By PETER FRANKLIN [email protected] A family day out at Kimberley Reserve turned into a horrifying outing for 10-year- old Levin boy Qwizza Tamatea. The boy was playing with his cousins at the reserve when he climbed over a log and a possum trap slammed shut on his small hand. Luckily the boy only suf- fered deep bruising to his fingers. The boys’ father Tama Tamatea was relieved that his son only suffered bruising but he fears that a younger child would not have faired so well. He believes the trap was powerful enough to break a small dog’s leg. Mr Tamatea said he could not understand why someone, knowing the area was full of families camping and lots of children running around exploring in the bush, would set a trap there. ‘‘How many others are hid- den around the camp site?’’ he said. At the time Mr Tamatea, his wife and their five children were among extended family that included 13 young chil- dren who were all playing between the river and the campsite, which was just metres from the fence that separates the dog exercise area and the camping area. ‘‘We heard the kids yelling out that Qwizza was hurt, we went over to see what had happened and then we saw his hand stuck in the trap. I got a sickening feeling in my stom- ach when I saw his hand in the trap,’’ Mr Tamatea said. The boy was crying in pain. Mr Tamatea said the trap was hard to open, even for him. Qwizza was taken to a doctor to get checked over, luckily he received only bruised fingers. Later the trap was handed over to councillor Victoria Kay-Simmons who took it to Horowhenua District Council parks and leisure officer Keith Moyle. Mrs Kay-Simmons said she was shocked when she was told what had happened. ‘‘This is a well-known popu- lar area for families, I cannot believe someone would set a trap there,’’ she said. Mrs Kay-Simmons said there was a huge public event about to happen at the reserve that attracts thousands of people, including children, and it was of huge concern that a trap had been set there. Mr Moyle said the trap was a possum foot trap, also known as a number one trap, and designed to restrain the ani- mal and not break any bones or kill. Mr Moyle said this type of trap was easily purchased by anyone and that it had most likely been placed by someone trapping possum for fur. However, he added that this was a timely reminder that council does not allow placing traps on any recreational land. Anyone finding a possum trap in a public reserve should mark it’s location and report it immediately to council. INSIDE Teen parent unit opens — page 3

I would like to thank allthe people of Levin whowent out of their way tohelp look for Baxter — therewhere people deliveringflyers (day and night), walk-ing the streets (one ladyeven on her mobilityscooter) and people justtalking to each other.

On my times up in Levinlooking I found out thatthere weren’t too manypeople that didn’t know thathe was missing — you allshould be very proud of thecommunity that you all livein — so thanks again.

Baxter is home and well— he lost a couple of kgs, needed a good hair cut and a

ReformsRe local government reforms.

With the 2013 Local BodyElections now well over andthe new Councils alreadyhaving held swearing in cere-monies plus the appointmentof Councillors to the variouscommittees as well as electingdeputy mayors, it is possiblethat various councils will beinvolved in future local gov-ernment reforms with amal-gamations high on the list!

The 2013-2016 Local Body

electoral cycle could seemajor changes to New Zea-land local government withthe creation of UnitaryAuthorities and a reductionin the number of TerritorialLocal Authorities, an indi-cation being the recentlyannounced proposed govern-ance structure for the HawkesBay area with an electedmayor, plus nine Councillorsfrom five Wards and five

Community Boardsconsisting of 37 elected mem-bers as well as Maori repre-sentation.

Depending on the level ofopposition to the Local Gov-ernment Commission’sscheme, a new Hawkes BayCouncil could be elected inOctober 2015.

On the local scene, localgovernment re-organisationin the Horowhenua/Mana-watu area is inevitable withthe possibility of a UnitaryAuthority covering thecombined district, the newcouncil consisting of anelected mayor and around 10councillors plus three com-munity boards with possibly18 elected members with theheadquarters in PalmerstonNorth and service centres inLevin and Feilding, theadministration beingmanaged by one chief execu-tive and a number of seniormanagers recruited from theamalgamating councils.

Possibly HDC Councillorsshould already be lookingahead to the time when theywill have to become involvedin local government reformnegotiations on behalf of allHorowhenua district citizensand Ratepayers!

Levin’s former KimberleyCentre site went on the marketat the end of last year and isdrawing reasonable interest.

‘‘We haven’t advertised theproperty yet,’’ Harcourts Com-mercial Consultant BrianKendrick told HorowhenuaChronicle.

