Pleasecontinue to help make a difference! - Celebrate your loves ones with a memorial donation - Donate stocks and bonds that you already own - Leave a sum of money to Hill House in your will - Establish a charitable trust - Name Hill House Hospice as a beneficiary on your lifeinsurance policy Thanks to Canada's income tax legislation, your charitabledonations can provide you with a substantial tax savings. NEWSLETTER 2018
It is with enormous grief and sadness that Idedicate this newsletter in memory of Jenny Dixon(Personal Support Worker). Jenny was killed in acar accident by a drunk driver on her way homeafter her shift at Hill House Hospice in October. Ithank all of you that have sent your condolences.Your cards, emails and phone calls have made adifference. Thanks for continuing to support usemotionally and financially. Jenny made adifference. You make a difference. Thanks for that. The following is ‘in part’ the eulogy I gave atJenny’s funeral. We have been asking ourselves WHY!! Whydid this happen? And WHY did this happen toJenny. Right now we recognize that there are noanswers that will bring Jenny back, “Why”, Is not aquestion to be answered today, it is “our” cry ofpain. Jenny was such an integral part of our Hill House Hospice family. Her work ethic, her laughter, sarcasm, love of a good joke or a funny story and her ‘robust’ vocabulary are only a few of thethings we will miss about her. Her quick wit and sense of humour with our clients and their familiesmade them forget, if just for a few moments in time, how sick they were. She always asked the right questions; not intrusive…but just enough to get them to talk. Jennywas a great listener, she was interested in what everyone had to say. It wasn’t unusual for her tobring in a whole cheesecake, a special type of chocolate , a movie or anything else a client hadmentioned they would like. Jenny had a HUGE heart, and the best hugs. She was involved in so many causes in thecommunity. Jenny never missed our main fundraiser ‘Hike for Hospice’. She didn’t just getsponsors and help with organizing, Jenny and her kids baked cookies and cupcakes anddecorated them for all the families to enjoy. When she was at work, she always had a to do list….she never left without having everythingcrossed off that list, Jenny was a perfectionist at work! The night before Jenny died; we had had anursing meeting. Most of us spoke and joked with her before we left that evening not knowing itwould be our last goodbye. Jenny loved her work; she loved each and every one of us. She loved her family to the moonand back. Her husband Bill was always quick to get at the tasks that Jenny ‘volunTOLD’ him to do.Her love for her kids was insurmountable; she always had their backs. No one messed withanyone Jenny loved. She was the ultimate ‘Momma Bear’. We would hear…”oh my God, Aprilsaid the cutest thing yesterday”, or “Jackie had the best story ever” and always “I’m so proud ofAaron”. Jenny leaves us with her gifts of laughter, love, humour and sarcasm. She also leaves us hergift of grief. Grief that we share, yet experience individually. It is good that we can grieve. Griefcleanses us, affirms our ability to love, and prepares us to move on with life. I was out walking Wednesday night and I was crying…..all of a sudden it started to rain very hard, and I realized it was the only thing that had made sense all week. “When we are crying, we are notalone, our whole community cries with us". Anne-Marie Dean, RN CHPCN(C) Executive Director
Sometimes we can’t let go of memories because they are a constant reminder of
a great story that we never expected to end.
Grief, I’ve learned, is really just love you
want to give, but cannot. All that
unspent love gathers up in the corners of
your eyes, the lump in your throat, and
in the hollow part of your chest. Grief is
just love with no place to go”
(Jamie Anderson)
