The Victoria Harbour Celebration Society invites you to CELEBRATE OUR HARBOUR - June 17, 2012

On Sunday, June 17th 2012, from 11 am until 4 pm, the Victoria Harbour Celebration Society will present the second annual Celebrate Our Harbour Day to encourage Victoria residents and visitors to experience the unique character, history, industry and beauty of our Harbour. This is a fun-fi lled afternoon of family activities on Songhees and Ship Point, traditional territory of the Coast Salish Peoples, and on the waters of Victoria’s picturesque Inner Harbour.

For a full day, the society is showcasing paddle boat races, historical tours, working harbour activities, Maritime entertainment performances, sand sculptures, kayaking and rowing activities, a pirate school and many more activities. There is sure to be something inspirational for attendees of all ages to celebrate. So, grab your sunscreen, a pair of shades, and maybe even a hat, and we’ll see you on the shore!

Here’s a snapshot of some of the activities offered this year:

The Harbour RaceThis recreational race for human powered watercraft, organized by the Ocean River Paddling Club (ORPC) was a popular activity in 2011. This year is another afternoon of racing fun. The race is open to outrigger canoes, surf skis, kayaks, dragon boats, stand up paddleboards and rowboats. The route starts at the inside of Songhees Point, by the Delta Ocean Pointe Hotel. Racers will make their way along the 3 km course, round the pilings in West Bay and return cheered on by the spectators on the Songhees walkway.

Historical/Naturalist Tours of the HarbourThe Harbour and downtown Victoria provide a rich source for historical stories of Victoria’s Waterfront, including those of the First Nations, the Gold Rush of 1858, and other exciting events in Victoria’s past. It also has a vibrant natural history. Join local
