In that time, the town had been

    developing intensively: we got a

university of our own and had started, in

addition to the railways, connecting the

town with the Middle Europe through

air traffic from our own airport, as well

as by building numerous highways. The

price for the new, independent Republic

of Slovenia was a deadlock in the

development, which we are promptlytrying to make up for.

Our industrial traditions, our high level

of the cultural offer, the ever-growing

    connection between the University and

    the industrial processes, the new-coming

    generations of young researchers and

innovators, a connection to the world

    and breathtaking outdoors with the

oldest vine in the world in the very core

of the city put Maribor on the map of the

    world’s most economically interesting

cities. Not only that Maribor is a city of

    past opportunities, Maribor remains

and also is a city of opportunities oftoday and of tomorrow.

Welcome to Maribor! Invest in Maribor!

    THE MAYOR OF MoM

In the beginning of the twentieth century, Maribor was a self-confident city that had,

without a trace of shame, flirted with the metropolitan Vienna. In the times of Yugoslavia

we had been the second biggest industrial town in the entire country.

The city by the river Drava, that is

    celebrating its 850th anniversary

from the first time it had ever been

    mentioned in the written documents

this very year, had developed under a

    castle called the Castrum Marchburch,

mentioned in the documents in the

early 1164. In the year 1209, the city got

the rights to start trading, the market

rights, and it was mentioned for the

very first time as a town. Only a year

later, the townsfolk started to build a

two-kilometre long city wall with which

the old city core had been fenced in.

The wall had then been additionally

    fortified with building the defence

towers which later helped defend the

city even from the Turkish invasions.

The buildings of the Medieval Maribor

Maribor is the second biggest city in Slovenia. It is a university town and the

economical as well as the cultural centre of the North Eastern Slovenia. It also has the

had been built from stones and wood

which had taken its toll on many

arsons. In the 17th century the plague

swept through town, killing a third of

the entire population. With a humble

    gratefulness that the plague was

defeated, the people of Maribor built

one of the most beautiful statues in the

city, the Mary’s or the Plague column.

The building of railway tracks connecting

Vienna and Trieste back in the 1846

    greatly contributed to the development

of Maribor. A once small town started

    growing rapidly, expanded and

    industrialized, the traffic started to

expand and it was soon a necessity to

build new roads and bridges. However,

due to all this changes, Maribor started

    to lose its medieval portrait.

There is a special place in the history

of Maribor reserved for the General

Rudolf Maister who gave the outlines

and defended the Northern border of

Slovenia and this way made sure that

Maribor remained a part of Slovenia.

After the World War I, Maribor was the

fastest growing town in the Country

with numerous industrial plants in the

Melje borough. During the World War

II the Germans invaded Maribor which

resulted in strong bombing attacks on

the city from the allies. Maribor had

been so damaged and destroyed, the

consequences could still be seen for

decades after the war had ended. After

the World War II, Maribor started rapidly

    developing its economy and became

    one of the industrially strongest

    towns in Yugoslavia. However, the

    town’s development had been mostly

    10 11

industrial and therefore it had, in

the 1990s as Yugoslavia fell apart,

lost its most important market – the

Yugoslav market, and found itself in an

    excruciating economic crisis.

However, a strong will, firm ambitions

and a new vision gave back life to the

    town and opened new opportunities

    for its development. The Maribor

    economy has now been restructured

    and an accelerated development of

    tourism and other service activities

have started. A vast improvement has

been reached especially in the field

of Culture. Every year, there is the

Lent Festival – the biggest festival in

Slovenia, as well as one of the biggest

in Europe. In the year 2012 Maribor

was, together with partner cities, the

    European Capital of Culture.

Maribor is a University City and there

are more than 18 000 bachelor and post

graduate students in the University of

Maribor. It is also an important high

school centre, since it has 19 high

schools, hosting almost 16 000 pupils.

Employing well-educated staff is of key

importance for the success of a company

    in tough economic times.

