Human rightsHuman Rights Day, from10/12/1948, is the UN's major flagday. The Universal Declaration OfHuman Rights was signed then. In1978 it became virtually law herewith the UN ICCPR and ICESCRbinding treaty ratification.
An anomaly exists with the NewZealand Bill of Rights Act though. Itchanges the wording of article 5 ofthe Declaration and Article 7 of thebinding ICCPR Covenant of Rights.Inhuman treatment and punish-ment is not specifically banned, as itshould be. “Disproportionatelysevere”, misleadingly replaces it.
Punishment might be propor-tionately severe for a personconvicted of a shocking crime thatcould, nevertheless, be veryinhuman. It can happen in NewZealand's worst prisons, accordingPeter Williams QC, former head ofthe Howard League of PenalReform. We can visit the LevinPeace Gate to mark the day and mywww.boract.webs.com for theanomaly.

Privet problemAs returning ‘Levinittes’ we areastounded to see the abundance ofPrivet trees all over the place.
Unfortunately they just spreadlike wildfire and crowd out native
trees. They are most certainly amajor cause of the excess hayfevercases in this area too. In the Bay ofPlenty, our previous residence, itwas classified a noxious weed and
every effort was made to eliminateit and replace it with somethingmore suitable. Would it not makecommon sense to follow thisexample, therefore making lifemore allergy-free for everyone?

Rubbish blameIn her letter to the ChronicleDecember 10, Christina Patonblames the council for the fact thatpeople have been dumping rubbishillegally.
She might be quite right that thecouncil should provide a betterservice, and should review the SolidWaste rate etc. But by targeting thecouncil, she is effectivelyexonerating those who havedumped the rubbish. Those whohave dumped the rubbish on thedunes have behaved selfishly andunreasonably.
We don’t know why they did it.Was it because they couldn’t affordthe fee? Or because they were toomean to pay the fee? Or that theyare just plain selfish, and dumped itin the nearest place, or are theyvandals?
So, the council might be wrongbut let’s not lose sight of the fact thatthose who have dumped rubbishhave behaved in a selfish andunreasonable manner.

Robyn feels like new woman
WOW, look at her now. The before and afterresults of a three-month makeover, forShannon woman Robyn Smith.
By TANYAWOOD
BY THE NUMBERSIn just three months, following acustomised diet and exercise plan, RobynSmith lost:• 22.5kg in weight• 16.5 per cent of body fat• 16cm off her chest• 27cm off her waist• 27.5cm off her hips
Wow, just look at her now.Robyn Smith's determination to lose weight
and feel better about herself won the mum offour a 12-week, life-changing makeover worth$3000, offered by Levin-based businesses SkinMedic Ltd, Fitstop Health and Fitness Centre,NV Training and Elegance Laser and SkinClinic. That was four months ago.
It was an almost unrecognisable womanthat walked through the doors of Fitstop lastweek to applause and cheers from family andfriends gathered to see the ‘new’ Robyn and totoast her success.
Robyn, complete with new hairstyle — apresent from the judges especially for theevening celebration, said the whole experiencehad been “just awesome”.
“I feel fabulous, confident about life andmuch happier in myself. Everyone has justbeen blown away by the changes in me andeven people in the gym who I don’t know say‘you look fantastic’ and that’s so nice to hear.”
The 12-week package included a customisedexercise and nutrition plan — six days a weekhitting the treadmill and weights for an hourand a complete change of diet.
“After the first four kilos came off in aweek, it kept me going, I told myself I can dothis,” said Robyn, who works as a FairfieldSchool teacher aid. And for a girl who neverwore face cream, Robyn is now a convert.
Weekly beauty treatments to even out herskin tone have left Robyn “rapt” with theimprovements. “I think I look younger, anyway.”
Robyn is determined to keep up her newlifestyle, with just the odd drink.
“That was a biggie, giving up alcohol but Iwas determined to do it and look forward to adrink to celebrate afterwards.”
Dr Wynand Louwe, medical director of SkinMedic Ltd, said not many people were aware oftheir own wellness and fitness. “That was thereason for the competition, to give someonethat chance and to see the transformation forthemselves. We [judges] were impressed withRobyn from the start and we made the rightchoice. The results are great.”

