La conversión de Raphael Simon(1909-2006)

RAPHAEL SIMON, siquíatra judío, nacido en 1909 en Nueva York. En el escrito sobre su conversión, titulado The road to Damascus (El camino a Damasco), dice:

Un día, abrí el Nuevo Testamento y leí: “No os inquietéis por vuestra vida, qué comeréis ni por vuestro cuerpo con qué os vestiréis. Mirad las aves del cielo, que no siembran ni siegan ni tienen graneros y vuestro Padre celestial las alimenta... Buscad primero el reino de Dios y su justicia que todo lo demás se os dará por añadidura” (Mt 6, 24-34). Aquí estaba la respuesta de Dios a mis atormentadas preguntas. Una gran paz me invadió. Y decidí dedicar todos los días cierto tiempo para la lectura del Nuevo Testamento... Se me habían abierto los ojos del alma, al descubrir cuán digno de amor es Jesús. Él era verdaderamente el hijo de Dios y había venido a la tierra en forma carnal, habiendo tomado la naturaleza humana en el seno de la Virgen María. Yo había llegado al convencimiento de la divinidad de Jesucristo. Mi origen judío no era ningún obstáculo. ¿No fue su fundador Jesucristo, un judío? ¿No fueron judíos su madre y sus apóstoles? ¿No se formó con judíos la primera comunidad de Jerusalén?... Después de recibir mi bautismo el 6 de noviembre de 1936, encontré en abundancia todo aquello que había esperado. En la Iglesia hallé lo que faltaba en el moderno judaísmo. Dios vivía en medio de su pueblo, los semitas espirituales.

Al final de su vida, se hizo sacerdote y religioso cisterciense.

Una anécdota

Del libro, Souvenirs of Solitude: Finding Rest in Abba's Embrace 2009 (2nd Ed, NavPress) - Brennan Manning

Un amigo mío judío que se convirtió al catolicismo hace varios años, escribió a Raphael Simón - monje trapense, psiquiatra conocido internacionalmente y hebreo-católico - pide programar una audiencia.

Su respuesta fue: Agenda llena. Venga en seis meses".

En las largas horas de oración, pensaba que los conversos preguntar durante la entrevista.

"No puedo perder el tiempo con abstracciones y generalidades".

Cuando llegó el día señalado, entró en el gabinete del padre Simón, se sentó y dijo sin rodeos:

"Tengo solamente una pregunta: ¿Cómo puedo convertirme en santo?"

El trapense entrecerró los ojos, se inclinó sobre la mesa, tomó la mano de mi amigo y le susurró con una intensidad conmovedora:

"Si usted lo quiere!"

La entrevista había terminado.

Este pasaje me lleva a pensar que soy consciente de que Dios toma la iniciativa y por su gracia que nos salvamos, pero soy invitado a trabajar con sinceridad, seriedad y la ferocidad de mi determinación para corresponder con su gracia salvadora.

Sin ÉL NADA PUEDO HACER. Pero sin mi cooperación, EL no puede hacer nada.

CRISTO NO ME SANTIFICARA SIN MI VOLUNTAD. Yo creo que Él me dará al final exactamente aquello que yo decida y creo que las tendencias y los deseos implícitos en mis decisiones serán mías, irremediablemente.

La obediencia a la Palabra, el hábito de la oración constante y la práctica diaria de la virtud cristiana exigen la colaboración activa de mi parte. Se trata de hacer lo que Simon dijo:

"Si usted lo quiere!"

Padre Raphael Simon, OCSO, 97 años, un monje trapense de la Abadía de San José , 167 north Spencer Road, murió el domingo, 12 de noviembre 2006 en la enfermería de la abadía después de una larga batalla contra el cáncer. Nació como Kenneth Alwyn Simon en Nueva York en 1909, se graduó en la Universidad de Michigan (Ann Arbor), pasando su tercer año en Alemania estudiando filosofía en la Universidad de Berlín. Recibió el grado de Doctor en Medicina por la Universidad de Chicago, tras lo cual se internó en Oak Park Hospital en Chicago y como psiquiatra clínico en el Hospital Bellevue de Nueva York. En 1940 ingresó en el monasterio trapense de Nuestra Señora del Valle en Lonsdale, Rhode Island, profesando sus votos en 1946. Se ordenó como sacerdote en 1947. Tras un desastroso incendio que destruyó el monasterio de Rhode Island, en 1950, los monjes se trasladaron a Spencer, Massachusetts, la construcción se convortió en la Abadía de San José. Una vez que la comunidad monástica se volvió a establecer, el Padre Rafael asumió sus funciones en el monasterio como confesor, director espiritual, consejero, maestro y escritor durante muchos años.

About Fr. Raphael Simon O.C.S.O.

Fr. Raphael Simon received his M.D. at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor). He did psychiatric internships at Bellevue Hospital and Brooklyn State Hospital in New York City, and was psychiatrist at

an institution for delinquent boys, Lincoln Hall, Lincolndale, New York. He became a priest in the Cistercian Order of the Strict Observance and is a monk of Saint Joseph’s Abbey, Spencer,

Massachusetts. He has given retreats to the monks of his Order in the United States and Ireland and has been a retreat master and director for monks, priests and lay people. The story of his conversion from

Judaism is told in his book The Glory of Thy People.
