Belgium - Mercedes-Benz ishoping to reveal its customer engineplans for 2010 at the Italian GrandPrix, amid mounting speculationthat a deal to supply Red Bull Rac-ing has now been agreed.

AUTOSPORT revealed in Aprilthat Red Bull Racing was chasing asupply of Mercedes-Benz enginesfor next year, once its current con-tract with Renault comes to an endlater this season.

It is understood that Red BullRacing’s recent engine problemshave accelerated the moves towardsMercedes-Benz, with an announce-ment on the outcome of those nego-tiations expected imminently.

A Mercedes-Benz deal with RedBull Racing would mean McLaren’sengine partner supplying four teamsin total next year - as Brawn GP andForce India will also receive cus-tomer units.

Mercedes-Benz motorsport bossNorbert Haug told AUTOSPORTthat he could not reveal the detailsof any discussions that his car manu-facturer was having, but said newswould come at the Italian GP in a

Mercedes to sort engine plans by Monzafortnight’s time.

“I definitely will not mention anyteam names,” he explained. “Theseare confidential negotiations, and Ihope by Monza we know everything- so that is a fortnight away. Every-thing should be finalised by then.

“We have talked to various teams, more than one team, and I would likesome understanding that these areconfidential discussions so I cannottalk about it any more.”

F1’s regulations stipulate that anymanufacturer supplying more thantwo teams in F1 needs special dispen-sation from the FIA. Haug confirmedthat his company had received suchapproval to supply four teams.

“We have that in writing, and Ithink the FIA is very interested in amanufacturer who helps in this situ-ation,” he explained. “There are notso many who would jump in and vol-unteer and would want more than onecustomer team, but you have to havethe logistics, you have to have the ca-pacity and you need to build it up.

“We could not have done it twoyears ago, but all in all we build halfthe engines for four teams including

rebuilding that we did for our ownteam two years ago. This is a big, bigefficiency programme. It also helpsrefinancing, but you need to be ab-solutely very lean. I am not surewhether everyone could do that.”

Red Bull Racing team principalChristian Horner said earlier in theBelgian GP weekend that his teamwas close to making a final decisionabout its plans - and that recent en-gine problems would not be the onlyfactor in what his team did.

“We’re obviously in a positionwhere, as an independent team, wehave a choice of engine,” he said.“We’ve been very, very happy withthe supply that we’ve had fromRenault for the last three years.

“Any decision that will be made, will be made not on the outcome of asingle weekend but based on what webelieve offers us the best opportunityof performance and relationship forthe future.

“We haven’t made any firm deci-sions yet, but we’re obviously near-ing a time when we need to make acommitment for next year.”gium,Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009.

La Source on lap one.“It would be stupid to say that I

don’t believe [we can win],” he saidafter qualifying on Saturday. “Weare here to win races, so it is not abig surprise. Yeah, probably wehave a better chance with this kindof grid than one with Red Bulls andBrawns and other teams at the front.“So I think there will be quite a lotof changes at the front tomorrow.”

Raikkonen added that sixth on the

grid was all that was possible fromthe F60 at Spa, but that he expectedthe car to perform better on a heavyfuel load.

“I don’t think we could go muchfaster,” he said. “This is probablythe maximum that we can get, youcan easily see the lap times in lowfuel - we are always a bit behind -but it helps us when we put a bitmore fuel in the car.

“For tomorrow’s race it is defi-nitely looking different to normal,so I think it looks like a more openrace situation than usual. So we willsee what we can do.”

On that account, when investorswould like to establish tourism facil-ity at their region, they welcome itconvivially and joyously. If farmersreject the intention, they will be per-suaded and given the same hope: ev-erything could be resolved by tourism.

Only a few people think that Balishould be developed harmoniously. Inother words, tourism may reach its ad-vancement, but other sectors like theagriculture should not be neglected, moreover forgotten. Similarly, the pro-tected forest functioning as water res-ervoir, landslide protector and climaticharmonizer should also be given thesame protection as the agriculture andlake. Because, those implementing theequilibrium system consider the tour-ism sector is unable to grow well if notsupported by agricultural sector, pre-served forest, secure environment andguaranteed security. On that account, the endeavor of a number of regencyin Bali that has provided tax subsidy toagricultural sector locating on the greenbelt zone should be given appreciation.

