HSC development in Taiwan
Shiang-Yu Wang (王祥宇 )Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics
Academia Sinica
Background• Instrumentation capability is one of the
major research topic in ASIAA
• Development of WIRCAM in CFHT successfully finished in 2005
• Long term relationship with Japan
• Promote collaborations in Asian region
• Discussion with Subaru began in 2006
Hyper SuprimeCam
HSC fits IAA’s interests both in the science and technical sides
Our Role in HSC
• Mechanical Shutter• Filter exchanger • CCD emulator?• Optical and Mechanical
components?
Tight space and weight limits of the HSC makes it challenging
Specifications for shutter
• Time Repeatability : 1%
• Time Accuracy : 0.01 s
• Shortest exposure time : 1s
• Maximum Speed : 800 mm/s
• Operation Temperature : -10 to 10C
• Weight ~25Kg
• 15mm thickness at shutter body and 120mm diameter of the drums
Major activities in IAA
• Extract system design and specifications form Subaru last June
• HSC team formed in IAA• ARL to be the major contractor for the two
systems • Fabric material purchased for strength test• Regular meeting with ARL
Aeronautical Research Lab. (ARL)
• Government funded Military research laboratory– Major jet fighter development center in
Taiwan
• Long term collaboration on the SMA project with good partner spirit.
• Main contractor carrying out the ALMA EA FEIC.

Projected Milestones
• Shutter components ready in March
• Prototype of shutter system to be finished in May.
• Detailed interface defined in May.
• System fabrication starts in late 2008.
• Ready for delivery in early 2010.
