SIGHTS & PLACES THAT YOU WILL SEE:
TengananTenganan is one of ancient home villages of the original inhabitants of Bali, scattered in the mountains of the eastern part of the island. They call themselves `Bali Aga`. A high wal laround their village, adds to the self-‐chosen isolation of this community, adhering to strict principles. This place is world famous for its ikat, the result of a very complicated form of weaving. While ikat may be common in East Indonesia, it was raised to perfection in Tenganan. Lombok, Sumba and Flores have similar products, but the intricate cloth of Tenganan is attributed with mystical powers. The Bali Aga are convinced that old cloth or gringsing will protect its owner from disease.
Goa Lawah Temple
It is easy to justify its nick name, Bat Cave Temple. Nobody knows exactly why, but hundreds of bats choose to reside in a cave behind one of the holiest shrines of Bali. According to a local legend, the bats provide food for a giant snake which is said to live in the cave. One of the most remarkable temples in Bali, it is located alongside a busy coastal road, leading from Denpasar all the way to the far eastern region of Bali. Opposite the road lies the fishing village of Kusamba with its dramatic black sand beaches is the black sandy beach.
Kusamba
A fishing and salt-‐making village, where you`ll see lines of colorful fishing perahu (outriggers) lined up on its dramatic black sand beach. Fishing is normally done at night and the `eyes` on the front of the boats help navigation through the darkness. East and west of Kusamba, the thatched roofs of salt-‐making huts can be seen along the beach. The place is famous for a very venerable temple, called the Goa Lawah or Bat Cave Temple.

SIGHTS & PLACES THAT YOU WILL SEE:
Besakih TempleThe renowned temple of Besakih is built against the southern slope of Gunung Agung, a violent yet sacred mountain for the Balinese. A sprawling complex of shrines, dedicated to an unknown number of gods, constitutes the religious center of Bali. On ominous days, Besakih brims with colorful activity. Row after row of women climb the temple stairs, proudly carrying a heavy load of flower and fruit offerings. They are meant to stabilize the Universe or to finalize a complicated religious ceremony. Besakih and surroundings, can easily be described as the holiest place on the island, covering an extended religious patchwork of shrines and temples, dedicated to kings and Gods. At any given time, you`ll walk together with numerous pilgrims as every Balinese is required to pay homage several times throughout the year.
Day 6, Sat Jul 18 2015 KINTAMANI -‐ UBUD (B)

Enjoy the marvelous vistas over Lake Batur, Gunung Agung, and Mount Batur, a smoldering volcanic cone right in the middle of a large caldera. Before heading for Ubud a visit to Penglipuran village, Gunung Kawi and Sebatu via tegallalang rice terrace. Arrive in Ubud in the afternoon, check in and at leisure.
SIGHTS & PLACES THAT YOU WILL SEE:
PenglipuranSituated in Bangli regency, Pengelipuran village is well-‐known for its tidy row of traditional Balinese entrance gates and its unique architectural traditions. The village has also succeeded in preserving its 75 hectare bamboo forest located in the northern part of the village. The Desa Adat, a well-‐known Balinese village institution, has played a consistent role from generation to generation in the preservation of local Balinese traditions. One of them is a strong commitment to the system of `ayahan desa` -‐ a philosophy committed to respecting the land on which the village stands. The village land may not be transferred to anyone without the knowledge of Penglipuran villagers. The bamboo forest`s future is therefore assured. The community members who are given pieces of bamboo forest ground usually fell bamboo trees once a year by selective cutting, leaving the younger ones intact.
Sebatu VillageSebatu, a small, lovely temple, built along a holy spring. This is one of the dedicated spots where the Balinese people fetch holy water for their numerous rituals and ceremonies. The name of Sebatu is related to the ancient story of King Mayadenawa and is steeped in Balinese folklore. There are several `holy spring` temples in Central Bali, but this one is considered one of the prettiest due to its setting in a valley east of the village bearing the same name. Often Balinese from every corner of the island make pilgrimages to similar temples like Tirta Empul, with their holy spings and pools. They seek to cleanse themselves spiritually or even to cure their physical ailments.
Gunung KawiGunung Kawi refers to a site of a series of 11th century tombs cut out from the rock face. To reach it,
6
you have to walk down a steep flight of some three hundred steps, through a massive rock-‐hewn archway, all the way to the sacred Pakrisan River. It`s an impressive spot, completely enshrined in a lush valley. There are lots of theories about the origins and function of the Gunung Kawi tombs or candi, as they are also considered as sacred temples. Most probably they were erected as memorials to kings from a long lost era -‐ possibly the 11th century -‐ and their queens. Before crossing the river, turn sharp left for the Queens` Tombs, a series of four huge, square-‐tiered reliefs, chiseled from the riverside cliff face to resemble temple facades. After crossing the Pakrisan River, you enter the actual Gunung Kawi temple complex, which contains an unusual cloister, complete with courtyard, rooms and cells, entirely cut from the ravine rock wall. This was probably built for the holy men who looked after the five royal tombs at the back of the temple complex. These are in better condition than the Queens` Tombs, and you can see the false doors and facades quite clearly defined.
Tegalalang Rice TerraceTegalalang Rice village located on the north-‐south road from Kintamani and Ubud. Various woodcarvings can be found in this village and its neighbors. Very colorful carvings of flowers, animals and other designs are displayed along the road, and of course a beautiful rice-‐field with coconut trees and small river valley. Grain terrace or rice terrace in Tegalalang is exactly situated within the hillsides above Ubud, this is a typical scene in Bali. The terraced rice-‐field is typical of the beauty of the Balinese countryside. During the growth period of the rice, the fields are periodic flooded. The Subak or irrigation cooperatives, regulate the allow of water and maintenance of irrigation networks. The water from single dam may be divided into douses and even hundreds of channel to irrigate the terraced Sawah, note how any-‐terraced field are served by this one particular manual serves.