The parade goes on
By TANYAWOOD
Up to 1000 people came out to enjoy theShannon Christmas Parade and Carnivalon Saturday, especially the children wholined up to get a present from Santa andMrs Claus in their special Shannongrotto.
However, about eight weeks ago itcould have been a different story. Therewas no organising committee and noparade planned. Shannon resident NinaPilkington says she wasn’t about to letthat happen. She stepped into the breachand, as she says, “tapped people on theshoulder to help”.
This year’s parade took a differentroute, along Grey Street, while thecarnival took place at the ShannonDomain, with plenty of activities, including a potato picking competition, sheep shearing demonstration, bouncycastle, mini train rides, children’s talentquest and a concert. There were also 60stalls with food and other goods to sell.
A three-hour ‘cushion concert’,including Shannon School band, CravenNoble, The Stampede Variety Club from
Levin and Tama K Trio proved hugelypopular, according to Nina. It was theinaugural tribute concert to Shannonresident Bernie Lynn who had organisedmany parades and died just before lastyear’s parade.
Nina says the plan next year is to takethe parade back onto the main shoppingstreet but keep the carnival at the domainwhere they could attract more stalls andactivities.
“I would like to put out a huge thankyou to everyone who supported the event. It was a huge crew that put this together.”She said without the financial support ofHorowhenua District Council and localbusinesses, funding activities so theywere free for children, the event could nothave happened. Nina also wanted toacknowledge the community groups,Shannon Progressive Association, OldFolks Club and all the volunteers on theday.
The children’s talent quest was won bydance crew The Velvets with solo singersRangimarie Hauiti second and ElizabethLiddell third.■ More photos page 21

Horowhenua’s Pink Ladies SupportGroup is officially open to anyonetouched by breast cancer.
“In Horowhenua this year 34 womenand one man have been diagnosed withbreast cancer,” group founder MargaretMartin said.
“This year I co-ordinated the nationalPink Ribbon (Breast Cancer) appeal forHorowhenua and became aware weneeded a support group in this area.”
Money collected at the national appealis used to continue work by the NewZealand Breast Cancer Foundationthrough life saving early detectioncampaigns, research into bettertreatments and support for women withthe disease. Margaret wanted to dosomething which would be specificallylocal, knowing that Horowhenua’sdonations to the national appeal doubledthose made in 2013.
“Horowhenua people identify with us,so many have offered their help andsupport, it is a truly amazing project to beinvolved in,” Margaret said. “I want tothank everyone.”
Beautiful baskets are being created, with most of the input from the generosityof people and businesses in Horowhenua.
They will be given to anyone newlydiagnosed with breast cancer.
“We have set up a buddy system foranyone diagnosed with breast cancer,”Margaret said.
“The buddy has gone through breastcancer and is happy to talk through it if ithelps. They give their [new] buddy abasket full of goodies to brighten theirday.”
The group’s first official meeting isgoing to be at Te Takere on February 17and will be the third Tuesday of eachmonth thereafter.■ For information contact Margaret MartinPh 368-6050 or Colleen Khull Ph 368-9075.

Appeal supports Veterans Arms
Levin Home for War Veterans is seekingcommunity support for the resident’sVeterans Arms club.
The RSA-like club was established by agroup of residents earlier this year. Homemanager Joanna Thomson says theclub is very popular with residents andtheir family and friends. But she explainsthe home needs support from thecommunity for it to gain momentum.
“Donations to our December Trumpeterappeal will help us preserve the home’sAnzac memorabilia and add to theexperience and environment of theVeterans Arms.”
She explains that the Veterans Arms hasbecome a hub of Anzac spirit in theshort time it’s been operating.
“Like the establishment of the ReturnedServices Association in 1916, theVeterans Arms aims to provide supportand comfort for former service men andwomen, and all of our residents,” saysJoanna.
“One of the great things about theVeterans Arms is that it is governed bythe residents. Our residents make allthe choices about the club from how itoperates and membership, through to
individual choices about who they inviteand how long they stay.”
Levin Home for War Veterans wasestablished in 1959 as a placespecifically for those who had returnedfrom war. Today the home continuesto offer support to former service menand women, as well as those from otherwalks of life.
Today, Levin Home continues to have astrong presence of war veterans. Thereare seven World War Two Veterans livingat the home and 70 per cent of residentsare returned service men and women.
“Levin Home is a truly unique home andwe’re extremely proud of our history, and future, supporting service men andwomen. And, I think the community isreally proud that we have this facilityhere in Horowhenua.”
Joanna says the home is grateful to thesignificant support it gets from the localcommunity and further afield.

