ANelderlyman,who is not sureof his age, is waiting for hisday of death at home after hewas allegedly chased away bythe Mthatha General Hospi-tal, with nurses claiming that

he was not sick compared with other peoplewho were being treated there.

This is despite Mvuthuza Khovana enter-ing the hospital on a stretcher.After his rejection, he had to hire a car to

get back home as he had been transported byambulance to the hospital.Khovana is lying sickonhisdilapidatedbed

at home, which is not a sterile environment,nursed by his wife and younger brother, whohave to change him and clean up if he wetsthe bed.

He cannot sit, stand or walk and lies on hisbed day and night. If he needs to move, some-one must come and turn him.As a result of his long time in the bed he

has developed sores on his lower body. Hemust endure unbearable pain because he hasno medication to ease it.Khovana’s problem started last year

around October when he fell on the doorstep.After that his legs failed to carry him be-

cause of lack of use.Because of the pain, he called an ambulance

and was taken to hospital, where he was

turned away twice.Now the old man says he is resigned to the

fact that he will not get medical attentionfrom the hospital.“Nyana (my son) I did not believe it when

the nurses told me I was not ill even thoughI was in unbearable pain.“I am still askingmyself how sick you need

to be for the hospital to admit you.“I am hoping that a good Samaritan can

come and assist me, but I don’t want to be inthat hospital. They should rather take me tothe hospital in East London,” the old mansaid.“I am still astonished,” said his younger

brother, Sebenzile Khovana,whowas presentduring Express’s visit to the old man’s home.

“What kind of hospital can say a person isnot ill when he cannot move or even take aspoon to his mouth?”The homestead is not far from former presi-

dent Nelson Mandela’s grave on his farm inQunu.Mandela is globally known of fighting for

the liberationof this country, andpeoplewereexpected to benefit from the freedom hefought for, also in the health system. But de-spite this his neighbour has been turned backtwice by the Mthatha General Hospital.Express tried several times to call the hospi-

tal’s communication department,but in vain.At time of going to print no answers had

been received to the questions we sent to thedepartment’s spokesperson.
