Cornucopia - Rog izobilja

U tehnici relativno neprozirne voštane enkaustike i prozirnijega ulja na platnu Jelavićeve slike pro-izlaze, izrastaju, kombiniraju, produbljuju jedno u drugome i žive jedno uz drugo...

Obiljem linije, mrlje, ekspresivnih (de)konstrukcija i amalgamom žestoke kolorističke eksplozije.

Autorov Rog izobilja na promatrača djeluje poput slikarsko-crtačkoga, a ipak estetskog virusa. Iz toga proizlazi i Jelavićeva kaligrafija apstrahiranih slikarevih ideograma: spojeva pisma i oblika, točnije, ru-kopisa i slike; konkretnoga u apstraktnome i apstraktnoga u konkretnome, jer prvobitne psihograme preobražava i uklapa u slikarski stvoreno obličje i osobno zapečaćen vizualni jezik kontaminiranoga hibrida: moderno-postmoderno-ekspresionističkoga, kaligrafskoga stila, ostvarena umjetnikovom mjerom ili ne-mjerom, osobnim klatnom vizualnoga obilja unutar formata slike... s ove i one strane svijeta. Gledano u totalu - slikarevu intuiciju prštavoga ekrana slike.

Vidimo žestoku slikarsku akciju koja proizvodi više intuicijsku i emotivnu, a manje intelektualnu re-akciju, katkad simboličkih svojstava poput akromatskog, a simbolički vatrenog apstrahiranoga križa te aluzivnim simbolima prirode, praprirode, praživotinje, kao i posvojeno shvaćene osobne mitologije i kozmičkoga platna.

Pred Jelavićevim slikama ciklusa Rog izobilja promatrač ne stječe utjehu ni mir. Prije osjeća estetiku provokacije, agresivne vizualizacije, žestoke osjetilnosti, stalnoga nemira, neukroćene slikopisne ener-gije tvarnosti materije, distorzije fosilne estetike, stalnoga osjećaja kretanja i clasha slikovnih eleme-nata u općenitoj kakofoničnoj ljepoti i ružnoći 20. i 21. stoljeća.

Cornucopia - The Horn of Plenty

The series of paintings (encaustic and oil on canvas) Cornucopia – The Horn of Plenty (2013-2016) by Dalibor Jelavić (1949) was conceived and created as a totally satiated visible peak of a subconscious painting eruption. The work is that of one of the most important Croatian postmodernists in the field of the seemingly literally abstracted modern and modernist, in the all-field of the diverse, en-tangled comprehensiveness of the postmodern – to today’s post-postmodern, or modern after the postmodern!? - the digital galaxies of the empire of information which are the power (depending on whose hands) and which with a visual transmutation are rapidly creating an ever more virtual world. This world is becoming less realistic, an experientially overheard psychological flow of con-sciousness and the corporeality of the existential ‘I’ form and analogical, objective, moreover like a world of an easel of images.

In the technique of relatively non-transparent waxy encaustics and transparent oils on canvas Jelavić’s paintings emerge, grow, combine, reinforce one another and live alongside one another… In fact, they reflect the vision of Jelavić’s conscious-subconscious process of creation; perceptions and manifestations of the artist’s internal image which transforms into vibrant and pulsating materi-al, and matter is at the same time energy that creates traces of drawings and colours inside the ener-getic field of the canvas, adding their own wild-expressive, thorny and sharp, and a colouristic lavish human touch or the touch of the beast, which is seemingly completely impulsive, orderly chaotic and intuitive, like the method of expressive controlled automatism equally applicable to the poetics of surrealism from which the term also originates, each type of expressionism, action painting, art bruta, tachisme or abstract expressionism with which sometimes unilaterally and simply the artist’s opus is linked. Dalibor Jelavić in the essence of his opus was never literally an abstract painter, which the title also confirms: primarne figurativnosti (primary figurativeness) (Zdenko Rus).

The idea of Cornucopia, its concept, motif, form, mark, figure, the symbol in Jelavić’s painting is hid-den, allusive, stylised and deformed, camouflaged. The abundance of lines, smudges, of expressive (de)constructions and an amalgam of fiery colouristic explosions.

The artist’s Horn of Plenty acts on the observer like a painting-drawing, and yet, aesthetic virus. From this also emerges Jelavić’s calligraphy of abstracted painters’ ideograms: the connections of letters and forms, more precisely, of manuscripts and images; of the concrete in the abstract and the ab-stract in the concrete, because it transforms and fits the original psychographs into a painter’s cre-ated form and an individually sealed visual language of a contaminated hybrid: a modern-post-modern-expressionistic, calligraphic style, created with an artist’s measure or non-measure, with a personal pendulum of visual abundance within the format of a painting … from this and that side of the world. The artist transforms all that we see in the detail, in the structure of the cracks, the cuts and the winding connected flow of blood and the unrestrained forms of nature, man, animals or the world of wild vegetation, as in the paintings of other artists, but in essence we are hinting only

Page 7: HRVATSKI MUZEJ TURIZMA Umjetnički paviljon „Juraj Šporer ... katalog.pdf · On the front cover: Cornucopia / The Horn of Plenty, 2016, encaustics on canvas, 120 x 100 cm ... (de)constructions

at the cosmic dimensions with a look through the telescope of a universal canvas, the visible explo-sions of stars, the movements of galaxies, the spreading of space or with a camera at the recorded earthly eruptions of volcanoes, as well as the microscopic observation of the fossilised remains of plants and protozoa, everything from the elemental forms of life, cells, molecules, atoms, the nuclei of atoms. We observe Jelavić’s imago from the details: the purposeful form of the artist’s lines which pours into the painter’s calligraphy, and that into a painting. Seen in total - the painter’s intuition of a lively screen of images.

We see a fiery painting action which produces a more intuitive and emotional, yet less intellectual reaction, sometimes of symbolic features like achromatic, and a symbolic fiery abstracted cross and the allusive symbols of nature, primal nature, protozoa, as well as the adopted understood personal mythology and cosmic canvas.

In front of Jelavić’s paintings The Horn of Plenty series the observer does not gain comfort or peace. Before them they feel the aesthetics of provocation, an aggressive visualisation, a fiery sensuality, a constant unease, an untamed imaged energy of the substantiality of matter, the distortion of fos-silised aesthetics, a constant feeling of movement and a clash of painted elements in the general cacophony of beauty and ugliness of the 20th and 21st centuries.