However, a question thenarises:”Do you think the agricultureexisting beyond the green belt zone isunimportant?” It is uncertain becausethe fertile land could assure for theavailability of adequate food. There-fore, it is expected that the shift ofland’s function could not be undertakento such fertile land like that intendedfor hotel, villa or other tourism-relatedbuildings. Because, the developmentof villa or hotel at the agricultural areawill accelerate the transfer of land’sfunction like that happened at WangayaBetan Hamlet, Mangesta, Penebel,Tabanan. However, today it only takes18 hectares of land, but there is a pos-sibility the area will be followed byother supporting facilities such as artsshop, restaurant and other promisingfacilities. Economically, the existenceof the project may be advantageous, aside from absorbing the labor force,it also enables to create new livelihoodfor the surrounding community andadditional hotel & restaurant tax. How-ever, this matter will have a bad im-

pact on the environment where the villais established posing an agriculturalzone that will accelerate the transfer ofland’s function and threat the wateravailability. Stagnancy of villa devel-opment at Wangaya Betan is also wor-ried to result in the same fate as otherinvestment that only divided the landand neglected it. Regency Governmentof Tabanan has not given explanationto what extent the investor would begiven time by the Regent. The TabananRegent, Adi Wiryatama, lately admit-ted to recall the investor in order hecould re-affirm about the continuity ofsuch development.

One of the resource persons said thatthere has been a communication be-tween the regent and investor. How-ever, it has not been known yet the at-titude of regency government on thestagnancy of such villa development.Such 18-hectare land released by in-vestor to build a resort and center forhealthcare at Wangaya Betan,Mengesta Village, Penebel remainedunclear up to these days. It did not in-dicate any signs of development projectthough initial work ceremony has beenundertaken. The investor denoting aconsortium of 13 countries seems tofind no obstacles as it has had principlepermit from the Tabanan Regent. (upi) (upi) (upi) (upi) (upi)

The Hindus conducted purification ritual or “melukat” in Tirta Empul, Gianyar, on Sunday,August 30th 2009.

And a game of high drama endedon a note of even greater controversywith Arsenal manager ArseneWenger dismissed for his protesta-tions that Robin van Persie’s 95th-minute effort had been ruled out be-cause of an offside decision againstWilliams Gallas.

Wenger had earlier seen his goal-keeper Manuel Almunia controver-sially adjudged to have brought downRooney in the 57th minute, a deci-sion that did not please the visitors, especially when the England forwarddusted himself down and scored theresulting kick.

The visitors had had their owndecent first half appeal turned downand their mood worsened in the 63rdminute when United took the leadthrough Diaby’s own goal.

Ryan Giggs’ right-wing free-kickwas aimed at Rooney but Diaby bi-zarrely leapt to head past Almuniafrom six yards out.

Wenger’s team had been full valuefor the lead until that point afterAndrey Arshavin struck in the 40thminute with a quite exceptional fin-ish, moments after he had been de-nied what looked a clear penalty byreferee Mike Dean following a chal-lenge from Darren Fletcher.

For there was no other ex-planation why Fletcher’s crude slid-ing foul on Arshavin should havegone unpunished, not that the Russianforward spent too long mulling overthe injustice of the decision.

Within seconds, Denilson playeda neat, short pass that Arshavin col-lected midway in the United half and, with the defence inexplicably back-ing away, the Arsenal man was al-lowed to advance to the edge of thehome area before unleashing a fan-tastically judged shot into the left-hand side of the goal.

It was an effort that was just re-ward for a period of superior Arsenalpossession and play following a cau-tious opening from both teams.

Fletcher should have done betterafter 10 minutes when an intelligentpass from Rooney put him clear un-marked on the penalty spot only forthe midfield man to hurry his attemptover the bar. ROME - Champions InterMilan claimed derby honours byhammering city rivals AC Milan4-0 after Gennaro Gattuso wassent off in the first half.

Milan, and Gattuso in particu-lar, self-destructed in spectacu-lar fashion during a 10-minutefirst half period in a match thatsuggests the loss of Kaka to RealMadrid has hit the red and blackhalf of the city harder than theythought.

Thiago Motta scored his firstgoal for Inter and fellow new-re-cruit from Genoa Diego Militoadded a penalty before Brazilianfull-back Maicon’s strike had allbut ended the contest by half time.

