IMG ACADEMY INSIDER | SUMMER 2015 2

Under the guidance of new head football coach Kevin Wright, the Ascenders are looking to take another step forward to the ultimate goal of a national title in 2015.

IMG Academy Football has the potential to field the most aggressive offensive and defensive units in the country. The offense will be led by the nation’s #1 rated signal caller, Shea Patterson, an Ole Miss verbal commit who took home Elite 11 MVP honors over the summer while lighting up the 7v7 circuit. He will be complemented by a talented supporting cast that includes veteran returning running backs Tony Jones and Jack Wegher, who committed to Notre Dame and Purdue, respectively. The tailback duo combined for 1,417 yards and 25 rushing scores in 2014. Another couple of new faces to the program are tight end Isaac

Nauta, regarded as the top tight end in the nation, and wide receiver Drake Davis, who was one of the fastest rising wideouts in the nation prior to taking a year off to focus on soccer in 2014. The team will also boast one of the most physical offensive lines, anchored by the likes of Ohio State pledge Tyler Gerald and rising junior center Cesar Ruiz.

Defensively, the Ascenders defensive line has no rival in terms of potential. Consensus five-star defensive end Shavar Manuel and class of 2017 five-star prospect Josh Kaindoh are two of the most feared pass rushers in America, and will bookend a line that features Malik Barrow, an Ohio State commit, and junior tackle Cam Spence. The linebacking corps is led by the likes of Rahshaun Smith, Northwestern commit Jango Glackin and junior Anthony Jordan. Senior LSU commit Saivion Smith will also look to pick up where he left off after notching five non-offensive touchdowns a season ago, helping the Ascenders achieve a 10-1 overall record.

IMG ACADEMY FOOTBALL ASCENDS AMONG NATION'S BEST

Other notable playmakers this season include DB Bryce Beard, WR Kjetil Cline, OL Curtis Dunlap, ATH Londyn Craft, WR Emmanuel Green, TE Tre McKitty, ATH Elvis Hines, and Spencer Perry.

This year’s squad will also be challenged early and often, facing the most difficult schedule in the nation. The 2015 slate features matchups against four of the nation’s top-50 programs, according to the National High School Football rankings. The season opens against national #39 American Heritage (Miami, Fla.) for the Kickoff Classic on August 22. Through the year, the Ascenders will also take on Paramus Catholic (#18, New Jersey), DeSoto (#7, Texas) and Bergen Catholic (#35, New Jersey).

Be sure to check out the Ascenders on ESPNU on August 30th at 2:00 p.m. EST versus Miramar HS and on ESPN2 on October 23rd at 7:00 p.m. EST versus Paramus Catholic HS.

After impressive spring campaigns, the IMG Academy Baseball Program was well represented in the 2015 MLB First Year Players Draft. First off the board was pitcher Brady Aiken, selected in the first round (#17 overall) by the Cleveland Indians. He was followed by his teammate Jacob Nix in the third round by the San Diego Padres (86th overall). Varsity ace Logan Allen heard his name called by the Boston Red Sox in the eighth round (#231 overall). Allen signed with the Sox, and made his rookie league debut in July. Allen’s first outing was limited to one inning that resulted in a strikeout and a pair of ground outs. Rounding out the list was infielder L.T. Tolbert who was selected by the New York Mets in the 34th round.

Alumna Kaeli Jones, Class of 2014, made history on the Suncoast Ladies Tour. Her three round, 3-under 213, gave her the distinction of being the first-ever champion on the freshly minted Tour and the low amateur at the event held at Black Bear Golf Club in Eustis, Fla. As a freshman for the South Alabama Jaguars, Jones appeared in six events with a stroke average of 77.93, good for second on the team.

Correa appeared in all 37 rounds for USF, picking up a win and six top-10 finishes on the season. He helped lead the USF Bulls to the NCAA Championships after the team captured the conference championship. The Chilean sensation finished off his summer by winning the Mexican International Invitational, which automatically qualifies him for the U.S. Amateur Championship in Illinois.

LINKALUMNI

The IMG Academy Basketball Program wrapped up the year on a historical note. Alumnus Satnam Singh was chosen in the second round of the NBA Draft (#52 overall) by the Dallas Mavericks. With the selection, Singh is the first-ever Indian-born player selected in the Draft. Singh was not the only alumni selected, as he was preceded by the Class of 2014’s Chris McCullough (Rd. 1, #29) who was taken by the Brooklyn Nets. The NBA Pre-Draft trainees also fared well with Cam Payne (Rd. 1, #14 – Oklahoma City Thunder) and J.P. Tokoto (Rd. 2, #58 – Philadelphia 76ers) both being selected.

HOME GROWN

Tyler Turner, a member of the Class of 2014, was selected to represent Orlando City SC at the 2015 Major League Soccer Homegrown Game in July, coached by U.S. Soccer and LA Galaxy legend Landon Donovan. Turner and the other Homegrown players faced off against Club América in Colorado. Turner initially signed with Orlando City as the youngest player in team history in 2014, and was among the first to sign an MLS contract with the club. This season, Turner has appeared in four games and started two, seeing time primarily as a right back.

