‘Three Temple Kata’. Refers to the 3-temple Kata of British Wadokai. Ji'tte, Ji'han and Ji'in form a group of kata beginning with the same characteristic kamae, which obviously has roots in ancient Chinese boxing. The 'lost' Kata of Wadoryu, Ji'in, likely originates from the Tomari-te school. Sen-sei Funakoshi did not teach this kata extensively. However, from a Wado per-spective, it remains important due to the many simultaneous techniques and the often-repeated stances, enabling quick changes and exchanges of direc-tion whilst maintaining balance, power and steps of equal length. It has, how-ever, been removed from the Japan Karate Association and Japan Karate Fed-eration teaching & grading syllabus, which is why it has lost popularity in 'Shiai' (competition). However, due to the wealth of important Tai-sabaki ele-ments contained within, British Wadokai has retained it for its important fun-damental value for the traditional Wado Budo-ka.

• Ji’tte 慈手 'Temple hand/s'. A Tomari-te Kata named after a Buddhist Temple and developed by the Shorei-ryu Karate master Itosu-Yasutsune. This Kata is practised within numerous Karate schools of Okinawa. Also known, al-though mistakenly, as Jutte; ten hands.

• Ji’han. 慈音 'Temple sound'. A Kata named after the Buddhist temple Ji'han-ji and developed by the Ka-rate master Itosu-Yasutsune. Prac-tised within the Wado school of Ka-rate. See Kata. See also Jion.

• Jion. An Okinawan Shorei-ryu Kata meaning ‘Mercy’. Referred to as Ji'han in the Wado schools of Ka-rate. Changed to Jion by the Shoto-kan School of Karate, with recent conforming 'competition styles’ fol-lowing suit. See Ji’han.

• Ji’in 慈陰 'Temple ground'. Referred to as one of the 'Lost Kata of Wadoryu'. A Kata of the Shuri-te school of Karate developed by Itosu-Yasutsune.

Professor Tatsuo Suzuki (1928-2011) Professor Tatsuo Suzuki was born in Yo-kohama in 1928 and became interested in Karate at the age of 14 and within six years of beginning his study of Karate, Professor Suzuki was awarded his 3rd Dan at the age of 19. In 1951 at the age of 24 he was awarded the then highest grade in Wado-Ryu, 5th Dan for his outstanding courage and ability. At 45 he was awarded his 8th Dan and also in the same year was given the title of Han-shi (Master) by the International Budo Fed-eration and was presented with a special sil-ver cup by Higashi Kuni no Miya, the uncle of the late Emperor of Japan. From 1945 to 1956 he received direct in-struction from the founder of Wado Ryu, Hi-ronori Ohtsuka Sensei at the Wado Ryu Headquarters. Thereafter, as Ohtsuka Sen-sei's most senior student, he travelled with Ohtsuka Sensei both domestically and inter-nationally performing demonstrations and

teaching at the Headquarters and in such places as Hawaii. From 1956 to 1964 Master Suzuki founded the first Wado Federation in England and from his base in London he spread Wado Ryu throughout Europe. Overcoming many difficulties, he brought senior students from Japan, taught them how to be instructors and sent them to various European countries. Within just a few years Wado Ryu be-came the most popular style in Europe. In 1991 Master Suzuki took over from Ohtsuka Sensei in protecting the es-sence of Ohtsuka Sensei’s ‘original’ Wado Ryu and established the Wado In-ternational Karate-Do Federation (WIKF). In addition to his accomplishments in Karate, Professor Suzuki was awarded 2nd Dan in Tenshin Koryu Bo-Jitsu (stick fighting) and 1st Dan in Judo. He also studied Zen doc-

trine with the high priests, the late Genpo Ya-mamoto and Soyen Nakagawa. Suzuki Sensei is also a member of the International Budo Academy (IBA) as an Associate Professor and has been awarded the title Doctor of Philoso-phy for his life long work and commitment to teaching Wado Ryu Karate. Sensei Suzuki will always be respected and never forgotten.

(Tatsuo Suzuki Hanshi (24/04/28-12/07/11).