Serbian Dejan Stankovic’s sec-ond half rocket put the gloss onan accomplished performance ascoach Leonardo suffered a mis-erable first derby in charge ofMilan.

Inter coach Jose Mourinhogave a debut to Dutch attackingmidfielder Wesley Sneijder fol-lowing his move from Real.

He showed his worth on sixminutes, testing Milan goalkeeper

Champions Inter hand four-goalmauling to 10-man Milan

Marco Storari with a curling effortfrom outside the box.

On 13 minutes Ronaldinho shouldhave done better when teed up byPato but after skying his shot milesoff target and falling over in the pro-cess, the Brazilian tried claiming apenalty despite there being no con-tact from Stankovic when he trippedover his own feet.

Milan looked lively at that time butthe first goal on 29 minutes changedeverything.

It came from a sweeping teammove on the edge of the Milan boxas Motta fed Samuel Eto’o, whoshifted the ball on to Milito before theArgentine played the ball behind thebackline where Motta, who had con-tinued his forward run, unchecked byeither Mathieu Flamini or MarekJankulovski, curled a shot beyondStorari. Six minutes later and Milanfell to pieces.

From a Milan free-kick Inter brokeat pace with Maicon lumping a longball down the line for Eto’o to chase. The Cameroon forward skinnedGattuso who slung his arm around theInter man’s neck and hauled him downinside the box for a clear professionalfoul.

Inexplicably the referee only

showed Gattuso a yellow card butMilito exacted adequate punish-ment by smashing his penaltyhome, straight down the middle.

Captain Gattuso had already sig-nalled to the bench that he wantedto come off before the goal but hisattempts to leave the field werehampered as substitute ClarenceSeedorf wasn’t ready.

Play continued and on 40 min-utes Gattuso hacked downSneijder, earning a second yellowbefore Seedorf had a chance to en-ter the fray.

Gattuso was irate and blasted hisbench as he trudged off, leaving histeam a man down.

To add insult to injury, Maiconscored a third on the stroke of half-time after a one-two with Milito asFlamini once again failed to tracka forward run.

Stankovic’s howitzer from 25yards halfway through the secondperiod was the final nail in Milan’scoffin but tellingly, the nominalhosts at the San Siro — a groundthe two teams share — had a handin their own downfall as AndreaPirlo failed to close down theSerbian, giving him time and spaceto pick his spot.

The Gunners boss caught Probert’s

attention when he kicked an empty wa-ter bottle down the touchline followinga disallowed goal for Arsenal in the fi-nal minutes.

On the decision to penalise Wenger,Bevan said: “Although correct in ‘law’,it was completely out of context in thegame and it was followed by the non-sense which followed over whereArsene Wenger should sit.

“I’ve spoken to Keith Hackett andhe fully recognises the situation was anerror and an apology will follow toArsene Wenger.

“Lee Probert totally failed to man-age the situation and created a need-less pressure point taking the focusaway from the pitch in a big event withonly a minute to go.

TOKYO - Japan’s politicianshave been trying to drum up elec-tion fever this summer, but follow-ers of a growing craze are more ex-cited about strongmen who havebeen dead for centuries — samuraiwarriors.

A mania over feudal warlordshas been sweeping Japan, captur-ing the imagination of many in away that grey-suited lawmakers canonly dream of as they brave thesweltering dog days ahead of anelection on Sunday.

Japan’s medieval knights havebecome all the rage, battling it outin video games, on cinema screensand in manga comics as sexysword-wielding hunks.

Sales of their biographies havesurged, their family coats of armshave been snapped up as luckycharms, and their former castles arebeing besieged by legions of fansyearning for a brush with Japan’slong-gone martial noblemen.

Samurai figures now beckonfrom cellphone wallpapers, and thewives of famous warrior-lords havebecome the stars of high-rating his-torical TV dramas.

The general history magazine“Rekishi Kaido” (“History Road”)has run cover stories on samurailords almost every month for thepast year.

The history fad — worth 745million dollars a year, according toDai-ichi Life Research Instituteeconomist Toshihiro Nagahama —has been driven by hit video gamesand the A-List casts of popularsamurai television dramas.

But some social observers alsosay the trend reflects a deeperyearning for potent leaders in acountry fatigued by recession anduninspired by a bland political sys-tem dominated by two centristmainstream parties.

