“Black Beauty”Maya, andRock ’n’ RollElvis newestRedwingsAdoption Clubrecruits.Maya arrived atRedwings in2010 as part ofa group ofseven equinesrescued from afarm in Essex. The RSPCAhad been calledto investigatereports of adead horse in afield at the siteand, as well as

the deceased horse, foundMaya and her friends kept insqualid conditions.

Maya now lives happily atRedwings' newest visitorcentre in Aylsham, NorthNorfolk, and her courage andgentle nature make her theperfect adoption star!

Similarly to Maya, Elvis sadlydid not have the best start inlife. In 2011, Elvis was signedover into the care of Redwingsafter welfare concerns for alarge group of ponies wereraised by Caerphilly CountyCouncil in Wales.

Elvis’ elderly owner wasstruggling to care for hishorses and subsequently manywere suffering from poorhealth due to a lack of foodand veterinary treatment.

Elvis has a friendly character, huge heart and devilish goodlooks which make himirresistible for the RedwingsAdoption Club – and to thevisitors of Redwings Ada Colecentre where he lives.Maya and Elvis can each beadopted for £12.50 per yearand by becoming their friendsupporters can help ensurethey continue to have happyand healthy lives in theSanctuary – far from thehorrors of their pasts.www.redwings.org.uk

Redwingsannounces twonew adoptionstars

Pony power was the order of the day as twoponies were named the RSPCA RescuePonies of the Year.

Little Ted, a bay Dartmoor pony who wasdiscovered close to death by the RSPCA andfought his way back to health, scooped theChampion place and Pearly Princess fromThornberry Animal Sanctuary in Sheffieldwas crowned reserve champion.

Judges, contestants and spectators atEquifest were moved to tears by theharrowing photographs and stories of the 70rescue ponies and horses who entered thequalifying classes.

RSPCA chief inspector Cathy Hyde, whoheads the 16-strong team of specialistequine inspectors and helped organise theprestigious competition, said: “These twolittle ponies showed they have got hugepersonalities and together with their youngriders they proved that rescue horses andponies are far from second best.

“Little Ted had a horrific start in his short life. It’s almost impossible to believe that the

photo of the exhausted, little scrap of lifecollapsed in a stable is the same smart, proud, Dartmoor pony who revelled in beingin front of a crowd at Equifest. Thetransformation is incredible.

Little Ted was rescued by the RSPCA in 2010after being found severely emaciated andcollapsed. He was put on drip at the sceneand against the odds he survived. His ownerwas later banned from keeping horses afteradmitting causing suffering.

Entries came from numerous equinecharities and sanctuaries including BlueCross, Redwings Horse Sanctuary, WorldHorse Welfare and the Horse and PonyProtection Association (HAPPA) and thehorses and ponies were judged on theirstories of survival as well as theirtransformation.

Top showing judge Nigel Hollings, formerchairman of the British Show HorseAssociation said: “I really enjoyed judgingthe RSPCA / PRP Rescue Classes atEquifest. To see and read all about each ofthe ponies and horses was an experiencethat will always stay with me. Whatimpressed the most was the attitude andbehaviour of the riders and handlers - it wasvery obvious how strong the bond andconnection with their equine was.

Star letterMy Best Friend

My two book ends!Justine Cookson

My 2 and 4 year old daughters on their ponies,

Royal and Joshua.

Sally Victor

When most people think of their bestfriend they think of a person who theytrust but, to me my best friend is not justthat. Because even though my best friendisn't human over the past 8 years he’sbecome the one I can rely on - to providea warming nuzzle at the end of a long day- he just seems to know when things aren'tright and can immediately put a smile backon my face, even when others fail. It’s strange to think thatwe have now had him for half of my life, because it seemslike yesterday when the journey began, and after years ofbegging my dad for a pony he finally said yes to this fluffylittle rescue pony - that could be mistaken for a bear, but tome he was perfect. From then on we grew as a team, apartnership built on trust, somethingwhich is now so strong it can neverbe broken and even though I've nowoutgrown him - our favourite thing isto go off for a tackless gallop acrossthe paddock where his speed stillamazes me at the age of 32! Andthat’s why I'm writing to you todayso that I can share with you, andothers, the star that Rushka truly isso he can be fully appreciated.Lucy Morgan

The Society of MasterSaddlers replies:

When maintaining a used bridle cleanyour bridle regularly according to howoften it is used. It is much better to giveit a quick clean every time it is used but,if you don't have time, a thorough cleanonce a week for a bridle in daily useshould be sufficient.

