La Semana Binacional de Salud (SBS) se ha convertido en una de las mayores movilizaciones de esfuerzos de las Américas, para mejorar la salud y el bienestar de los inmigrantes y migrantes más vulnerables de origen latinoamericano que viven en Estados Unidos y Canadá.

El tema de este año, “Camina Alegre por tu Salud” promueve un evento anual que consiste en una

serie de actividades de promoción y educación de la salud que incluye talleres informativos, canalización a servicios y a programas de seguro médico, así como exámenes básicos de detección gratuitos.

La Semana Binacional de Salud es solamente un primer paso en una serie de esfuerzos de cooperación entre los países de Norte y Latinoamérica para mejorar la salud de los migrantes.

underserved immigrants and migrants of Latin American origin living in the United States, and Canada.

This year theme, “Health First is Love” encompasses an annual two weeklong series of health promotion and

health education activities that include workshops, insurance referrals, and medical screenings.

La clausura De la SBS en Arkansas se llevará a cabo el día sábado 13 de octubre con un evento nacional sobre la Concientización del VIH/SIDA en la Comunidad Latina de Arkansas Central en el Centro Reto 4919 Baseline al frente de la Tienda Sin Fronteras de las 10am a las 3pm.

“Esta semana de actividades es posible gracias a la participación de una red de miles de voluntarios, agencias gubernamentales y organizaciones comunitarias que han hecho de la SBS su propia mission,” dijo el Consul de México en Little Rock, David Manuel Preciado Juarez.

Se cuenta con la

colaboración de distintas organizaciones de salud que darán información de servicios así como exámenes y vacunas gratuitos. Arkansas Human Development C con programas antitabaco, pruebas de SIDA, Arkansas NLAAD, National HIV Latino Aids Awareness Day, Healthy Smiles / Servicios dentales, ConnectCare, UAMS Head Start, Susan G. Entre los socios a nivel nacional se encuentran las Secretarías de Salud y de Relaciones Exteriores de México, los Ministerios de Relaciones Exteriores de Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Colombia, y Ecuador, el Instituto de los Mexicanos en el Exterior, y el Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social.

Este año la Semana Binacional de Salud se llevará a cabo del 2 la 5 de Octubre, 2010 en al menos 40 estados de la Unión Americana, y 3 provincias en Canadá, con la participación de las redes

consulares de los 7 países participantes, en Mexico se llevarán a cabo actividades en los estados con mayor migración internacional.

El año pasado la Semana Binacional de Salud obtuvo la mayor participación desde su inicio en 2001. Se estima que el año pasado 301,661 personas participaron en 3,941 actividades 6,586 agencias y 15,497 voluntarios participaron en la organización de las actividades bajo el liderazgo de 88 consulados de los 4 países organizadores, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador y Colombia.

Durante la Semana Binacional de Salud de este año, tendrá lugar también una campaña nacional de conscientización en los temas

de Autismo, Diabetes y Obesidad, VIH y SIDA, y Preparación para Casos de Emergencia.

The Binational Health Week is intended as a first step in a larger program of cooperation amongst North American and Central American countries to improve the health and well being of immigrant workers and their families.

“Binational Health Week events emerge from networks forged among volunteers, agencies and organizations working on migrant health issues and, in turn, foster ongoing collaboration,” said Arkansas Mexican Consul, David Manuel Preciado Juarez.

In Arkansas, the Mexican Consulate will be holding a free health fair on its grounds at t 3500 South University Avenue, Little Rock from

Monday, October 1st to Saturday, October 13th.

SPRINGDALE, AR - Governor Mike Beebe will deliver the keynote address at Hispanic Women’s Organization of Arkansas’(HWOA) 12th Annual Conference, What Is It That Unites U.S.? on October 5th, 2012 at the Jones Center in Springdale.

The conference will be an exploration of the human character and the ability people have to adapt, embrace and appreciate aspects of different cultural groups. “Our common search unites us and allows us to make positive changes through the celebration of education, culture and community,” said Margarita Solorzano, HWOA executive director.

“As Governor of a state that has experienced rapid growth in the diversity of its population, Governor Beebe is a champion of education and economic development. During his tenure, he has risen to many challenges, including guiding the state through a severe economic downturn. Arkansas’ balanced budget and improved educational attainment refl ect the principles of hard work that have distinguished Governor Beebe’s administration,” Solorzano added.

