Highlights of the Year 年度大事摘要

Standout events from 2018/19 touch on areas such as awards and achievements, donations, institutional development, the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences, merging art and technology, and honorary awards. Although we only offer a sample of the successes over the year, a clear pattern emerges of hard-working, talented individuals contributing to the good name of the University.

Awards and AchievementsThe cutting-edge research of our faculty was well received in the international arena over the past academic year. The following offers an overview of some of the highlights.

Professor Luk Kwai-man, Chair Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering, was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK in September 2018 in recognition of his profound contributions to advancing the development of antennas.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) honoured CityU’s outstanding joint laboratory during a visit in November 2018. Professor Bai Chunli, President of CAS, and Dr Tan Tieniu, Vice-Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in HKSAR, led a delegation to CityU. Professor Bai presented an honorary certificate to CityU in recognition of its Joint Laboratory of Nanomaterials and Nanomechanics as one of the “outstanding joint laboratories” in an evaluation of the laboratories jointly established by CAS and academic institutions in Hong Kong, while CityU’s Joint Laboratory on Neutron Scattering Science and Technology was ranked 1st among five new joint laboratories that fulfilled the requirements of the evaluation.

2018/19年度值得記述的大事，包括教員屢獲獎項、 社會賢達踴躍捐款、大學穩定發展、賽馬會動物醫學及 生 命 科 學 院 喜 訊 頻 傳 、 科 技 與 藝 術 的 結 合 廣 獲 好評、頒授榮譽學位予傑出人士。本年報僅展示城大去年的部分成就，但已清晰表明，努力不懈、優秀 傑出的人才在提升大學聲譽方面貢獻良多。

獎項及成就過去這一學年，城大教研人員的尖端研究廣獲全球 學術界讚譽，以下是重點摘要。

2018年9月，電子工程學系講座教授陸貴文教授榮獲 英國皇家工程院院士銜，以表彰他對推動天線研究的卓越貢獻。

2018年11月，中國科學院(中科院)院長白春禮教授及 中央人民政府駐香港特別行政區聯絡辦公室副主任 譚鐵牛博士率團到訪城大。白教授向城大頒發榮譽 證書，確認其「納米材料與力學聯合實驗室」在中科院與香港地區聯合實驗室評估中，獲評為「優秀類」聯合實驗室。此外，城大「中子散射科學技術聯合實驗室」在通過評估的五個新增聯合實驗室中排名第一。

2 0 1 8 年 1 2 月 ， 城 大 十 位 教 研 人 員 獲 科 睿 唯 安 選 為 2018年高度被引用研究人員。這份名單旨在表彰對 科學及社會科學有重大影響力的研究人員。他們因 在各自學科範疇發表多篇論文，並在2006年至2016年間獲徵引次數位居最高1%之列而膺選。當中有兩位 城大學者在特別為跨領域研究而新設的跨學科組別 中膺選。

材料科學及工程學系Andrey Rogach教授榮獲2018年 德國洪堡基金會Carl Friedrich von Siemens研究獎， 他是香港的唯一得主；他亦榮獲裘槎基金會「優秀科 研者獎」，以表彰他對鈣鈦礦納米晶體裝置的開創性 研究。

2019年1月，物理學系張瑞勤教授獲美國物理學會頒予會士榮銜，以表彰他對計算物理學的卓越貢獻。

2019年3月，校長郭位教授獲法國政府授予法國國家 榮譽軍團勳章(騎士勳位)，以表彰他致力促進城大與法國在多個研究和合作領域的密切聯繫。

數學系Felipe Cucker教授、楊彤教授獲選為歐洲科學院院士，以表彰他們在數學領域的卓越貢獻。

學務副校長兼化學及材料科學講座教授任廣禹教授 亦獲選為歐洲科學院院士。

副校長(研究及科技)呂堅教授、生物醫學系系主任兼楊建文講座教授(生物醫學)楊夢甦教授、材料科學及工程學系副教授華禮生博士、化學系林漢華教授分別帶領研究團隊於瑞士舉行的第47屆日內瓦國際發明展榮獲兩項金獎和兩項銀獎。

Ten CityU scholars were honoured for their highly cited papers in December 2018 by Clarivate Analytics. The list recognises scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated substantial influence in their fields through the publication of highly cited papers ranked in the top 1% by citations between 2006 and 2016. Two CityU academics were named in a new cross-field category created for interdisciplinary research.

