News from the Director’s Desk November 2017

November is Domestic Violence and Abuse Awareness month. With the release of the National statistics for South Africa 2017,

it is alarming to see the rise in incidents. This means that people are stepping up and making a case or reporting the incidents and looking for help and justice.

#me too campaign - woman identifying themselves with the abuses of the past and verbalizing the way in which they were abused and how they feel about what happened to them BLACK MONDAY – Protesting against the MURDER of innocent people (NOT just farmers, ALL innocent people) 16 Days of Activism begins on the 25 November and runs till 10 December – during which time various awareness campaigns and presentations will be take place.

When we look at the above we feel overwhelmed and out –numbered. What can we do to make a difference? How can we change a nation?

It starts with you, yes, each one of us must do his/her part and make a difference where we are: at home, at work, in the office, on the field or at the Gym, driving on the roads and highways. The ripples will affect and effect others to change and do their part and so we WILL change the Nation one person at a time. May we all be filled with peace and love for our fellow humans.

Thank you To Agnes who conducts and organises the Personal Growth and Counselling Skills training, to Rozanne for making sure we have the right skills and up to date information to help our clients. To Lucky for making sure the outreach centres are catered for. To Deryn who makes the appointments and keeps the main office flowing smoothly and to all the Volunteers and Probationers at LifeLine Pretoria - thank you for every session you have with a client, every phone call you take, you are there for that person and make a difference in their lives.

This is what makes LifeLine such a wonderful place. We work as a team and support each other.

The Secret of life: The more you give. The more you get. The more you laugh. The less you fret. The more you do unselfishly. The more you live abundantly. The more of everything you share. The more you’ll find that life is good and friends are kind. For only when we give away, enriches us from day to day. Unknown.

I hope you have purchased your new Diaries for the upcoming dates

for 2018

It’s going to get busy so have a place, to keep the dates and book your

Parents Resisting Rebellion

Greetings everyone, This month, I share learnings from my work with the Family Ministry. Rebellion is pride put into action. A rebellious thought says: 'I'm going to do what I want, no matter what anyone else says about it'. Pride gets us into rebellion, but stubborness is what keeps us there. Anyone who walks in rebellion carries selfishness in their hearts. The opposite of rebellion is obedience. Obedience brings peace, great security and the confidence of knowing we are where we are supposed to be, doing what we are supposed to do. A child first learns obedience through their parents who recognise and deal with early manifestations of a rebellious spirit. Parents dealing with a strong will change a child’s attitude. By resisting this display of rebellion, parents are able to stop it from becoming something major. As children get older, become adolescents or grow into adulthood, and if rebellion is already clearly manifested in their behaviour, discipline and teaching become harder. However, parents can still take advantage of their authority as parents. Don't be intimidated by a rebellious spirit. Be ready to meet the challenge with correction, discipline and teaching. Until next month, remain Blessed, Sheila.

Training Department

Hi, LifeLine Family Introduction

Only two moons reaming for 2017, this year had gone by very quick and for me it has been a roller coaster year with work life and personal life. In all these I have seen the power of God taking me through and for that I am grateful.

Training: Personal Growth Course – October / November 2017 Thank you to all the course facilitators who are presenting the current Saturday Personal Growth Course, which started on the 14 October 2017 and which will be completed on the 11 November 2017. This is our last training course for this year and there are twelve course participants, who are attending the course together with four facilitators.

Thus far, as I write this newsletter article, the course is progressing well and we will be presenting the second last session on Saturday. The course facilitators are Suzaan Lourens, Sisipho Jacobs, Martha Matjeni and Naeema Sulliman. Thank you once again to the facilitators for the great work they are doing. We have received positive feedback from the course participants on their evaluation forms.

As I have mentioned this is our last course for the year and these course participants will only attend the Lay Counselling Skills Course in January 2018.

Continuous Development Training

We had a once again a very informative and empowering Continuous Development Training session with Rozanne Ashworth. The training was based on Psycho-Pathology and Difficult Clients and I have personally learned a lot from the presentation. Even though I do not conduct counselling sessions myself it gave me a lot of insight into life and what we are dealing with as an organisation, our boundaries as well.

