“The World Press Photo Exhibition 2015” will be held between June 27 and August 9 at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space (Ikebukuro, Tokyo). One of the largest of its kind in the world, this photogra-phy exhibition began when the World Press Photo Foundation was founded in 1955 in the Netherlands. Some 150 photos will be on display divided into themes such as the world’s ongoing military conflicts, issues affecting modern society, and miraculous moments in sporting events.

The exhibition “The Art Of Gundam” will be held between July 18 and September 27 at Mori Arts Center Gallery (Roppongi, Tokyo). “Mobile Suit Gundam” was an animation broadcast on television in 1979 which became a social phenomenon with the 1981 movie adaptation. Highlights of this exhibition include 1,000 items used in the production and a pro-jection mapping show. Same-day admission for the general public: 2,000 yen.

The “Micro-monster Exhibition” will be held in Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise (Yokohama City, Kanagawa Prefecture) until July 12. Sea Paradise is one of the largest aquariums in Japan. This special exhibition will feature creatures including sea fireflies, and gnathiidaes (sea stag beetles) that range in size from several millimeters to less than two centimeters high when fully grown. Through animated representations and the latest digital camera technol-ogy, visitors will feel as if they are encountering the kind of monsters that appear in video games. “Uirou” is a cake made from steamed rice powder. Ever since the third generation chef at Aoyagi Souhonke (Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture) began to sell them at Nagoya train station, they’ve become known as a local specialty. There are five flavors available, including white (white sugar), black (muscovado), and matcha (green tea). One cake costs 350 yen. Half-size, bite-size, and seasonal flavors, including tomato, are also available.

A special exhibition, “Leaps in Evolution – Tracing the Path of Vertebrate Evolution,” will be held between July 7 and October 4 at the National Museum of Nature and Science (Ueno, Tokyo). East of Asakusa, across the gently rippled waters of the Sumida River, Tokyo’s newest landmark combines with one of the city’s oddest modern architectural sights to create what is arguably now east Tokyo’s most distinctive view. At 634 meters, the white-metallic lattice frame of Tokyo Skytree—the new landmark in question—rises above Tokyo’s east side like a glistening spear thrust to the heavens, punc-tuating the skyline and visible from all parts of the city even before its completion in 2012. Built over four years by Tobu Railway and a group of six terrestrial broadcasters for the dual purpose of being a radio/television broadcast tower and forming the centerpiece of a several-building commercial development that also comprises restaurants, offi ce spaces and amusement facilities, Skytree has become one Tokyo’s biggest tourist attractions. In Skytree’s fi rst week of business, some 1.6 million people visited the tower. In the fi rst year, the fi gured topped 50 million.
The main reasons for that popularity—besides the insatiable Japanese thirst for anything new—are the height and the views. Behind the

829.9-meter Burj Khalifa in Dubai, Skytree is the second tallest structure in the world, and from its observations decks, one 450 meters up, the other a still vertigo-inducing 350 meters, the 360-degree views of Tokyo and beyond are simply breathtaking.
But what about the odd-looking building that shares the Sumida River skyline with Skytree? We have architect Philippe Starck and the company he designed it for, Asahi Beer, to thank for that. Completed in 1989, the building serves as Asahi’s head offi ce, and design wise certainly appears to pay homage to
Asahi’s products—beside a stout building with a polished black granite façade on top of which sits a 300-ton golden “fl ame”, stands a taller building, with a shimmering golden exterior and foam shaped white roof, designed to look like a glass of chilled lager.
By day, Skytree and Starck’s creation together form a startling sight—a near-hypnotic eyesore. Illuminated at night, when both seem to hover above the Sumida River, which itself is accented by the orange lanterns of the yakatabune (houseboats-turned-fl oating restaurants) plying the water, it’s just mesmerizing.

and were originally used as underwear worn beneath men’s pants. They were made from “cotton crepe,” a crimped material that effectively absorbs sweat, and were regularly used during the hottest time of the year. However, since people thought of them as being “something old men wear,” white suteteko were per-ceived as being uncool and gradually fewer and fewer young people wore them.2011 年

The worst experience I had here was on March 11, 2011, when the great earthquake happened in Eastern Japan. We are a small embassy and community here, but we felt we needed to stay to support our friends in Sendai (Miyagi Prefecture) and wherever else this natural disaster affected people. I w o u l d like to recom-mend three of Albania’s best s i g h t s e e i n g spots. These are cities registered by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. We have the cities of Gjirokastra – also known as “the city of stone” – and Berat, which is known as the “city of a thousand windows.” These cities are still inhabited. The third one is the ruins of Butrinti. Butrinti was an ancient city that prospered in the Roman era.

As for food, I would like to mention the grilled fish with salt and lemon sauce that is served in our coastal areas and the fried lamb of our inland areas. Our policy is to facilitate tourism through Albanian hospitality. We have about 5,000 Japanese tourists per year, a number that is likely to increase because of the successful cooperation between Albanian and Japanese tour operators. Japanese tourists can enter Albania without a visa. During the peak season in the Balkan Peninsula, the “Balkan Schengen” applies; this facilitates the free movement of tourists not only from Japan, but also from other part of the world.

Diplomatic relations between Albania and Japan date back to before the First World War. Albania declared its independence from the Ottoman Empire and Japan acknowledged its independence in 1922. Unfortunately the relationship was not developed fur-ther. Relations were restarted in 1987 and developed further when Albania became a democratic country and solidified its relationship with the opening of the Albanian Embassy in Japan in November 2005. Today Albania and Japan have intensive bilateral relations, through technical cooperation with the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency), by supporting each other in international organizations.

I see a lot of parallels between Albania and Japan. For example, we share the same geographical latitude, and the climate here for me is the same as home. Asa returned in October that year and has been liv-ing in Japan ever since. “I want to live in Japan per-manently, if possible. That’s as long as I can get hold of a visa. But I don’t want to talk about visas because it’s very difficult to get one as a manga artist,” she says, shrugging her shoulders. When she stayed in Japan for the second time, she lived in a shared house with others and attended a vocational school special-izing in graphic design. After studying abroad, he majored in geology and Japanese at a university in New Zealand, and after graduating, was selected for the JET Programme. He landed a job at the City Hall in Koshigaya City, Saitama Prefecture where he was put in charge of work relating to international exchange, but at the same time enrolled in the city hall skiing club and came to enjoy skiing with friends.
