Entry Form

Message from Imogen Dolan, University of Essex Pole Club President. Hello and welcome to Inter University Pole Competition 2013-2014! Essex University are

delighted to be hosting IUPC for the second time running, with the competition being now in its fourth year. We had such fun organising it last year and seeing so many wonderful

performers, we can’t wait to host again! We also hope to carry on the successes of the previous competitions held by Bristol and Cardiff.

The Inter University Pole Competition is a chance for universities across the UK to showcase their students’ pole talents in a national competition in three categories – Beginner,

Intermediate and Advanced, with an optional Group Category. All competitors will get full feedback and there are no compulsory moves. The competition is sponsored by the PDC and aims to be a fair, ethical and structured competition ran by students for students.

To allow more universities to enter the competition this year, we have unfortunately had to cut down on the number of competitors per university. This year there will be one

competitor per university in each category. We feel that with up to 25 universities entering from across the UK, IUPC will be a true inter-university experience, with lots more unis

taking place! To tackle the limited amount of competitor spaces this year, we suggest that: Each university holds ‘preliminary heats’ for the competition if more than one person

wants to enter for a certain category. You could arrange an ‘in house’ competition in which your committee judges the best performer per category who will go on to represent your university.

Page 3: Info Pack IUPC 2014

Each university allows competitors to record their performances and then your

committee chooses their favourite one. Other competitors take place in the Group performance. The Group Category is for

any student who is not competing in a singles category, and whilst this is not a rule we feel that it would help give the competition opportunity to more students

Any student who for whatever reason does not get to compete at the competition attends the event and represents their University through support, helping out their

club with warming up, hair/make up, photography and cheering your university on.

We know that this is not ideal but we hope that our reasoning is understandable and that we are within limits when organising a competition, and allows for adequate timing of the event.

The PDC approved judging system follows on from last year’s lay out. There will be 3 performance poles, one for each category (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Each pole will be watched by 3 of our incredible judges, equalling a total of 9 of the UK’s most

respected pole industry people judging the competition. Each competitor will also receive professional feedback on their performance. We have provided 13 songs for all competitors

to choose from, 3 competitors who have chosen the same song will perform it alongside the other 2 categories to their respective judges, resulting in judges watching an entire category, letting them assess each competitor in a fair manner. We hope that this system will offer the

best opportunity to the competitors to be judged fairly and consistently. I would also like to emphasise that each competitor must feel very confident in their category, particularly in

Advanced. In the past some competitors were showing bad technique and dangerous execution, which compromises their safety. Our number one concern is your competitors’ safety on the pole.

We hope you enjoy picking your song of choice from our wide range of song choices. When we have your payment and place confirmed you will receive a Confirmation Pack including

list of legal moves per category, which follows the PDC syllabus. Levels 1-2 are beginner moves, Levels 1-4 are Intermediate moves and Levels 1-5 are Advanced moves. In the

Confirmation Pack, we hope to provide you with a list of legal moves and the criteria for judging, so IUPC is a more structured competition than previous years. On the day, we will provide you with activities to keep you busy, such as performances by guest judges and we

will be joined by several sponsors and their stalls showcasing their pole wears!

We hope to bring together universities from all across the UK who share the same passion for pole, promoting good relationships between universities and celebrating pole dance between individuals regardless of level or university. Our wonderful sponsors also have

provided some amazing prizes for the winners and the runners up of each category. We look forward to a fantastic day of pole!

Any questions please get in contact with us either by my email: [email protected], our competition and performance secretary’s email, Olivia Mella, [email protected] or our facebook page:

What is the IUPDC?

The Inter-University Pole Dance Competition is the UK’s competition for University

student pole athletes aiming to showcase the depth and breadth of University pole

talent in the UK. The IUPDC will give University student dancers the opportunity to compete against

their peers through our three single categories – Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced – and group category.

The IUPDC will ensure our system of judging is fair, ethical and transparent at all

stages of the competition. Our judging panel will be made up of a team of experienced professionals from the

pole industry. The IUPDC aims to reflect the views of the pole community as a whole, taking all

feedback on board and working with the pole community to develop a competition we are all proud of.

The IUPDC will educate members of the public and the student community on the

true athleticism and artistry involved in pole dance and help to raise the profile of pole dance as a sport.

How does the IUPDC work?

Universities will be able to enter 1 competitor per category:

are performed, points will be deducted. Any move that is not listed as legal will be assumed to be illegal (see the illegal moves section).

The music for all singles categories will be limited at 3 minutes and the final cut

version of all the songs will be sent to Universities on confirmation of their space via C.D allowing competitors the opportunity to copy the songs to their own laptops and

music players Each University is permitted to submit one group entry of up to and including 6

people. There will be a charge of £5 per person in the group and the performers may not also be competiting in a singles category

The group routine music must be limited to 3 minutes in length; if the music is longer

than this it will be faded out at 3 minutes. There will be 3 X Stage Lite poles for the group routine and universities are permitted

to use any number of these (between 1 and 3). All poles will be static. Full feedback and scores will be given to every competitor after the competition if

Legal moves This year we have decided to use the Pole dancing community (PDC) syllabus as guidelines

for moves allowed in each category. If you are not aware of the PDC syllabus it includes over 300 moves, and breaks them down into 5 ability levels, starting at the basic beginner moves

at level 1 to advanced moves in level 5. The syllabus is available online to view for free at http://www.poledancecommunity.com/pdc-pole-dance-syllabus-v15-111, available to purchase as an interactive cd-rom from the PDC online store and as a book which breaks

down each move in different stages. We highly recommend that your competitors familiarise themselves with the PDC syllabus and abide by the legal moves for each category. Points will

be deducted for each move a competitors includes in their routine which is not in the legal moves list, so if you have any queries regarding a move please get in contact to check. Moves allowed for each category:

hours prior to the event.

Photography & Filming

Competitors agree to be photographed and filmed throughout the competition.

Photography and filming are not permitted within the competitor changing areas. All photography and footage remain the property of IUPDC. Competitors have no

right to compensation for photography and footage made as part of the competition. Competitors agree that all photography and footage can be used by IUPDC for

promotional, advertising, and commercial purposes.

Judging Information & Criteria Competitors should consider these criteria carefully prior to composing their competition routines.

Judges are requested to familiarise themselves with this document prior to the event. Judging criteria and guidelines will be discussed in detail before judging commences. General Information

The IUPDC will have 9 highly-experienced judges from the pole dancing and

performance community. There will be 3 judges per category.

Judges will be announced on the website prior to the closing date for entry. In the event of one of the judges being unable to attend, a substitute judge will take

their place. Competitors will be notified of any such changes as soon as a substitute is confirmed.

System of Judging Three competitors will perform the same song at the same time on three separate

poles (this allows for adequate timing of the event) and each will have a table of three judges in front of their pole. However, this time each pole will be designated to one category, so a competitor for beginner, intermediate and advanced will perform

at the same time to their judges table. This means that each category would be judged by the same set of judges and each judge would be judging the whole

performance, leading to better consistency of the judging for each of the categories and also meaning that the song list will now be one for everyone and not separated into categories. All judges will then judge the group category.

The scores from each of the judges will be totalled and the average score will be used to rank the competitors.

The top 5 scores from each category will be awarded points (5 for 1st place, 1 for 5th place) and these will be added to each University score sheet to determine the best

overall Uni.