NNNNews From The Telegraphews From The Telegraphews From The Telegraphews From The Telegraph Karate expert warned MBE could be stripped if qualifications don't add up. Alan Thornton, who says he has achieved the highest honour in karate, says he has been told he has been 'red flagged' over his MBE after experts in the sport raised concerns about his qualifications. A karate expert, controversially awarded an MBE despite being little known within the sport, has exposed an honours system “filled with loop holes”, experts have said. Questions were raised over the decision to hand Alan Thornton the hon-our after it emerged he had been nominated by a friend and was un-known to many leading practitioners in the UK. Karate experts have called for an investigation into Mr Thornton’s profes-sional background as they say his claims to be a 10th Dan – the rarest and highest possible honour in karate – are physically impossible. Mr Thornton now fears he could have his MBE taken away after he was asked by organisers of the Queen’s Honours to prove his credentials and warned he had been “red flagged.” Mr Thornton, 53, of Brentford in west London, said: “I was awarded the MBE and someone got in touch with me from the Cabinet Office to say they had had a ‘red flag’ saying that nobody here had heard of me in the martial arts world. "They made me feel as if I had put myself forward. “I'm not a fly by night fraudster. It was so upsetting, I was in tears at one stage.” Mr Thornton, who described himself as a 10th Dan Red belt in a form of karate called Senai Seisshinryu Shihandokai, says he was also asked to provide documents about his qualifications includ-ing his BsC in naturopathic studies. He said he had problems remembering where he had qualified, which led to further doubt being cast on him. He added: "The gentleman on the phone noticed I was forgetting. I later sent him all the certificates and transcripts. "All my grades can be traced. It's so embarrassing for me because it's damaging my reputation. "They said they could take back the award. We, my family, feel as if we've been stigmatised. I'm not a rogue." Mr Thornton also denied claims he had put himself forward for the honour and said he found out recently that his friend of 20 years, Kantilal Chavida, had nominated him in 2003. John Lidstone, an expert who has twice advised Select Committees on reform of the honours system, said a process which allowed friends to nominate each other was flawed and needed to be reformed with more stringent checks. But Mr Thornton has denied allegations he faked his past and said he fully deserves his MBE, awarded nine days ago for services to martial arts. Mr Lidstone said: “The whole of the honours system doesn’t work. He said the recent questions over Mr Thornton’s MBE was another example of how the "bar for honours should be higher." He said: "There are too many honours, there are not enough trip wires, there are far too many loopholes." He said instead of people being able to put forward friends "nominations should go through a very fine sieve." He said the honours system should remain, but that the criteria should be much higher – with people awarded for acts of bravery and consistently going beyond the call of duty. He added that honours nominations should have to go through a Sheriff or Lord Lieutenant before being submitted. Mr Thornton has been criticised by karate experts who say they have never heard of him and would expect to have done if he had achieved such a high honour. A number have complained to the cabinet office about the award. He said a back injury from lifting bags had left him "out of the loop" of the UK karate scene, and he had refused to join the English Karate Federation because it was "too political." David Donovan, known as ‘Ticky’, was previously awarded an OBE for coaching the English and British teams for 20 years. He said achieving the highest honour of 10th Dan in karate would be virtually impossible by the age of 53. “He is far too young to be claiming to be a 10th Dan,” Mr Donovan told the Telegraph. “To get your first Dan takes three years, then your second two years, your third three years and so on. “I’m 67 and I’m a 9th Dan. Most Japanese masters do not get a 10th Dan until after they die.” Mr Donovan said news of the MBE had caused concern among karate circles and many people felt he should be investi-gated. “The cabinet office should investigate. If it is proven that he is not worthy then he should be stripped of it.” However Mr Thornton said that he understood why doubt had been cast on him, but he had started learning karate at 13 and the system he follows is slightly different, taking in different forms of the sport. SSSSUUUU----HAHAHAHA----RI RI RI RI ---- 守破離守破離守破離守破離

The old Japanese martial-arts word that explains the student's learning and progression. There are numerous interpretations to Suhari and each synonymous to the relevant art or activity being practised. For example, the interpretation of Suhari within Wado Karate is: Traditionally, we are taught that Su-Ha-Ri is reflected in the progression of 1st Dan, 2nd Dan and 3rd Dan development, as there should be no tests for 4th Dan and above; due to the principles previously explained of Su-Ha-Ri. 4th Dan and above are traditionally ‘awarded’ grades for loyalty, plus the contributed years in dedicated service, etc.

1. Su 守 - Indicates that a beginner must correctly copy all Wado karate techniques and concepts from his instructor.

2. Ha 破 - Means that after a number of years of training, when the Karate-ka has attained a sufficient level black belt, he is allowed to de-velop new techniques provided they are improvements to his 'own' Wado. This applies to all movements, however, a student’s own devel-opment must not violate, or effect, the fundamental development of other students; as they must discover and travel the path of Suhari for themselves. When a Wadoka has successfully understood all there is to understand within Wado, from his instructor, then he may consider himself a step towards ‘Ha’.

3. Ri 離

- Is the highest form. It means that after an even longer period of training than for HA, the Karateka must be able to perform all forms of karate automatically, not stopping to think about his moves.

