed out for 5 weeks. We called it our American Adventure.

Adventure is such a great word isn’t it? It carries with it a lot of positive connotations…something delightful and excit-ing ahead, exploration, a journey, or even a quest. And I’d say that in nearing 8 years of ministry here at McKernan, our hearts were ready for that sense of discovery and renewal that God might have for us on sabbatical; our trip was a per-fect example of that.

Over our 5 weeks away we travelled through North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Wyo-ming and Montana. We put about 9700 km on our van, and we all still loved each other at the finish of the trip! We saw a lot of our extended family, many of our old friends, mentors and former colleagues from our time living in the US, and we felt very blessed and encouraged by that. Ad-venturing is always more fun and meaningful with friends

perspective. I discovered again that there’s so much more about God I have yet to learn and need to be reminded of. I really needed the balm of that part of our adventure.

We feel incredibly blessed by how you as a church invest in us as Pastors by supporting Sabbaticals. The time was so valuable to us in so many tangible and intangible ways. During these times I believe God has a unique opportunity to “un-do” us and start the process of “re-doing” us again. I’m challenged to take some of those adventure lessons from sabbatical and weave them into my life each day. And that’s what I’d challenge you with too. Do you see your life as an Adventure from God? If not, what

new adventure might He be setting you on? How are you investing in the kind of relationships that ground you – but also ones with people who want to adventure with you? And finally, where in your life are you confronted with God’s vastness, His might and His power in creation? You don’t have to travel 9700 km to see it. But it might mean some time committed to being one who purposely sees.

So there you have our Adventures in Sabbatical in a nutshell. We’d love to chat more about them with you. After all we have 3000 pictures to prove it!

Hi, we are Trevor and Joy Frost. We wanted to give you a little background on who we are and why we are here. For those of you who don’t know us well…Trevor is the older, and maybe a little wiser, brother to Kelly Smit. Trevor and I just celebrated our 12th anniversary this summer! It’s crazy how time flies and how looking back, we can see God’s fingerprints everywhere in our lives. We started attending McKernan on a regular basis after moving back to Edmonton from Saskatchewan, where we spent our college years. We lived in the University area, which made McKernan Baptist Church an easy choice, but it didn’t take us long to feel at home here and feel that this would be where we would want to plant our roots, even after moving outside of the city near Beaumont 7 years ago. Trevor has been facilitating the men’s Bible study here at McKernan the last few years, and this coming fall I have agreed to take on the

role as facilitator for the women’s evening Bible study. It’s funny how sometimes those around you see your strengths, even before you realize them in yourself. It has been through the guidance and motivation of Pastor Dan and Pastor Sharon that we have felt like this is the place where God would have us serve our church at this time in our lives. I love what Pastor Lyle had to say during a sermon in the spring….”God has designed us with unique personalities and passions and has given us spiritual gifts so that we can serve Him in a way that fits who He has made us to be.”We are currently in the process of international adoption and through this have learned, and are still being challenged, to trust in the Lord and believe that in all things His timing is perfect. We know that God does not make mistakes and we are here for a reason, open to His calling and trusting in His guidance each day. We are happy and feel privileged to be able to serve our church in this way.

For 7 months this year, I had the privilege of being able to be on staff at McKernan as the Interim Student Ministries Director. It was an incred-ible learning experience for me, and I so appreciated every part of it. When people ask me about my experience, I often start by telling them how incredibly supportive McKernan is and that I can’t imagine a better place for me to gain some ministry experience. From the mo-ment I stepped into the position all the staff at the office were incredibly supportive, the parents of the youth always had my back, the youth were awesome, and the youth ministry team was amazing. I couldn’t have asked for a better opportunity to jump in to. So I want to start this article by saying a heartfelt thank you to everyone who supported me and made this an amazing learning experience. And that is truly what it was for me: a learning experience. This was my first adventure into full-time min-istry, and even though I have been serving with the youth group here for 7 years, there were still a lot of lessons on this journey. I learned that you can’t rent a 15 passenger van until you’re 25 and no mat-