Professor Andrey Rogach of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering was the only recipient from Hong Kong of the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in 2018. He was also awarded a Senior Research Fellowship by the Croucher Foundation for his pioneering work on perovskite nanocrystals-enabled devices.

Professor Zhang Ruiqin of the Department of Physics was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society for his outstanding contribution to computational physics in January 2019.

Professor Way Kuo, University President, was bestowed the title and rank of Chevalier de l’Ordre National de la Legion d’Honneur (Knight of the Legion of Honour) in March 2019 for promoting strong relations between CityU and France in many areas of research and collaboration.

Professor Felipe Cucker and Professor Yang Tong, both from the Department of Mathematics, were elected Fellows of the European Academy of Sciences in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the field of mathematics.

Professor Alex Jen Kwan-yue, Provost and Chair Professor of Chemistry and Materials Science, was also elected Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences.

Professor Lu Jian, Vice-President (Research and Technology), Professor Michael Yang Mengsu, Yeung Kin Man Chair Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Head of the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Dr Roy Vellaisamy, Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and Professor Michael Lam Hon-wah of the Department of Chemistry led teams that won two Gold Medals and two Silver Medals at the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in Switzerland.

Chair Professor Chan Chi-hou of the Department of Electronic Engineering was honoured with the 2019 IEEE AP-S Harrington-Mittra Computational Electromagnetics Award, a highly prestigious award in the field of computational electromagnetics.

A project co-led by Dr Carol Lin Sze-ki, Associate Professor in the School of Energy and Environment and an expert on microbial fermentation and bioprocessing, was awarded US$100,000 by Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, for a novel way to cultivate 10 distinct probiotic bacteria simultaneously.

Professor Sun Dong, Chair Professor and Head of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, was elected Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering for his outstanding achievements in robotics and biomedical engineering.

In addition, a high-tech enterprise specialising in 3D sensing technology founded by an alumnus was included in the 2017 China Unicorn Enterprise Development Report compiled by the Ministry of Science and Technology in July 2018. A “unicorn enterprise” refers to start-ups with a valuation of more than US$1 billion.

We won two awards in the Universum Talent 2018 Survey. CityU was awarded second place in the Best Career Services Satisfaction Award for the second year running, and, for the first time, was awarded third place in the Best University Brand Perception Award.

Donations from SupportersFundraising saw another healthy year with donations helping to support our long-term development. These generous gifts from our supporters show the extent to which CityU is entrusted with nurturing student talent and producing cutting-edge research.

Thanks to donors who supported the University in maximising the opportunity of the Government Matching Grant VIII, the University received donation pledges amounting to some HK$400 million of which HK$48 million have been recognised during the year.

The following are just a few of the examples of the donations we have received over the past year.

A HK$120 million gift in August 2018 from Dr The Honourable Lee Shau-kee, GBM, Chairman of Henderson Land Development Company Limited, will help to set up endowed chair professorships and student scholarships, and support our overall development. The donation was made through the Lee Shau Kee Foundation.

A HK$3 million donation from the Tan Siu Lin Foundation will be used to establish an endowment fund to sponsor undergraduates on non-local exchange programmes. The Foundation was set up by Dr Tan Siu Lin, SBS, the founder and Honorary Life Chairman of Luen Thai Group Limited.

More than HK$14.6 million was raised at the annual dinner of the CityU Foundation in November 2018 in support of the University’s One Health initiative. The record donation will be used to set up scholarships, fund pioneering research, and enhance teaching and research facilities.

A HK$2 million donation in February 2019 from the Chu Wong Yim Fong Charitable Foundation will be used to set up a scholarship and bursary endowment fund for CityU students. The Foundation has been rendering support to the University since 2014 and almost 100 undergraduates have benefited.

A HK$5 million donation from the Tin Ka Ping Foundation in June 2019 will promote moral education, Chinese culture, and integration with world civilisation. Last year, the Foundation gifted CityU a HK$3 million donation.

