Doelstelling:Students are expected to be models for their pupils in the lower forms of secondary schools as far as their command of the spoken language is concerned.

Legitimatie:As it is essential for future teachers of English to acquire a high level of command of the English language we already require the students to obtain a high level of spoken English in year 1. As role models for pupils they should be able to express themselves fluently with an acceptable pronunciation and structure at CAE level in year 1.

Leerinhoud:Students are expected to practise their oral proficiency at all times. The LS CAE lessons help to prepare students for the test. In addition, the pronunciation (practice) course is of great value. If students fail the test, they will be expected to present a plan of action, making clear how they are planning to improve the standard of their oral proficiency to be ready for the next test .

Werkvorm:Oral proficiency is trained in all first-year courses, in particular LS-CAE and Phonetics. During LS lessons students will have ample opportunity to practise their oral skills. Teachers will monitor their performance. A practice test is part of the LS programme. In Phonetics I pronunciation is practised throughout the year. An intake tape is part of this course.

Toetsing/weging:In the course of block 1 the student’s level of oral proficiency is assessed on the basis of a tape recording. In the Oral Proficiency test students have to meet the standards expected of a future teacher of English. Students register in pairs prior to the OP test and comply with all the conditions as specified on the sign-up list.Note: OP I is part of the six-point LS 1 CAE course and a BSA requirement.Mondelinge toets (100%)

Doelstelling: Students will have gained the confidence necessary to be able to take an active part in the organisation and execution of a school trip.

Legitimatie: Students find out how to organize a school trip. For them to do so they need to look into the organisation at their teacher training schools. They use information they obtain in Culture of Great Britain to compile an interesting, cultural visit for year 3 pupils. Emphasis is on English cooperating with other subjects (‘leergebieden’). They find out information on that in the ‘vakgebied in het VMBO’ assignment.

Leerinhoud: During block 2 students form groups to start preparing a 5-day school trip to a region in Southern England. The group choose a ‘leergebied’ that will be incorporated into their trip. All aspects of the trip will be covered, from a letter to parents explaining the educational value of the trip to an evaluation of the excursion. There will be lectures on specific cultural topics. For ‘Aspects of Britain’ the group will choose certain typical English customs / sights and also work these into their trip. In the course of block 2 students are expected to hand in a ‘skeleton plan’ which will then be fleshed out in the rest of the year. Towards the end of block 4 all students are expected to take part in a 5-day excursion in which the project will be put into practice. The excursion will cost 320 euros including travel and accommodation (excluding spending money). Students are expected to be able to cooperate and organise themselves in such a way that the project flows smoothly towards completion.

Duaal: duale students will gain these competences (see above) in their teacher training school. They should look into how excursions are organised and executed in practice. They are, however, expected to join the trip to England.

Werkvorm: Groupwork & excursion, resulting in a presentation of their plans and experiences. Toetsvorm/weging: Points are given for Attendance, Participation, an acceptable ‘skeleton plan’, a detailed description of the excursion,

Doelstelling: The course is geared to further improving the students’ own grammatical competence. At the same time it focuses on problems encountered in the class-room, which is to prepare students for teaching grammar points themselves during teaching practice.

Students will be required to identify and solve particular grammar problems that they come across in their own work, and those that they will typically meet in class-room situations. They will also be expected to apply and explain relevant rules in clear terms. Thus the teaching of grammar forms an integral part of the course.

Doelstelling: Links with Phonetics, Responsive Reading, Story of English, Literature, VakdidactiekEnglish has truly established itself as an international language and this should be reflected in the way that it is taught and the background information that a teacher should have and be able to pass on to his/her pupils. The course books teachers will be using in class in the future will reflect the whole multi-cultural world rather than just the traditional bias towards British and North American culture. The aim of this course is to familiarise students with various aspects – linguistic, literary, cultural, historical, and political - of parts of the world in which English is established as a second and in some cases, first language (with the exception of England and the USA). To achieve this, students need to expand their reading, listening, writing, speaking, and presentation skills. Students will also give each other oral and written evaluations, resulting in valuable training in giving and receiving criticism (intervisie).Additionally, students will gain insight into the development of English and its literature throughout the world, and be better able to deal with material presented in secondary school course books. Students will have the experience of creating a graded reader and other teaching materials at secondary level.

Legitimatie:In order become well-informed teachers of English as a second or foreign language, students must gain exposure to many different kinds of “World Englishes”, which they and their pupils will encounter more and more often in course books, in the media, on Internet, in young adult literature, and in real life. Students will gain more experience in reading and analyzing literature, and they transfer these skills to ‘’pupil level’ while creating a simplified reader and other teaching materials at secondary level.