SUSUSUSU----HAHAHAHA----RI RI RI RI ---- 守破離守破離守破離守破離 Article: Su Ha Ri ...and this will bring us back to ‘Do’, ‘Rei’ and ‘Mi’! “Su Ha Ri”. Master Ohtsuka tells us that the term has been around for a long time, and also exists in many other forms within Japanese culture, including the Japanese Tea Ceremony, etc. For example, in the military, we see Suhari being implemented with new forms of weapons, arms and tactics, etc. Each system (or social criteria) has its own version of Suhari, but all follow a similar pattern. With ‘traditional’ arts, however, which wish to maintain traditional values and techniques, such as Karate, etc., the ‘individual’ attains self-awareness to his skill through Suhari; which allows him to develop as an individual, rather than changing the whole traditional system to suit the single practitioner. Ohtsuka Sensei adds the postscript that these levels of attainment depend on the natural ability of the individual student/practitioner, as well as the circumstances and environment necessary for the student to flourish - something not easy to accomplish. However, it must be remembered that these should be personal developments NOT teaching developments. For example - we would not teach our own short-cuts/habits to our students as our students have not attained the same knowledge or their own their own their own their own personal mechanical development. For a student to flourish he must develop within his own style of mechanics with his own expression and personality through personal awareness - 'He must become himself'. (MI-CHI) When we teach someone to drive a car, for the first time, we teach the basics/fundamentals of driving that has been ‘tried & tested’ for a safe and educational development. Prior to pulling away from a junction we are taught to use ‘mirror, signal, manoeuvre’, as a precursor to joining the traffic. If we were to teach our own ‘shortcuts’ and (in some cases) bad/modified habits, which we ourselves have attained through many years of driving, then the student may very well miss out on the awareness of some very valuable lost information. When we teach students Wado Karate we teach from scratch in the same way as our teachers showed us when we started on the path and through our development. After time our students will reach a point where they too will develop their own technique and movement through their own ability and progression. Although, as individuals, we may reach ‘Ha’ and ‘Ri’, we must still remain within ‘Su’ for our teachings. British Wadokai has always taught the TRADITIONAL and ORIGINAL Wadoryu that was introduced into the UK from the ‘original’ JKF-Wadokai (Ohtsuka Meijin’s original organisation). Extra elements were introduced, by Suzuki Hanshi, such as the revamped Sanbon-gumite (Sanbon-gumite was dropped by the JKF-Wadokai Japan (as believing not being relevant within modern competition) although some JKF-Wadokai Dojo still teach versions of it - Even Ohtsuka Hironori Saiko-Shihan, of the Wadoryu Karate-do Renmei, still teaches variations of Sanbon-gumite), Ohyo-gumite (which was introduced to help in the development of Wadoryu sparring, again this was dropped in many ‘modern’ Wadoryu schools due to compe-tition relevance and restrictions) and Renraku-waza (a transition from Ido-Kihon and Kata to natural fluid/flowing ‘free-fighting’ movement). How-ever, everything for us has remained intact from this time - NOTHING HAS BEEN TAKEN AWAY or REPLACED. The Wado created in Japan by Ohtsuka Meijin and introduced into the UK in 1963, and then permanently in 1964, by Suzuki Hanshi have, we feel, remained the same by British Wadokai. There was a very valid reason why Ohtsuka Meijin originally chose Suzuki Hanshi as his original choiThere was a very valid reason why Ohtsuka Meijin originally chose Suzuki Hanshi as his original choiThere was a very valid reason why Ohtsuka Meijin originally chose Suzuki Hanshi as his original choiThere was a very valid reason why Ohtsuka Meijin originally chose Suzuki Hanshi as his original choice as ce as ce as ce as technical successortechnical successortechnical successortechnical successor. WaWaWaWa----Do or WaDo or WaDo or WaDo or Wa----Don’tDon’tDon’tDon’t British Wadokai instructors DO NOT teach their own ‘personalised version’ of Wadoryu karate (although they may teach techniques that they may have personally developed for education pur-poses) but, as far as the syllabus is concerned, they impart the original that has been handed down to them from their previous instructors. When a student trains in one British Wadokai Dojo at one end of the country it should resemble that of another school elsewhere at the other end of the country (again, the importance of the Standardisation Courses). We do not have ‘Fred-ryu’ versions of Wado in any British Wadokai dojo. If a student wants to cre-ate his own ‘style’ fromfromfromfrom Wadoryu, then that is his choice, he will then have to leave British Wadokai to do this. British Wadokai is Wado Ryu NOT Wado-based. When a student creates and modifies his technique he is only modifying HIS OWN technique to suit his own natural mechanical ability/development. He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ He should not assume that this technique is ‘better’ for everyone else and teacfor everyone else and teacfor everyone else and teacfor everyone else and teach this to his own students; h this to his own students; h this to his own students; h this to his own students; that is a decision for his own students to make that is a decision for his own students to make that is a decision for his own students to make that is a decision for his own students to make after they have attained many years of their own ’coafter they have attained many years of their own ’coafter they have attained many years of their own ’coafter they have attained many years of their own ’correct’ trainingrrect’ trainingrrect’ trainingrrect’ training. . . . “There is nothing wrong with adding to a repertoire of technique, but do not change or replace our true historic Wado Karate.” In 1982 British Wadokai introduced extra-curricular elements to enhance the student’s ability and per-formance, such as the Tanto-dori (knife-defences), later the I-dori (kneeling defences) and then the Muto-dori (sword defences). These are additions to British Wadokai not replacements. Our syllabus has re-mained and WILL remain the same as it's done since 1964. Article written by Gary E Swift Kyoshi (2001).