Sangeh Monkey ForestSangeh Monkey Forest near the village of Sangeh, in southwestern Bali, has six hectares of forestland with giant nutmeg trees. The main attractions here are the hordes of funny yet wise Balinese monkeys inhabiting both the trees and the temple, Pura Bukit Sari, found in the heart of the forest. The monkeys of the forest are believed to be sacred and indeed will approach anyone paying respects at the temple. Monkeys have a special status in Hindu religion, and a number of other temples in Bali also boast a resident monkey population, respected by devotees and fed and photographed by tourists.
Taman Ayun TempleLocated in Mengwi, the 17th century royal temple sheds a magnificent light on the principles of traditional Balinese temple architecture. Very few other temples were constructed along such `ideal` lines. Three terraces blend harmoniously into one another, each of them representing different worlds, dedicated to the Negative and Positive Forces in the universe and the relationship between both. Candi bentars, the typical Balinese split temple gates, separate them from one another. The complex is surrounded by a beautiful pond, adding to the elegance of the place. The last and highest court, dedicated to the Gods, is only accessible for Hindus, but by walking around, you have an excellent view on the meru`s with their uneven roofs, a quintessential element of Balinese architecture.
JatiluwihA startlingly beautiful area of verdant, terraced rice paddies nestled in the shadow of Mount Batukaru, the second highest peak of Bali and one of the holiest In 2007 this area was nominated as a UNESCO world heritage site.

In this area, there is orchid garden with the collection of 320 orchid types from Bali, Java, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Sulawesi and also Irian Jaya. We can also meet the rose garden with the collection of various rose from rust colored until green chromatic.
Ulun Danu BratanTempleUlun Danu sits at the shores of Lake Bratan, the source of water for a large part of the island. It effortlessly combines Hindu and Buddhist elements into a unique sample of Balinese temple architecture The location on the shore of the giant lake effectively filling a crater formed thousands of years ago by a seismic blast of an extinct volcano, is significant. The lake supplies most of the drinkable water to large areas of Bali. Dense pine forests tumble down the slopes of Mount Bratan to the calm shoreline dotted with holy shrines.

Combining typical Hindu and Buddhist temple architecture, it is one of the most photographed temples of Bali. Moreover, it acquired the status of a kayangan jagat or directional temple, meaning it is revered by all Balinese across the island. Along wide highlands and strawberry farms, the road lead even further up into the mountains. After soaking up the spectacular view of the twin lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan, start your trek descending into the rain forest and learn how many of the local tropical plants have a medicinal use. On an open site in the forest sits almost unexpected the eerie Pura Dalem Tambingan which is dedicated the deceased ancestors. Continue downwards until you reach Pura Ulun Danu Tamblingan, dedicated to the Goddess of Lake Tamblingan. From this point, the view to the lake with the surrounding lush rain forest is inspiring. A short boat ride on a traditional wooden canoe brings you to the other lake shore. Very few people venture out into this direction. During your trip it is so quiet you can hear the birds singing. Foreste slopes seal off this area from the rest of the world. On last leg of the trip, stroll along Pura Gubug, a masterly designed Hindu temple. It is one of the biggest and most impressive monuments ever erected by mankind, unobtrusively blending in with the splendid background of Menoreh mountain range. The terraced temple tells the times and lives of the Lord Buddha in well over 1.500 expressive reliefs. While climbing to the top, the faithful pilgrim received a full-‐length set of Buddhist teachings. Thus one can say the Borobudur is a prayer in stone ! The renovation, finished in the early eighties of last century,
12
sublimely reflects the will of man to preserve the past. Once enshrined by a wild jungle, it took more than ten years and great effort to renovate the monument. This gargantuan task got finished late last century. Now it belongs to one of the finest examples of Buddhist architecture. Originally Borobudur was part of a chain of four temples joined by a sacred path. Two of the other three temples have been restored and at those are well worth visiting. The third one is unfortunately beyond repair. Built in 800 AD, Mendut was rediscovered in 1834 and restored at the end of the nineteenth century as well. The exterior, while heavily decorated, is unremarkable. The three giant statues sitting inside, however, are exquisitely carved and marvelously preserved. Originally there were seven statues here; those that remain are the great three-‐meter Buddha, who, unusually, sits on a throne with his legs in front of him rather than in the lotus position, flanked by the Bodhisattvas Avalokitesvara and Vajrapani. One kilometre west of Mendut, on the banks of the river is Candi Pawon. This small building is dedicated to the Buddhist god of fortune, Kuvera. Unlike both Mendut and Borobudur, the temple does not have Hindu foundations but is wholly Buddhist.
