    Weekly Headlines

Hannah to arrive on 9 th August

Jerra Rotarys 6 th international exchange student will bearriving on 9 th August. As this is a Saturday we expect wewill have a good size welcoming party at the airport.

Hannah, from Germany, is very excited about her exchangeand has dreamed of coming to Australia since she was quiteyoung. She will be leaving behind her parents and youngerbrother to come and live with us for 12 months, through toJuly next year. We will of course adopt her as our own andsoon have her speaking like an Aussie.

Hannah is currently getting to know a little bit about hercounsellors (Peter and Sue) and her host families (Bruce and Liz, Glenn and Glenda, Davidand Anne, and Paul and Sue) through email exchange. She is also in touch with Jasmin, our last exchange student, who in Hannahs words has told me a lot of great thingsabout her (and my) families and Jerrabomberra . So hopefully the scary aspect oftravelling across the world and being away from home for 12 months will be significantlysoftened by the knowledge she is currently collecting.

In this weeks meeting reports we are able to bring to readers some pictures (cartoons) of the Directors rarely seen

    before in print.

    Meeting commenced at 6.32pm

Welcome:President Paul welcomedeveryone to the secondmeeting of the 2014-15 Rotaryyear, and to the 800 th meetingof the club since it

    commenced.President Paul invited Chris to

give the Charge to Australia, and Glenda to do the toastto Rotary International. Glenda, not being able to thinkof any other international clubs, once again toastedGlasgow.

Apologies:Mez acted as AttendanceOfficer and reported apologiesfrom Rebecca, Robert, Anton(overseas) and Jon (overseas),

and a late apology from Sue J.It was also noted that David S,David B, and Lizzie are on LoA.

Reminder: Members who are unable toattend meetings should provide apologies tothe attendance officer.

From the Desk of the President:President Paul advised that he was hoping to induct Marie- Claire at this weeksmeeting; however she has fallen victim to the flu and could not attend. As such this

event will now take place at next weeks meeting. Not wanting to miss out on doing apresentation, President Paul was pleasedto invite Past President Paul to step

forward. President Paul then advised members that PP Paulsdonations over the years to the Rotary Foundation had reachedUS$1000 and as such he is awarded a sapphire pin to his PaulHarris Fellow. President Paul then presented PP Paul with the PHFSapphire Pin. (See Photo)

President Paul continued by provided members with a brief prcis

of the Board meeting held on Wednesday 9 July, with two pointsof particular note:

The Board unanimously determined to offer Anne DavisHonorary Membership for the 2014-2015 year

The Board determined that as a future policy of the Club, members who have advised they will attend an event andwithdraw as short notice, when the club has already committed to costs, will be liable to pay any costsincurred. For example with the recent Mystery Tour 3 members cancelled on the day of the tour, andwere happy to still pay for their places even though they did not attend.

Now that I am finally in charge Yes I am in charge!! should I tell

the members what my plans are for the year? Mmm let me think .. Nah, I will keep them guessing.

Report: SecretaryGlenn is back with us for theforeseeable future. And hewas ecstatic thathe actually received ahardcopy letter!! The letterfrom Menslink was athankyou for the clubs

donation of $500 as part of our disbursements at theend of PP Pauls year.

Not quite a letter, but a nice postcard, was alsoreceived from Bruce and Liz who continue to enjoytheir holiday in the US.

Glenn then presented Mez with a new club badge.Apparently due to the length of Mezs name, and allthe post-nominals and other titles that Mez wished tohave included, the standard club badge was just toosmall. So Glenn, with an appropriate sense ofhumour, had a special badge made just for Mez.(See photos)

    Report: Treasurer

Jon is away on a much deservedoverseas holiday until 12 August. In hisabsence David Bailey is continuing toact as Treasurer, despite being on LoAhimself. (What a player)

Pres Paul noted that David hadattended the Board meeting on Wednesday 8 th and presentedto the Board the Cash Disbursements and Cash Receipts forthe final quarter of the 2013-14 Rotary Year. The Board hadapproved the statements.

Mez with her new name badge(note the normal size badge she is wearing)

From a membership and communication perspective the Board has given in principal

Special Speaker Presentation Our very own Glenn Wahlert on ClubRunner

After overcoming a few technical challenges, Glenn gave members a veryinteresting insight into the workings of the clubs website and ClubRunner

software. Our Website has been improved significantly since we determinedto exploit the advantages that come with ClubRunner. The software isspecifically designed for Rotary clubs to run their websites and conduct clubbusiness. Our web address is www.jerrarotary.org.au

Glenn explained that while we have the public website working well weneed more current content from Directors and members to make the sitemore interesting and dynamic. We also now need to start having membersuse the site more as a club resource. Glenn showed members how to log onand update their member profiles and personal information, and suggestedanyone who experiences difficulties simply gives him a call.