I hereby want to encourage all the volunteers and probationers who have not been attending the Continuous Development Training, to please attend them. We need to make sure that our counselling services are of a quality standard and that all our volunteers are well trained with the right skills and information to aid them during their counselling sessions.

Even though we are in the last two months of the year, the Continuous Development Training will still be taking place and I trusting that the volunteers will avail themselves to attend these informative training sessions.

For the upcoming training sessions, kindly see the training dairy at the end of this newsletter article.

Probationers

Congratulations to Barbara Schreiner who successfully completed her probation period and has gone solo. Thank you Barbara for all the effort put in during your probation, you have earned it.

Conclusion

As I conclude this article I want to wish all the volunteers and probationers who are writing exams all the very best. As you sit to take your exam, you are all in my thoughts and prayers. Till next time, Agnes Semono

Straight from Malashi

Hi there LifeLine family.

First of all I want to wish all the learners and students

the best of luck during their exams. I know that this

could be a taxing time; I hope and wish that all goes

well.

We have established a relationship with UNISA

Radio, where we now have a weekly slot on Tuesdays

at 12:00. We do talks covering different topics. I

have in the past years done talks at the same radio

station; however, this time, we are doing it on a regular basis. We are so grateful to

UNISA Radio for the given platform and I hope we can continue to reach out and

empower their listeners. I have already done two talks there, one on 10th October,

where we talked about Mental Health Awareness. After the show I went to Wits

University in Braamfontein to do a talk on the same topic. Talking about Mental

Health Awareness, Roxanne Ashworth, Kutlwano Semela and I did the exhibitions at

the Weskoppies Hospital in Pretoria West. We also participated in the group

dialogues.

We have also been doing counselling for Arcelor Mittal in Pretoria West. We go there

on Wednesdays from 09:00 – 13:00. Sean Prinsen, Naeema Sulliman and I have taken

turns in going there. Sometimes you get to see a person and sometimes you just sit

there without anyone coming in. On 31st October I went to McCarthy Toyota in

Centurion to do trauma debriefing for one of their workers and his wife. I appreciated

the fact that they also saw the need to get the wife to attend even though she is not their

employee. I believe that if both their worker and his wife are OK, they would then

have a productive worker, because if he is OK but his wife isn’t, well he would

somewhat be affected. That’s if and or we look at him holistically. He might be at

work but only to be worried about his wife at home. Immediately after the session, I

rushed to UNISA Radio at Sunnyside Campus to do a talk on Self-Awareness.

I believe that Self-Awareness is one of the most important skills that one should have

or develop. I did talk on Self-Awareness and Stress Management at the Christian

Brothers College (CBC) in Silverton on the 30th of October. There were about 300

learners plus some teachers. The feedback was positive and encouraging and I would

like to do such talks at different schools because sometimes these youngsters need

motivation. Some of them end up making uninformed decisions due to peer pressure,

situations from their dysfunctional homes and a sense of wanting to belong, and to be

loved.

Do you feel you have a calling . . . . . .

Both the Treasurer and the Secretary of the Management Board of LifeLine

Pretoria feel that it is time that younger people take over these

responsibilities, and do not intend standing for re-election at next year’s

AGM in June 2018.

If you are at all interested, please send an email to:

[email protected] telling us something about yourself and you

will be sent more information as to what is entailed in each of these voluntary

posts. You can also attend some of the Board meetings and only then do you

need to decide if you would like to stand for election. All LifeLiners, not only

counsellors or probationers are eligible.

Self-awareness, or an awareness of inner thoughts and feelings, rests at the core of a

person’s sense of self. People usually are not self-aware, but certain situations can

cause them to focus their attention inward, such as gazing into a mirror, standing in

front of an audience, or seeing themselves in a photograph or videotape. According to

original self-awareness theory, self-focused attention makes people more conscious of

their attitudes and beliefs.

We have been approached again by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and

Fisheries to do a talk on Gender Based Violence on 5th December. I did couple of

presentations for them in the past, including the one which I did a few weeks ago. We

are approaching the 16 Days of Activism against Women and Children Abuse and, as

usual, I believe we will be getting a lot of requests for talks and exhibitions.

Peace Unto You

Malashi