Tops and tabs help kids
LEVIN’S Tracey Larsen wants people tosave their aluminium screw tops from winebottle caps to raise money for Kidney Kids.
KAN TABSThe Lions Club of New Zealand Kan Tabs for Kidney Kids project started life in a small shed atKoputaroa School in 1999 under the auspices of Koputaroa School principal at the time TerryHemmingsen, a Lions District Governor. Lions estimates in excess of 45,000kgs of aluminium hasbeen recycled andmore than $100,000 raised. Levin Waiopehu Lions Club has sent in excess of$15,000 to the charity.Kan Tabs for Kidney Kids Facts:• The funds raised do NOT pay for dialysis. They are sent to Kidney Kids of NZ to support and assistchildren with kidney disease including those children who have end stage kidney disease andrequire treatment such as dialysis and/or a transplant, affecting about 1300 families nationwide.• There are about 3,330 tabs to a kilogram.• The value of 3 Kan Tabs amounts to approximately 1 cent - every little helps.
By TANYAWOOD
Don’t throw out your wine bottle screwtops, they still have an important role toplay. The Lions Club of New Zealand hasbeen raising funds from the sale ofaluminium can tabs and, more latterlyaluminium wine bottle screw tops, tometal recyclers, raising money for theKidneyKids of NZ charity since 1999.
Although the initiative originated as aproject at Koputaroa School, there areplenty of people unaware of the Kan Tabsfor Kidney Kids project, according toLevin resident Tracey Larsen.
Tracey herself only heard about it ayear ago through a friend and thought itwas a fantastic idea.
“Wine bottle caps just go in the binusually, so why not put them towards areally good cause in aid of children?” shesaid.
She has since roped in the help ofFatboyz Bar, Cobb & Co and TheWheelhouse Bar in Levin, to keep theirwine bottle caps and act as collectionpoints for customers who bring in theirs.
“I haven’t kept a tally, I don’t have thetime to count them all but there’s been acouple of bin loads so far. It’s such asimple thing for everyone to do.”
Tracey is hoping more local cafes, barsand restaurants will come on board.
Levin Waiopehu Lions Club secretaryRay Armstrong said it was fantastic thatpeople still wanted to help.
Anyone who would like to support thecause can drop their aluminium winebottle caps and any other type ofaluminium can tab off at Fatboyz Bar,Durham St, Levin. If other cafes, bars orrestaurants would like to help, pleaseemail the Chronicle [email protected] with your contactdetails, which will be passed on to Tracey.

Ken a power forgood in Levin
KEN Gurney of Sports World Levinbelieves in supporting the community heloves.
By PETER FRANKLIN
Businessman Ken Gurney, of SportsWorld Levin, gets a huge thumbs up fromhis staff, Sue, Hannah and Gerald, as agreat employer and communitysupporter.
One of the district’s longest servingretailers, Ken has been one of the mostforward thinking and encouragingcharacters one could wish to meet.
He gives his support freely to a widerange of people and projects, includingmotivating other businesses to step up tothe mark and promote themselves.
During the 2013 Rugby World Cup, Kenworked hard getting businesses to dressup their shop windows and add a bit ofcolour and flair to the town.
However, it is supporting local peoplethat has been one of Ken’s strongestpassions.
Emma Hicks, a former staff member, can testify to that. As a volunteerfirefighter in the Levin brigade, Emmacould be called away at any time when thefire siren sounded.
She went with Ken’s blessing becausesomeone was in trouble. She was alsogiven time to fundraise for a trip to theworld canoe polo championships duringwork time.
Ken also encouraged Sue Wilks, acurrent staff member, to wear her StJohn's uniform to work during a St Johnfundraising appeal, and helped localsportswomen Michaela Curtis andCathryn Finlayson to achieve their goalsof representing New Zealand in hockey.Ken was behind the push to get theannual Levin Christmas parade back onthe main street.
Ken believes in the community. Heshows it whenever he can, donatingprizes for groups and organisations from
Sports World Levin and, more often thannot, he can be found talking to otherretailers putting ideas forward that willget the town buzzing with excitement.Ken Gurney has always said, “I do thesethings because I love the people and thedistrict and I’m a strong believer in both.”

Let’s hope for bettergrowing in New YearDiggingin
WALLY RICHARDSThe year is quickly drawing to a closewith Christmas closer than ever, making it a very busy festive time formany people.
Without further ado I would like towish all my readers a very happy festiveseason and a better gardening year forthe New Year.
This will be my last weekly article tilljust after the New Year, so you can havea rest without me bending your ear.
Saying that I will be available on the0800 466-464 number if you have anygardening problems or things of interestto share. Alternatively you can email meon [email protected]
It has been an interesting year forgardening, milder than normal winter, poor spring and not a great start tosummer.
Likely in the New Year we will getsome better growing conditions.
During the year I think the highlightswere reports from gardeners who placedNeem Tree Granules under their citrustrees to clean up insect problems in thetrees. So simple and easy to do withoutout all that spraying. (No harm on theenvironment other than the pests.)
I wrote earlier in the year about usingmy Secret Strawberry Food inconjunction with Mycorrcin to obtainsome super big strawberries with goodflavour. Several gardeners have
reported excellent results from usingthe two products and getting a goodnumber of extra big strawberries.
The poor spring weather this seasonhas meant that many plants have notpreformed as expected. A few weeks agosomeone wrote to me about strangeweather and hail stones with 25 timesthe allowed limit of aluminium indrinking water. This also applies to ourgardens, as plants are greatly affected byaluminum toxicity, inhibiting rootgrowth which slows or stops plantgrowth.
I have had recent reports of thishappening in pasture and food crops.
Combine that with low levels of directsunlight, caused by either clouds or hazepreventing the sun’s rays from directlyreaching plants, and this causes leafcolour to darken more than normal andstretching of plants making greaterdistance between leaves.
This is not normal and I would like toknow what is going on as plants ideallyrequire six or more hours of directsunlight at this time of the year eachday.
During the year a number ofdangerous chemicals used in the homegarden market were either removed orare in the process of being removed.Others are likely to follow, removedsooner rather than later, so our honeybees and bumble bees have a betterchance of survival.
I think next year is going to be veryinteresting.
Have a happy Christmas and NewYear, drive carefully and stay healthy.