‘‘Signs calling for tenderswill go up in the next fewweeks.’’ Tenders close on April3.

The 48.6254ha property isunique. ‘‘It has a great deal ofhistory attached to it,’’ MrKendrick said.

The centre was a militarybase from 1939 until 1942 beforebecoming a psychiatric hospitalin 1945, closing in 2006.

‘‘Town water supply andsewage is already there,’’ MrKendrick said, but he points outanyone wanting to develop thesite would have to check withHorowhenua District Councilregarding consents.

‘‘I don’t imagine that wouldbe too hard, it is currentlyzoned rural, and all the infra-structure is there.’’

Having in excess of 70 build-ings, a November 2006 regis-tered valuation puts the estim-ated replacement cost at $19million.

The buildings date from 1918to 1985 with an area of 9sqm toover 600sqm.

The majority are in need ofmaintenance as little has beendone in the past 17 years. Arating valuation done in August2013 puts the land value at$1,750,000 and improvements at$2,100,000 giving an overall rate-able value of $3,850,000.

Multi-million dollar boat unmoved

LVN150114TWseacat

With the clock ticking downto a launch date planned forJanuary 30, the last thing boatbuilders of the multi-milliondollar catamaran, beingrefitted at the ManawatuMarine Boating Club, wouldwant is an earthquake.

Fortunately, themagnitude 6.2 earthquakethat jolted the district onJanuary 20 left the 11-meter-wide by 24m-long boat stillsitting soundly on its blocks.

The catamaran namedGuru, which means deepwater in Aborigine, hasbecome a mini-touristdestination over the past fewweeks since it arrived at theboating club car park onJanuary 8, attractinghundreds of locals andvisitors alike checking itsprogress.

Transported fromPalmerston North by truck inthree parts, more than ahundred people turned out onthe day to see the catamaranreassembled using twocranes.

It is the widest boat to bebuilt by Palmerston Northfirm Profab Engineering andwill weigh 110 tonnes whenfully assembled and fuelledup.

With just the electricalwiring to complete, thecatamaran will head toWellington for its finalfittings when it leavesFoxton, before starting workin Patea on February 10 andlater heading to Darwin as agear transporter for an oiland gas company.

Marchers on displayBy FRANKIEWEBB

Horowhenua boasted several topmarching teams in the 1950s and 60s.

The thrill and magic of marching isstill strong throughout New Zealand. On Saturday Horowhenua is beingtreated to a marching spectacular atOhau Primary School.

‘‘To date we have 17 teamsregistered,’’ Taitoko Leisure Marchingteam member Judith Tyler said.‘‘Teams from Levin, Palmerston North,New Plymouth, Wellington, HuttValley, Dannevirke and Taihape willperform a march past and individualdisplays.’’

Marching girls in white shiny bootsand plumed hats never lose their love of

the sport having now taken up ‘leisuremarching’ in their senior years. Leisuremarching is non-competitive but thewomen perform with no less passion orprecision than in their competitive daysof yesteryear.

Levin’s Taitoko Leisure MarchingTeam are hosting the Display Daywhich starts with a teams march past at11am.

Keepboreddogsbusywith gamesI have a dog that’s never outgrownthe puppy stage—he’s alwayschewing on things and causingtrouble. I think a lot of it is that he’sbored, but I’m running out of ideas. Isthere anything I can dowith himwhen I’ve got time over summer tokeep him entertained and notchewingmy things? It’s hard when dogs chew—

especially when they get a pair of shoesyou particularly love. And you’re right, many energetic dogs act upwhenthey’re bored, and often some seriouslyplayful stimulation will workwonders. It just so happens that this summer,

Beneful is sending a play truck aroundthe country on a tiki-tour, visiting dog-friendly parks to give Kiwis anopportunity to play with their dogs. There’ll be a Beneful play-gility

course (like an agility course butmuchmore fun), complete with seesaws, jumps, tunnels andweave poles. There’s also heaps of tennis balls andthrowers, doggy dress-ups and funphoto opportunities. Plus, there’ll belots of other dogs around to keep yoursentertained and a play team giving outtreats and spot prizes. If you’re keen to take your dog

along, you can find the events onwww.eventfinder.co.nz under‘‘Beneful’’.For other times, lots of dogs like an

old-fashioned game of fetch, tug-of-war

with a thick piece of rope, or wrestlingwith their owner in the garden. Mostly, dogs just like to be included in familyactivities, so try to find places you cantake him over summer so he’s part ofthe fun.