A good way to keep your bridle in goodcondition is to wipe it off after use usinga cloth such as an old flannel or dishclothdipped in a small bucket of warm waterand thoroughly squeezed out.

After cleaning the dirt and grease fromthe bridle, apply a coat of saddle soap. The soap should be applied with a drysponge. You can dip the soap bar intothe water to wet it a little but don't allowit to lather as it will then leave a whitecoating on the leather which may gohard. Alternatively, use one of the liquidsoaps.

If the bridle is very greasy or otherwiseheavily soiled you will find that a smallhandful of washing soda crystals addedto the water will help enormously, and

will not affect the suppleness of theleather.

Should you get caught out in the rainwhilst riding, immediate action isrequired! Dismantle the bridle as soon aspossible and clean it in the usual way –then allow it to dry out very slowly. Donot be tempted to place it near a heateror a sunny window to speed up thedrying process as this will make theleather go very hard - and you may notbe able to revive it. After drying, apply acoat of leather dressing or oil followedby saddle soap.

Do not oil your bridle too often: restrictoiling to when the bridle is new, when itgets very wet, or if it has been unusedfor a while and has dried out.

If you have just bought a new bridle, always check that it fits your horsebefore treating it with any kind of oil orleather dressing, as the saddler will notgive a refund or exchange an oiled bridle.

Once this is done, apply a liberal coat ofgood quality leather dressing to bothsides. Leather dressings are available inoil and paste forms: ask your Saddler forhis recommendation.

Before applying the dressing, dismantlethe bridle and place it on somenewspaper. If you are using a liquiddressing, the best way to do it is to poura little into an old saucer and paint itonto the bridle with a clean dry paintbrush.

Allow the dressing to soak in and then, ifthe leather still seems to be quite dry, apply another coat. When the dressing isfinally absorbed, apply a coat of saddle

soap or balm using an almost drysponge (if the sponge is very dry, it's agood tip to dip the soap, not the sponge,in water). You can then reassemble thebridle and it is now ready for use.

For saddles use the same method as forbridles except that it is best to apply theleather dressing or oil only to the fleshside (underneath or rough side) as itsoaks in better from this side, and the oilor dressing should not come off on yourclothing, also some saddle leathers havea coating that will not allow oil to soak infrom the grain side (top side).

Use only soaps or balms on your saddlewhich are recommended by yourSaddler as some have been known tocause colour fade to certain saddles. Some manufacturers have their ownbrand of soap or dressing, in this case itmay be better to follow the maker’srecommendations, but you should notdo any harm to any leather saddle orbridlework using theserecommendations.

Another important tip is to store yoursaddle and bridle on a purpose-maderack where a fairly even temperature ismaintained. This will help avoid anydamage to your saddle and bridle, and ifpossible keep it under a fabric saddlecover.

12 HorseScene

In this feature, Jason tackles the issue of a spooky dressagehorse who is in need of desensitization and a hair cut!

“Jazzee is a very talented PSG dressage horse who is veryspooky and ‘looky’, so his training here with me is aboutdesensitizing him to pretty much everything, so that hehopefully can start to concentrate on his work under saddleand listen to his rider as oppose to everything else that isgoing on”

Jason wants to introduce clippers to Jazzee, but firstly heneeds to get Jazzee’s attention, whose eyes have been onstalks, staring at the film camera and our photographer.

Jason works with all his horses using rope halters, which hesays gives you a bit more ability to control, as they workwith his ‘pressure and release’ theory, which means thatwhen the horse pulls away from you it puts pressure on, butas soon as the horse stops it releases any pressure, thusgiving reward. The lead rope is extra long, to allow Jason tomove away from the animal and come closer safely.

Jason explains that your horse’s safety and your own isparamount, so he always wears a hard hat and works thehorses in the school because it offers good yet soft footing.

Jazzee is not paying attention so Jason starts off by askingJazzee to trot around him on a small circle, with somechanges of direction.

“Can you see how Jazzee is too busy looking at everythingelse and ignoring me, so I need to keep asking for him tomove and change direction until he actually focuses on meand starts to listen. This is his problem under saddle, so thisground work will help”

Jason chases Jazzee a little out of the circle and then asksfor a change of rein, then another, then another change ofdirection, then another. Eventually after a few minutes,Jazzee actually has his focus finally on Jason and not on the

horses galloping around the field behind us. The idea behindthis groundwork is for Jazzee to realize by not working withJason closely he is making life really hard for himself, but ifhe chooses to work with Jason, then life becomes easy andthe circle and sharp changes of direction work stops.