CHARGES INCREASECharges have increased for theHorowhenua afterhours medical clinicheld at Horowhenua Health Centre.
The increases came into effect onMonday following a review after 12months of operation. The afterhoursservice operates through a collaborationof five General Practices in Horowhenuaand is available seven days a week at theHealth Centre.
“The service is proving popular withHorowhenua people but has been on aknife edge financially,” said SandraLester, general manager for the PHOPractices.
“These (fee) changes help to ensure theAfterhour’s Clinic for Horowhenua issustainable over the longer term. Withoutthis increase we would either need toreduce the hours of operation or reducestaffing, neither of which the Practicerepresentatives wished to do.”
Dr David Le Page, medical director forHorowhenua Community Practice, wantsto stress afterhours care is not meant tobe a convenience service.
“Some people are using the afterhoursclinic for health issues that are best seenby their regular General Practice team,”said Dr Le Page.
“Afterhours is the backup service thatshould help people avoid heading to thehospital Emergency Department if theyare seen in time locally.”
He appreciates it is a fine line. “We donot want people ending up at the hospitalbecause they did not access either carefrom their General Practice team orAfterhours Clinic,” he said. “Afterhoursis a service to meet a person’s needurgently, something that can’t wait untilthe next day.”

For backyard astronomers who are usingbinoculars, there is plenty to see thismonth. Orion, which is in the eastern sky,is best viewed from 10pm onwards, onmoonless nights. In the eastern sky is alsoSirius and Betelgeuse, two very largesuns that twinkle different coloursthrough the binoculars. In the westernsky is the orange glow of Mars, alsovisible to the naked eye. In the northernsky is the Seven Sisters.
Satellites are frequently seen objectsin the night sky sometimes mistaken foraircraft.
On Monday the International SpaceStation (ISS) passed over Levin atapproximately 4.21am, seen for threeminutes, and again over Levin skies thefollowing morning, a little later at 5.07amtracking to the south east.

Foxton’s historic AllSaints church had a veryimportant, and possiblyhistory-making, visit fromthe Anglican Bishop ofWellington, the RightReverend JustinDuckworth.
Bishop Duckworth, known for his trademarkdreadlock hairstyle, waspart of a Pilgrimage/Hikoicelebrating thebicentennial year sincethe first preaching of thegospel (te rongopai) inAotearoa New Zealand.
Christian beginningsin New Zealand areassociated with theengagement of Ruatara,Hongi Hika and otherMaori leaders and localiwi, with the ReverendSamuel Marsden, missionaries and theirfamilies from theAnglican ChurchMissionary Society.
The bicentenary markssignificant foundationaldevelopments for NewZealand, including thedeveloping relationshipsbetween Maori andPakeha, starting points forthe missionary outreachof church, the firstEuropean settlements, birth of the first Europeanchildren in New Zealandand the first formal schooland early attempts atMaori literacy.
This month the Parishof Shannon-Foxton,together with Tikanga
Maori, made aPilgrimage/Hikoi ofCelebration beginning atTe Rangi Marie, Rangiotu. The group of more than 60people then visited theoriginal site of theTurongo Church inHimatangi Block Road asit was the earliest churchin this area. The churchfell into disrepair but wasresurrected andrededicated in the 1930s.
In 1965 it was movedfrom Moutoa to its currentsite at Poutu Marae,Shannon.
Bishop Duckworth wasnot the first Bishop ofWellington to visit theChurch built in 1869 —The Bishop of Wellington, the Rt Rev. H.W. Bainesofficiated there in 1969.
All Saints' Church,Foxton was the Hikoi’sfinal destination.Reverend Val Barberwelcomed the visitors andconducted an openingprayer. A celebratoryshared lunch was heldwith Bishop Duckworthwho remained in Foxtonfor the rest of the day.

