January begins the year,

But very soon New Year is here.

New Year: the Chinese New Year

In February each girl and boy

Is heard to say, ‘Kung Hei Fat Choy.’

恭喜發財

In March the Christians sing and pray

To celebrate their Easter Day.

Christian: the person who believes

God

pray: to speak to God

We must in April graves upkeep,

Flowers plant and headstones sweep.

grave: the place in the ground where

a dead person is buried

upkeep: look after

May may bring the first typhoon,

With terrifying fear and doom.

terrify: frighten greatly

doom: destruction; death

On dragon boats in joyful June,

They bang the drums for wet Wat Yuen.

Then as the warmer days float by,

We start to melt in hot July.

melt: be heated until turning to liquid

float: drift slowly

And seek the shade in many ways,

As August brings the hotter days.

shade: shadow

September sees the lanterns’ light,

As high above, the moon shines bright.

October comes and Halloween,

When ghosts and goblins may be seen.

November comes. The year is old.

The nights are long and we get cold.

Then in December, days of cheer

Bring to an end another year.
