  • The Chamorro (Chamoru) and Carolinians are the indigenous people from the Marianas Islands archipelago. Their history dates back 4,000 to 4,500 years, when people from Southeast Asia sailed and eventually migrated to the Marianas. Although the islands are politically divided between the Northern Marianas and Guam, the culture keeps much in common. It is largely influenced by Spanish culture during the European expeditions, when the area was colonized by Spain for over 300 years. Many words are derived from the Spanish language. Today, Chamorro is still spoken in the islands but, after the US took over the territory, English is more widely used. However, Island Traveler wants to share with you some common phrases that will help you speak local during your visit:

    many CulTures in Paradise

  • FeATURe

Saipan, Tinian and Rota sit like jewels just where the Philippine Sea touches the great Pacific Ocean. Over the centuries many cultures have come to these idyllic islands and left their mark. The Southeast Asian cultures from Malay stock and what was to become the Philippines sent explorers and settlers here. That melting pot became the indigenous Chamorro people and their rich culture has pervaded the islands since the beginning of human habitation here about 4,000 years ago.

The star Navigators from the Caroline Islands also came and traded and finally settled here as have many other Micronesian islanders such as Yapese, Palauans, Chukese, Kosrae and Marshall Islanders, Pohnpeians and many others. All live here now along with residents originally from Japan, Korea, China, Philippines, Russia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Nepal, the USA, and others. All these and more live in peace and harmony on the peaceful islands of the Northern Marianas. All have brought their own cultures and share them with you now.