Reflecting on libraryservices over the past fourdecades on my last day hereat Te Takere makes mevery proud to have been apart of what we haveachieved.

My first library job everwas here in Levin in the‘new’ Levin library in BathStreet as a junior assistant.

I owe my love of librarywork to the wonderfulpeople who drew me in tothe fold and began mylibrary education.

Handwritten numberson book cards, hand filingof cards for books issuedand typing multiple cardsfor the card catalogue not acomputer in sight.

At that time having thedate stamp for the issue slipattached to the top of thepen so that you didn’t haveto pick up a second tool tocomplete a transaction wascutting-edge!

Since then I haveworked in a number of

libraries from smallspecialist services to largecity sized public ones and Ihave filled many positions.

In all of them I have beenexcited by the forwardthinking innovativeattitudes of colleagues at alllevels of the organisation.Computerisation of libraryservices has lightened theworkload of many whilegiving access of moreinformation that we everdreamed would be possible.

Of them all, nowherehas been as exciting as TeTakere.

Look at us now, TeTakere is the envy ofcommunities in NewZealand and is still proudlyforging ahead with newideas, technology andservices.

With wonderful supportfrom our community wehave been able to offer farmore than any othercommunity centre-libraryin New Zealand.

I am truly proud ofhaving been present at thebeginning of Te Takere andlook forward to enjoyingthe services and activitiesoffered in the years ahead.

Olivier’s life and loves take centre stageOlivierby Philip ZieglerMacmillan, $40..................................................

Olivier becameLordOlivier of Brighton in1970, so it is strange thatwhen askedwhowas the greatest of themall the reply ismost often ‘‘Sir LaurenceOlivier’’.It was in 1947 and 1948 that Ralph

Richardson, JohnGielgud andOlivierwereknighted for services to the theatre. The threewere, however, the creamof

the crop, but onlyOlivier advanced to thepeerage.None had his range or power.A good biographermust become close

to the personwhose life has become thebiographer’s passion for as long as it takesto complete thework. One thing that biographersmust never

do is to get too close and personalwiththeir subject. No one likes or enjoys an obsequious

biography.Ziegler has avoided all the obvious and

not-so-obvious traps in his account ofOlivier’s life in this excellent and at alltimes extremely readable story.Olivier loved his firstwife, Joy, until the

arrival of Vivien Leighand she takes up a largepart of Olivier’s life.Theywere obsessed

with each other andpassionately in love foryears. I had not realisedthat Leigh’s problemlate in theirmarriagehad beenmental;regrettably, shewas in

anotherworldwith Peter Finch.Olivier had been very caring of hiswife

until his position becameuntenable. It was at this time he found Joan

Plowright and here he struck lucky. Theywere happy in their life together untilOlivier’s death.Olivierwas not only the greatest stage

actor of his time hewas aHollywoodsuperstar andOscar-winning director.Ziegler had access tomore than 50

hours of candid, unpublished interviewsthat he has used brilliantly in his storyabout someone forwhomhe has anenormous regard. He offers readers sympathy, joy, facts

andmoments of success and triumphduringOlivier’s career, which covered agreater part of the 20th century.

PASSION: Levin’s Southern Norse Living History Club is looking for new memberswith a passion for all things Viking.

Dark Ages beckonBy TANYAWOOD

SEAFARERSThe Vikings were seafaringScandinavian people who raided, traded, explored, and settled in wideareas of Europe, Asia, and the NorthAtlantic islands from the late 8th tothe mid-11th centuries. The Vikingwooden longships allowed fornavigation in rough seas or in shallowriver waters, and could be landed onbeaches and hauled overland.Broadly viewed as pagan raiders andplunderers, Vikings also engaged intrade, settled wide-ranging coloniesand acted as mercenaries. One oftheir lasting legacies was theformation of the independentkingdoms of England and Scotland.

A group of Horowhenua families spendtheir spare time living in the Dark Ages.

Their passion for re-enacting Vikingcombat has now become less a hobbyand more a lifestyle for members of theSouthern Norse Living History Club.According to club captain WadeCashmore, ‘‘It’s virtually totalimmersion in the Viking lifestyle’’.

Regularly appearing at the MedievalMarket, the war cries and the clash ofswords is always a crowd-pleaser, andnow the club is looking for newmembers.