電子工程學系講座教授陳志豪教授，榮獲2019年電機電子工程師學會天線及傳播分會Harrington-Mittra計算電磁學獎。

城大的環境科學家研發新方法，可同時培養10種不同益生菌，在比爾及梅琳達•蓋茨基金會設立的「大挑戰探索計劃」中脫穎而出，獲10萬美元資助。領導研究的是能源及環境學院副教授連思琪博士，她是微生物 發酵及生物處理專家。

生物醫學工程學系講座教授兼系主任孫東教授獲選為加拿大工程院院士，以表彰他在機器人學及生物醫學工程的卓越成就。

此外，城大校友創立的3D傳感技術高科技企業奧比 中 光 ， 獲 國 家 科 技 部 列 入「 20 1 7年 中 國 獨 角 獸 企 業 榜單」。「獨角獸」指估值達10億美元以上的初創企業。

城大在優興諮詢的2018全球人才調查中，連續第二年獲 得「 最 佳 就 業 服 務 滿 意 獎 」第 二 名 ， 同 時 首 次 獲 「最佳大學品牌認知獎」第三名。

各界友好的熱心捐贈 城大去年獲得社會賢達熱心捐助，支持我們的長期 發展，籌得的款項持續穩健增長。這些慷慨捐贈表明各界友好對城大的信任，將培育學生才能及開展尖端研究的重任托付給城大。

大學感激各界友好及捐助者的信任，支持大學把握 政府第八輪配對補助金計劃的良機。大學籌得約4億 港元，包括2018/19年度已收捐款4,800萬港元。

過去一年我們收到不少捐助，以下是一些例子。

2 0 18年 8月 ， 獲 恒 基 兆 業 地 產 集 團 主 席 李 兆 基 博 士 大 紫 荊 勳 賢 捐 贈 1 . 2 億 港 元 。 是 次 捐 款 來 自 李 兆 基 基金，以支持大學設立冠名講座教授席和獎學金， 以及大學整體發展。

城 大 獲 聯 泰 集 團 創 辦 人 及 永 遠 榮 譽 主 席 陳 守 仁 博士，SBS，設立的「陳守仁基金會」300萬港元捐款， 成立留本基金資助本科生參與非本地交流計劃。

2 0 1 8 年 1 1 月 ， 城 大 基 金 舉 行 周 年 晚 宴 ， 共 籌 得 逾 1,460萬港元，打破歷年紀錄。晚宴籌得的款項將用 作支持大學「健康一體化」的工作，包括設立獎學金、資助具前瞻性的研究，以及提升教研設施。

2019年2月，獲朱黃艷芳慈善基金捐贈200萬港元， 成立留本基金用於獎助學金。朱黃艷芳慈善基金自2014年起捐助城大，至今已有近百名學生受惠。

2019年6月，城大繼上一年獲田家炳基金會捐贈300萬港元後，再次獲得500萬港元捐助，以促進道德教育、弘揚中華文化、融入世界文明。

Institutional DevelopmentAn institution should never stand still if it wishes to fulfill its teaching and research role in society. The following initiatives demonstrate our forward-looking mentality and aspiration to grow.

The launch of the School of Data Science and the Hong Kong Institute for Data Science in July 2018 heralded a new era in higher education in Hong Kong. These initiatives directly respond to the increased demand for data scientists and engineers who will support future societal and economic development. The new School of Data Science aims to become a world-class hub for excellence in this exciting new academic discipline and reflects a strategic development to meet the demands of a data-driven economy.

The Visitor Centre that opened in the summer of 2018 reflects CityU’s culture of innovation and openness. There is ample space for displaying souvenirs plus the showpiece of the centre: a substantial interactive TV wall that reveals rich multi-media content such as motion-detection games for multiple users. It broadcasts stories about CityU’s most recent accomplishments as well.

Plans for a joint laboratory in financial technology and engineering were unveiled by CityU and JD Digits, a leading digital technology company in mainland China, under a strategic collaborative agreement signed in December 2018. The laboratory will research areas such as asset pricing, financial risk monitoring and user behaviour.

Research into neutron scattering in Hong Kong received a boost in February 2019 with the launch of the City University of Hong Kong—Institute of High Energy Physics Joint Laboratory on Neutron Scattering with the Institute of High Energy Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It’s the only laboratory in Hong Kong for research into this discipline and has great potential to enhance the city’s role in developing science and technology in the Greater Bay Area. It will work closely with the China Spallation Neutron Source in Dongguan on professional training, research projects and facilities.

Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences The City University of Hong Kong Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (CityU VDL) was officially launched in July 2018, marking a milestone in the development of veterinary medicine in Hong Kong and the region.

CityU VDL is one of the most comprehensive and advanced veterinary diagnostic laboratories in Asia, and an additional resource for identifying, tracking and addressing emerging animal diseases and public health issues. In addition to providing full service to the veterinary community of Hong Kong and the region, it is an important training ground for the Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme, contributing to veterinary pathology teaching and research.