“Now Jazzee is listening and paying attention, we can startto work with him” Explains Jason.

Horses with clipping issues could take one session it couldtake weeks before we get the horse clipped.

Jason is keen to point out that you need to take your timeand allow small victories to be the aim throughout yourtraining.

Jason firstly rubs the palm of his hand all over the horse tomake sure Jazzee is relaxed and happy. Then Jason takesthe cordless clippers and stands by Jazzee’s shoulder andturns them on.

Courtesy of Aloeride, the natural organic aloe vera equine supplement, wecaught up with UK-based Australian horseman, Jason Webb, who specializesin starting young horses and retraining horses with behavioural and riddenproblems at his centre in Kent.

Jason moves Jazze around him - trying to get hisattention on him rather than everything else thatsgoing on

Jazze is moving around Jason in a much calmermanner, being more attentive

jason familarises Jazze with the clippersusing his hand as point of contact

Page 13: Horse Scene September/October

“It’s important to remain relaxed but also aware that horsescan jump and flee, so you need to be prepared for theirreaction”

Jazzee doesn’t seem to bothered by the noise, so Jason isable to then touch Jazzee shoulder with his near hand and theclippers in the other, so that Jazzee associates the noise with

a soft touch. Once he is good with this Jason puts the clippersin the hand he is rubbing Jazzee with so he feel’s the vibrationof the clippers through the familiarity of Jason’s hand.

“It’s important to work both sides of the horse. Most horsesare naturally one sided, exasperated by the fact that we ashumans tend to do most things off the left hand side of thehorse, so with any groundwork you need to do things evenly”

Jazzee seems to be accepting the clippers quite happily andJason is able to move all over Jazzee body with no issues.

“If you do come across tension and resistance, you need towork with the horse and try not to remove the source ofpressure until they accept it which in this case is the clipperstension, which in the case of a horse being clipper shy. Youwant the horse to work on the ‘pressure – reward’ concept, which we worked on earlier on in the circle work”

“However” and Jason is quick to add: if the problem is toogreat for your knowledge, then don’t be afraid to ask aprofessional for help and advice”

Finally, should your horse have a behavioural problem, Jasonalways recommends looking at the whole picture from healththrough to the tack used. Jason feeds Aloeride to thoseresident horses because of the supplement’s wide reachingbenefits from helping to boost a compromised immunesystem through to helping support a good digestive system.

Spice upyour schooling!Courtesy of retailer Shadow Horse, international dressage rider Michael Eilberg giveshis top tips on adding some spice to your everyday schooling…

TOPTIPS!

If your flatwork is becoming dull, then sometimes adding in pole workcan help. You can use poles in a variety of ways, to help create moreenergy and lift or to help lengthen a horse’s stride.

A good exercise is to fan your poles out on a circle and ride more tothe inside of the circle for a more collected trot, then more to theoutside for longer length strides. This is quite a difficult exercise for therider too as you have to ride accurately and maintain softness and agood rhythm throughout. This is a great exercise in preparation foryour dressage tests and helping the horse develop muscle.

Some riders find that setting poles out in a square helps disciplinethem into riding more accurately and also helps improve your rideraids, as again this is an exercise which requires control and skill in orderto keep your horse within ‘the box’. Lunging your horse over raisedpoles on a circle can also help create more cadence and lift to yourhorse’s paces or adding a cross pole can add interest to your lungework, even if you don’t fancy leaving the ground when sat aboard.

Going around and around in circles will be boring, so start toconcentrate on riding clear patterns and changing your pace at themarkers. For example riding a figure of eight in canter, then walking onthe centre line then up into canter will encourage you to ride yourhorse straight and check if he is listening to your aids!

You can develop this exercise by interspersing trot transitions at eachend marker as well and using the shape to ride a series of collected andmedium trot or canter depending on your horse’s stage of training.Riding transitions are key to engaging your horse’s hind legs, but aswell as direct transitions eg: walk-trot-walk, you can also ride workingtrot –medium-working trot, again riding lots of transitions, from walk-trot-walk, trot-canter-trot and so on, making sure that your horse‘jumps off your leg aid’

I probably ride hundreds of transitions when I ride, because it reallydoes help the horse engage his hind leg and create more energy andthus more expression within the paces. A good exercise to ride is to gofrom working trot to medium trot and back again. Do this all in risingtrot if you have any tension in your seat but if your seat is independent, then you can ride working trot in sitting then rise in the medium trot.Think about really ‘opening’ up the trot in the medium, and then usinghalf halts, bringing the horse into working trot again. You can ride theselarge around the arena or across a serpentine, concentrating onstraightness and softness.

