More often than not, the trees helped break the fall. Nijo-jo CastleNijo-jo Castle was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu as a residence during his visits to Kyoto. The majestic Ninomaru Palace—a national treasure—is open to the public. As visitors walk slowly along the corridors here, the floorboards underneath creak and squeak with every step. It is believed these sounds are intentional and acted as a means to prevent criminals from sneaking around.

Kitano-tenmangu ShrineKitano-tenmangu Shrine is a shrine with close ties to academia and calligraphy. The shrine is also a popular destination for viewing plum blossoms and autumn foliage. Those who visit the shrine on the 25th day of the month will also be treated to festival held in honor of the shrine’s deity.

Ginkaku-ji TempleWith its characteristic “unfinished” appearance, Ginkaku-ji Temple offers a prime example of the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi (of beauty in imperfection and simplicity). Here, visitors can learn about Higashiyama culture, which adopts the ideals and aesthetics of Zen Buddhism and the concept of wabi-sabi. Given the temple’s name, many visitors expect the walls to be lined with silver foil (similar to the golden walls of Kinkaku-ji), only to learn that the construction of the silver walls was never completed. A quick hike up the nearby hillside offers a commanding view of not only the temple but also the city of Kyoto stretching out beyond.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple UNESCO World Heritage Site

Kiyomizu-dera Temple is easily Kyoto’s most popular temple. The iconic supports for the stage under the main hall were assembled without the use of nails. In Japan, the phrase “Dive off the Kiyomizu stage” is commonly used to mean “take a leap in the dark” or “make a bold decision.” Historically, however, records show that jumping from the stage was not as risky as the phrase makes it out to be, with 82% of those who actually did tempt fate surviving. More often than not, the trees helped break the fall. The temple is also known as a popular destination for viewing autumn foliage and cherry blossoms, for receiving good fortune in love from the two “love stones” at Jishu-jinja Shrine located within the temple grounds, for making a wish at Otowa Waterfall, and for much more at the many interesting sights found within.

concourse that connects to

Hachijoguchi.

Karasuma Gojo2

Nearby Byodo-ji Temple was

established when a statue of

Yakushi Nyorai was drawn from

the sea and enshrined in 997.

The principle image of Yakushi

Nyorai is a Buddhist statue from

the ninth century and is one of

Japan’s three Nyorai.

3 Nijo-jo Castle4

The Shinsenen Garden adjacent

to Nijo-jo Castle, said to be the

only site remaining from the

original Heian-period Kyoto, is

home to the only "eho-sha" shrine

in Japan, which is reoriented in a

favorable direction (eho) on New

Year’s Eve to allow visiting in a

favorable direction.

6

To go to Arashiyama, you can walk

5 minutes from this stop to Kitano-

Hakubaicho Station (on the Randen

Line). This line is useful for visiting

world heritage sites Ryoan-ji and

Ninna-ji Temples, Japan’s largest

Zen temple Myoshin-ji Temple, TOEI

Kyoto Studio Park, and Arashiyama.

Kinkakuji Temple(Golden Pavilion)7

To take a stunning pamphlet-like

photo, take one together with the

"mirror-image Kinkaku" on the

mirror pond, Kyokochi. The

Rikushu-no-matsu pine in front

of the hojo quarters is more than

600 years old. The view of Kinkaku

from the Sekka-tei tea house is

beautiful around evening.

Daitokuji Temple8

There are a number of small

temples within the Daitokuji

Temple, famous for the Buddhist

monk Ikkyu-san. Daisen-in is

known for its rock garden.

Zuiho-in Temple was created by a

feudal lord also a Christian follower.

Ryogen-in Temple is an example

of a kokedera moss temple.

Kyoto Imperial Palace(Doshisha Univ.)9

University cafeterias and cafe

restaurants are open to the general

public. Wake no Kiyomaro is

enshrined in nearby Go’o-jinja

Shrine, and is a guardian deity

of the lower limbs. The only

nobleman’s residence in Japan,

that of the Reizei family, is open

twice a year in spring and autumn.

Heian-jingu Shrine / Okazaki Park

10

The Heian-jingu Shrine, ROHM

Theater Kyoto, Kyoto Municipial

Kyocera Museum of Art, National

Museum of Modern Art, and Kyoto

City Zoo are within walking

distance. At "Toni Toni", people can

experience the fun of period

festivals 365 days a year. Look up

at the shrine’s large torii gate

from below!

In addition to the regular exhibitions at the

Kyoto National Museum, you might see

big treasure at the special exhibition!

In the Chishaku-in Temple, fusuma

drawings by Tohaku Hasegawa during

the Momoyama period (an examplary

painter around 1600) are displayed. Don‘t

miss the longest wooden structure in

Japan at Sanjusangen-do Temple!