Since her time as a junior trainee at IMG Academy, Serena Williams has developed into one of the most prolific players of this generation with 21 career Grand Slam titles to her credit. With consecutive wins at the 2015 Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon, Williams is two titles away from the rarest feat in tennis if she wins this year’s U.S. Open in September and the WTA Tour Finals in November. A Super Slam can only be achieved by holding all Grand Slam and Tour Finals titles in a single calendar year. The feat has never been accomplished within a single calendar year, however, Williams currently has a non-calendar year Super Slam going back to the 2014 U.S. Open. A non-calendar Super Slam was only achieved one other time in 1987 (Steffi Graf).

IMG Academy alumnus and recent University of Washington graduate, Cheng-Tsung Pan, carded his first career professional victory on Sunday at the PGA TOUR Canada Players' Cup. Pan turned in a 5-under 66 in the final round to seal the win by two strokes over Sweden's Robert Karlsson. The Taiwan native finished with a total of 15-under 269 for the event.

Kei Nishikori captured his 10th career pro title at the 2015 Citi Open in Washington D.C. In the final, he bested John Isner, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Notably, Nishikori also avenged his loss to Marin Cilic at the 2014 U.S. Open, defeating Cilic in the semis, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. With the title win, Nishikori matched his career high ranking of #4 ATP.

RECORD RUN

IMG Academy trainee Su Bingtian achieved quite a milestone in Asian athletics when he tied the continental record in the 100m dash with an impressive 9.99s run at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore. Bingtian became the first-ever Asian-born athlete to run a sub-10 in the event. His performance was enough to take bronze in the event, behind only United States sprinters Tyson Gay (9.88s) and Mike Rodgers (9.90s). Bingtian eclipsed the Chinese record of 10.00s set by Zhang Peimeng, also an IMG Academy trainee.

The Cleveland Cavaliers executed a trade in January that brought long-time IMG Academy trainee Iman Shumpert to the team from the New York Knicks. Immediately, Shumpert became an important role player who shot 41% from the floor in 38 games. In the playoffs, Shumpert found another gear, starting 16 of 20 games and averaging nearly 35 minutes per game contributing lockdown defense with 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game. Despite Shumpert's performance, tthe Cavs could not overcome the Golden State Warriors, losing the title in six games.

At the Gala dei Castelli in Bellinzona, Switzerland, IMG Academy trainee Tianna Bartoletta won the women's 100m dash. Bartoletta paced the field with an 11.07 after winning her earlier heat in 11.09. She finished a full tenth of a second ahead of runner-up Mujinga Kambundji of Switzerland (11.17).

IMG Academy alumnus Brett Gravatt, a member of the class of 2013, was a standout defender for the Penn State Nittany Lions soccer program before a spinal injury suffered in a snowboarding accident derailed his collegiate career. However, the Dunn Loring, Virginia native, who was invited to the Dallas Cup three times while at IMG Academy and spent time training in Barcelona and Holland, has not let it stifle his appetite for competition. Less than a year after his accident, Gravatt is taking aim at wheelchair racing.

“So far it’s going really well, and having an athletic background made it really easy to jump right into it,” said Gravatt of his transition.

“Every day I’m making huge progress and it’s really exciting.”

Over the summer, Gravatt qualified for the 2015 National Junior Disability Championships, held in Union City, New Jersey. Gravatt, racing for Team PSU Ability, competed in the 100m, 200m, 800m and 1500 track events, in addition to discus, javelin and shot-put in field events. He proved that he really is making huge progress. He won the U23 T53 class in both the 100m, 800m and 1500m races, with times of 19.68s, 2:15.05m and 4:06.00m, respectively. He even won all of his throws, with distances of 16.02m (discus), 13.4m (javelin) and 5.84m (shot).

BRETT GRAVATT

Brett Gravatt was a standout soccer player for the Penn State Nittany Lions in 2014

He noted that the longer distance races are his favorite. Perhaps that is why he bested the runner-up in his class by nearly 45 seconds in the 800s.

Gravatt discovered Paralympic sports and wheelchair racing while going through rehab at the Shepherd Rehab Center in Atlanta, Georgia. After a chance visit from Paralympic sprinter Jarryd Wallace, he became aware that he could still compete at a high level and was hooked.

Gravatt remarked, “At the (Shepherd Rehab Center), they do a really good job at showing you what you can still do.”

However, it was his unwavering work ethic that pushed him through to such early success in his new sport. A work ethic, he says, was reinforced during his time as a student-athlete at IMG Academy.

“It was a pretty natural transition with the work ethic I developed,” said Gravatt. “The whole experience at IMG and facing adversity – winning games, losing games – you develop a certain mentality as an athlete and in everything you do.”

Gravatt, who initially signed with the Akron Zips in 2013 before transferring to Penn State the following season, keeps an infectiously positive attitude from day to day. He also has a keen sense of humor in spite of what others perceive as a disability.

“If you can’t laugh at yourself, life will be pretty rough,” exclaimed Gravatt. “It makes it easier for me that people see that I am in a good mood, and that I still have fun and hang out with friends.”