As a new immigrant destination state, Arkansas is now home to 186,050 Hispanics, according to the 2010 Census. These immigrants bring

new cultures to the region, adding richness to the lives of all residents,

as well as needs that the community has not previously had to address.

Two counties HWOA serves in Northwest Arkansas, Washington and Benton, have seen an increase of 150% in population over the past decade and are home to

65,741 Hispanics. Many Arkansas institutions were not equipped to

meet the needs of locals, much less the growing needs of people from diverse backgrounds.

The Governor’s participation will complement the conference objectives which are to further u n d e r s t a n d i n g of diversity and entrepreneurship, provide timely i n f o r m a t i o n ,

examine issues and promote community integration and leadership among all Arkansas residents as we continue the quest to fi nd What Is It That Unites U.S.?

SPRINGDALE, AR - El gobernador Mike Beebe pronunciará el discurso principal en la 12° Conferencia Anual de la Organización de Mujeres Hispanas de Arkansas (HWOA por sus siglas en ingles) ¿Qué Es Lo Que Nos Une? el día viernes 5 de octubre 2012 en el Jones Center de Springdale, Arkansas.

La conferencia será una exploración del carácter humano y las habilidades que la gente tiene para adaptarse, aceptar y apreciar aspectos de los diferentes grupos culturales. “Nuestra búsqueda común nos une y nos permite hacer cambios positivos por medio de la celebración de educación,

cultura y comunidad,” dijo Margarita Solorzano, directora ejecutiva de HWOA.

“Como gobernador de Arkansas, un estado que ha experimentado gran crecimiento en diversidad, el gobernador Beebe es un líder en la promoción de la educación y el desarrollo económico. Bajo su liderazgo, el estado ha respondido a los retos que incluyen atravezar una crisis económica. El balance del presupuesto y las mejoras del nivel educativo refl ejan el arduo trabajo que ha distinguido la administración

del gobernador Beebe,” ella agregó.

Como nuevo lugar de destino para los inmigrantes, el estado de Arkansas es ahora el hogar de 186,050 hispanos de acuerdo el Censo del 2010. Estos inmigrantes traen nuevas culturas a la región agregando riqueza a las vidas de todos los residentes, asi como necesidades que la comunidad no había visto antes.

Dos condados que HWOA sirve en el Noroeste de Arkansas, Benton y Washington, han visto un aumento del 150% en la

población durante la década pasada y ahora cuentan con 65,741 hispanos. Muchas instituciones en el estado no estaban habilitadas para llenar las necesidades de la gente local, mucho menos para satisfacer las necesidades de gente de diferentes grupos culturales.

La participación del Gobernador complementará los objetivos de la conferencia que son el aumentar el entendimiento de diversidad,

Nothing compares to joy of bringing a new life into the world. And when it comes to feeding that precious little person, nothing compares to a mother’s breast milk.

If you’re expecting a baby, or planning to have one, now is the time to decide whether you can and should breastfeed. Most experts agree that if you can, you should, and most mothers can.

Your breast milk comes

from your body, just like your baby. So it’s a special “recipe” to help your baby grow, develop and stay healthy. In fact, breastfeeding is better for both of you.

Breastfed babies are less likely to die of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS ). They tend to get sick less often than babies who are fed formula, and are less likely to get asthma. They are also less likely to become obese later in life. And your breast milk may even help boost your baby’s IQ.

Breastfeeding helps mothers too. Breastfeeding uses a lot of calories, so it can help you burn off that “baby weight.” It costs less than formula, and once you get started, it’s usually less trouble. It can help prevent postpartum depression, an illness that can make you feel sad, hopeless or fearful after childbirth. It can help protect you from breast or ovarian cancer later in life, and can help prevent osteoporosis (brittle bones).

Breastfeeding is natural

and healthy — but it isn’t always easy. Getting started is the hardest part, and the most important. Before you have your baby, tell your doctor that you want to breastfeed. Also, make sure the hospital nurses and staff know. Ask them to give you your baby as soon as they can after you give birth, and to help you get started breastfeeding. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or say you need help — many mothers do, and hospitals have special nurses who know how to work with

you and your baby to get breastfeeding off to a good start. Before you go home with your baby, ask for the telephone number of someone you can call if you have questions about breastfeeding after you leave the hospital.

Even if you have to go back to work, you should be able to keep breastfeeding. You’ll need to pump your milk during the day. You can rent or buy an automatic pump. Or, if you qualify for WIC (Special Supplemental

Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children), you might be able to get one free of charge.

