What is IMT-2000?• IMT 2000 is ITU’s vision for single

unified standard for 3G Mobile systems• IMT stands for International Mobile

Telecommunications and 2000 represents both the scheduled year for initial trial systems and frequency range of 2000MHz

IMT-2000 Standards• 11 proposals for terrestrial

systems and 6 for Mobile satellite systems are submitted by Standards developing Organizations to ITU in 1998

• All these proposals have been accepted by ITU as IMT-2000 standards

Characteristics of IMT-2000• Used worldwide• Used for all mobile services• Support packet switched and circuit

switched transmission• Offer high data rates up to 2 Mbps• Offer High Spectrum efficiency

What is UMTS?• Universal Mobile

Telecommunications system is one of the most important of IMT-2000 standards

• Is 3G Standard• Is proposal to ITU for 3G Mobile

telecom services

UMTS Specifications• UMTS Specifications are

standardized and released by 3GPP (Third generation partnership project)

• First release of UMTS is R99• R99 is renamed as Release 3• Subsequent releases are named as

Release 4 and Release 5

Target Data Rates of UMTS• 144 Kbps for Rural outdoor• 384 Kbps for Urban outdoor• 2048 Kbps for Indoor use

Technologies for IMT 2000• WCDMA• WTDMA• TDMA/FDMA• OFDMA• ODMA Out of the above ETSI has

selected WCDMA and WTDMA

Paired Spectum• Frequencies reside in paired bands

are of equal bandwidth• WCDMA is adopted for paired

Spectrum for FDD operation

UNPAIRED SPECTRUM• Downlink Bandwidth is much more

than the uplink bandwidth• WTDMA is adopted for unpaired

spectrum for TDD operation

Spectrum for IMT-2000• 1920-1980 MHz for U/L (For FDD) • 2110-2170 MHz for D/L (for FDD)

• 1885-1920 MHz for U/L (For TDD)• 2010-2025 MHz for D/L (For TDD)