The following month, we celebrated the naming of Hong Kong’s first and only veterinary college: the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences in collaboration with Cornell University. A high point during the ceremony was the announcement by University Grants Committee (UGC) Chairman Mr Carlson Tong Ka-shing that following the results of an international Task Force review, the UGC would be recommending that the government accept CityU’s proposal to establish an undergraduate Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine programme as a publicly funded programme.

大學發展一所大學要在社會中發揮其教學與研究的作用，就不能停滯不前。以下舉措展示了城大的遠見卓識與銳意進取的志向。

2018年7月，城大成立數據科學學院及香港數據科學 研究院，開創本港高等教育新時代。社會對數據科學研究人員及工程師的需求與日俱增，培養這類人才 有助支持未來社會及經濟發展。城大的新舉措及時 並直接回應此需求，新創立的數據科學學院旨在成為該範疇的世界級卓越教學中心。城大的長遠發展目標之一，是滿足數據主導經濟對人才的需求。

2018年夏，城大訪客中心啟用，反映了我們的創新開放文化。中心場地寬敞，足以展出城大各種紀念品 以及重點展品：互動電視牆。牆上載有豐富的多媒 體內容，例如可供多人一起玩的動態感應遊戲，亦會播放影片，介紹城大最新成就。

2018年 12月，城大與內地領先的數碼科技公司京東 數字科技簽訂戰略合作協定，共同設立聯合實驗室。聯合實驗室將在個人消費資產的風險定價、風險控制模型建構、使用者行為分析等多個領域展開研究。

2019年2月，由城大及中國科學院高能物理研究所合作成立的中子散射科學技術聯合實驗室正式揭幕，將引領香港在中子散射這個極具潛力領域的發展，提升 本港在大灣區的科研地位。聯合實驗室是本港唯一 研究中子散射的實驗室，將與東莞的中國散裂中子源在專才培訓、科研及設備上緊密合作。

動物醫學及生命科學2018年7月，城大動物醫療檢驗中心正式啟用，標誌了香港以至亞洲區內的動物醫學發展里程碑。

該中心是目前亞洲最全面、最先進的動物檢驗診斷化驗所之一，除了為本港以至區內動物醫學界提供全面的檢驗服務外，更在辨認、追蹤及處理新興動物傳染病及公共健康議題方面增添助力，並肩負教學和研究重任，可作為獸醫病理學學生的重要培訓基地。

隨後在2018年8月，城大慶祝香港首家及唯一的動物 醫 學 院 命 名 為「 賽 馬 會 動 物 醫 學 及 生 命 科 學 院 」， 學院由城大與其國際夥伴美國康奈爾大學合作建立。典禮上，大學教育資助委員會(教資會)主席唐家成 先生宣佈，教資會將根據國際工作小組的檢討報告，建議政府接納城大提案，把獸醫學學士課程納入政府資助的本科課程。

In January 2019, JCC was granted $35 million in government funding to enhance the sustainability, health and production of local livestock farms and fisheries. Projects will focus on improving pig, poultry and fish health and farming over a two-year period.

Opening in April 2019, the CityU Veterinary Medical Centre, the largest veterinary clinic in Southeast Asia, will provide medical cases and practicum opportunities for students at the Jockey Club College of Veterinary Medicine and Life Sciences. With a floor area of approximately 33,000 square feet, the three-storey centre is equipped with an intensive care unit for animals, a cardiology suite, 22 consultation rooms, nine dedicated operating theatres, and 24/7 emergency services operated by registered emergency veterinarians. Merging Art and TechnologyThe achievements of our faculty in the area of art and technology continued to attract widespread acclaim. The deployment of creative media technologies to augment art counts as one of the most intriguing outcomes of the digital revolution.

In October 2018, we presented “ANiMAL: Art Science Nature Society” in collaboration with the National Palace Museum (NPM) in Taipei, our third such joint project. “Unique” is an over-used word but in this case, it is perfectly apt. The displays presented representative animals from different eras using ultra-high-resolution facsimiles of the NPM’s Chinese classical art treasury, digital and interactive installations, projection mapping, augmented and virtual reality, movies, photographs, sculptures, paintings and music.

In May 2019, this exhibition, which was on show from October 2018 to January 2019 at the CityU Exhibition Gallery, won in the category “Onsite Digital Experience” for the MUSE Awards at the Alliance of American Museums Convention. The MUSE Awards recognise outstanding achievements in Galleries, Libraries, Archives or Museums media and celebrate scholarship, community, innovation, creativity, education and inclusiveness.