However, it’s not for ‘‘people justwanting to swing a sword around’’, saidMr Cashmore.

All weapons, leather and metal scalearmour, clothing and equipment ismeticulously researched from theViking period (about 800BC to 1250AD)and authentically reproduced by hand,by club members, using originaltechniques and materials as much aspossible.

‘‘We have Jeremy Winchcomb, arguably the best weapons maker inNew Zealand, in our club.

‘‘What we can’t make ourselves, wetry to trade or barter for it, or buy onlywhen absolutely necessary.’’

Combat training, classed as full tomedium contact or ‘‘bruise but notbreak’’, is also as authentic as possible.Swords are blunted but Mr Cashmoresaid ‘‘It is armed combat so there are theodd bruises and scratches but no worse

than playing rugby.’’Combatants also need to be fit just to

wear the chain mail, protective armourand carry the weapons, which totalabout 30kgs.

The club has become familyorientated over the past 10 years and MrCashmore said weekend camps arepopular.

‘‘You get the whole Vikingexperience, cooking over open fires andall the kids have a ball.’’■ For more details about the SouthernNorse Living History Club, contact membersat the Medieval Market or email WadeCashmore at [email protected]

How to makethe mostof fertiliser

LOOKING GOOD: Roses can benefit from the use of BioPhos.

Diggingin

WALLY RICHARDS

Fertilisers either manmade ornatural will usually bear theinitials, then a series of threenumbers.

This indicates the nitrogen, potassiumand phosphate level and ratio to filler.

N-P-K ratio reflects the availablenutrients by weight in that fertiliser. Forexample, if a 100 kilo bag of fertiliser hasan N-P-K ratio of 5-7-4, it contains 5kg ofnitrate, 7kg of phosphate (which containsphosphorous), 4kg of potash (whichcontains potassium) and 84 kilo of filler.

Nitrogen helps plants make theproteins they need to produce new tissuesand hence grow.

Phosphorous stimulates root growth, helps the plant set buds and flowers, improves vitality and increases seed size.

Potassium improves overall vigor ofthe plant. It helps the plants makecarbohydrates and provides diseaseresistance along with tolerance togrowing conditions such as cold etc.

Phosphorous in the middle of the NPKhas always been a bit more of a puzzle tome where I have always had a goodperception of the other two and what theycan do in my garden.

In early horticulture phosphorous wasobtained from bird or bat droppings fromvarious places around the world.

Reactive rock phosphate could bemined but in the garden it would sitslowly breaking down over countlessyears not making enough readilyavailable to the plants that needed themineral.

Then some smart person discoveredthat you could break down rockphosphate with acids to make it readilyavailable. This is then called superphosphate.

The problem is of course that the endproduct is acidic and does harm the soillife.

Used over a period of time, the soilbecomes inert and only able to growplants by repeated applications offertilisers. The plants are not healthy andattract all manner of diseases and pestswhich are nature’s cleaners to get rid ofsickly plants to make way for healthyones.

To ensure that a crop is okay to sell,

growers then use various chemicals toprevent the diseases and pests fromdestroying the crops. What you end upwith is produce with low nutritionalvalues laced with a concoction ofchemicals.

If you consume regularly a food chainlacking in goodness that your body needs,to be healthy and if that same food chain issupplying your body with a number ofchemical poisons as well; you may start todevelop various health complaintsespecially the ones we see today such ascancer, diabetes, Parkinson’s, heartdisease etc.

This is so fundamentally obvious andso simple that most people cantunderstand it. These people believe thatthe Government would not allow this tohappen so the food chain that is commonto most people is the best that money canbuy.

It was good about 60 odd years ago butnot now as health figures show.

Phosphorous is an important elementin your garden and outside of getting asailing ship and visiting an island wherebirds have being dropping manure foruntold time we are back to using reactiverock phosphate.

In New Zealand we have some veryclever people and one of these found a wayto break down rock phosphate by usingmicrobes. The product is called BioPhosand is readily available to the homegardener from most good garden shops orby mail order.

Not only does this natural productsupply your garden plants and lawns withtheir phosphorous requirements withoutdamage to the soil life it has its ownmicrobes that are used in breaking downthe phosphate. These added microbes toyour garden soils makes for far better soil.A win, win situation no damage and soilenhancement.