YOUR VIEWS
Great serviceI have experienced really good servicefrom Te Waiora, Foxton, over the time ithas been open and before, from the samestaff that have shifted into their new rolesat our lovely new health centre.
I had to call in without an appointmentto get a medical issue dealt with. It waslater in the afternoon when I walked inand talked with the receptionist. I wasoffered exceptional service with a nursetesting for infection, a script done andsigned by the duty doctor and I hadtreatment for it after filling it with thepharmacy before business closed for theevening.
I have found the service I received to beof a high standard and all the staff havebeen welcoming and very friendly. Yes weknow there is long wait for non-urgentmatters if you want to be seen by aparticular doctor, but if you have anurgent matter you will be seen. I love thebetter parking and the nicer waitingrooms and comfortable chairs.
I know the staff are doing their verybest to give the best service they can whilecoping with the very high demand in thisdistrict. A new building on its own doesnot make it the best and it is the staff whowork tirelessly with a lack of permanentfull-time doctors having to juggle rostersand serve an area of high need that Iwould like to give personal thanks to.
For those out there who are frustratedwith the way it is, please spare a thoughtfor those that continually do their best tomake up for shortfalls in funding and
doctors.SUE WERNER

FlaxmuseumFoxton is said to have the only FlaxStripping Museum in the southern hemi-sphere and thanks is due to Messrs TonyHunt, Huck Baird and Ron Evans whohave just given their time and energy incarrying out vital maintenance on theworking machinery in the museum.
It is interesting to note that thesegentlemen include members of the WildlifeFoxton Trust and the Save Our RiverTrust. People who care about Foxton.
Between 1869 and 1973 there were manyflax mills in Foxton. At one time 50 millswere operating within 10 miles of the town.Sadly manmade material squeezed out thenatural product so all we have left is amuseum manned by volunteers hoping toattract tourism. Fortunately we have justhad some enthusiastic young men seekingto learn about flax stripping.
Foxton is a superb flax growing areaand today there is a growing internationalindustry in Flax Seed Oil, which is adietary supplement high in Omega 3 andbeneficial to our health as well as being agreat cooking oil.
Maybe an opportunity exists here for anentrepreneur to develop this business.Foxton surely need more businesses andthere would be plenty of support forth-coming.

Barrel organ has colourful history
LIKE a pianola, Sarah Harper feeds musicinto the beautiful pipe organ restored byhusband Jim.
THIS barrel organ was made in 1880 in France and restored in New Zealand in the21st century by Foxton’s Jim Harper.
JIM Harper with a smaller organ he has restored and sometimes sets up outsidethe Museum of Audio and Visual Technology to the delight of passers by.
By FRANKIEWEBB
Foxton’s Jim Harper is a man of manytalents.
He purchased an 1880 French barrelorgan in a very poor state of repair and hasbreathed new life into the beautiful work ofart.
French organ maker AlexandreGasparini built the organ, which wasconverted to ‘book operation’ in the early1890s.
At the turn of the century, or shortlyafter, the organ found its way toAmsterdam and it worked hard to earn itskeep playing most days in the city’s streets.
It was at that time owned and operatedby the draaiorgel company, G. Perlee andCo. The company still has the masters formany books made for the organ in the1930s.
The organ fell silent when street organswere banned in 1942 by the Germanoccupying forces. Sadly many streetorgans did not survive World War II.Many, along with their cardboard musicbooks, became victims of the time, beingburnt as fuel due to severe shortages.
This lucky organ returned to the streetsof Amsterdam after the war to delightaudiences for many years before being soldto a Mr Vader who operated a children’scarousel. The organ was set up toaccompany it.
In the 1960s the organ was again soldand sent to the United States where it hadseveral different owners. Within a decadeits condition had deteriorated to the pointof no longer being able to be played. Spiedby Jim Harper, the tired old lady arrived inNew Zealand in August 2001 and thenbegan a labour of love.
The organ is now as good as the day shewas made and totally authentic in everyway. Jim wheels her out for special eventsto the delight of anyone lucky enough to bein earshot.