ter how hard you try to convince them, even if it’s only a few months till you’re 25, they won’t let you. I also learned that they should have a “how-to-cook-supper-for-big-groups” class in seminary. And I also learned that what happens at staff meetings stays at staff meetings , and that even pastors can have a sense of humour.Along with those lessons, I learned that even though I have many skills and abilities and can work as hard as I can, it won’t matter unless God is the one behind it and it is His strength driving the work. I also learned that ministry isn’t about one person, but about a team of people working together to further the Kingdom. And I learned that God is good, He is faithful, and He is still at work even today. I am so thankful for my experience as Interim Student Ministries Direc-tor here at McKernan. I am thank-ful for everything I’ve learned, and for all the people who supported me. And most of all, I am excited to see what God has in store next for me, and for the Youth Ministries at McKernan.

“Quick! Come quickly! There’s a mob, and they’re out to get me. It’s not safe here, we must hide. Maybe if we hide here for a while they will leave. Shhhhh.”That was me and other leaders from McKernan and Central Baptist at this summer’s Vacation Bible School (VBS). No, we weren’t hiding from the children because they had worn us out and we wanted a break, we were hiding with the children in a small dark stairwell learn-ing that “God loves us when others don’t”.Most of you at church would know me as Andrew, a pretty normal guy, but for one week this summer, I filled the sandals of a spiritual giant. I was Paul of Tarsus, a simple tent maker, a descendant of Abraham. I had been in prison frequently, received forty lashes minus one five times, was beaten with rods and more. That week the other leaders and I, and around 120 children were in Athens. Just like the real Paul of Tarsus I was one piece of a larger team who came to love children. Why children? I could tell you about when Jesus rebukes his disciples and says “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” but we’ve all heard that before (Matthew 19:14, Mark 10:14, Luke 18:16). Yet it’s important to note that Jesus goes on to say that “anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” Why does Jesus say this? Children are trusting, open and believe with a sincerity that is difficult to match. Children themselves are so important to God, but they are also an incredible op-portunity to impact an entire family, whether believers or not, for Christ. Just like Paul, I was volunteered by someone else to go on this missionary journey. Paul was volunteered by Jesus and I was volunteered by my wife. Now don’t get me wrong. I wanted to help out with VBS but acting...drama...role play, not my forte. I threw myself into it because there were no other guys volunteering to play the part, in fact there were very few guys helping at all...we will get to that later (now guys this doesn’t mean you should stop reading). It was a stretching and very rewarding experience.

The kids at VBS tasted the food in Athens, they played Olympic style games, they made Greek musical instru-ments and other crafts, they listened to stories of Ken and Jerilyn Bayer from Chain of Love in Brazil and they met with Paul each day. With Paul they learned that God loves us all, God loves us and takes care of us, God loves us when others don’t, God loves us and sent his son Jesus, and finally God wants us to share His love. We hid from mobs, were imprisoned then freed, and we learned that Paul had a past. Now this was a past that Paul could have been ashamed of, but he used it to show the healing power of Christ’s death to rid us of the sickness that is sin. Everyone show me your sick face. Now men, you are role models in your home, and that is so important but I urge you to consider getting involved in Children’s Ministry this year whether that be VBS next summer or Sunday School on Sundays. There are many ways to be involved and Kelly Smit, McKer-nan’s Children’s Ministry Director would be happy to find you a role. Email [email protected]. Many families are without strong godly male role models and children need this in their lives. This takes nothing away from all the hardworking and godly women who did so much to make this VBS a success. We all have a calling to help in the ministry to the lost and to build up those who are already saved, not because God needs us but because He wants us. This takes so much pressure off because it is not of our-selves, but as Paul says “I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Cor 12:9b) This week was for Him and because of Him, or my middle name isn’t Paul. Well, actually it is.Thank you for letting me share my heart.

Construction Update| Contingency

We have been blessed with beautiful weather for the initial demolition of the East Wing and excavation for the new addition. Excavation for the addition should wrap up this week with work beginning on the foundation piles and formwork following that, which we anticipate being complete sometime in early November. Site services, which include the water, storm sewer and sanitary sewer should be completed in the next two weeks. Please continue to pray for the various design and construction teams involved as we navigate through the construc-tion process. For example, we’ve discovered that the existing weeping tile around the sanctu-ary has disintegrated and requires replacement. On the positive side though, this gives us the opportunity to enhance the old basement foundation walls by adding insulation and a water proofing membrane!