Other Singaporean companies areenjoying similar success throughoutthe Asian region, establishing them-selves in a diverse field of industries.

OSIM, a maker of electronic mas-sage chairs and other lifestyle prod-ucts like air purifiers, has over 1,100outlets spread across 28 countriesconcentrated mainly in the region.

“Singapore is a small countrywith a small domestic market, there-fore it is critical for us to grow anexternal economy with Hong Kong,Taiwan, Malaysia and now China,”OSIM founder and chief executiveRon Sim told AFP.

“Going forward, we believe thatKorea and Japan are markets we arelooking forward to, and India willbe key too,” he said.

Budget carrier Tiger Airways isalso becoming a mainstay in thetravel industry, having established awide network across the Asia-Pa-cific region with flights to 19 desti-nations from Singapore.

“Asia remains a priority,” saidRosalynn Tay, Tiger Airways’ man-aging director for Singapore.

“The region has a large popula-tion base and air transport remainsthe most practical mode of trans-port.”

It is not to be mistaken for TigerBeer, now one of the most popularbeverages in Southeast Asia.

First brewed locally in 1932when Singapore was still under Brit-ish colonial rule, it has won overdrinkers beyond the region thanksto aggressive marketing and expan-sion of brewing operations to keymarkets.

Bakery chain BreadTalk, whichgained instant success at home withits freshly baked buns, has movedon to build a loyal base of custom-ers in Indonesia, the Philippines,China and Hong Kong.

What started out as a trendamong video game nerds eruptedinto a mainstream craze this yearafter young women latched onto it.Japanese media quickly found a la-bel for them — “rekijo,” or femalehistory geeks.

In a society where market re-searchers recently identified a newmale demographic as passive ‘her-bivores’, “women seek ‘super car-nivorous males’,” said IchiyaNakamura, a media and pop cultureresearcher at Keio University.

“The warlords were differentfrom the cold-eyed, dispassionateJapanese men of today,” he said.“They stood out because of theirstrong personalities.”

In a store dedicated to samuraibooks and paraphernalia, a 17-year-old female fan agreed wholeheart-edly, gushing that the “warlords sac-rificed themselves for justice and toprotect the people.” Now, shescoffed, “politics purely serves theinterests of politicians.”

Currently hip warlords includeOda Nobunaga, the first leader tobring Japan under unified rule, andDate Masamune, dubbed the “One-Eyed Dragon” after his solitary eyeand known for his iconic helmetwith a blade-like crescent.

“We are in an era that lacks politi-cians with strong resolve,” saidFumikazu Oyama, 39, browsingthrough a bookstore specialising in theSengoku or Warring States Period, which lasted from the 15th to the 17thcenturies. “They only procrastinateand delay solving problems.”

VIENNA – Quentin Tarantino’snew film “Inglourious Basterds”about a Jewish militia that killedand scalped Nazis in World War IIis not as far-fetched as it mightsound.

In fact, there was a real-lifesquadron of Jewish soldiers whohunted down SS officers in Austriaimmediately after the war in anoperation called “Nakam” (ven-geance in Hebrew), according toone of the troop’s last survivors, 88-year-old Chaim Miller.

“We operated in the south ofAustria in the days just after the warended,” the Vienna-born Israeli toldAFP via telephone from a Kibbutznear Jerusalem.

“We were soldiers in the JewishBrigade group of the British armystationed in Tarvisio, Italy, close tothe Austrian border. Yugoslav par-tisans had given us lists of namesof Nazi criminals and so we wentin groups of three to secretly searchthem out,” Miller recalled.

ers. MTV hasn’t said whetherGoldstein’s show will air.

In an interview with the AP lastmonth, he said the show provided a“terrifying” reminder of his own ad-diction. “I have to constantly remindmyself why I’m here and rememberwhat it was like,” he said.

Goldstein rose to fame several yearsago as a deejay known for his mashups— blends of at least two songs. He per-formed in clubs, on concert stages andat exclusive Hollywood parties. Hispersonal life also garnered attention, ashe dated actress-singer Mandy Mooreand reality TV star Nicole Richie, thedaughter of singer Lionel Richie.