BioPhos works as well as super, butactually better as it does not not have apeak growth on application and gives amuch longer sustained release ofphosphorus to plants. Instead of killingsoil life it actually supplies new microorganisms to the soil which carry onbreaking the natural phosphorus down, meaning that only one application isneeded per year unless you are croppingduring the winter as well.

Some rose growers and rose societiesrecommend using BioPhos for better, healthier roses.

BioPhos contains phosphate, potassium, sulphur and calcium at therates of P10:K8:S7:Ca28.

BioPhos is Bio Certified for organicgrowing.

It is pH neutral and used at thefollowing rates; New beds work in 100grams per square metre, the same withlawns but water in to settle.

Side dressing plants; seedlings 8 grams(a teaspoon full) around base of the plantor in the planting hole. Same for potatoes(which do well with phosphorus) Sowingbeans peas etc sprinkle down row withseeds. Roses and similar sized plants 18gor a tablespoon full around plant or inplanting hole.

Established fruit trees etc, spread atthe rate of 100g per square metre arounddrip line or where feeder roots are. Applyto vegetable gardens in spring and afurther application in autumn if growingwinter crops. Can be applied to containerplants also. Apply to tomatoes whenplanting or side dress existing plants.

When you obtain your BioPhos youwill notice it consists of fine powder togranules with sawdust.

The lumps of granules actually contain4,888,000 fungal colonies to aid thebreakdown and enhance your gardensoils.■ For gardening problems ringme at 0800466-464 (Palmerston North 357-0606)

In the second heat, Patterson workedhis way to the front with a superb drive, followed by 247p David Marshall and 45sJosh Trott. James’ race took a turn for theworse early on, tangling with Nicole

Hickmott. James Mallia and Luke Miersmanaged to make it passed the spinningcars, but both lost plenty of places.

After two heats Patterson had themaximum 68 points, but started near theback of the field in the final heat. Cooperwas sitting in second place on 63 points,Free and Tyson Wright had 58 points,Mallia 57, Marshall 56 and CarolPodjursky on 55 points.

Mallia took out the final heat after ahard-fought battle with Free and Cooper,Patterson, who put in another credibledrive to finish fourth and successfullydefend his Manawatu title with 99 points.

Humphrey and Franklin bag NI crownBy PETER FRANKLIN

Paul Humphrey and Ben Franklin added totheir title collection after a dominant nightthat finished with the NZ1 pairing takingthe North Island sidecar crown.

The pair were the pick of the field onSaturday as they charged to victory at theRobertson Holden International Speedway. No one managed to give the pair a realchallenge.

A field of 23 sidecars with their ridersand passengers contested the AFCMotorcycles North Island Sidecarchampionships in front of a large andenthusiastic crowd.

After some hot qualifying races, thefinals turned into a messy affair with anumber of restarts as nerves got to theriders.

Zachan and Carter (97p) took the first

heat ahead of Humphrey and Franklin, ending their amazing 20-odd race unbeatenstreak. The second heat saw 97p Zachanand Carter tangle with 96p Whye andCooper, with both of them retiring on theinfield. 2nzp Horne and Horne won therace. However, a charge by Humphrey andFranklin had them come from fifth place tofinish second ahead of 9g Miller and Miller.

After two heats Humphrey andFranklin were clear leaders, andrealistically only needed to finish the lastheat in the top four to secure the title.

Humphrey and Franklin blitzed thefield in the final race to win their firstNorth Island Championship.

The experienced duo of 9g Deane andRob Miller finished second in the race, securing second overall ahead of 2nzpRichard and Alastair Horne, who had putan impressive race night together.

Quin has mighty new machine

LVN290114pjfquin

BACK ON TRACK: Mick Quin got the chance to get some hot laps under his belt at Harrisville speedway in his new car, before thefirst round of the Burger King Pro Dirt Series.

By PETER FRANKLIN

Mick Quin has returned to speedwayracing in an all new American-builtspeedway super saloon.

He took on the best of the best in thefirst round of the Burger King Pro DirtSeries last Friday night at Meeaneespeedway.

It has been a few years since speedwayfans have seen Mick Quin behind thewheel of a super saloon. His last car was aMercedes powered by a 5.7 litre V8.However, his new car is hopefully goingto give him the edge he is looking for onthe competition.

Quin knows it will take a bit of time toget the car set up to his liking, but he isconfident, once he and the crewunderstand the car, it will produce theresults he is looking for.

He got an indication of the car’spotential, starting from grid position 16in the Burger King Pro Dirt series round1 feature. He worked his way through atop field to 10th place.