As a former elementary teacher, September has always been my favorite time of the

year. The anticipation of learning to come, clean school supplies just begging to be

used, and the opportunity to meet many new children and families are a few of my

favorite things! In my new role as the Interim Children’s Ministry Director here at McK-

ernan, the same excitement is building as the hallway will now be alive with activity.

There are many individuals required to successfully provide programming to our chil-

dren from nursery through grade six. Below, you will find photos and brief biographies

of the interns, teachers and Parent Leadership Team members who will be working

together to deliver a strong Children’s Ministry program this year. Your prayers for all of

us would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to come and see what we do each week – we

are located just down the east hallway of the school.

I grew up in La Crete and moved to Edmonton to get my degree in nursing. I am now entering my final year of school and have been married for one year. I have really enjoyed working with children in the hospital setting as well as around the community and have always wanted to do something with my life that involved children. I have attended McKernan for 3 years, and when this nursery internship became available, I was excited to spend more time with all the little children that come to the nursery, to become more involved with the church, and get to know the families on a deeper level. I believe God gave me this opportunity to grow deeper in Him and has given me a chance to give back to the community. I am really looking forward to it!

Cecilia WolfeNursery Intern (0-24 months)

My name is Emily Okken! I am in grade 12 at Harry Ainlay, and hope to pursue Elementary Education as a career. I have been attending McKernan for 15 years and this will be my 6th year working with this age group. What I enjoy most about being involved in Children’s Ministry is getting to spend time with the kids, and seeing them grow and develop over the time that they are in Sunday School and watch their love for God develop. It’s so fun to hear stories about how the Sunday School lesson comes home to you as parents through your children. I am really looking forward to getting to spend time with these kids and getting to know you as families!

Hi! I’m Jenna, and I grew up in Ladner B.C. just outside of Vancouver. I then moved to Edmonton to pursue my teaching career. I am graduating in No-vember 2013 with a BEd and a Fine Arts Minor. I started going to McKernan in the fall of 2010 because some of my friends had been attending. I then met my husband in the fall of 2010 as well, and we were married July 2012.I love to work with children of every age. I have worked at a Bible Summer Camp for 5 years as a Camp Counsellor and then as the Leadership Training Director, training the future staffers of the Camp in Counselling. Camp was where I originally discovered the Lord’s calling for children’s ministries. I am thrilled to start my new position as the Elementary School Intern. I can’t wait to meet all of the children and their families!

Jenna Johannesson Elementary Intern (Kindergarten – Grade 4)

Hi! My name is Alanna Toews. I have been attending McKernan Baptist Church for 12 years. My husband Trevor and I have an 8 year old daughter Sarah, and 6 year old son Jacob. As a teacher and parent, my passion is vol-unteering in Children’s Ministry, and learning about God together!

My name is Sonya Kujat Choy. Peter and I have attended McKernan Baptist Church for about 7 years and we have two children - Clarissa (8) and Cam-eron (5). I am excited to be teaching the grades 3 and 4 class this year. I look forward to spending time with the kids each week and having conversa-tions about their lives and about Jesus Christ. It is a great privilege, because I feel that we as Sunday School teachers are making an investment in the kids for earth and for eternity.

Andrew and I have been attending McKernan for about seven years. We met at a college and career event while we were both students at the University of Alberta (Andrew in Civil Engineering and Krysta in Elementary Education). During university, I served as an Intern in Children’s Ministry for two years and Andrew helped teach Sunday School with me. Now we have two children of our own (Claire, 3 and Micah, 1). We are excited to continue our involvement in Children’s Ministry because children are so eager and open to learning about God. We also believe that helping to develop faith in children opens the door to developing faith in the whole family.