Goldstein was critically hurt in aplane crash last September in Colum-

bia, S.C., that killed four people. Hewas flying in a Learjet after a perfor-mance with Travis Barker, a drum-mer for the pop-punk band Blink-182and Goldstein’s partner in the duoTRVSDJ-AM. Barker and Goldsteinwere burned. Goldstein had to getskin graft surgery but resumed per-forming about a month later. He toldthe AP he felt blessed to have survivedbut was still shaken by the crash.

“I guess I get why they call it‘post-trauma,’ because it was verytough. I have really bad days, and Ihave really OK days,” he said.

His body was found after a friendcalled police to say he was unableto get into the home in New YorkCity’s trendy SoHo neighborhood.Paramedics had to break down thedoor before they found him, shirtlessand wearing sweatpants, in his bedaround 5:20 p.m. on Friday, the lawenforcement official said. “We took them to some woodson the Italian side, gave them a‘hearing’ for half an hour and thenexplained to them they’d pay. Theyremained in the woods forever,”Miller said.

“I participated in a number ofactions of this type and severalother groups worked in the sameway.”

Historians are divided about theexact number of executions carriedout in the operation, which wascoordinated by the future chief ofstaff of the Israeli army, ChaimLaskov, with estimates rangingfrom 100 to 300.

Born Alfred Mueller in 1921 inin a working-class neighbourhoodin Vienna, Chaim Miller emigratedto Palestine in February 1939 afterthe Nazi annexation of Austria. Hisparents stayed in Vienna and weremurdered in the Holocaust.

In Palestine, Mueller joined thesecret Jewish defence army Haganahand the “German Platoon” whichconsisted of 40 German-speakingJews with Aryan looks who wouldinfiltrate and operate behind Germanlines should the Germans everthreaten to take Palestine.

“In preparation, we underwentthe perfect German soldier’s deserttraining, with weapons, uniformsand even learned to sing theWehrmacht songs,” Miller recalled.

Erwin Rommel’s defeat in August1942 rendered the project obsolete. But most of the soldiers of the “Ger-man Platoon”, which was eventuallyintegrated into the Jewish Brigade ofthe 8th British army, took part in Op-eration Nakam in 1945.

“We were driven by a desire forrevenge. We knew that the over-whelming majority of SS criminalswould never be brought to justice,”Miller said.

Winfried Garscha, historian atVienna’s DOeW or DocumentationCentre of Austrian Resistance, con-firmed this: “At most, only around10-15 percent of those guilty ofNazi crimes were sentenced at theend of the war, in Austria, Germanyand in Italy,” he told AFP.

The European Commission’s economicsentiment indicator for the 16 nations usingthe euro single currency rose to 80.6 pointsfrom 76 points in July, continuing a gradualclimb away from a record low 64.6 pointsin March.

The figure defied the expectations ofanalysts, polled by Dow Jones Newswires, who had predicted a more modest rise to 78points. “Recovery of the industrial confi-dence indicator continued, backed by astrong increase in production expectationsand manufacturers’ assessment of orderbooks,” the EU’s executive body said in astatement.

However, it noted that “stocks of fin-ished goods, production expectations andorder books remain well below their long-term averages.” The long-term averagerate, since 1990, is 100. Among the largerEU economies, the greatest signs of im-provement in confidence were seen in Brit-ain, up 9.7 points, followed by the Nether-lands, 7.6 points, and European economicpowerhouse Germany which saw economicsentiment rise by 5.1 points in August.

There were also “noteworthy” gains inPoland, Italy and Spain.

The commission said the increase wasdue to a general improvement across theboard, with only retail trade a little sluggish. The services sector gained considerably, while industry continued to climb out of thetrough from March.

In the wider 27-nation European Union, the economic sentiment indicator rose to80.9 points from 75 points in July.

“Central bankers will be facing a some-what changed economic environment: theworst is over and the economy is stabilising,”he said, but warned: “the labour market anda possible credit crunch are clear speedbumps on the road to recovery.”

The commission’s separate business cli-mate indicator also continued to recover, improving for a fifth consecutive month witha rise to negative 2.21 points from minus 2.70points in July.

Improvement was particularly strong inproduction trends, while “both order booksand export order books continued to improvefrom the trough reached in June.

HANOI - Government loudspeak-ers are spreading communist propa-ganda over the streets of Hanoi aheadof the 40th anniversary Wednesdayof Ho Chi Minh’s death.

But few people seem to be listen-ing.

