Twin sisters Jayne and Sarah Moore are excited about their new premises just opened in Darfield.

It is great to celebrate with successful businesses when they expand and can offer the local community, especially their loyal customers, a brand new, purpose built, facility to show off their extensive range of services. Well, one of Darfield’s iconic businesses Sugar & Spice

Beauty has recently expanded into beautiful new premises within the same shopping centre (Mid West Mews) at 45b South Terrace. Sugar and Spice had been in it’s previous location for almost ten years af ter purchasing the Silk Body and Beauty business and relocating

Some of the key members of the ‘More for You’ team:

Jayne Moore: Jayne is now back in the Salon having

just taken some maternity leave following the birth of

her third son. She commented that while spending

me with her children was a joy, she was loving her

return to work and had missed meeng and seeing all

the friendly faces of the Salon’s clients. Jayne’s

extensive experience encompasses thirteen years in

the industry, as well as previous employment in a top

UK day spa.

Sarah Moore: Now co-owner with Jayne, Sarah has

been an integral part of the team since 2010 and brings

a wealth of experience to the Salon. She has a

pharmaceucal background and qualificaons in

Beauty and Nails. She is also the Salon’s resident expert

in skin needling and can explain the process and how it

can assist clients look years younger.

Inge: has been with Sugar and Spice since 2013 and

brings with her from Belgium, European qualificaons

with emphasis on relaxaon treatments. Her massages

(Relaxaon and Deep Tissue) are truly amazing and she

has been dubbed the ‘Relaxaon Guru’.

Paige: started with the Salon as a junior therapist back

in 2012 and has since completed her Internaonal

Beauty Qualificaons graduang in the top 10% of her

class. She has a natural talent for beauty therapy,

excels in make-up, and has a3racted a considerable

following for these a3ributes.

Bridget: Nail technician and Beauty therapist Bridget is

a well known local currently compleng an adult

apprenceship through HITO. She is one of the valued

and competent members of the ‘More for You’ team

looking forward to welcoming clients in the new and

wonderful premises the business now occupies.

Inge of More for You with their new premises first client Hollie Barnett in the beautiful and elegant Salon reception area. Hollie

was presented with a gift from More For You in recognition of this.

as well. “More For You, Skin, Beauty and Nails better reflects the professional expertise of the team and is a tongue in cheek play on words, with our surname,” said co-owner Sarah Moore. “The change in name is a great way to start the next era of the Salon, but rest assured, we promise, as always, the same friendly staff , the same professional expertise and the same warm greetings.” All the therapists at More For You ac t i v e l y unde r t ak e profess ional deve lopment training two to three times each year to keep their skills current and to keep abreast of what is undoubtedly an every-changing industry. “We encourage everyone

whether you are a current customer or not, to drop in, say hello and even have a tour. We know all our existing clients will absolutely love this new environment,” Jayne smiled. More For You held a client evening to celebrate their grand open ing on Wednesday , December 9th for all existing clients to ‘christen’ the new building and an open day is scheduled to be held on Saturday, December 12thSaturday, December 12thSaturday, December 12thSaturday, December 12th, where visitors are welcome to view this beautiful, new Salon. Congratulations to the entire More For You team - another example of Darfield and the surrounding districts advancing forward with facilities to rival the best in the country.

..continued from front page...continued from front page...continued from front page...continued from front page. Jayne commented excitingly that she was overjoyed with the way the Salon has finally come together. “It has been a painstaking task to get everything just the way we wanted it so as to give all our clients the best experience they could receive anywhere in the country. We have a new menu of services, some new equipment, gorgeous rooms and specific areas for manicures, nails and pedicures. Our facial and massage rooms are amazing and the large, comfy reception area will show off all of our salon exclusive skincare and make-up, wonderfully.” The multi award winning Salon already had a reputation for excellence and this popularity saw the team often struggling for space in the old premises. That definitely won’t be a problem in the new facility that has been des igned in conjunction with industry experts to ensure every treatment could be managed with the customer’s comfort in mind. The inclusion of additional generously sized rooms, new equipment and a separate nail and manicure area means extra comfort for both staff and customers alike. With the move to new premises there has been a name change

