imos and the Jämsä Region offer many
exciting events in summer. The summer sea-
son of events is inaugurated by the largest sport-
ing event in Finland – Jämsä-Jukola 2013 – with ap-
proximately 40,000–50,000 fans of orienteering
participating in the event. Summer in Himos is filled
by festival visitors of four large-scale festivals. The
newest addition to the festivals is Jysäri that will
bring the hottest artists of the 90s to Himos. At the
end of June, the range of activities at Himos will be
further improved with a new, 18-hole golf course.
Summer exhibitions offer great experiences for art
lovers. Jämsä Felt Summer celebrates its 15th an-
niversary with the theme Mysterious Garden. The
traditional summer exhibitions include once again,
for example, Ars Jok v́ars, Environmental Art Ex-
hibition and Valkama Art Weeks with high-quality
concerts. See the art exhibitions on pages 18–20!
Among the many popular summer events are the
Market of the Old Chap of Jämsä, Akuliina Sum-
mer Festival, Aulis Olympics and diverse sporting
events as well as village and market events. The
Neste Rally will once more pound the gravel roads
of Ouninpohja and special stages of Himos. Fans of
motor sports can also experience the wild Super-
enduro event for the whole family in July.
In between summer events, you can enjoy magnifi-
cent vistas of Lake Päijänne on the deck of the Tuu-
likki ship, practise the rules of the road with your
kids at the Traffic Park, see summer theatre per-
formances or explore the museums of the region.
Come and enjoy the summer of Jämsä and Himos!

ämsä is town of education. In the Jämsä
Region, basic education is provided
at eight primary schools, three secondary
schools and one comprehensive school.
In addition, there are two general upper
secondary schools: one in Jämsä and one
in Jämsänkoski. School buildings have been
renovated at a fast pace in the past decade
and the work continues still.

Old Chap of Jamsa
The belly shape of the Old Chap of Jamsa reflects the willpower of Jamsa to grow and develop.
.. ..
– THE FATHER OF JÄMSÄ STORIES
ämsän Äijä - The Old Chap of Jämsä was
a happy wanderer from Jämsä. The sto-
ries about this rascal date back 150 years. The
stories about the Old Chap of Jämsä are also
the origin of the City of Jämsä slogan: Jämsä
– the story of your life.
‘Left out like the Old Chap of Jämsä from
heaven’ is a legend that is strongly present in
the story tradition of Jämsä. There are many
beliefs about the origin of the saying. There
are stories about St Peter preventing the
Old Chap of Jämsä from entering heaven on
J
Jämsän Äijä ja Ämmä - The Old
Chap and Woman of Jämsä are

Market .

several occasions for varying reasons. A more
worldly version involves the past when people
travelled from Jämsä to Jyväskylä and Lahti by
river boat. A man from Jämsä arrived breath-
less at the jetty just as the boat had left, and it
would not come back despite his yelling. Vil-
lagers who had come to see off the boat said
that the Old Chap of Jämsä had been left out
of the boat. A tramp sitting nearby rephrased
the sentence to ‘the Old Chap of Jämsä was
left out of heaven’.
Probably the best explanation to suit modern
times is the most recent version – ‘The Old
Chap of Jämsä was left out of heaven because
his mission is not yet finished’. Come and meet
the Old Chap of Jämsä!

he business tradition of the Old Man
of Jämsä: resource fulness and prosper-
ity dating back over 100 years are still going
strong. The region hosts several companies
exuding resilient entrepreneurship and a will
to succeed.
The following have their roots deeply embed-
ded in the soil of Jämsä: Hiihtokeskus Himos-
vuori Oy, Himoslomat Oy, Huopaliike Lahtinen
Oy, Elonen Oy, Jokilaakson eristys Oy, Jyki Oy,
Järvelä & Ståhlberg Oy, Lindroosin Sora Oy,
Rantasen Kello Oy, Nisula Forest Oy and many
other small, large and international companies.
The central location at the node of roads 9
and 24 as well as excellent road and railway
connections are significant strengths for
business operations. There is a strong paper
industry cluster and a national centre for
the aviation industry in the Jämsä Region.
International companies, such as UPM and
Patria, are significant employers in the re-
gion. Himos is one of Finland’s most popular,
year-round holiday and leisure centres. The
growth prospects and possibilities for tour-
ism are excellent in the region.
The active entrepreneurial atmosphere in
Jämsä and collaboration of different actors
create good preconditions for successful
business operations. The business advisers
of Jämsek are at your service. Read more at

JUKOLA2013
JÄMSÄ-
ämsän Retki-Veikot Orienteering Club
is in charge of organising the national
orienteering competition Jämsä-Jukola on
15–16 June 2013. The 65th Jukola Relay and
36th Venla Relay will take place in the vicinity
of Jämsänkoski. The surroundings of the Myl-
lymäki field are ideal for organising the Jukola
Relay. The orienteering terrain is varied and
sufficiently demanding for both top athletes
and amateurs alike.
Back in 1978, when the first women’s Venla
Relay was held in the terrain of Pihlajavuori
and Laajakallio in Kuorevesi, the event was at
least three times smaller in terms of numbers
of people. Now, some 15,000 participants
are expected at Jämsä-Jukola. Besides
participants, trainers, family members and
spectators will also be present. During the
weekend, the total number of people present
is estimated at 40,000–50,000.
Televising the competition, displaying it on
giant screens at the competition centre and
organising the real-time result service online
set high technical demands for organising the
competition but also put orienteering in the
public eye.
The event with its overnight competition
taking place in the beautiful Finnish nature
is sure to provide great experiences of the
unique atmosphere of a large-scale event.

15th anniversary exhibition of
Finnish Felt Association Filtti
and the 15th felt summer of Jämsä
2013 – in two locations:
• Jokivarsi school centre, Jämsä 1.7. – 28.7.2013
• Kivipankki Gallery 1.7. – 4.8.2013
Both open from Sunday to Friday 12 – 18,
Saturdays 12 – 17.
The felt exhibition gathers the ideas and the
versatile know-how of the members of Finnish
felt Association into products and art works.
The theme of the exhibition shows as concrete
garden products and items, objects and space
which one might see and experience in a gar-
den. The exhibition guides one’s thoughts into
mythic growth of forms, from seeds of ideas
into a growth story. The growing felt of the
mysterious garden nourishes senses and soul.
The international partner in the exhibition
this summer is the German Felt Association
Filz-Netzwerk e.V. with their exhibition called
garten: verwunschen oder rätselhaft, bring-
ing their own perspektive into the mysterious
garden.
During the summer exhibition there will be
short felt workshops. More information of
workshops, registration and Filtti exhibitions
can be found from www.filtti.fi.