Another great exercise is to ride a 10 metre circle in trot in the cornerof your arena then ride across the diagonal in medium trot, which helpsset up the horse and use the same principle but ask for shoulder-indown the long side.

If you think your flatwork is boring, then the likelihood is that your horse will do too!The key to a happy horse is to include plenty of variety in his work, so by introducingsome new exercises, you can not only improve your horse’s way of going, but also helpdevelop your riding skills and keep both of you interested!

This multi action spray has been developed using Eucalyptus and Tea Tree pure

essential oils. Both act as natural decongestants. It helps alleviate

breathing problems and minimises dust in the coat and

bedding. We have added natural conditioners, which gives the

coat a healthy shine. Apply liberally to the chest area and

spray bedding and walls. It is excellent for horses on box rest or

horses in transit, simply spray around boxes/trailers thus

making breathing easier whilst in a confined space.

It is an excellent coolant after hard work; it can be sprayed

onto the horse or added to a bucket of water and sponged on.

Always apply to head areas with a damp sponge or cloth,

avoiding eyes. Eucalyptus pure essential oil is so versatile it

protects the body all year round, but is renowned for its

effectiveness against coughs and colds. It also helps combat

viral infections, bronchitis, rheumatism, muscular strains

and used in veterinary care as an antiseptic. Sweet Itch

sufferers will benefit greatly if this product is regularly

When it comes to feed allergies, you can often findyourself chopping and changing, only to discover thatyou may lose one allergen but, because the nature of acomplete feed, find one allergen replaced by another…Han Van De Braak MD of equine aloe vera supplementAloeride explains further…

Few owners give their horse a feed and then see animmediate allergic reaction, this would be an ‘IgE’ immuneresponse, instead they often grapple with the slow onset‘IgG’ response which often makes it difficult to link thetrigger to the response. Also, some animals can be allergicto various components within their diet and this allergy candevelop over in later life, causing the horse owner furtherconfusion.

One of the biggest offenders is the cereal family, such asbarley, maize, wheat and oat. It’s also important to note thata feed crop harvested closely to the soil (moisture contentbeing the culprit) or dried too late, also increases thelikelihood of moulds like Aspergillus or Penecillium, whichproduce aflatoxins, which again can cause problems!

In addition, some horses can also react to other additionsto the feed, such as oils or even garlic. Symptoms to a foodallergy can range from mild lumps all over the horse’s bodythrough to severe symptoms such as a swollen airway andof course if breathing is compromised, urgent veterinarytreatment should be sought.

Aloeride can help in many ways where allergies areconcerned and beyond eliminating the allergic feed trigger,

Aloeride has been found to be especially effective as abuffer against slow allergic reactions. Allergies also can bemore than ‘just the immune system disliking a substance’;very often it can be a relative enzyme deficiency leavingfeed uncleaved and thus becoming an irritant. An irritatedgut walls does two things: increases the risk of reactivecontractions (colic) and increases likelihood of leaky gut (asthe gaps between enterocytes widen). The latter opens thegate for macromolecules to venture where they shouldn’t;this disrupts tissue and function anywhere blood takesthem. Pure organic equine Aloeride is easy to feed andtaste-free, and is also beneficial to skin, coat and hoofcondition and general well being – ensuring that your horseor pony has great support the natural way.

Finally, if you suspect that your horse does have a foodallergy, there are a few things you can do to determine thecause. The first is to eliminate whatever the horse is allergicto, by (slowly) stripping back the horse’s diet to determinewhich ingredient is the culprit and then removing it fromthe horse’s diet and hopefully preventing further outbreaks. Other options available are blood cell counts andlaboratory tests, however as with any equine medicalconcern, I would always suggest speaking to your vetbefore taking any direct action.

Wandlite LED tube lightI always dread this time of year when itgets darker earlier as I have noelectricity in my stable, However, this year I was asked to test thesmallest size of the WandliteLED tube light, (it is advised

that you would need a 1,000mm or 2,000mm tube tolight an outbuilding or stable). Testing this was a veryexciting prospect for me as being on a yard with noelectricity in the winter means the small amount ofdaylight I get is spent doing chores rather thanspending time riding. The tube light can be run onmultiple choices of power, including solarpowered panels, generator, 12v car/truck/tractorlead battery or even a car cigarette lightersocket as well as mains electricity. I tested thisfrom a car battery and was surprised at howbright and powerful even the smallest light was. Ididn’t need to worry about using this around myhorse as it is tough, durable and also waterresistant. I will definitely be ordering more -

starting at only £30.00 theyare invaluable and with theoption to clip them togetherto make them even brighter, Iwon’t have to worry about nothaving electricity again.