“The grand sacrifices (of Ho ChiMinh), brilliant moral revolutionary, remain the sun lighting the way forthe nation,” a government employeeannounces into his microphone.

Yet even the messenger doubts theeffect of his words about Ho, thecountry’s founding president.

“I see very few people listening,”he says, unwilling to be named.

They may admire Ho but many ofVietnam’s young people — whomake up more than half the popula-tion — say they have no time forgovernment campaigns in his name.

“Following someone, you do thaton your own, in your heart, not inresponse to a general movement,”said Tran Hong Linh, 19, a univer-sity student.

Construction worker NguyenThanh Lam, 20, said he heard a lotof talk on the radio about Ho, “butnothing came into my ears.”

Government campaigns forpeople to live and work according toHo’s example are a “fiasco” thatbring no benefit to the people, said ashop manager, who asked not to beidentified.

“I think he is an admirable figurealthough now there are so many op-posite opinions about his life and ca-reer,” said a woman, 28, who worksfor a foreign company and alsowould not be named.

She is among the 51 percent ofVietnam’s population who, officialdata say, are under the age of 30,meaning they were born after the waragainst the US ended in 1975 andhave grown up in the country’sbooming market economy.

Their opinions contrast markedlywith the official view that Ho Chi

“I am young, so I don’t knowmuch history. But he must havemade mistakes sometimes.”

Ho himself admitted in 1956that “errors” had been committedduring a land reform campaign inwhich, it was later revealed, tensof thousands were put to death.

For a long time the rulingCommunist Party played with thedates of Ho’s demise. Officialssaid he died on September 3,1969 because they did not wantto spoil Vietnam’s September 2National Day.Twenty years agothe Party officially stated that Hodied on September 2, exactly 24years after he proclaimed the in-dependence of Vietnam.

After Ho’s death at the age of79, communist North Vietnamendured six more years of fight-ing against the United States andits allies in the South, until thecountry was reunified in 1975.

Agence France-PresseLUKLA - Over two decades,

Funuru Sherpa has watched the lakeabove his native village ofDengboche in Nepal’s Himalayasgrow, as the glacier that feeds it melts.

The 29-year-old, who runs a busyInternet cafe for tourists visiting theEverest region, remembers his grand-father telling him that 50 years agothe lake did not exist.

“Before, it was all ice,” he toldAFP in the eastern Himalayan townof Lukla, in the shadow of MountEverest.

“This is proof that the glaciers inthe high Himalayas are melting. Andthat must be because the temperatureshave gone up.”

Scientists say the Imja Glacierabove Dengboche is retreating byabout 70 metres (230 feet) a year, andthe melting ice has formed a hugelake that could devastate villagesdownstream if it bursts.

Melting glaciers threaten ‘Nepal tsunami’The trend is not new. Nepal’s In-

ternational Centre for IntegratedMountain Development (ICIMOD),which has studied the Himalayas forthree decades, says many of thecountry’s glaciers have been retreat-ing for centuries.

But ICIMOD glaciologistSamjwal Ratna Bajracharya said thiswas now happening at an alarmingspeed, with temperatures in theHimalayas rising at a much faster ratethan the global average.

“Our studies of the past 30 yearsshow that the temperatures (in theHimalayas) are rising up to eighttimes faster than the global average.Melting is taking place higher andfaster,” Bajracharya told AFP.

“The melting of glaciers and for-mation of glacier lakes is a key indi-cator of the temperature rise. Andlately, we have seen massive icemelt.”

Nepal has more than 2,300 gla-

cial lakes and experts say at least 20are in danger of bursting.

At almost one square kilometre(0.38 square miles), the Imja lake isthe country’s second biggest, esti-mated to hold 36 million cubic metres(47 million cubic yards) of water, andis considered the biggest flood threat.

It is a subject close to the heart ofNepalese mountaineer Apa Sherpa, who has climbed Everest a record 19times.

In 1985 Apa Sherpa lost his houseand farm when the Dig Tsho glaciallake burst, causing a giant wave toflow down the mountain.

Seven people were killed by theflood, which swept away bridges andhouses and destroyed a new hydro-power station. “For me, climatechange is personal,” said the climber, who dedicated his latest Everest ex-pedition to raising awareness of theimpact of climate change on moun-tain communities.

