Essay. My career in a big company.

My favorite business book is “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. It’s the best book from Harvard Business
Review rating. I started to read this book because I have a dream. This dream is from my childhood.
When I was young I passed by dimmed light from Moscow windows after my lectures in Moscow
Center of Continuous Mathematical Education. I wanted to be on the other side of glittering glass, to be inside
this sparkling windows. It took place because there were different people inside. This people were with their
ideas and desiring. This people were with their thoughts, their disappointment and aims, their past and future.
There was a small time machine with it’s inhabitants living their unique life inside every window. They were
tired of everyday work. I wanted to save them from routine and make their life better. I want to “do well”. But
then I couldn’t understand how.
Later I knew that there is another Windows which can make your life better even
tomorrow with global network. Connecting our sparkling windows and people inside them by
internet we can try to bring them together. We couldn’t even imagine that it can be true. This
people didn’t know each other yesterday. We can overcome physics barriers and see a
miracle. Only this people live who wants a miracle. Realization of this idea is prototype of
global information space. It became possible because of this idea of creation a miracle, creation something
occurring everywhere. This is an example of how the best managers can make dreams come true.
I am not Gates, but I had a sense. I stayed in front of our big world and understood that it’s my world.
It’s simultaneous very very huge and trifling. I think that people who came up to understanding global business
know this. Big companies feel that they can do everything with this world with best managers and they are
responsible for our life. Earlier only top managers in big companies could understand this. But now even a
manager in small company can feel this sense using Internet. You started to expand your mind, think globally.That’s why first of all I started to study computer science. Now I know how is functioning our Internet
from physical level to applied level. I feel that time is now for different managers with global informational
vision. Time was going on and I acquired strong skills in mathematics, in computer science, in economics. I
won the Microsoft competition, published in different issues, attended conferences, worked in different
companies and became a head of IT department. I started to give an IT experience for younger generation,
started to lecture in High School of Economics.
At my first work I managed only computers. It was our school class. Than in a transatlantic corporation
I was a manager of small projects. Years later I received an experience of managing small sport business. At

that time I understand that I can be not a simple manager but a top manager in a big company. All that is
necessary is business knowledge.
Idea has no value. Only realization of this idea has it. Idea is simultaneous priceless and valueless. We
have even special reviews of ideas for venture business. You can bring them and realize for free. They has no
patent, no pretensions from author. Bring them and do! But it’s very complicated to materialize this ideas.
That`s why I consider that manager is the most important person and highly critical figure in
business. It’s a big responsibility for our world to be a manager in a big company.
How to become the great manager? May be you need to read Good to Great by Jim Collins
and Funky Business: Talent Makes Capital Dance by Kjell Nordstrom and Jonas
Ridderstrale? May be you need to train your idea generation by Edward de Bono’s
Thinking Course? Or you need to practice in managing animals before humans by Karen
Pryor «Don’t shoot the dog»? May be you should simply prepare for GMAT, PMI and
Executive MBA from Sinerghia institute and go for your work with a clear conscience? Now I am solving this
problem every day and use every opportunity. I collect every useful skills and ideas in by baggage, read every
interesting book about business, study best practices in management, learn business processes in different
companies, participate in discussion with top managers from different companies. Of course, the list above is
not full. I even use an opportunity to develop my manager skills in bringing up my little daughter and in
training my students in High School of Economics. And I highly appreciate your initiatives to help new
generation of young managers.
What more practices I will implement to myself as a manager in a big company? As a growing manager
first of all I will hold the principle by Darwin Smith from Kimberly-Clark: “If you can’t prove for your
colleagues that you need to lead minimal, for example, 15 people to cope with the assigned duties, you will lead
zero people”. And another thing I will work on – the major management skills such as delegation of powers and
ability to listen.
In the 21th century of global informatization it is not the problem of searching
opportunities but choosing them correctly in order the aim to be the best manager. If you
want to be a manager in a big company you need to choose them correctly. You need to
learn to distinguish between bad and best practices. You need to have the best mentors,
the best teachers. And then my childhood dream will come true. Everybody has a chance
for self-actualization under the auspices of the very best and competent manager.
That’s why I want to use a chance to receive more practical skills and knowledge
from your course in managing. Thank you.
