OF AGENTS IN ARIZONA REGIONAL MLS

Dear Doreen, We must move closer to our jobs. Between work

and family, we’re crazy busy so we want to develop a plan to sell our house that won’t make us even more crazy. I know we must have you come by and give us market information. Will you also give us tips on what needs to be upgraded/repaired, and who can help us get it done? We know there are many things that need to be done prior to listing. (Yes, I do sneak in some HGTV—a guilty pleasure!)

My First Sale Dear MFS,

After discussing the market in broad terms and your home in particular, we’ll be happy to give you a number of ideas. Plus, we can share names of excellent painters, landscapers and “fix-it” contractors. Then, you can get bids on the jobs, decide how much work you’re willing to do and how much you want to spend.

Next, prioritize the work and schedule the jobs. With your busy schedule, a contractor’s lock box will help reduce stress.

Put yourself in the buyer’s shoes: Google your address, your builder, your community, check your property tax records and your title report. (Ask us for help with getting these docs.) Prepare answers to any concerns these searches might produce.

Group Hike and Bake-offThis time of year, a

Saturday morning hike does magical things to mind and body. Fireside at Norterra plans to host such an event 8 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 11, in support of breast cancer awareness. Kids and adults can gather at the event lawn for a 5K hike along the Sonoran Trail culminating with breakfast at Bagels and

Brew and an opportunity to bid on goodies at the annual bake-off.

Last year’s bake-off had the support of over 60 local bakers, raising $1,300 in donations. Proceeds benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.

If you are interested in contributing home-baked cookies, cupcakes,

We would like to thank the entire community for all the amazing support you have given during this difficult time. It is

overwhelming and hard to put into words our expression of gratitude for everything that everyone has done, from food deliveries, fundraisers, flowers, gifts and so much more. We greatly appreciate all the thoughts, prayers and words of encouragement. During these tragic times, we feel so blessed to live in such a beautiful community that steps in to help one another in their time of need.

Thank you for all the beauty. The Crouse and Johnstone families

Anthem

Facing the ultimate challenge, families are grateful for the support.

Gavilan Peak School filled the sky with love for Trevor Crouse and Gary Johnstone Friday, Sept. 5 as students and staff released 575 red balloons. Daisy Mountain Fire Department signaled the release with a siren. “It was far more emotional than anyone thought it would be… Watching the balloons grow smaller and smaller was quite poetic,” said Gavilan Peak science teacher Gina McGurin, organizer of the event. Crouse and Johnstone lost their lives in a rappelling accident Aug. 8. Trevor’s grandparents (left) attended the event with Sarah Crouse (center), and Patrick Crouse (right). Johnstone’s wife, Lisa, and sons also attended. [See slideshow of the event at anthemnews.com.]

A Unique EmployerBy Amanda [email protected]

United States Automobile Association’s growth added over 1,000 jobs to its north

Phoenix campus since March 2013, and anticipates completion of the 364,000-square-foot expansion in April 2015.

Twenty-five Army officers decided to insure each other’s automobiles in 1922 in San Antonio, TX, forming a member-owned organization that today is worth more than $25 billion. USAA now provides more than 10 million military service members and their families with insurance, banking, financial planning and investment services.

What makes USAA unique among its financial services peers is its focus on military veterans and their families in its hiring process. “USAA’s internal goal is that 30 percent of all new hires come from the ranks of veterans and military spouses. We have hired more than 8,700 veterans and military spouses since 2006,” spokesperson Rebecca Hirsch said.

USAA teams with the White House’s Joining Forces and U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Hiring Our Heroes to raise awareness of the assets veterans and military spouses can bring to the workplace. According to Hirsch, more than 1.5 million veterans are expected to leave the service in the next five years.

“USAA facilitates skills development for veterans through programs like VetFIT and Combat-to-Claims. These programs are intended to train veterans in a skill-set, like Java programming or claims adjusting, to help create a lifelong, meaningful civilian career,” Hirsch said.

Whether an employee is a veteran, a military spouse or a civilian, the company offers its employees some big perks. The Phoenix campus features an onsite child care center, a health and wellness clinic, and a fitness center. And, dress code is casual, according to general manager Rob Schaffer.

USAA is hiring at its 1 Norterra Parkway location. To learn more, visit usaajobs.com. io

Among the perks, USAA provides its employees with a game room, an on-site clinic, a Starbucks and multiple areas to relax and recharge.

The Termite WarrantyIt won’t keep freshmen away, but it’s still worth it.

By Chris [email protected]

Last week, I warned if you haven’t already had them, you will. That’s why, even though I’m an “anti-warranty”

kind of guy, I make an iron-clad exception when it comes to termites. There’s a saying in the Arizona real estate industry―“There are two types of homes; thems with termites, and thems that’s gonna get ’em”! Like the freshman returning home with a bag of laundry and an exotic, cold-blooded pet, termites are a matter of when, not if.

A one-year warranty will run you around $125, but a complete treatment can cost $700 or more and, in many cases, will require holes to be drilled every 12 inches or so into your driveway, patio or other hardscape that comes in contact with the perimeter of your house. That’s without the cost of possible repairs.

When choosing a pest control company for warranty or treatment, ask them what type of chemicals they use. Some are

simply repellents. Others undermine the little buggers by disorienting them, so they forget about grooming and are eaten alive by fungus (see earlier college student reference). Another type of poison is carried back to the colony by unsuspecting foragers and kills many of their itty-bitty buddies.

I’m not aware of any “green” termite control other than tiny tweezers and a steady hand. The good news is when used properly, termite-killing chemicals are toxic only to termites. And to be clear, your monthly pest control is not a termite treatment. That said, a good pest control company will check for signs of termite activity during monthly visits.

Here’s a bit of good news for you transplants who are wondering why you ever moved to this critter-laden crockpot in the first place. Unlike other types of termites, ours don’t generally live in your house; they just eat there. This means they are easier to get rid of and do less damage than, say, that 19- to 24-year-old parasite that also tends to hang around your house. io