Malvern Community Board (MCB) are again giving back to the community, this time by hosting a Santa’s Grotto at the Darfield Jail. The grotto is a free event for families, “we wanted to provide an alternative to travelling into town and being in a commercial environment. After asking people about their experiences in town, most said they felt obliged to purchase something, when visiting a store to see Santa,” said Jenny Jenny Jenny Jenny Gallagher, Gallagher, Gallagher, Gallagher, MCB chair. The support of local businesses has enabled a free gift to be given to each child visiting Santa, as well as a free raffle for adults to enter. Also important to the Board was the opportunity for free photos with

the big man. “We are aware that if you would like photos with Santa in other environments, they can end up costing a fortune. This community event means that all children can visit Santa and their parents/caregivers are welcome to bring cameras/phones to take their own free photos. There won’t be a commercial photographer on site.” explained MCB’s Bob Bob Bob Bob MugfordMugfordMugfordMugford. The MCB are encouraging all

pre-schools and primary schools to arrange group outings for children to visit Santa. They would like to see as many children as possible making the most of this wonderful opportunity to see him and chat about the all important Christmas present list!. Current owner of Darfield Hair Boutique, Emma MillarEmma MillarEmma MillarEmma Millar, is packing away her scissors and comb in the new year to venture into the exciting world of parenthood. Emma and husband RegRegRegReg are expecting their first bundle of joy to arrive in February. In the meantime Emma is busy preparing and welcoming new owners to the Boutique, during the busy lead up to Christmas. Emma is absolutely delighted to introduce new owners; mother-daughter duo, BronwenBronwenBronwenBronwen and Phoebe SeawardPhoebe SeawardPhoebe SeawardPhoebe Seaward and is especially excited to be mentoring the talented young Phoebe. Phoebe attended both Darfield Primary and Darfield High School and will be a familiar face to many in the district. More recently she has been following her hair-styling dreams in Rolleston, completing her first two years of an apprenticeship with flying colours and even being encouraged by her tutor to enter the prestigious HITO NZ Apprentice of the year Awards. Bronwen will also be a familiar face to many as she has worked as a teacher at Darfield High School for the past eight years and taught numerous local children. When the opportunity to purchase the Darfield Hair Boutique came up, both mother and daughter decided to seize it with both hands. “It’s something we have always wanted to do together. Once we had met Emma, we knew we wanted the salon, she is just the kind of mentor Phoebe needs,” said Bronwen excitedly. Equally as enthusiastic as her mother, Phoebe is really looking forward to meeting all of the Boutique’s clients. “I can’t wait to meet all Emma’s regulars and continue the same high level of service they have all come to know and love. I am excited to bring everything I have learnt, back home to Darfield clients,” Phoebe said with a big smile. Together with welcoming the new owners of Darfield Hair Boutique, Emma would like to farewell her loyal and valued clients. “I feel so confident that all my clients will be very happy with Phoebe, her colour-work is truly inspirational, her care and

attention to detail with all hairdressing skills, is amazing. I am very impressed with her skills,” Emma said. Emma is looking forward to popping in and working the odd day, perhaps once the baby has arrived. “I’d like to thank all my clients

and encourage them to watch for all the exciting changes that will be coming to the Boutique. I wish Phoebe and Bronwen all the very best.” Emma’s sentiment of well wishes to the Seawards is sure to be echoed by clients, both old and new, throughout the community.

ANITA MOLLOY-ROBERTS

Another term has whizzed by for the children and parents at Darfield Playcentre; one filled with lots of learning, fun activities, and outings. With the warmer weather water play has become popular, along with plenty of time spent out under the shady trees. Darfield Playcentre’s rolls have steadily increased over the past year with new families joining the them. This is not only hugely exciting, but it has allowed Playcentre to offer a Friday morning session, meaning they are now open five mornings a week. Playcentre children and parents have thoroughly enjoyed some fun outings this term. A couple of the favourites were the Darfield Primary School Pet day and a visit to the School’s New Entrants class for some of the older children to get a feel of what school will be like. Term four is always a busy one and this year even more so with the addition of the Darfield Playcentre Christmas Market. This is a new fundraising event for the Centre, and a very successful one. The organisers were extremely happy with the day and grateful to those in the

community who supported it. Another successful fundraiser for Darfield Playcentre is their Christmas raffle. Organisers

express their appreciative thanks to all those that donated prizes, as well as all those who purchased tickets. “Congratulations to the winners of any of the 32 amazing prizes. “Playcentre is a non-profit organisation who rely on fundraising to provide a s t i m u l a t i n g l e a r n i n g environment for children to learn and deve lop, we appreciate all the support from our community, thank you.”

The team at Pit Lane Motorcycles would like to wish you all a very merry

Christmas and a happy New Year!

On Saturday, December 5th firefighters from throughout the South Island converged on Westport for the South Island Firefighter Combat Challenge. Hosted by the Westport Volunteer Fire Brigade, the event is described by many as ‘the toughest two minutes in sport’. The 45 competitors require a huge amount of skill and fitness as they battled through five physically gruelling tasks. Hayley Rossiter Hayley Rossiter Hayley Rossiter Hayley Rossiter and Alan Alan Alan Alan Kittelty, Kittelty, Kittelty, Kittelty, from Darfield Volunteer Fire Br igade, not only completed the challenge, but also performed exceptionally well. Hayley created a New Zealand record-breaking time. The challenge included: • Climbing a six storey tower

carrying a length of 70mm, 19kg flaked hose.