During an earlier heat race the newcar was christened, when he got hit in theside, only causing superficial damage, but it was enough for Quin to think, ‘‘It isscratched now . . . ’’ and started to pushthe car and himself harder.

In between races the crew continued tomake subtle changes to the suspension, resulting the car getting a little quickerwith each race.

Quin’s Chevrolet SS was built inNicholasville, Kentucky by KillerChassis. The chassis design wasintroduced by fabricator David Webb in2010 and has proved to be a winner in theUS late model division.

Webb emphasises the double-downtube design is unique, this chassis designis second to none in strength, quality ofbuild and allows the chassis to do thingsothers can only dream of.

Because of the differences betweenrace car regulations between America

and New Zealand, Quin and Killer RaceCars boss David Webb spent aconsiderable amount of time with therule book, ensuring that the finishedchassis would comply to New Zealandregulations.

In September (2013) the first tubes

were put on to the jig and Quin’s race carstarted taking shape.

To power the Chevrolet, Quin went togood friend and master race enginebuilder Gary Stanton, whose workshop isalso located in Nicholasville.

Stanton delivered a 358 cubic inch

fuel-injected small block that produces700hp The car arrived in New Zealand inlate December.

For Palmerston North fans, Quin willmake his first appearance on March 29,when the Burger King Pro Dirt seriescomes to town.

‘I knew the Aussieswould be fast and Iknew if I could get adecent start I’d beable to match theirpace. I let myselfdown a bit with mystarts . . . I was

popping wheelies outof the gate.’—CODYCOOPER

Mount Maunganui’s CodyCooper has again won the NewZealand Motocross GrandPrix title, although hecertainly had to work hard torepeat the feat this timearound.

Cooper rode a Honda tocollect his first big win at theannual New ZealandMotocross Grand Prix atWoodville in 2007 and wasdetermined on Sunday toreclaim the top step of thepodium at this 53rd annualrunning of the iconic Honda-sponsored Woodville event.

With the four-roundnationals set to kick off nearTimaru in less than twoweeks, Cooper’s mission at theweekend was to send a signalto his rivals by winning thetop two titles at Woodville, theMX1 class title and theInvitation Feature Race.

However, Cooper wasperhaps surprised by thepower-packed potency ofAustralian KTM team ridersFord Dale and Kirk Gibbs whohad crossed the Tasman totackle Woodville on Sunday.

Dale won the first two MX1class races of the day andlooked odds-on to wrap up theMX1 crown and perhaps towin the Invitation FeatureRace as well the race that hasthe NZ GP crown as its prize.

But Cooper came on strongin the feature race to catchand pass fast-starting Daleand then built an eight-secondbuffer before the finish, givinghim the GP title.

Cooper then won the day’sfinal MX1 race as Dale had towithdraw with painful wristcramps, that was enough forCooper to win the MX1 classoutright, his 2-2-1 resultsgiving him an 11-pointwinning margin over eventualrunnerup Brad Groombridge(Suzuki), of Taupo.

‘‘Consistency has alwaysbeen one of my downfalls inthe past . . . but perhaps notnow,’’ declared the 30-year-old

Cooper afterwards.‘‘I knew the Aussies would

be fast and I knew if I could geta decent start I’d be able tomatch their pace. I let myselfdown a bit with my starts . . . Iwas popping wheelies out ofthe gate.’’

The MX2 (250cc) class atWoodville produced asurprise winner withMangakino’s Kayne Lamontjust recovered from surgeryand riding a new bike for anew team won the day with1-3-2 results, finishing aheadof Rotorua’s John Phillips(Honda) and Dargaville’sHamish Dobbyn (KTM).

Lamont also took one of thenew Husqvarna Red Bull NewZealand Racing Team bikes towin the stand-alone RoddyShirriffs Memorial race, forriders aged under-22 years.

Tauranga’s AaronWiltshier won the 125cc classahead of fellow KTM riderJosiah Natzke, of Hamilton, with Ngatea’s Ben Broad(Yamaha) taking third step onthe podium.

Pahiatua internationalPaul Whibley (Yamaha) wassimply too good for his rivalsin the crowd-favourite RiverRace, the two-time UnitedStates crosscountry championcomfortably winning bothraces from Honda’s Townley, who had briefly come out ofretirement to ‘‘tick the bucketlist box‘‘and contest thesplash-filled race.