Leerinhoud: In block 3, there will be several lectures and activity sessions about various aspects of World Englishes, including excerpts from several films, reviews, poems, and articles. Students will also read and discuss Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart – often called ‘the most important African novel ever written’- and analyse simplified readers and related activities. In Block 4, students will

read and analyse one novel and number of short stories from different parts of the English Speaking World. The in-depth investigation will be conducted in project groups of 2-3 students and will result in a presentation of the country, the author and the novel chosen; a person book report; and the production of material that can be used by course participants as lesson material at lower secondary level (including an original simplified reader based on the chosen novel).

Werkvorm:Lectures, powerpoints, class discussions, group activities, pair work, individual written work, student presentations, written peer evaluations.

Toetsing/weging:This module has a minimum 80% attendance requirement, with a test after Block 3, a presentation during Block 4, and a dossier due at the end of Block 4. The dossier will contain the student’s own presentation materials and simplified reader, as well as evaluations of the other presentations as proof of involvement and attendance.

(Dublindescriptoren: Kennisbasis 5.1 “Eigen bekwaamheid in het Engels”. We consider CEFR level C1 sufficient for the propadeutical phase, but insufficient for the certification level of a teacher of English.

Legitimatie:A fundamental assumption of foreign language teaching is that the teacher must have a superior command of the target language. This is particularly true of English, since most pupils already have some familiarity with English and the target levels at secondary schools are higher for English than those for other foreign languages: teachers of English must acquire an exceptionally high level of English in order to perform well as teachers and serve as successful language role models. To achieve this goal, the LS-CPE modules in Year 2 and Year 3 offer both general language skills and exam training for the Cambridge Proficiency Exam (CEFR level C2). CPE is also required in the Netherlands for TTO teachers, and English teachers should be role models for their colleagues at these schools.

Doelstelling/competenties:Links with Aspects of USA, Aspects of Britain, Responsive Reading, English-Speaking World, Story of English, LS-CPEThe Literature Year 3 course covers the literary works more or less chronologically up through the early 20th century. Students read a selection of the classics of English literature throughout the centuries, gaining background knowledge of styles and literary criticism, and also practice in working effectively with literature in the classroom. Students learn first-hand about reading and vocabulary strategies. Students increase their reading speed and their knowledge of vocabulary, and become familiar with essay-writing and referencing conventions. Students contribute to a class Weblog and experience educational blogging firsthand. The background knowledge of literary history and style will to aid students in their own teaching. Giving and evaluating presentations will give students experience in teaching literature. Designing, presenting, and participating in reading activities will enhance students’ familiarity with reading strategies and English-language literature in general. This knowledge will enable students to function optimally in the types of schools where they are qualified to teach. This course also helps to prepare and motivate students for an “eerstegraads” diploma program.

4.9, 4.10, 4.11, 6.3, 6.6, 6.8, 6.9

Doelstelling:The students develop a vision on foreign language teaching and show this in discussion and lesson material they create themselves. They are able to put to practice everything they’ve learned in Helpdesk year 1-3. Students know how to translate research and experience into advice at their own level.

Legitimatie:Students focus on the research and theory that relate to the methods and activities they use. Students research in which ways one can assess a method for secondary school teaching. They compare their daily activities with the recommendations of researchers and theories. Students are also required to produce helpful material for starting teachers.

Leerinhoud:The course aims at creating a vision on foreign language teaching and being able to translate this vision into the lessons at the students’ practice schools or the schools where they already teach. During the debate and the production of their own lesson sequences the students share and discuss their visions. For the creation of these ‘visions’ the students need to use everything they’ve learned in Helpdesk 1-3 and do research into various facets of teaching methodology.

Block 1: grammar law suit. The students read in Harmer’s How to Teach Grammar about various approaches towards grammar teaching. In groups they defend 1 approach in a ‘grammar law suit’. Preparation involves recording part of a grammar lesson at their practice schools and use this as ‘evidence’ in the law suit to support their case and thorough foundation of their grammar approach.

Block 2 is about finding your personal teaching style by first closely looking at and evaluating the course books the students use and then diversifying from standard procedures and experimenting with new techniques. The students create a lesson sequence with their newly found personal teaching styles in mind.

Block 3: This block deals with finding, reading, interpreting and discussing relevant professional literature. An attempt should be made by the students to implement the most relevant concepts of the articles dealt with in class in their lesson plans. The articles may also help the students in finding a topic and thesis statement for their Bestwerk+ that should be finished in block 4.

Block 4: The students work on Bestwerk+.