    Important information for investors

is also the fact that people are highly

    proficient in foreign languages. Slovene

people in general are famous for being

on the very top of all such European

surveys. The surveys show that in

Slovenia, 92 percent of people between

the age of 25 years and 64 years,

speak at least one foreign language,

out of which over 70 percent speak

two or more foreign languages. Most

    common are English and German,

youth, however, is showing more and

more interest in learning French, Italian,

    Spanish and Russian.

The economic and financial crisis has

    strongly affected Maribor and many

people lost their jobs. Our greatest

    concern is unemployment among young

people, however, it can at the same

time send a positive signal to potential

investors, since it means the the town

    can offer quality workforce.

Maribor is the second largest city in

Slovenia and it prides itself with an

exquisite geo-strategic position since it is

situated in the heart of Europe and on the

     junction of important European trading

routes. The favourable position of the

town enables companies a fast access to

the markets of the Middle, Eastern and

Western Europe. Maribor is also an ideal

entering point for the markets of the

Western Balkans. This is not only due to

the short distances, but also because of

the mutual history, cultural and linguistic

    similarities and the old, long-lasting

    business connections Slovenia has with

    the nations of the region.

Maribor is also a traffic centre since it

lies on the junction of traffic routes from

the Western into the Eastern, as well as

into the Southern Europe. The city has

great highway connections with all the

    neighbouring Countries so it literally

takes you just a few minutes of driving

to enter Austria, less than an hour to

enter Hungary or Croatia and two and a

half hours to Italy. Through the network

of modern highways, the city is also well

Slovenia has more than 1200 kilometres

of railway tracks, out of which over

500 are electrical, intended for both

the passenger and freight traffic. One

can reach Maribor also by one of many

    international trains. There are direct

    connections with Vienna, Graz, Zagreb

and Rijeka. The railways traffic splits

Europe into 10 corridors. Maribor is

    extremely important because it lies

on the junction of the 5th and 10th

railway corridor. It is also important

to emphasize that a reconstruction of

With the initiative of the economic

    organizations and expert unions, a

    university course called Electro-technics

started in full speed in the 1960, which

proves that this particular sector had

already been well developed in those

years. Later, this faculty grew into a modern

    ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRO-TECHNICAL INDUSTRY

    Faculty of Electrical Engineering and

Computer Science which is still to this day

tightly linked with economic sector and has

educated over 2000 graduates. There is also

in addition to the traditional »hard«

    infrastructure like roads, railways, water

    supply networks etc.. investments in

the so-called soft infrastructure are also

of the utmost importance. It is a fact

    that these new technologies, including

    the information and communication

technologies (ICT), play the key role in

the production of products with a high

added value. There are several very

successful companies in the field of ICT

    Hardware and metal processing industry

is an important part of the Maribor

economy since there are several successful

companies situated in Maribor who are

producing top products from metal. The

‘winning horses’ of the branch are the

    Maribor foundry Maribor (MLM) and

Palfinger. MLM has a tradition of soon to be

90 years. The foundation of their production

line are articles of aluminium alloys and

copper while they are also a global supplier

    of automotive, electrical and mechanical,

as well as construction industries. Palfinger,

on the other hand, is the leading global

    company manufacturer for hydraulic lifting,

    loading and handling solutions.

    HARDWARE AND

    METAL PROCESSING

INDUSTRYDue to new trends and technologies

in the construction business and in the

field of building heating systems, wood

is becoming a more and more strategic

raw material to have, and very soon there

is going to be a deficiency of it in Europe.

Almost 60 percent of Slovenia is covered

with forests, which is right after Finland

and Sweden on the scale of the most

forested countries in the EU. It has a vast

developing potential in the sector. There are

    several successful companies producing

top-notch products made of wood. There is

a secondary school and a college in Maribor

    providing enough expert personnel for

    the forthcoming development of the

    woodworking industry.

    numerous sports and relaxation centres,

then the fact that the number of tourists

in Maribor is constantly and increasingly

growing in the last 15 years is not

which is a part of the Eastern Alps. On

the other side, the city is surrounded

    with numerous smaller hills, lavishly

    decorated with vineyards. The river

Drava is also something to remember

since it flows right through the middle

of the city. The geo-strategic position