The technique of allowing de-ferred payments is an age-old com-mercial strategy more common forsales of washing machines or cars, but the company has embraced theconcept to tempt aspirational Indi-ans with restricted budgets.

BANGALORE - US jeans maker Levi Strauss has begun selling itsdenim on credit in India, offering shoppers the chance to buy a 30-dollar pair of its famous trousers in three installments.

Chatterjee told AFP.The group, which claims to have

created the first blue jeans in 1873,has teamed up with India’s largestprivate bank, ICICI Bank, to launchthe initiative in the IT hotspot ofBangalore.

Buoyed by the response, Levi’ssaid it was in talks with other pri-vate banks such as HDFC to offercredit to a wider range of buyers andin other cities around the country.

Bangalore, with its large young

population of IT workers, was anobvious starting point.

“Ever since we introduced the‘buy now, pay later’ scheme with-out interest or hidden charges inJune, our sales have surged by 10-15 percent,” Levi’s franchise man-ager M. Aaron told AFP from hisspacious showroom in Bangalore.

The only condition for the creditis that the bill should be for at least1,500 rupees (30 dollars), whichmeans interest-free repayments of500 rupees a month.

The lowest price for a pair ofjeans in Aaron’s store is 1600 rupees.

Judging by the customers walk-ing out with shopping bags, Levi’sare a hit among Bangalore’s college

students, young techies and middle-aged professionals who were busilyswiping their credit cards.

The move is an attempt by LeviStrauss to tap into the burgeoningdemand for Western-brandedclothes among India’s growingmiddle class.

Changing lifestyles, rising in-comes and the influence of Westernculture have fuelled demand for de-signer clothing in India, an obvioussymbol of wealth in the status-con-scious country.

“With rapidly changing and glo-bally exposed lifestyles, tastes anddesires, consumers in India are seek-ing means to upgrade and updatetheir wardrobes,” Levi’s brand man-

ager Vishal Bhalla said.Harish Bijoor, a brand specialist

who runs an Indian consultancy, toldAFP that he expected the installmentplan to tempt buyers who might havebeen put off by the total price tag.

It could also boost sales at a timewhen consumer spending has weak-ened because of a broader slowdownin the Indian economy in the wakeof the global financial crisis.

“The Levi’s scheme is atrendsetter in the jeanswear or ap-parel industry, which has been grow-ing in double-digits over a decade,”he said.

“The scheme makes brandedproducts like Levi’s jeans affordableto a critical mass,” he added.

JAKARTA - Eight people died and 18 are feared trapped inside acargo vessel which sank on a river in Indonesia’s Borneo Island, an offi-cial said Saturday, though state media says the tolls could be much higher.

could be far higher because many ofthose who boarded the boat could havedone so without a ticket and would notappear on the manifest. Indonesia’s234 million people are spread across17,000 islands and so are heavily de-pendent on a network of ships andboats, which have a poor safety record.

Up to 335 people were killed whena ferry sank off Sulawesi Island inJanuary. In December 2006 a ferrywent down in a storm off the coast ofJava, killing more than 500 people.

foreign tourists had proven thatWakatobi with its submarine parkhad great tourism potential.

“They (the tourists) come to enjoythe beauty of Wakatobi coral reefs,” hesaid, adding that this would have a posi-tive impact on the region’s economy.

Wakatobi with its 1.3 millionhectares of marine tourism potentialshas some 750 kinds of coral reefs, while the Caribbean Sea only had 50kinds and the Red Sea 300, he said.

Mostly manned by small families(husband, wife, son or daughter), theyachts started out from Darwin, Aus-tralia, and came to Wakatobi viaSaumlaki, Masohi, Banda, Namlea(Maluku), Ternate (North Maluku),Bunaken (North Sulawesi), andBanggai (Central Sulawesi).

Freeport convoy again attacked by armed groupSenior Commissioner Agus Rianto,a spokesman of the Papua police ,said here on Saturday.

The latest shootout was part of aseries of terror actions occurring in thearea of US gold and copper miningcompany PT Freeport Indonesia inTimika, Mimika District, Papua Prov-ince, during July and August this year.

The shooting incidents whichhave killed two Freeport employees, including an Australian national, have forced a cease of the company’sworker mobility between Timikaand Tembagapura for two weeks.

