Sharing by Mr Kelvin Ng, MILT
In September 2015, I travelled to Dubai to join the CILT International Convention for the CILT international Young Achiever Award competition. This city really impressed me a lot with their slogan “Bigger and Better”. They have the tallest building in the world (Burj Khalīfa Tower), the largest shopping mall in the world (Dubai Mall), the world's largest choreographed fountain system (The Dubai Fountain)……
I arrived at Dubai a day before the convention started, which allowed me to have some time to explore this famous city. I went to the world’s biggest mall “Dubai Mall” and found out that the mall was much bigger than I thought as I really got lost in the mall! And as a member of the CILT, of course I would take the chance to experience the public transport system. I took the Dubai metro system and it did impress me with its modern design and convenience. In the convention, although I only got the award of “Highly Commented” in the International Young Achiever Award competition, I had already learned a lot in the Convention especially in the YP conference which I could apply at my own company.
During the YP conference, all the YPs were assigned in dierent teams and worked together for an interesting project. It did provide me a valuable chance to know more about dierent young professionals from dierent countries. We came up with a lot of creative ideas within our discussion.
After the group discussion, we also had a chance to visit Emirates Training Center for their crew training. Emirates had invested a lot in their training facilities in order to maintain their high service standard, every sta member would need to go through an 8-week training before they could serve guests. It really showed me what is the important of training; they even built a room only for the door opening training! The things that I have learned in this visit really can be applied in my daily job. Like for training, I will review the training process in my department and add more practical and on-job trainings in order to let our new sta have more “real” experience.
To sum up, I have really learned a lot in this convention and it provided me a chance to have a much in-depth understanding of the operation of the CILT International. I am looking forward to joining more programmes held by CILT in the future!
On the rst day of the convention, the Women in Logistics and Transport (WiLAT) Conference was held on the themes: Mentoring, Empowerment, Leadership and Entrepreneurship. Running parallel was the Young Professionals Conference when professional speakers and specialist consultants were invited giving sharing and advices were also extended to teams of young professionals as they competed in interactive logistical challenges.
The nal programme of the four day Convention was a technical visit to the award winning Jebel Ali Port, Dubai. The port is the largest marine terminal in the Middle East and the agship facility of DP World’s award winning portfolio of over 65 marine terminals.
A big thank to Mr Keith Newton, Secretary General, Miss Hanna Lucas, Executive Ocer of CILT Australia, and the Secretariat of CILT International for all their hard work to deliver this wonderful Convention.
