  • 3Aiken Symphony Orchestra 2020 - 2021 Season 2 Aiken Symphony Orchestra 2020 - 2021 Season

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENTWelcome to the revival of the Aiken Symphony Orchestra. 2020 has been a year when the music became silent and we focused on the sounds of fear.

For those of you that are excited to hear the heartbeat of the ASO again, the revival has not been an easy path. To say that this has been a difficult year for all involved in the production of making this happen is an understatement.

As president, I want to begin the 2020-2021 season by expressing my sincere thanks to each of whom have continued to support us both financially and in many other ways. Our board of directors and staff have been an inspiration and have worked so hard to keep the blood of our organization flowing. Numerous meetings and researching everything involved to provide safety for our patrons, maestro, musicians, and staff has been first and foremost in our minds. The challenges Dr. Donald Portnoy has faced in reworking the schedule amid obstacles never before faced have made this season’s planning one that we hope never to repeat.

Once again, my message is “Thank You”. Music is only beautiful when it is heard.

    Sincerely,

    Thomas H Herlong

ABOUT THE MAESTRO Hello! Welcome to the University of South Carolina Aiken. We are committed to doing our part to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Towards that end, the university asks everyone to take personal responsibility to protect the health and safety of faculty, staff, students, and visitors. To do so, face coverings must be worn in all hallways, elevators, public spaces, and common areas of all UofSC Aiken buildings. Additionally, please practice physical distancing of at least six feet; wash your hands frequently with soap and water, or by taking advantage of the hand sanitizing dispensers places around the building; practice appropriate hygiene, cough, and sneeze etiquette; and adhere to all posted regulations in the facility.

Furthermore, it is noted that all event attendees knowingly and voluntarily elect to participate in this program at this time, and accept the risks outlined by the CDC and the University of South Carolina Aiken. For more information on steps taken by the university to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19, please visit usca.edu/pacer-ready. Thank you for your cooperation and support in keeping the Aiken community safe.

Due to the serious threat to the safety and welfare of individuals posed by Covid-19, the University of South Carolina Aiken—like many institutions of higher education—transitioned to online instruction and remote operations in mid-March for the duration of the Spring 2020 and Summer 2020 semesters. Since that time, many countries, states, and municipalities have imposed stay-at-home orders designed to “flatten the curve” of those needing serious medical attention by requiring many businesses to conduct operations remotely. Given these restrictions, the University of South Carolina Aiken encourages students to attend courses remotely whenever possible.

Once approval is in place for return to campus, departments will comply with all relevant safety guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and state and local health authorities regarding workplace health and safety currently in effect, such as cleaning and sanitation, social distancing, limited size of gatherings, and requiring adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) by the attendees.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF RISK AND WAIVER OF LIABILITY

On March 13, 2020, the President of the United States declared a state of emergency related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, each state and region of the United States has issued emergency orders with specific limitations related to travel, essential jobs, stay-at-home directives, and other personal limitations in place for the safety of individuals and the community and to prevent the transmission of COVID-19. I understand that COVID-19 can be a serious illness requiring medical treatment, which may require hospitalization, and which may result in long-term or permanent injury to me, including death.

I have reviewed the University of South Carolina webpage containing Coronavirus/COVID-19

Information, including but not limited to information available from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). I understand the risks associated with contracting COVID-19 and further understand and accept my responsibility to conduct myself responsibly by following all applicable advice and directives to prevent transmission. Specifically, I will wear adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) while on campus and I will not knowingly interact with persons who have tested positive for COVID-19 or who are presumed positive for COVID-19.

The Director for the Office of External Programs, Continuing Education, and Conferences,

Karen Edgington, has received assurances from the university confirming that the site is in compliance with any federal, state, and local guidance or requirements related to COVID-19. If I find that the site is not in compliance for any reason, I will notify the Director, or Coordinator of Operations, Nick Bolick immediately.

I agree that I am solely responsible for my choice to engage in on-site programs at this time. I

also understand that the guidance from the CDC, the University of South Carolina, the University of South Carolina Aiken, and the Office of External Programs, Continuing Education, and Conferences, and I may be required to adhere to those changes.