More than one thousand employ-ees of PT Freeport Indonesia and itscontractors returned to work inTembagapura on Thursday (Aug.

27) after being absent for two weeksfollowing shooting incidents.

Following the shooting incidentsthat had claimed the lives of Austra-lian Drew Nicholas Grant and Freeportsecurity personnel Markus Rate Alo,as well as police second brigadierMarson Patipelohi on July 11, thePapua regional police in cooperationwith the 17th Regional Military Com-mand have deployed more than 1,000personnel to secure the Freeprot area.

The joint military and policeforce, grouped in the Timika AmoleTask force, was supposed to com-plete their task on August 18 butbecause shootings still continuedtheir duty had been extended untilsituation was conducive again.

Indonesia bomb suspect was Al-Qaeda member: policehotels, which killed nine people in-cluding the two bombers.

The blasts marked the bloody endof a four-year hiatus in such attacksin the world’s most populous Mus-lim country, and have been blamedon a terror network led by Malaysianextremist Noordin Mohammed Top.

Asked by reporters whetherMohammed Jibril had been a mem-ber of Al-Qaeda, Danuri said “yes.”

“Let the process proceed, therewill be more developments,” he said, without elaborating.

Police say they have killed threecell members and arrested five sinceJuly 17, including a Saudi nationalwho allegedly smuggled money fromabroad to pay for the operation.

The source of the funds is not

known, but police have said they areinvestigating whether the moneycame from Al-Qaeda brokers in theMiddle East or South Asia, amongother possible donors.

Mohammed Jibril studied Islamin Karachi, southern Pakistan, wherehe joined an Al-Qaeda-affiliatedgroup known as Al-Ghuraba, or TheForeigners, according to analystssuch as the Brussels-based Interna-tional Crisis Group (ICG).

Al-Ghuraba was set up in 1999 byHambali, the Indonesian allegedpoint-man for Al-Qaeda in SoutheastAsia who is in US custody atGuantanamo Bay, analysts said.

It trained Southeast Asian mem-bers of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI)regional terror network blamed for

the 2002 Bali bombings that killed202 people, and served as a conduitbetween JI and Al-Qaeda.

The August 2003 arrest ofHambali, seen as JI’s operationschief, led to the breakup of Al-Ghuraba but analysts said the Paki-stan connection could have been re-established and used to finance thelatest attack in Indonesia.

Hambali’s younger brother andAl-Ghuraba alumni Gun GunRusman Gunawan was sentenced tofour years’ jail in Indonesia in 2004for helping to finance the 2003Marriott attack. He served only twoyears and is now free.

A spokesman for MohammedJibril’s family, Irfan S. Awwas, re-jected accusations the publisher had

any role in the hotel attacks.“Do you think Al-Ghuraba is a ter-

rorist movement?” he asked report-ers as he appeared with the suspect’sfather, radical cleric Abu Jibril, at thenational police headquarters to de-mand Mohammed Jibril’s release.

“As a student there (in Pakistan),anyone can join any organisation suchas Al-Ghuraba — it’s not forbidden.”

Mohammed Jibril’s publishing com-pany, Ar-Rahmah, has sold Al-Qaedapropaganda videos in Indonesia and lastyear launched Jihadmagz magazine, which glorifies global terror attacks. Hisfather was arrested in Malaysia in 2001on suspicion of being a JI member. Hewas deported to Indonesia in 2003 butserved only about five months in jailfor using a forged

BANGALORE - US jeans maker Levi Strauss has begun selling itsdenim on credit in India, offering shoppers the chance to buy a 30-dollar pair of its famous trousers in three installments.

created the first blue jeans in 1873,has teamed up with India’s largestprivate bank, ICICI Bank, to launchthe initiative in the IT hotspot ofBangalore.

Buoyed by the response, Levi’ssaid it was in talks with other pri-vate banks such as HDFC to offercredit to a wider range of buyers andin other cities around the country.

Bangalore, with its large young

“Uncle Ho made many contri-butions to the country. No onecould deny that. But he’s just hu-man, like any one of us... He’snot a saint,” said a 21-year-oldlaw student who refused to givehis name.

NEW YORK – Authorities will need to conduct toxicology tests, expected to take weeks, to determine what killed celebrity disc jockeyDJ AM, a medical examiner’s office spokeswoman said Saturday.

There wasno evidence of foul play.