Andrew and Krysta SiggelkowParent Leadership Team Members

My husband Mike and I have been attending McKernan for 13 years. We love the community and friendships we have formed here over the years. Although I work as a Dental Hygienist, I see my role as a mother to our boys as my first priority. We are blessed to have Carter(11) and Drew(9) part of our lives. They are energetic, fun, and passionate kids who generally love life and people. Our kids have grown up here and throughout our years at McKernan we have seen their faith journeys grow incredibly. Their love for God and the church has been shaped in many ways through the Children’s Ministry and friendships formed here, and for that we are so thankful! I am personally excited to be part of this Leadership Team. My prayer is that we can continue to make our Children’s Ministry a place of powerful communi-ty and growth, a place where kids are excited to come, to grow, to connect, to participate and most importantly to learn. My prayer for each child is that they would be able to make their faith their own and grow into the leaders and followers that God has made them to be!

Hi! My name is Arvind Azariah (Azu is what I am often called) and I original-ly came to Edmonton to do my masters at the University of Alberta. I had taught children before for quite a few years and I was looking for an oppor-tunity to serve once again. So when I came to McKernan for the first time and found out that the Grade 5/6 intern position was not filled yet, I had no hesitation about it.

Arvind (Azu) AzariahGrade 5-6 Intern

Our family has been a part of McKernan Baptist for about 11 years. We have three sons, Jonah (13), Parker (10) and Nathanael (8). They keep us busy with their activities, which we love. I have taught elementary education for 5 years (classroom and substitute teaching), and am now excited to expand my experience by working in Children’s Ministry here at McKernan. I love being a part of what the children are passionate about and “getting into their world”. I desire to bring the love of Christ into the Sunday School classroom and to help kids connect His love to their friends and their community.

Six years ago I thought the church was a nice addition to my life as a Christian but not necessary to my per-sonal relationship with God. However, over the last six years I have learned how fundamental Christian com-munity is to having a healthy, effective relationship with God. This change in my heart is what has led me into my current position as a College and Career Intern.Throughout high school, Bible college, and my first years of university, I strongly believed that I could handle life by myself. However, in the second half of my undergraduate degree, stress surrounding work and school coupled with habitual sin resulted in anxi-ety that led to physical health problems, isolation, and hopelessness. For the first time in my life I had reached a level of helplessness that convinced me that I couldn’t face life alone. What I really felt I needed was a church family to sup-port me. However, partly because of me and partly because of the attitude and atmosphere of the church I was attending I didn’t have any truly meaningful relationships there and I had no sense of community or participation. I was very hurt that the church hadn’t included and cared for me in the way I hoped it would. Because of my disappointment and anxiety I avoided going to church. It would have been very easy for me to be offended and bitter and give up on the church, but God chose to re-store my confidence in the power of Christian commu-nity when one of my roommates invited me to be a part of her small group. I was extremely nervous to join the group and very insecure about being wanted there. But, contrary to my expectations, I found true friendships, acceptance and a place to heal in that community. So there I was a year ago, crushed by my previous experience in the church, but un-derstanding how important it is to live in community. I was also planning to move to Edmonton to begin my degree in Speech and Language Pathology which gave me an opportunity to start over. In preparing to move I decided that I was going to find

a church right away and fight my way into community no matter how hard it was because I knew I needed it.I attended McKernan Baptist Church one of my first weeks in Edmonton. I liked what I found and so I deter-mined to come to every event and volunteer for every-thing I could in order to establish a church home. While it did take a lot of effort and courage to get involved, the church made it much easier than I thought it would be. There were so many people in the church who had space in their lives for someone new. I was also invited into the community by being given the privilege of serving the church as a volunteer.Because of my experiences with the church in the past I have developed a passion for helping people get con-nected to the church through relationships. To me, the people I see in church on Sunday are people who are in places I have been: maybe totally broken and desper-ately in need of a community to help them find healing, or spiritually, physically and emotionally well, but need-ing an invitation to join with the community in doing God’s work. My heart is eager to get to know the people at church and help them figure out how the church can meet their needs and what they have to offer the church so they can meet other people’s needs. That is why I am very excited to have a role in the church where my job is to bring people from the outside to the inside and connect them with what the church is doing so they have the opportunity to both receive and give.
