LABO XXLabo XX ( ‘Labo twintig’) is het project waarmee Ant-werpen zijn twintigste-eeuwse gordel – het stede-lijke grondgebied buiten de Ring en Singel – wil leren kennen en vernieuwen. Na jarenlange succesvolle stadsvernieuwing in de binnenstad en de negen-tiende-eeuwse gordel lijkt de stadsvlucht gekeerd en is de kernstad weer een aantrekkelijke plek om te wonen. De sterke bevolkingsgroei van de afgelopen jaren was dan ook vooral daar merkbaar. Daardoor zijn de maximale dichtheid en capaciteit er stilaan bereikt.

Volgens de stad kan toekomstige bevolkingsgroei best worden opgevangen in de twintigste-eeuwse gordel, een gebied dat bovendien aan vernieuwing toe is. Met die keuze vermijdt de stad overmatige verdichting in de binnenstad en verdere consump-tie van de schaarse open ruimte binnen en buiten de stadsgrenzen. Omdat het haast letterlijk en figuurlijk om stedenbouwkundig onontgonnen gebied gaat, organiseerde de stad een wedstrijd om het potenti-eel van de twintigste-eeuwse gordel te onderzoeken.

Deze tentoonstelling toont de resultaten van dat ontwerpend onderzoek. De vier geselecteerde ont-werpteams gingen na hoe de stadsgroei een nieuwe investeringsgolf voor onze twintigste-eeuwse gordel op gang kan brengen. Die moet niet alleen bijkomende woningen opleveren maar ook nieuwe publieke ruimte, hoogwaardig openbaar vervoer en kwaliteitsvolle stedelijke voorzieningen.

Opting for the twentieth century belt

Labo XX (‘Labo twenty’) is a project ini-tiated by the city of Antwerp in order to explore and renew the city’s so-called twentieth century belt – the area that lies outside the ring motorway and the ‘Singel’. After years of successful urban renewal in the city centre and nineteenth century neighbourhoods, the exodus of the city’s population appears to have been reversed and the inner city is once again an attractive place to live. It is in the inner city that the impact of the increase in population has been felt most notably. The possibilities for further densification have largely been exhausted.

According to the city council, future pop-ulation growth can best be absorbed in the area outside the ring motorway and the ‘Singel’, which is in need of rejuve-nation. By opting for the twentieth cen-tury belt, the city of Antwerp can avoid the overdevelopment of the inner city but also prevent using even more of the scarce open spaces inside and outside the city’s boundaries. Since the twentieth century belt has long been outside the focus of urban planners, the city author-ities launched a competition to start to explore its potential.

This exhibition shows the research by design carried out by the four selected design teams. The teams examined how urban expansion might bring about a new wave of investment which, in addition to additional housing, should yield new public spaces, high-quality public trans-port and an urban standard of amenities for the twentieth century belt.
