You must see a doctor regularly when you are pregnant. Doctor will conduct health checkups. The health checkups are for finding out if you and your child are well and healthy. When you lodge Pregnancy Notification at Yao City Hall, you will receive coupons to reduce the cost of health checkups. Please make sure you take your Maternal and Child Health Handbook (Boshi Techo) and these coupons with you to the doctor.

You need about 500,000 yen to give birth to a child in Japan. If you are covered by health insurance, you will receive lump sum payment (about 400,000 yen) as a child birth allowance. For more details about this allowance, please ask your doctor on the first visit.

おきましょう。In Japan, mothers usually stay at hospital for around 5 days to give birth to a child. Please ask at hospital what you need to bring for the stay. You should prepare yourself and decide in advance how you get to hospital when the child was coming and there was no public transport.

When you give birth to a child, your doctor will issue you a “Birth Certificate”. You must take the “Birth Certificate” and Boshi Techo (Maternal and Child Health Handbook) to Yao City Hall within 14 days of your child birth and lodge “Registration of birth”. You must decide on your child’s name before the registration.

Therefore, children don’t need to make the decision until they turn 21 years old. If you would like your child to do so, you must notify us that you would like your child to reserve the Japanese Nationality when you lodge your child’s Registration of Birth. If both parents were foreign nationals, please ask at the embassy or consulate of parents’ country.Procedures for nationality are different in each country.

2. Make a choice: There are cases that you won’t be able to let your child attend childcare center. Yao City Hall will decide and serve the families with higher needs first for their children to attend childcare center.

Children who hold foreign nationality will receive a letter of enrolment to public primary school. Please complete the application for enrolment at Yao City Hall. Health checkup and information meeting are held before your child starting school. It is important, you must attend both of above. After-school care is available for children whose parents are working and not at home until later in the afternoon. You need to apply for after school care before your child starts school. Please ask for more information at Yao City Hall.