Following hot on the heels of the “ANiMAL” exhibition was the “Art Deco. The France—China Connection” exhibition in March 2019. It featured more than 300 Art Deco artefacts from museums, institutions and private collectors not only in France but also in Hong Kong and Shanghai. The aim was to trace the origins of Art Deco in France, examine the influence of Chinese arts and craftsmanship on French designers and artisans, and explore the Art Deco lifestyle in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Hangzhou.

Honorary AwardsEach year we see a growing list of outstanding pillars of society joining the CityU family through the offer of honorary titles.

In October 2018, we conferred the title of Honorary Fellow on Mr Harry S. Banga, founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Caravel Group; Miss Tong Hing-min, a professional in education and human resources; and Mr Wong Chun-hong, Executive Director, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Top Spring International Holdings Ltd, in recognition of their distinctive contributions to the development of, and service to, CityU.

Honorary doctorates were awarded to four distinguished persons in recognition of their significant contributions to education and the well-being of society: Professor Alain Aspect, Mr Hu Shao Ming Herman, SBS, JP, Professor Cédric Villani and Dr the Honourable Lee Shau-kee, GBM, in November 2018.

2019年1月，賽馬會動物醫學及生命科學院獲漁農自然護理署撥款近3,500萬港元，資助三個研究項目，改善豬隻、家禽及魚類的健康及生產方法，並促進本地 養豬業、家禽業及水產養殖業的可持續發展。研究 項目各為期兩年。

20 19年 4月 ， 城 大 動 物 醫 療 中 心 啟 用 。 這 是 東 南 亞 最具規模的動物醫療機構之一，將為賽馬會動物醫學及生命科學院的專家提供動物患病案例及為修讀相關 課程的學生提供實習機會。該中心實用面積達3.3萬 平方呎，佔地三層，設有全港首個動物深切治療部、心臟專科中心、22間診症室、9間手術室，及由註冊 急症科專科獸醫管理、全年無休的24小時急症服務。

藝術與科技結合城 大 教 研 人 員 結 合 藝 術 及 科 技 的 成 就 ， 繼 續 廣 獲 讚譽。運用創意媒體技術提升藝術，成為數碼變革中極為奇妙的成果之一。

2018年10月，城大與臺北的國立故宮博物院(故宮) 第三度合作，攜手舉辦「動物大觀園」展覽。「獨具 匠心」是一個常被濫用的成語，但用來描述這次展覽卻最適當不過。「動物大觀園」以超高解析度的故宮 收藏品摹本、數碼及互動裝置、立體光雕、擴增及 虛擬實景、影片、照片、雕塑、畫作及音樂等不同 方式呈現從古到今的多種動物。展覽由2018年10月至 2019年1月於城大展覽館舉行。

2019年5月，「動物大觀園」展覽榮獲美國博物館聯盟 繆思獎「現場數碼體驗」類別的金獎。該獎項是美國 博物館聯盟為表彰畫廊、圖書館、檔案館和博物館的傑出媒體成就而設立，獎勵博物館在學術、社群、 創新、創意、教育及包容性等方面的努力。

2019年3月，繼大受歡迎的「動物大觀園」展覽之後， 城大舉辧了「裝飾藝術：當法國與中國交匯」展覽， 展出由法國、香港與上海多家博物館、機構及私人 收藏家提供的300多件珍品。這次展覽除了講解裝飾 藝術於法國的緣起，還追溯裝飾藝術與中國藝術的 關係，反映當時法國設計師及工匠受到中國藝術及 技巧的影響，並展示裝飾藝術風格在香港、上海和 杭州流行的情況。

頒授榮譽學位城大每年頒授榮銜予社會傑出人士，歡迎他們加入 城大大家庭。

2 0 1 8 年 1 0月 ， 城 大 頒 授 榮 譽 院 士 名 銜 予 三 位 傑 出 人士，以表彰他們促進城大發展並為之服務的傑出 貢獻。他們是：拓維集團創辦人、主席兼行政總裁 哈利•般哥先生；教育及人力資源專業人士唐慶綿 女士；萊蒙國際集團有限公司執行董事、主席兼行政總裁黃俊康先生。

2018年11月，城大頒授榮譽博士學位予四位傑出人士，以表彰他們對教育及社會福祉的重大貢獻。他們是 阿蘭•阿斯佩教授、胡曉明先生， SBS， JP、賽德 里克•維拉尼教授、李兆基博士大紫荊勳賢。