• Hoisting a 70mm hose coil up six storeys.

• Chopping using a 4kg shot hammer to drive a beam 1.5 metres.

• Extending a charged length of 45mm hose to knock down a disc.

• Dragging a life sized dummy a distance of 30.5m.

Hayley competed in her first full course event convincingly and won the Open Female section in a New Zealand record time for a female of 3.12.28. Alan beat his personal best with a time of 2.30.89 which placed him third in the Over 40 section. The two Darfield superstars then combined forces to come first in the mixed event. As if this was not enough excitement for one day, the dynamic duo teamed up with three other train ing colleagues from Christchurch Airport and Sumner and went on to place third in the team relay.

In recent weeks the children at Darfield Preschool and Nursery have been regularly harvesting produce from the Centre’s newly established vegetable garden. The gardens were erected in the winter months and the children began planting in the early spring. It has been a wonderful learning journey for the children. They have actively participated in nurturing the plants and watched the effects and rewards of daily watering and care. Already there is an abundance of produce and families are being invited to help themselves to as much as they like. The gardens not only provide a setting rich in environmental learning, but are also a popular and serene place to spend time with friends. The garden has tables, ornaments and even a game of noughts and crosses that the children just love to sit and play. Darfield Preschool and Nursery are certainly proud of the wonderful and meaningful learning opportunit ies the garden development has opened for their tamariki. The Centre’s philosophy of encouraging discovery through hands on learning and developing environmental respect is strongly reflected in the work the teachers do with the children in the garden. Soon spring onions, beetroot, cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, carrots and much, much, more will be ready to harvest (yum, yum!). The gardens will be officially opened on December 13th. This will be an occasion for all children and their families to celebrate this awesome asset, as well as an opportunity to officially acknowledge the generous sponsors and members of the community who have contributed to it becoming a reality.

Darfield Hotel publicans, Debbie and Ray O’Connell hosted a number of locals at their hospitality marquee at the event,

which was much appreciated by all those attending. It was a wonderful day out with gifts from Santa for the children,

races and competitions.

surprised at the number of people that attended this event, as it was the first one that we have held. This is a good indication that if we were to make this an annual event, there would be an even bigger number of attendees next year,” Jenny said. The majority of the volunteers have been living locally for many years but the MCB were pleasantly surprised to see some newer faces at the event. Some had only been in the area for six years and were already keen to give back to the community, which the Board found to be quite remarkable. Bob added, “around five community groups were represented at the morning tea, however we are aware of at least thirty active groups in the district. Many of the volunteers were not just involved with one group, many are involved with multiple community groups,

which is amazing to see,” Bob added. “We wanted to give them something to recognise this dedication.” The morning tea is a small part of the Malvern Community Board’s striving to give back to the community. “The community would not function without volunteers giving their time and support where needed and we are also aware of the need for more recruits.” “If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact us,” Bob said. “There are a wide variety of different community groups and we would be only too happy to help match people with a suitable group for their skills,” Bob concluded. Canterbury Road Sa fe t y Coordinators are running a joint campaign aimed at reducing crashes as a result of rural motor ist s d r ink ing then driving. Selwyn District Council and three other rural Canterbury Councils are part icipat ing in the Christmas and New Year campaign, which encourages drivers to plan a safe ride home if they have a few drinks during the festive season and summer holiday period. Many people believe drink drivers have a lower chance of being stopped by police when they drive on rural back roads. Canterbury Police will be carrying out more random patrols on rural roads over the coming summer. The booze bus will also be deployed in rural areas, as well as urban areas. In Selwyn District between 2010 and 2014, 145 crashes involving alcohol were recorded by Police. In this period there were thirteen deaths and 35 people seriously injured in the district, as a result of alcohol related crashes. “ T h i s y ea r ’ s c ampa ign encourages drivers to plan how they can get home safely before they go out,” said Selwyn Road Safety Coordinator Ngaire Ngaire Ngaire Ngaire Tinning.Tinning.Tinning.Tinning. “Good options to think about are to have a sober driver, use the courtesy van, share designated driver duties, or invite friends to sleep over so they don’t need to be on the road if they have been drinking. “Dr ink dr iving is never acceptable as it puts everyone at risk of being injured or killed in a road crash, that could have been avoided,” Ngaire stressed. In many cases when drivers are a f f e c t e d b y a l c o h o l , inappropriate speed and failure to wear a safety belt are factors that can also contribute to the severity of the crash. Most crashes involving alcohol happen over the weekend - from Friday evening until Sunday morning. “Alcohol affects everyone differently and a number of factors are involved, such as how much, if anything, you have had to eat and what weight you are. As it’s not easy to say how much different people could drink under the new law, the best advice is for people to