The site software enables the club to store business records, generate emails (if members keep their info up-to-date) and many other club administration activities, which we will learn about in the future.

Market Master: Anton has unfortunately had to make a trip back to Austria at short notice so was notavailable to brief on the Markets.

In his absence, the secretary reminded members (on behalf of the acting treasurer) thatwhen reporting and banking money from the markets it was important to include within thereference a breakdown of the takings by Tables, Bags and Water. This is because the moniesare allocated differently within the clubs accounts. It is suggested the reference should be

as follows Markets [date] T:$120 B:$130, W:$32 . The bank is happy to take a singledeposit with this type of reference. Also please remember to always leave the $20 float(with some $1 coins) in the cash box. ( Some naughty people have been forgetting!!)

Joker:Chris delivered the joke of the week (involving a priesta rabbi and a car!). Pam then ran the even ings joker.President Paul drew ticket number D90 which was heldby Terry. Pam then presented the 14 remaining cardsto Terry and he successfully picked the Joker. ToTerrys delight, but much to the dismay of othermembers who were hoping for new shoes. The ActingTreasurer has advised that Terry will be receiving $xxxas his prize.

Although consideration was given to calling in ASADA for a full enquiryinto joker fixing and use of mind enhancing x -ray vision drugs, it wasdecided we should not wait for 2 years for the result, and that if Terryprovides wine for next weeks meeting he can keep his prize !!

So a new pack of cards will be in play next week and back to 1 in 52chances of the Joker to be drawn by the winning ticket holder.

Terry contemplating if he mightwin the Joker after dinner?

    SGT Fines:

This week Glenda stepped up as the Fines Master and ably extracted $38.30 from those inattendance. Particularly vulnerable on the night was Terry, who arrived late from abusiness meeting in a suit and tie, and without a badge which he misplaced at thechangeover. That was about four fines just for Terry. Having just won the joker, he was

however well placed to pay up.

    Attendance:

Stand in attendance officer Mez, reported that 15 members were in attendance, plusHon Member Alex, Supporter Vera and soon to be member Marie -Claire who althoughsick with the flu, dragged herself from her sickbed to pay for her meal and give lateapologies. Mez calculated that with the LoAs for members overseas and make-ups, theattendance figure for the night was probably around 80%. However she felt thatdiscretion should allow the inclusion of several meetings during the week on Rotarybusiness, by Board and Committee members. As such with some creative accounting

Mez raised the final attendance figure to 95%. In response President Paul once again offered Port and Baileysfor the enjoyment of all at the end of the meeting.

Meeting 800 Closed at 8.05pm followed by fellowship and consumption of the Presidents Port/Baileys.

Weekly Market Report 12 July 2014

This weeks report submitted by Chris Hunter

It was a very cold and very windy day at the markets. Drivers wereerratic and obviously believe that no exit means please enter. Many a driver claimed they let me last week. Chris advised that she

came close to screaming if she had heard the excuse many more times. Other than the drivers, everything elsewas good, although crowds were down a bit, as reflected in the takings. The most commonly asked question atthe front of house was where are the ATMs?. [Remember the advice from last weeks Jerraganda that theATMs were permanently relocated as from this week in an attempt to improve patron flow through themarket].

    OUR HISTORY

In 1998 the Rotary Clubs of Queanbeyan and Queanbeyan West Rotary decided to sponsor a new RotaryClub based in Jerrabomberra. Bill Lilley, John Snedden and Peter Jarvis from Queanbeyan West took on the joint roll of mentoring the development of the new club. (Peter Jarvis went on to become our Charter

    President).

Advertising for potential members began in March 1998. After a successful campaign, the Club waschartered on 18 November 1998 with 26 members.

Initial meetings were held at the Jerrabomberra General Store the venue was very good until we grew innumbers. We then moved to the Jerrabomberra Community Centre for a few years, and we now meet atthe Jerrabomberra Public School Staff Room, on Thursdays (6.15 for 6.30 pm).

(Charter) President Peter Jarvis ran competitions to select a name for our Club Newsletter and a design forthe Club banner. There were some good and some not so good suggestions. Pam Spencer suggested thewinning bulletin name Jerraganda and David Stevens was the successful desig ner of our club banner. Thedesign incorporated a goose and the windmill associated with the original entrance to the estate adjacent

    to the Community Centre.

We continue to be a vibrant and fun loving club providing valued community service, both locally andinternationally. Our motto is Doing Good and Having Fun

Dont forget to let the editor know if you have anyconstructive suggestions for the enhancement of the

    Jerraganda.

    A final thought