Rambo Grand Prix Dustbuster Stable Sheet

The first thing I noticed about this rugwhilst testing it was the quality. It ismade up of a ribbed polyester outerwith a silky polyester lining - whichprotects the mane and shoulders fromrubbing. When I put it on my horse itwas a great fit - allowing plenty ofmovement, and the straps are verygood quality meaning that nothingcame undone during the night. It isthin enough to wear in the warmer late

summer weather, but is also plentywarm enough for a cooler night. It didit’s job and gave my horse a silky finish

- it lifted the dirt and loose hairs from his coat and left him with agleam. I will definitely be using this on my horse in preparationfor a show - as it certainly takes away the elbow grease from thegrooming! At £80.00 I would highly recommend this rug toanyone looking to get that sparkle on their horse’s coat.

Do you suffer with back painfor love of riding your horse? We all get aches and pains, as we getolder, especially if we have enduredriding accidents along the way. The loveof riding and the feeling of freedom andbeing at one with your horse is amagnificent emotion and one Ipersonally always wanted to feel.

However, after a serious riding accident fracturing myback, riding became a painful experience. If my horse putan unexpected spook in, or tripped, or I temporarily lostmy seat and came down hard onto the saddle, it wouldcause me weeks of pain and lots of physiotherapy.

I toyed with the idea of inventing a seat pad, I evenbought several, but not one worked for my posture orgave me pain relief. Out of the blue a man knocked on mydoor asking me if I could help him with a horse relatedproblem and it turned out he owned two factories thatmade pressure relief pads for disabled people. I told himabout my problem and he came back the next day withmany types of memory foams for me to try. It gave methe incentive to make one for myself.

The first day of testing was very fruitful and gave meample proof of the benefit of “Shock Absorbency” andwhich type of memory foam to use for my design. As Itrotted around the arena on my horse, I instantly felt painfree for the first time in years! My back from top tobottom felt relaxed and normal, even my riding positionseemed to return instantly. After I fractured my back, Itended to hold myself in a brace position for fear ofsudden unwelcomed movement. To feel secure again wasand is great feeling for me.

Suddenly my horse leapt over an object, which he sawbefore I did, I lost my seat and came crashing down ontothe saddle in a most undignified manner. With my backbeing in such a fragile state, that sort of impact wouldhave put me out of action for at least a week. I sat therefor a moment expecting the normal unbearable shootingpains up my spine and down my legs, but nothinghappened. Since that day I have not looked back, I havebeen able to ride without any impact problems occurringfrom my seat, plus no after pain, so I can ride morefrequently. After trialling this seat pad for well over a yearI can honestly say I feel like I have my life back again.

I live in a very hilly part of West Yorkshire and comingdown hills would often flex my spine with the slightslipping motion in the saddle. Once my seat bones havefound their gravity in the seat pad, there is little to noflexing movement in my coccyx area (which again couldbe very painful).

Because the seat pad moulds to your own body shape, Ithink if anything, it lets you feel your horse’s movementmore so than sitting on a rigid leather saddle.

This memory foam does not spring up quickly like normalfoam, hence no loss of feeling when trotting up anddown, it stays in position for several seconds. It alsoremains flexible in sub zero temperatures, so no need toworry about leaving it in cold barns or tack rooms.Because memory foam distributes weight, it helps take acertain amount pressure of impact off the horses back.

Fabrics and fastenings I have chosen in the design for thispad are top quality and have a luxurious look and feel.

The pad was designed by myself, Mags Roxburgh, andthey are made in Great Britain by Griffin Nuumed.

I am an advanced endurance riderwho has been competing for 6 years. Ihave been using the seat saver pad fromStable Environment for the past 18months and it has been a revelation. Thelower back pain which I had sufferedfrom after riding, the consequence of acar accident 14 years ago, vanished. Ireally began to appreciate how much ithelped when recently I rode a horsewithout it and the lower back painreturned with a vengeance. It is easy tofit, use and keep clean. I would highlyrecommend using it from any age to helpprevent or relieve back ache.
