”En teknik för objektiv, systematisk och kvantitativ beskrivning av det manifesta innehållet i ett meddelande/kommunikation” (Berelson 1952, 1969)

Induktion
Deduktion
Abduktion
- Deskriptiv innehållsanalys
(manifest innehållsanalys)
- Tolkande innehållsanalys
(latent innehållsanalys)
Ett annat sätt att indela innehållsanalys:
- Kategorisk innehållsanalys; innehåll och/eller
struktur? (fokus på meningsenheterna)
- Holistisk innehållsanalys; innehåll och/eller
struktur? (fokus på större analysenheter)
När använda innehållsanalys
Case study (flera datakällor i samma studie)
Mixed method
Longitudinella studier med intervjuer,
observationer
Dokumentanalyser
Olika frågor i samma intervjuer
Validering
Innehållsanalys Kan användas på många olika typer av data
Kan arbeta med olika abstraktionsnivåer (även i
en och samma studie)
Användbart även på stora och omfångsrika
datamaterial
Kreativ process – forskaren kan påverka
metodens utformning
Pilotstudier av analysproceduren
Content analysis är inte enklare än
andra kvalitativa metoder. Ett antal
överväganden måste göras innan
starten;
Enligt uppslagsbok betyder:
Dimension = aspekt, utsträckning (i längd, bredd, höjd), omfång, vidd, omfattning
Tema = ämne, grundtanke, huvudsakligt innehåll
Kategori = grundbegrepp, grupp, klass, fack
Förutsätter noggrant beskriven analys
Data analysis(ett exempel) Qualitative inductive content analysis [20, 21] was chosen to gain an
understanding of empowerment from the family members’
perspective. The analysis of all the transcribed interviews was
performed in several steps. The first step was an “open” reading
of each interview to obtain an overall impression of its content. In
the second step, meaning units with reference to the participant’s
experiences of health care were identified from the transcribed data.
A meaning unit consisted of one or more sentences or paragraphs
of a narrative. In the third step, the meaning units were condensed
(keeping close to the text), and in the fourth step, the
interpretation of the underlying meaning was expressed in terms of
codes [25].
(forts)
The co-authors read the first author’s initial analysis. The
condensations and codes were then subjected to critical
discussion within the research group, resulting in certain
modifications of the codes. Thereafter, in the fifth step, the
codes were analysed and labelled by the first author (AN) into
sub-themes. After reading the analysis as a whole, all the
authors discussed and compared the findings until agreement
was reached. The interviews in their entirety served as a point
of reference throughout the analytical process when deeper
understanding was needed of the meaning units, codes and
sub-themes. In the sixth and last step, one theme was
developed from the sub-themes, expressing the main thread
or main latent content of the text [21].
From the themes and categories a core narrative has been derived in order to describe the (composite) family’s experiences and what they regarded as of significance in the situation. As the name implies, this narrative is intended to present the core of the content, i.e. the part of the content which emerged most strongly from the data (Viney L, Bousfield L. Narrative analysis: A method of psychosocial research for AIDS-
affected people. Soc Sci Med 1991;32:757-65).
Core narrative The core narrative is a fictitious narrative designed to describe the experiences of the family (patient and next of kin) with regard to the affliction of a highly malignant brain tumour. Lars is 61 and works as a typographer. He is married to Lena, who is 56 and works in the food industry. They have two children: Tomas, 33, and Lisbeth, 28. Tomas and Lisbeth live in the same community as their parents and have families of their own. For some time now, Lars has felt tired and complained of headache. One morning Lena hears a thud from the toilet and rushes in to find her husband unconscious on the floor. Blood and froth are running out of his mouth. Lena calls the ambulance, that arrives shortly. On arrival at the hospital Lars has regained consciousness, and he and Lena see a doctor who refers him to the X-ray department, where computer tomography is carried out. The doctor in charge tells Lars and Lena that a brain tumour is suspected but more examinations are required, so Lars has to remain at the hospital. Lena tells the children about the suspected tumour. Learning of the diagnosis has been dreadfully unreal to her. The hospital staff are very kind and helpful, and they are close at hand ready to give the family support. Lena goes on the sick-list some days and the family take it in turns being with Lars. They don’t talk about the illness …............