LOOKING BACK
BURNT to the ground and rebuilt, Whyte’s Hotel facade as it wasrecreated after a fire in 1918 and remains today as the facade ofFoxton New World.
Local historian and retiredteacher Tony Hunt shares hisknowledge on the history ofFoxton and it’s buildings. Thismonth he looks at what is nowjust a facade, but Whyte’s Hotelwas an important part of Foxtonin its heyday.
The local Historical Societyreceived a bible from adescendant of the Whyte family, original owners of the buildingnow occupied by New World.
The bible is dated 1876 andrecords births, deaths andmarriages in the family.
Andrew James and MaryAnne Whyte moved to Foxton inthe late 1860s where they became‘Mine Hosts’ at the White HartHotel, renamed Manawatu, around 1870. There are somerecords that say Whyte was at aFamily Hotel in Avenue Road butI have not found any mention ofthis elsewhere. By then Cook hadrenamed his Adelaide Hotel inMain Street to the Family so that
is probably thesource ofconfusion.
The Whytesobviously feltFoxton coulddo with itsthird hotelwhen in 1876they openedthe one known
as Whytes Hotel (now NewWorld) in Main Street. Jamesdied in 1882 and Jane carried onthe business. Later J R Stanselltook over the hotel andeventually bought it from Mary, who passed away in 1908.
The hotel became well knownas the local depot for Cobb and CoCoaches that connected the townwith the railway at Shannon. The area that is now the NewWorld car park was used for thestables.
In 1906 Stansell sold out toEaston and Austin, landownersfrom Moutoa. The sale draggedon through the courts after
Stansell's claim that all the landthat made up the section was notincluded in the sale. This claim
was eventually dismissed.Fires then came on the scene.
The first, in 1912, destroyed all
the shops north of the hotel. Thesecond, in 1918, destroyed thehotel. The result was that theadjoining Moutoa Building andEaston's Hotel were rebuilt inbrick to conform with the by-lawthat had been introduced after1912. If you look at the brickfacade of New World you will seethe building was named Easton'sHotel, but locals kept with theoriginal “Whytes Hotel” to theend.
The rooms above the shops inthe Moutoa Building were theaccommodation area for thehotel.
The town is most fortunatethe facade was kept when theNew World building wasconstructed, as Whyte’s Hotelwas an integral part of the townand not just for the imbibing ofalcoholic beverages.
The bible and its familyinformation will ensure theWhyte family will find apermanent place in Foxton'sarchives.

The private collection of 28thMaori Battalion artefacts areon display at the CastletownMotel on State Highway 1 inFoxton. It is open to thepublic during normalbusiness hours, andmostweekends. Foxton womanAdele Parson has beenbuilding on a collection thatstarted with family relics andnow hasmany hundreds ofirreplaceable items, whichhave been donated or loaned.

Founder of the 28th MaoriBattalion memorial collectionat Foxton, Adele Parson, engaged Ingo Schleuss toproduce a generic flag to beflown for the first time on AnzacDay 2009.
The collection was originallyhoused in the Tram Station Cafein Main Street.
The special flag, sanctionedby the New Zealand DefenceForce, flew for importantoccasions on the village greenflagpole.
Earlier this year the cafeclosed and the collection movedto the Castletown Motel on StateHighway 1.
Mrs Parson wasdisappointed to leave theflagpole behind.
“I kept the flag carefullyfolded with the intention of oneday buying a pole so it could fly
again,” Mrs Parson toldHorowhenua Chronicle lastmonth.
The story ran in the
November Foxton section andwithin a few hours of the paperhitting the streets, Mrs Parsonhad received two offers.
“I couldn’t believe it whenlocal builder Art Cherrydropped off a flag pole the daythe paper came out,” MrsParson said.
“Then Brent Reid fromShannon contacted me offeringanother flag pole.”
Local concrete contractorMerv Bishop from Foxton MiniMix came along to pourconcrete he donated.
“I’m extremely grateful to allconcerned,” Mrs Parson said.
“I had been looking at twopoles on the net, one was inTauranga, the other Rotorua. Itwas going to be such a missionto get them back to Foxton, Ithink I would have given up.”
A blessing has been held andthe distinctive red flag is flyingagain.

We are working with Strengthening Families, Horowhenua District Council, Otaki Birthrightand NZ Police as well the Radio Network and have set up project teams in each of Otaki,Horowhenua and Waiopehu Colleges. We’re serious about making a difference and our goalis to fill both Levin and Otaki Subway Stores with Christmas presents for these kids in ourcommunity and Christmas food goodies suitable for putting into family hampers.
You are assured your generosity will hit the mark as we work with appropriate Governmentand Community Agencies to ensure these gifts and food hampers get to the people whoneed it most, in our community.
We have engaged the youth in our town and they are embracing this project. To see theCollege pupils determined to make a difference to this situation is a fantastic reflection onthe young people in our community, so help them make a difference.

