i n t e r n a t i o n a lv i b eWe’re excited to bring you “Cosmopolitan Twin Cities,” a collection of photos and other inspiration featuring an engagement session in downtown Minneapolis and St Paul that takes cues directly from New York; a bridal fashion feature drawing on the rich beauty of Paris; and a wedding inspiration as bold and colorful as Mexico City.

Our challenge was simple in concept, but challenging to execute: Interpret Minneapolis and St. Paul through the lens of iconic world cities, showcasing local vibrancy and energy with the colors, textures, and passions of the world.

By the time you’re done with this edition of Hearten, we think you’ll be fired up by the beauty and international drama that can be found right here in Minnesota, as imagined and executed by some of our most talented artisans and craftspeople. We know that after creating this issue, we certainly were.

Emma Freeman Photography I am drawn to people who celebrate their lives and community in unique and personal ways. My approach is rooted in the use of film, which inspires me to create images that are genuine, subtle and emotional with an emphasis on classic compositions and lovely light. Anne and Matt chose to get married at Spill the Wine in downtown Minneapolis because of the artsy, urban vibe it has. They served heavy hor d’oeuvres instead of a seated, formal dinner which added to the cocktail party style of the whole day. Sadie’s Couture Floral and Event Styling brought in sleek white couches and chairs for a custom lounge area where guests could hang out. An awesome dance party was essential to them and their guests did not disappoint. Overall, they had a modern, urban, personal wedding, which is exactly what they wanted.

Becca Dilley PhotographyAli & Jud’s wedding at Solera was much more about their commitment and love than it was about the 10 course Tapas menu, but the food really made the celebration more tangible! Besides a quick run to Gold Medal Park for photos between the ceremony and reception, I mostly focused on documenting what they had planned - from rooftop ceremony to laughter and dancing. A quick stop in the stairwell made for adramatic portrait as the night wore down.

AMORMinneapolis is as sultry and sexy as Mexico City in this inspiration shoot featuring local artists and purveyors.

LAZOThis extra-long strand of rosary beads (or “Lazo”), was created by local jewelry artist Marisa Martinez of Meztiza Designs, and incorporates hand-carved turquoise, coral beads, and a handwrought sterling silver and bronze cross. A Lazo is often used during a wedding as a symbol of union and protection, being draped around the couple during their ceremony. The Lazo’s bold colors echo and amplify hues found within the couple’s accessories, including the groom’s bright tie and the bride’s vibrant floral headpiece.

This full and textural dress from the Wedding Shoppe in St. Paul was a perfect complement to the high-energy colors and bold motifs used to evoke Mexico City. Keeping the clothing warm-weather friendly, this suit (worn without jacket) was lightweight enough for a stroll around the bustling streets of South Minneapolis.

{this page} Referencing Frida Kahlo’s love for bold jewelry, Metiza Designs made abundant use of silver bangles, rings, and earrings to accent the dress and colorful flowers. In both form and color, the metal jewelry and organic flowers echo one another and have a lively conversation that boldly enriches the celebration.{opposite} The vibrancy of the Mexican culture inspired Brett Dorrian for the theme of this look. Taking style pieces from iconic imagery, the mix of structured tradition was met with a fashionable flair of modern lines, fueled by timeless passion. The makeup was a mixture of warm and cool tones washed in saturated pinks and corals over a bright skin tone, allowing for the palette of the flowers and the lips to create a frame that brought the focus back to the eyes.

The hair flower piece balances traditional Mexican motifs with a contemporary feel, and was inspired by portraits of iconic Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. The piece was created by Distinctly Debbie floral and Brett Dorrian Artistry Studios, and uses both texture and bright colors to attract and focus the attention of onlookers.

Photographer Jennifer Whalen chose urban locations in Minneapolis that suggest parallels to the teeming colors and pronounced textures of Mexico City. This central area of South Minneapolis, near the intersection of Lake Street and Bloomington Avenue, has a vibrant Latino community full of colorful buildings, authentic taquerias and pupuserias, and bold murals that evoke life and culture south of the border.

Invitations created by redshoes26 design use the spiral and pointed shapes of succulent plants as an inspiration. This pattern is similar to motifs found in Mexican blankets, and its strong, clean, simple geometric forms attract the eye and focus attention.

{this page} Using a combination of drought-hardy cacti and succulents as well as bright colorful flowers, Distinctly Debbie’s Flowers created a textural landscape for this “reception patio.” The mix of clay saucers and pots with glass cylinders creates an airy atmosphere and highlights the distinctive appearance of the cacti.

{opposite} The bouquet is a story of color and texture, using succulents as well as materials with lots of textures like the pincushion flower, celosia, and tillandsias (air plant). Surrounding the stems is a bright pink ribbon with bear grass finished with ribbon and bark wire.

Paris Inspires All.It Is So Good.

The raw space of Aria presents the perfect backdrop for a Paris-inspired fashion shoot. As an event site, Aria combines old world elegance with new world chic. Photographer Jennie Sewell used the raw urban spaces, so typical of the warehouse district of Minneapolis, to combine the vintage and fashion-forward style of modern Paris. The Aria alows the dressed to have a film noir quality.

This Marchesa gown, available at L’atelier Couture, combines the classic french design elements of structure and simplicity. The highly structured back evokes a 40’s vintage feel while the simple silhouette on the front elevates this gown into a piece of art.

Bringing in a flirtier take on Parisian glamour, this gown from Tara LaTour in a gold tone is playful and whimsical. The slightly architectural use of heavy textured fabric and unexpected hemline are offset with a simple strapless bodice.

Florist Tara from A Day In Provence designed this wall decor from manzanita branches with color blocking & vintage gold foliage. The unexpected pops of aqua create a separation from the raw walls, while the strong use of texture and natural wood elements match with this warehouse space.

This gown, also from Marchesa, is a classic silhouette, highly fitted through the knees, then cascading down in a simple elegance

Using techniques and silhouettes from the 1940’s, Brett Dorrian paired the feel of the WWII era with a stark palette echoing bold color choices from the 1980’s. This juxtaposition explored the serious nature of romance and wiles for poetic Paris. Feminine lines guided the translucently painted foundation and stained lips, but the fierce liner structure added in layers of complexity.

Vintage brooches & white feathers compliment the white hydrangea accented with a collar of draping andromeda. The blend of hard and soft, organic and metal, is a dramatic flourish to this bouquet.

Classic European design and Parisian elegance are the inspiration for these letterpress and foil stamped pieces from Smock, found at Paperista. The bold calligraphy and gold accents are simple,traditional, and elegant, while the green patterned envelope lining shows a truly modern feel. The vintage-feel coaster set is a playful addition to any soiree, finishes out the table.

Gently shake ingredients over crushed ice, strain, and pour into chilled glass lined with sugar.

This playful take on a classic martini is a Parisian favorite from the 1920’s. Sip this pre-dinner cocktail beloved by Paris in the Art Decomovement.

French 751 oz gin1 oz cointreau1 squeeze of lime2 oz champagne1 sugar cube (preferably Muscovado)

Shake gin, cointreau, and lime together in a shaker with crushed ice, pour into glass and top with champagne. Gently drop sugar cube into glass.

Gently golden, slightly efervescent, and classically French, this cocktail dates back to pre-World War II and is said to have emerged from the famed Harry’s Bar in Paris.
