IMPORTANT 2018 DATES
“What would you do if you had one hundred
sheep and one of them wandered off?
Wouldn’t you leave the ninety-nine on the
hillside to go and look for the one that had
wandered away?
I am sure that finding it would make you
happier than having the ninety-nine that
never wandered off.
That’s how it is with your Father in Heaven.
He doesn't want any of His little ones lost.”
Matthew 18:12—14 (CEV)
Chances are there may be times when we will
wander off and sheepishly wonder how we will ever
find our way home. We don’t have to worry about
getting lost, as Jesus will find us.

From the
Principal…..
Last Friday we had a fantastic day at our Swimming Carnival. Well
done everyone on contributing to such a successful whole school
event. Thank you Mrs Cluse for again facilitating a fun filled
swimming experience. Thank you also to all our staff for the help and
support they provided to each other and to the students so that
everyone experienced an amazing day. Thank you also to our
parents who helped with different events throughout the day and to
our P & F Committee for providing us with tasty food to keep our energy levels up.
One thing that never changes in our school is the culture of community, that sense of
belonging. This is experienced first hand at whole school events like our Swimming Carnival.
We can all be very proud of the way our students encourage each other, support and help
each other, no matter what team they are cheering for. This special experience should not
be taken for granted. Again, as a team, together we do achieve great things.
Congratulations Eckermann on winning this year’s Swimming Carnival.
Pedal Prix 2018
A reminder to our Pedal Prix students and families that our first training session will be held this
Friday at the Eudunda Oval complex from 3.30pm to 5.00pm.
Pupil Free Day at Eudunda Area School
The Eudunda Area School will be having a pupil free day on Tuesday 13 March 2018. There will
be no DECD or Keller buses operating on this day. Please make alternative arrangements for
your children to be at school. The Kapunda bus will run as normal on this day.
Valuing Safe Communities
At St John’s we appreciate and value the commitment our parents have in giving their time to
help with excursions, going on camps, helping in the classroom and listening to reading. In the
past I have delivered a Valuing Safe Communities training session for parents who volunteer
their time in our school. Lutheran Education Australia has now implemented a simple online
training session that parents can access at no cost.
A letter will be sent home explaining how you can easily complete this process online. If you
have difficulty accessing the internet, please do not hesitate to come into school and
organise a time to access a computer here. It is compulsory for parents to complete this
training if you volunteer at the school. Once you have completed the session you will receive
a certificate. Please bring your certificate into the school so we can make a copy of this for
our records. Thank you again to all parents for your continued support.

Quality Schools Survey 2018
As mentioned in previous newsletters this year our school will be participating in surveys
managed by Research Australia Development and Innovation Institute (RADII). The surveys are
being conducted for the school by RADII under a contract with Lutheran Education Australia.
The data that is collected will be used by the school and Lutheran Education Australia to
develop strategies and implement initiatives to improve the quality of education offered by
Lutheran schools.
Students will receive an invitation to participate via their school email address and may
complete their surveys during class time.
In addition, parents and staff are invited to participate in the survey. We hope the parent
survey will help us to find out how well the school is managing the wellbeing of its students.
Parents will receive an email in early March 2018 from Dr Jean Thompson at RADII with an
invitation to respond to the survey online. Please check your Junk mail folder for the survey in
case RADII’s addresses are not listed in your address book. Better still, enter the email
address for Dr Thompson ([email protected]) in your address book.
All survey responses go directly to RADII and are not identifiable by the school, unless you wish
to indicate that you want your feedback to be identified. All data will be stored securely and
the anonymity of all participants is assured.
If you do not wish to participate in the survey or you do not want your child to participate,
please notify the school.
We encourage you to respond to the survey as this provides valuable feedback to the school.
When the feedback from the survey is received we will share the findings with you.

Swimming Carnival
Last Friday we held our annual Swimming Carnival at the Eudunda Swimming Pool. The morning
commenced with students nine years old and older participating in the Freestyle, Breaststroke,
Backstroke and relays and the eight year old and under participating in the noodle, kickboard and
swim events. There were also a few new events that ran for half a lap for students nine years and
over.
It was wonderful to see the great sportsmanship displayed by all students when encouraging and
cheering on students, not just from their own house but also from the other houses.
Special mention must be made of the following student who broke records:
Jaz Williams broke the 33m nine year old girls’ Backstroke record with a time of
45.73 beating Ashleigh Mickan’s record of 47.83 in 2009. Jaz Williams also
broke the 33m nine year old girls’ Freestyle record with a time of 35.13 beating
a 20 year old record from Lauren Bungey’s time of 35.46 set in 1998. This is a
tremendous achievement and we congratulate Jaz.
The afternoon’s tabloid events, which included students from Foundation to Year Seven enjoyed
such activities as ‘peg collect’, ‘tube race’ and ‘hoop relay’, which were very hotly contested.
The day’s swimming events concluded with a House Relay consisting of students, parents and staff.
At the end of the day’s events the results were announced with Eckermann finishing first with 313
points, followed by Ziersch with 310 points and then Dutschke with 229 points.
It was terrific to see the exceptional turn out of parents who attended the Carnival, assisted with
the events and supported their children. Mrs Nicole Milde, the P & F chairperson, presented the
shield to the Eckermann House Captains. William Schutz and Ebony Noack responded on behalf of
their houses, thanking the organisers, parent helpers and teachers.

Additional thanks go to all staff and parents who had assisted on the day, with a special mention
to the P & F for providing us with recess and lunch. Enormous thanks to Chelsea Laucke for being
our ‘official’ photographer. We now have a lot of good photos to remember the day.
Well done to the terrific participation of the students who supported and encouraged each other
throughout the day.

Prayer and Care
Corner…..
This week we pray for the following members of our staff and school families:
Lucy O’Driscoll Scott and Stephanie Heidrich
Brenda Verrall Daniel and Louise Jenke
Sarah Evans and Michael Tatham
Did you know……?
In our school library, we have several useful parenting books available for
borrowing. During this term, I will be sharing some of these books with our
school community with a brief description. Be sure to have a look at these
books when you next visit the school and see Mrs Brenda Verrall if you wish to
borrow.
‘Raising beaut kids – being a parent isn’t easy.’ This book is like an instant
parent manual that covers many topics including; sibling rivalry, boredom, pocket money,
meal time mayhem, manners, tricky kid behaviour, cranky kids in the car. Each chapter offers
typical tricky scenarios that parents face and practical ways to respond to kids when they
serve up those awkward and tricky behaviours. This is a book that I wish I had read when my
children were younger!