Long shines in eventing
TEAM LONG: Pam (not pictured) andClive Long are delighted with thesuccess of daughter Abigail at the NewZealand National 3 Day Event JuniorChampionship title riding BMWAdvokaat.
By FRANKIEWEBB
Manakau equestrian Abigail Long, 18, andBMW Advokaat (Hugo) claimed the NewZealand National Three Day Event JuniorChampionship at the country’s premierhorse trial in Puhunui, Auckland.
The international event, offering ninecategories, attracted entries from formerWorld Champion Blyth Tait, OlympiansMatthew Grayling and Heelan Tompkins.
Long has enjoyed a successful seasonleading up to Puhunui, the biggest win ofher career.
Riding 15-year-old BMW Advokaat(Hugo), Long claimed the CNC1* (Star) atPuhunui last year.
“It was good to be able to make that stepup this year,” Long said. “We had twostarts at 2** level, finishing eighth at Taupoand winning in Wellington, I knew hewould be good for the 1* (Star) at Puhunui.”
Getting through the dressage phase firstwas upper most on Long’s mind. Thepressure was on to pull out all the stopsunder the judges’ scrutiny at aninternational event.
“Hugo felt full of beans but composedhimself when it counted,” Long said. “Witha few points to spare, it’s always a goodfeeling going into the cross country phase.”
The long crosscountry course wasn’t aconcern. “Hugo is really fit and aftercompeting 2**, the fences looked easier,”Long said. “Andrew (jump coach AndrewScott) walked the course with me and thathelped heaps.”
Finishing without a fault, Long was in acomfortable position on 57.5 penalties goinginto the showjumping phase ahead ofsecond placegetter Jackson Bovill andVisionnaire on 61.2. A disastrousshowjumping round saw Bovill clock up 16jump faults taking the combination wellout of contention.
It was Canterbury rider Lucy Turnerand Tallyho Mystic sitting second to lastafter the dressage on 67.8 who issued thechallenge after finishing the crosscountrywithout adding further penalties, and then
became the only combination not to fault inthe show jumping.
Long didn’t lose focus and, despitetaking a rail in the showjumping, finishedwith a six-point lead to emerge the 2014Champion. The win extends her topranking by 51 points in the New ZealandYoung Rider Eventing series. Strokes not the end of sports successBOCCIA
Boccia is a target sport, similar to lawn bowls, the aim is tothrow, roll, kick or use a ramp to get your balls closer to the white‘jack’ than your opponents balls. Boccia is not only for aspiringelite athletes, those who use a wheelchair for mobility or withother impairments can play up to paralympic level. There are fourclassifications depending on the level of mobility. BISfed (BocciaInternational Sports Federation) has overall control of allinternational boccia competitions.
By FRANKIEWEBB
Winning a sports trophy is anachievement for any team butmore so if you are a strokesurvivor.
The Levin Stroke Supportgroup fielded a team of players atthe Interclub Boccia Challengeand took top honours.
“We thrashed the otherteams,” chairman of the LevinStroke Support group, IvanMorgan, said. “Some areas hadmore than one team so they hadthe advantage.”
While the Levin group iscompetitive, they also put anemphasis on fun.
“The ball doesn’t have a bias,”Ivan said. “It goes with thecontour of the floor, which can
change depending ontemperature, dampness in airetc. It can produce someinteresting results, our ball hasbeen known to sneak into the looon occasion.”
This wasn’t the first year theLevin stroke folk claimed theBoccia trophy.
“We have had it on a fewoccasions before,” Ivan said.“We’re always very proud whenwe bring it home.”
Alan Greenfield, who isconfined to a wheelchair, hasbeen a winning team member anumber of times.
Boccia has finished for the
year but anyone who would liketo join in the New Year iswelcome to contact Ivan Morgan,

