In strict time – Period of oscillation of a pendulum
Abstract Seit Tausenden von Jahren wird die Zeit gemessen.

A simple pendulum consists of a weight suspended from a piece of string. Build a pendulum using the materials provided. Make sure that it doesn’t hit the floor, table, etc. and that the weight is tied securely.
1. Which parameters might influence the period of oscillation? Make a list:
____________________________________________________________________________________
2. Start with the first parameter on your list.
Think about a suitable experiment and the best way to measure the data needed.
No idea? Have a look at LH 2.
3. How long does one oscillation take?
→ Perform three trials of this experiment and calculate the mean of your results.
→ Vary the chosen parameter at least three times. (e. g. halve, double, redouble... its value)
→ Record the time it takes for one oscillation. Is it best to start at the highest or the lowest position?
→ It is too difficult to measure one oscillation. Measure five instead and divide the time measured by 5.
Make your measurements and write down your results. (The blank row at the end is left for the evaluation
of your data.) Check e.g. directly or indirectly proportional, quadratic relationship.

4. Plot your data in a coordinate system (y-axis: period of oscillation).
Use a reasonable scale. Describe the form of the function graph and classify it (straight line, parabola, hyperbola, graph of a square root function,…).
5. Which parameter(s) affected the period of oscillation?
______________________________________________________________________
6. Write down sources of error in the experiment and how to avoid them.
______________________________________________________________________
______________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________

______________________________________________________________________
7. Extra task: Do you remember harmonic oscillations? Restoring force? Period of oscillation?
Try to figure out which physical quantities are needed to calculate the theoretical period of oscillation based on the results of your experiment. (Which quantities hide behind the numbers?)
Next, try to derive the period of oscillation from basic physical and mathematical principles.

LH 4 Lösung zu AB 1 Swinging pendulum (task 5 → parameter)
For small angles, the period of oscillation depends on the length of the pendulum, but not on mass or amplitude.
Note: Mass has no influence on the oscillation period of a string pendulum. If m is larger, FG is larger but the inertia increases, too. (mg = ma), so mass cancels out.
If the amplitude is larger, the masses travel faster from one side to the other, and vice versa.