Once you start breastfeeding, your baby will get the most benefi t if you keep going for at least six months. Some experts say a year is even better. But it doesn’t hurt you or your baby to keep breastfeeding even longer than a year. Remember, you only get one chance to give your baby the best start. And you are the only one who can!

of its Independence on September 16. In Little Rock thousands enjoyed the Mexican Independence Day Family Festival on Saturday,

September 15 on the River Market Pavillions. The celebration was entertained by The Rondalla of the University Autonomous of

Baja California (UABC) and the Band of the Federal Technical School Number 20 “El Nigromante” in Ensenada, Baja California.

The Mexican Independence Day is the largest and most important celebration for Mexican citizens and Hispanics of

Mexican origin living in the United States.

This is the sixth year that the Mexican Consulate

The event was held on Monday, September 24th featured Arkansas native Gerald Alley, President & CEO of Con-Real, LP, a full service construction and real estate company with a national presence.

Chamber Board Member Myron Jackson, The Design Group presented MED Week, served as master of

ceremonies for the lunch and presented awards to the following recipients: Little Rock Regional Minority Entrepreneur of the Year – Sam Carrasquillo (SC Roofing Windows and Siding). Sam set out with a dream to start his own business while he was just a teen and actualized that dream at the young age of 17. Now at the age of 29, he has built a

statewide roofing, windows and siding company that is one of the top in his industry. His company, which is the only EPA certifi ed fi rm in Arkansas, is still expanding and growing as Sam understands that the cornerstone of success is the quality of one’s work as well as providing 100% customer satisfaction.

WASHINGTON, DC - The Internal Revenue Service urges 2,900 Arkansas tax return preparers to immediately schedule their competency test or risk difficulty finding a date, time or location as the exam deadline nears next year

The Registered Tax Return Preparer test has been available since November 2011. Nationwide, more than 310,000 tax return preparers still need to pass the test before December 31, 2013. Tax professionals who are

Enrolled Agents, Certified Public Accountants, and attorneys are exempt from the test, as are certain non-signing preparers and those who do not prepare the Form 1040 serie.

The RTRP test is being administered by Prometric, Inc., which has 260 testing sites nationwide. However, if too many preparers delay, available seats will be scarce.

To learn more about the test or to begin the scheduling process, preparers should go to www.irs.gov/taxpros/tests.

The test is one phase of

a multi-year effort by the IRS to increase oversight of the tax professional industry and help ensure minimal competency levels among those who are paid tax return preparers. More than 60 percent of taxpayers use a tax preparer. Under the new rules, all professional tax return preparers must register with the IRS, obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN), and adhere to ethical standards.Certain preparers must also pass the new test and complete 15 hours of continuing education each year. For these preparers the

IRS created a new credential: Registered Tax Return Preparer. Starting January 1, 2014, only Registered Tax Return Preparers, Enrolled Agents, CPAs and attorneys will be authorized to prepare and sign individual tax returns.

Next year, the IRS will launch a public listing for taxpayers and others to confirm preparers with professional credentials and valid PTIN.

There are 5,843 return preparers from Arkansas registered with the IRS. Of

those, 2,949 must still pass the RTRP test. More than 110 Arkansas preparers already have taken the test and become Registered Tax Return Preparers.

The test is a 2 1⁄2 hour, timed exam. It must be taken at a Prometric site for control

purposes. There are 120 questions which cover Form 1040 tax preparation issues, individual tax law issues and ethics. Preparers must pay $116 fee for the exam. CPAs, EAs and attorneys already must pass tests for their credentials.

LITTLE ROCK, AR - The office of Governor Mike Beebe, the Arkansas National Guard and the Little Rock Racial and Cultural Diversity Commission celebrated Hispanic Heritage

Month at the Heifer Village on September 19.

Monsignor Scott Friends a strong advocate for the Arkansas’ Hispanic and Latino community served as the Keynote Speaker.

Lieutenant Cibeles Ramirez Rodriguez did the

introductions. Lieutenant Ramirez Rodriguez is the first Hispanic female helicopter pilot in the ArkansasNational Guard and she is one of six female helicopter pilots in the Guard right now. She is also the only minority female and

one of only three Hispanic pilots in the Arkansas Army National.

The celebration was well attended by community leaders, students and military offi cers. Governor Mike Beebe opened the celebration.
