The Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury shares some insights

Professor K.C.Chan, Hong Kong’s Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, shared with us his views on the public finances and Hong Kong’s economic development on March 2, 2010.

Professor Chan suggested that after last year’s global credit crunch, the world has begun to focus more closely on the Asian market. The government is maintaining favorable fiscal policies, and with the rapid development of China’s economy, it is expected that more international financial institutions will look to develop their Hong Kong operations. This should, in turn, bring ample opportunities for business and accounting graduates. He encouraged students to be well equipped and to improve their language skills to meet the challenges and exploit the opportunities ahead. ProfessorChan’s talkwas

Welfare Chief and experts discuss minimum wage legislation at HKBU forum

The Department of Management of School of Business hosted the forum on “Meeting the Challenges: Implementation of the Minimum Wage Legislation in Hong Kong” on April 22, 2010. Mr. Cheung Kin-chung (right), Secretary for Labour and Welfare of the HKSAR Government, and Professor Ng Ching-fai, President and Vice-chancellor of Hong Kong Baptist University, officiated the forum. Mr. Lam Woon-kwong, Chairperson of the Equal Opportunities Commission and 6 other experts from different sectors have been invited to be speakers at the forum. They have come together to scrutinize the arguments and concerns both in favour of and against legis lat ing for minimum wages.

Speaking at the forum, Mr. Cheung Kin-chung said the minimum wage legislation needed to provide a balance between employers and employees. It had to guarantee a reasonable salary without impacting the employment rates of lower-paid workers, while taking into consideration possible negative effects on the mobility of the labour market. Mr. Cheung also said the Provisional Minimum Wage Commission was still determining the wage levels and the government had yet to have any preconceived ideas.

The forum was organised and prepared by Year 3 students of the Department of Management. Professor Randy Chiu, Chairman of Organising Committee of the forum, thanked the effort and time the students committed and stressed that this is a good opportunity for students to express their concerns about the community, and to put their professional knowledge to meaningful use.

Master of Science in Applied Economics

Information technology revolutions, globalisation and the rising economic prowess of emerging economies – especially China – have led to drastic changes in global economy. Understanding the economic mechanism of these changes will help businesses, public organisations as well as individuals make the right decisions. Practitioners in the commercial sector and BBA students will benefit from having a broader view of the functioning of the economy, which will complement their professional training.

The new MSc in Applied Economics programme has 3 core elements: advanced economic theories, applied analyses, and the Chinese economy. The objective of the programme is to train competent applied economists and potential theoretical researchers through an optimal balance between advanced theoretical training and applied analyses of the real world. We endeavour to ensure that our graduates are able to analyse economic issues relevant to their work and develop strategies to cope with the changing economic environment.

The programme will commence in September 2010.