Reward for Shannon rugby stalwartBy TANYAWOOD
SHANNON Rugby Football Clubchairman Dean File picks up thenational award for CharlesMonro NZ Rugby Volunteer ofthe Year at last week’sSteinlager Awards in Auckland.
Shannon’s Dean File has just hadthe biggest week of his rugbycareer.
The chairman of the ShannonRugby Football Club was namedthe Charles Monro NZ RugbyVolunteer of the Year at lastweek’s Steinlager Awards inAuckland.
When the HorowhenuaChronicle spoke to him the dayafter, he was still pinchinghimself. In fact he seemed just asexcited about meeting some ofthe All Black greats, past andpresent.
“The whole evening wasoverwhelming, amazing, I wasquite blown away by the wholething,” File said.
He was told four weeks beforethe awards ceremony that he hadmade the final three. (There are atotal of 26 rugby unions, whichcan each submit up to threenominations.) The week beforethe awards, cameramen were inShannon capturing File on video,as he said, “just mucking aboutdown at the club, like you do”,shown on two massive floor to
ceiling screens at the ceremony.Hearing his name called out
as the winner was an incrediblemoment. “All of a sudden I’m onstage in front of about 700 people
looking at me and I’m thinking‘holey, moly you actually havewon this thing’.” Afterwards hewas taken off to one side for hisinterview with AndrewMulligan.
“[Live] TV coverage musthave been about an hour delayedI guess, just going by the time myphone started going crazy withtexts.”
File had yet to watch thetaping of the ceremony but hesaid Kieran Read came up to himafterwards and said he’d doneextremely well.
“That’s probably the mostmindblowing thing for uscoming out of little old Shannon.I think I actually made thatcomment that there wereprobably more people in theroom than in Shannon, to then tobe walking through the roomlater on and have Kieran Read goout of his way to come over andcongratulate me. I think I wasalmost standing with my mouthopen in awe. He said without thevolunteers, we wouldn’t be here, that was pretty special, I’ll neverforget that.”
File also got to ‘bump into’ the
likes of Colin Meads, BrianLochore, Bryan Williams and IanKirkpatrick, as well as get a fewtreasured ‘selphies’ with KieranRead, Steve Hansen, John Keyand Richie McCaw.
Now back home, File’s nextjob is to find a place for thetrophy. “It’s a beautiful trophy, not sure what it’s made of but itweighs a tonne. It’s very special.Everyone who has spoken to mesays I deserve it [but] you just dothe things that need to be done.Someone did them when I wasplaying so it just seems thenatural thing to carry on and do.I felt I was accepting this awardon behalf of every volunteer inrugby.”
To cap off the week, File wasalso elected as president of theHorowhenua Kapiti RugbyFootball Union at last week’sannual meeting. The position isvalid for two years and File takesover from Rex Kerr.
File’s contribution toShannon RFC has been nothingshort of outstanding, accordingto Horowhenua Kapiti RugbyUnion chief executive CoreyKennett. “It’s fantastic to see
Dean recognised and rewardedfor all his years of dedicatedvolunteer service to ShannonRFC. We are delighted to haveDean in our rugby communityand like so many of our othervolunteers, doing it for the loveof the game.”
File, current club manager, isalso the club bar manager, premier team manager and maindriver of fundraising forShannon RFC as well aschairman of a working partyintroduced to sustain theShannon Domain facilities withother organisations. Earlier thisyear, when former Shannon RFCjunior player Nat Manville wastragically injured playing a 1stXV game for Awatapu College,File led a fundraising charge thatraised over $10,000 towards theNat Manville appeal. He has beeninvolved with the Shannonrugby club since 1999, as playerand president.
File is the third winner of theVolunteer of the Year fromHorowhenua Kapiti, after KenSwain won the award in 2008 andHilton Williams, also fromShannon, won the award in 2011.

King of the Mountain has a queen
PALMERSTON North stock driver Rebecca Barr proved she is a force to be reckoned with in the unforgiving ranks of superstock racing, wining the King of the Mountain title.
By PETER FRANKLIN
Palmerston North’s RebeccaBarr enjoyed a fantastic night, powering her No 34p car to whatmany believe was a history-making championship win.
The win has speedwaystatisticians searching throughthe record books, but she iscertainly on top of the world afterwinning the King of theMountain classic at StratfordSpeedway on Saturday.
Barr, along with a largecontingent of Palmerston North-based superstock drivers, arrived at Stratford on Friday forthe McCurdy Engineering/Moller Johnson Ltd New ZealandSuperstock Grand Prix qualifier.
After three heats Barr battledher way with the pack but failedto make it through to the GPlineup.
However, the gutsy Barrbrushed aside thedisappointment and turned herfocus on to the King of theMountain Superstock Champsfor the non-GP qualifiers.
Barr stuck to a proven gameplan — keep out of trouble andkeep circulating, picking upplaces every lap. While the gameplan worked, it did not stop herdishing out a few good hits alongthe way. At the end of the nightthe points tally was close butBarr proved too good for the rest.
Stratford Speedway presidentJohn Booker said Barr couldquite likely be the first femalecompetitor to stand at the top ofthe superstock podium in achampionship of any sort.
“I’m pleased it happenedhere,” he said.
Barr finished with 48 pointsfollowed by 67p Richard Hart, second on 44 points, with thirdplace filled by 62s ReganGernhoefer on 39 points.
While the King of theMountain proved to be action-packed, Wellington’s DaleRobertson took the narrowest ofwins to become the 2014-15McCurdy Engineering/MollerJohnson Ltd New ZealandSuperstock Grand Prixchampion.
After Friday’s qualifier, the
Grand Prix was going to beexplosive with over 20 of thefastest superstocks in thecountry lining up for GPhonours. Robertson onlyqualified sixth in his group onFriday night but saved the bestfor Saturday. Track conditionssuited the 89w car, getting
fantastic drive out of the corners.Carving up the field in the first ofthe 15 lap heat races, from grid 25to fourth place, Robertson couldnot repeat or better that in thesecond heat only managing aseventh place, from grid 12.
In the final heat, Robertsondrew the right grid position,
starting on second, on the insideline.
He had to contend with thelikes of 54p Scott Joblin who hada points lead going into the finaland 3nz Graeme Barr who wassnapping at the heels.
Joblin and Barr were both onform and while the predicted
heat three carnage nevereventuated, there was noshortage of high speed wheel towheel action.
Robertson went on to win thechampionship by one point (68points) from Scott Joblin (67points), with Graeme Barr inthird place (65 points).