avoid driving, if they have been drinking, and to plan ahead to get home safely,” Ngaire commented. As part of the summer campaign, posters, coasters, bar mats and pens have been given out to hotels, taverns and other licenced premises in Selwyn. Ngaire added that local hotels and taverns already do a g r e a t j o b w i t h h o s t responsibility, as almost all premises have courtesy vans

and the Council campaign is designed to support their efforts. Locally a large number of sports clubs and local businesses have also taken up the opportunity to help promote the campaign by getting safety messages to their members. “The design is again quite light-hearted and we have found that the items have been popular with the public in Selwyn and other parts of Canterbury,” Ngaire concluded.

Police are reminding drivers to ‘check your speed’, as from Tuesday, December 1st, the speed ‘threshold’ reduces to 4km/hr through until the end of January. Similar to the previous two summer holiday periods, Police will be enforcing the reduced 4km/h speed threshold from December 1st, 2015 to January 31st, 2016. This will be backed by a highly visible presence on the nation's roads as part of a targeted road safety campaign, which will also feature a strong focus on impaired driving and other high risk behaviour. This means that every driver stopped can expect to be breath tested. “Police want all families to have a great summer that is memorable for the good times, not a summer ruined by the grief of losing a family member to a fatal crash,” says Superintendent Steve GreallySteve GreallySteve GreallySteve Greally, National Manager of Road Policing. “It’s the loved ones left behind that have to carry the pain and devastation a fatal crash causes.” With December 1st also marking the one year anniversary of legislation lowering the adult alcohol l imit , pol ice are encouraged that many drivers seem to be getting the message and are deciding not to drive after drinking. "While it is still relatively early days, what's pleasing is that as

at the end of October 2015, we have seen almost two and a half thousand fewer drivers caught in the over 400mcg/80mg bracket since the new legislation came in, compared with the same period the previous year. "That's a really positive sign and we encourage all motorists to keep that up.” Steve said Police would be delighted to not issue another infringement throughout the summer, or to have to knock on the door of loved ones to deliver tragic news. "Every police officer dreads having to knock on the door of someone's family to tell them their son, daughter, parent or another loved family member has been needlessly killed in a crash. "We'd also be delighted to never have t o i s s ue anothe r infringement, because aside from the fact it actually costs us money to issue notices, it would

show that everyone was driving safely and responsibly, and the trauma on our roads would reduce overnight." The previous two summers marked the two lowest ever recorded number of deaths for a December/January period since records began. From December 1st, 2014 to January 31st, 2015 there were fifty road deaths, compared to forty two road the previous year. By comparison, the worst December-January road toll recorded in the last 25 years was 124 deaths in 1990. “The challenge to all of us on the roads this summer is see an even better result, but we all need to play our part to make that happens,” Steve said. The road safety campaign is backed strongly by Safer Journeys partners ACC, NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Transport.

To the Editors: I would like to thank the Sheffield area community and Taege Engineering for the wonderful get together last Saturday. It allowed all of us to meet new neighbours and greet old ones. The children really had a good time. It was a thrill watching them with Santa. The food was amazing and I loved every minute of it. Thank you.

Mrs W. Webster, Sheffield.

Lincoln v. GreendaleLincoln v. GreendaleLincoln v. GreendaleLincoln v. Greendale Not a lot to report. Another low scoring game, with each innings being completed well under the limit of 45 overs. Hot weather, but then N.W. breeze cooled things down. Outfield slow, but didn’t look it. Greendale 74Greendale 74Greendale 74Greendale 74 L.. Bragan 18 B. Chapman 17 Lincoln 75/1, Lincoln 75/1, Lincoln 75/1, Lincoln 75/1, and so won by nine wickets. By the way - Greendale now wear colour (pyjamas). What is wrong with white? What is next - purple bat?

Weedons v. Sth. MalvernWeedons v. Sth. MalvernWeedons v. Sth. MalvernWeedons v. Sth. Malvern Ditto. Sth. Malvern are a better team than this result indicates. Their own pitch is artificial, and playing on grass is always a challenge to adjust to the pace of the

wicket. Sth. Malvern scored 106, of which 29 were extras. Weedons 107/0, and so they won by ten wickets.

Footnote:Footnote:Footnote:Footnote: Trevor Wall, Malvern secretary, produced figures once with a cricket ball, instead of his pen. In a Sheffield v. Darfield game (1983/84), with his right arm off-spin, he took 9/36. The other wicket read - ct. T. Wall (mid-off), b. M. Frew.
