DayFATHER’S DAY ……. A SPECIAL DAY FOR DAD

A father can be defi ned by many adjectives …… a teacher, an inspiration, a healer, a mentor, and a hero. He’s a pat on the back, whether you suc-ceed or fail, a loving presence to the entire family, a shoulder for your tears, and a warm hug just for being your dad. He’s a friend when someone turns against you, a side-kick to go fi shing with, and a coach and supporter for you athletic teams. He’s your “best friend”! The biggest “thank you” a fa-ther could ever receive is two arms thrown around his neck from his young child, a fi rm hand shake from his appreciative grown son, or a hug and kiss on his cheek from his adoring, beautiful daughter. Father’s Day is a wonderful festival that acknowl-edges, and appreciates, the important role played by a father in helping raise children, and conse-quently building a strong person to help create a bett er society. It is a celebration honoring fathers and fatherhood, parental bonds, and the infl uence of in the early 20th century to compliment Moth-er’s Day. A loving daughter, Sonora Louise Smart Dodd from Spokane, Washington is recognized as the founder of this wonderful holiday.

As we finish out another school year, I want to take this

opportunity to thank all of our teachers, administrators, parent volunteers, students and our educational advisory board for another successful academic year. Over the last few weeks, I attended a lot of different educational events and it is clear that there is so much pride in our area schools, and rightfully so! It is unbelievable how many National Merit Scholarship winners we have! Our students are truly excelling in the classroom, with the arts and on the fields! I am bumping into so many people throughout town, with kids getting ready to head off to great colleges throughout the County, good luck to all.

The Parkland City Commission and City staff again held its strategic planning session. It was really great to get some new ideas and new perspectives. I want to thank all of the members of the City Commission and City Staff for their help in making our strategic planning session a huge

success. Parkland residents are extremely happy with the quality and level of services being provided by the City. The City strives each day to make sure the service level is high and the costs of those services are reasonable. The second main theme running through the surveys is that the top issues for our residents are: taxes, schools and public safety. These issues fit directly into our top goals of strategic planning. They are ‘Financially Sound City Government’ and ‘Public Schools of Excellence’. From a public safety point of view, we are looking at different staffing alternatives to provide additional police services throughout our communities. We continue to look at the Library and capital improvements throughout the City as well. On the City level, we try to do whatever we can to make sure that these issues are addressed.

The month of June brings us to Father’s Day. I have a lot of jobs and responsibilities, but the best one is being a Dad to my three kids. I also have

a great Dad! I wish all the Dads a great Father’s Day! I hope everyone has a safe and relaxing summer… Don’t worry, before you know it you’ll be back on the fields and running carpools and errands. Enjoy!

Hurricane season is here again and while we’ve been lucky the past 9 years,

it’s important for our residents to be prepared. Our Under the Sun magazine is a great source of information and it includes a

summary of all the City can do for you before, during and after a hurricane. In the event of a hurricane, residents can reach the City’s call center at 954-344-1001. You can also log onto CoralSprings.org/hurricane or watch CityTV, Channel 25 on Advanced Cable and Channel 99 on U-Verse, for updates. Coral Springs residents can also tune their radio dials to AM 1670. CityRadio delivers information about City services, upcoming events, weather updates, and emergency bulletins when necessary.

On another note, if you haven’t stopped by the Coral Springs Mega Green Market, check it out every Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market is located at Downtown Coral Springs, just west of University Drive on Sample Road. There is fresh produce, vegan products and much more!

Join me and the City Commission on Saturday, June 14 as we celebrate Flag Day at 10 a.m. at the Veterans Park. This traditional Flag Day ceremony will include the ceremonial retirement and burning of frayed, tattered or faded fl ags. Residents may drop off any fl ags they want to be retired at City Hall or the Coral Springs Gymnasium, 2501 Coral Springs Drive. For more information, call 954-345-2200. The park is located at 8601 Royal Palm Blvd.

The City’s Fourth of July celebration will once again be held in Mullins Park. Join us for an evening of dazzling fi reworks and entertainment for the entire family. Residents are encouraged to come out and celebrate on Friday, July 4. Starting at 6 p.m., families are invited to come and enjoy games, bounce houses, food and entertainment. The fi reworks display will begin promptly at 9 p.m. The event is free, but there will be fees for food, bounce houses and games. Parking will be available for a $3 fee at the Coral Springs Gymnasium for early arrivers, and also at the main Mullins Park/Center for the Arts parking lot. No pets or alcoholic

beverages are allowed in the park. Personal fi reworks will be confi scated by Coral Springs Police. Mullins Park is located at 10150 Ben Geiger Dr. For more information, call 954-345-2200.

Now that summer is here and children are playing outdoors, it is critical that they have water-safety skills that could save their lives. Make sure to take advantage of the many drowning prevention and learn-to-

The Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce recently held its annual “Coral Springs Chamber Busi-ness Awards Gala” presented by Joe DiMaggio

Children’s Hospital. This spectacular event was held at the Parkland Golf and Country Club.

The Business Awards Gala has restructured the award categories. They are as follows: Small Business

Leader of the Year, and the Covered Bridge Award. All other awards will be given out at the Chamber’s second big event, Oktoberfeast. The award recipients

This year, the Coral Springs Chamber made a few changes to its annual gala and added a Casino Night por-tion. This exciting Casino Night event was made possible through the assistance of several major sponsors- The Ace of Diamonds: Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital; High Roller Sponsor: Kraeer Funeral Home; King of Diamonds: Al Hendrickson Toyota and City of Coral Springs. The

booth where guests took pictures to commemorate their evening. Guests were able to play games by using funny money acquired by making a donation to the Education

part of the Gala was recognizing and honoring the graduates of the Coral Springs Cham-ber Leadership Institute Class of 2014. These participants demonstrated their commitment to grow and be amongst the top leaders in the City and Chamber. It has been quite an experience and I know that they made friendships and business connections that will last forever. This leadership class also raised money for the Coral Springs Cham-ber Education Foundation. Through the efforts of the

Coral Springs Chamber Leadership Class, the Ambassadors and the Edu-cation Com-mittee working together the Chamber’s Education Foundation is

providing over $10,000 to the fi ve area high schools this year to assist future business leaders in DECA and BPA.

Coral Springs ranked as Best Place to Live in Florida

Movoto Real Estate, a real estate research blog, pub-lished a ranking of the 10 Best Places to Live in

Florida and Coral Springs came in fi rst place. Movoto started with Florida’s largest cities in terms of

A FANTASTIC YEAR AT PARK TRAILS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The 2013-2014 school year has been a great year all around for our students, teachers, administrators and our entire Park Trails

Elementary School family. Our school year ends with our last day of school on Thursday, June 5th, which is an Early Release Day. On Friday, June 6th, there is an Employee Planning Day.

As we say hello to summer, we’d like to thank the entire Park Trails Elementary family for their continued support. Park Trails wishes our fi fth grade students well as they enter middle school and look forward to another great school year ahead.

Looking back on this school year, Park Trails Elementary has had many school-wide achievements and the students have accomplished much in academics and beyond.

The school community has also hosted many events and fundraisers to improve and help our school and students. Our Park Trails family recently held Run for Recess, which was a fun evening raising money to add new playground equipment, refurbish and replace existing pieces, and remove the sand and replace it with a rubber surface, making it accessible to every child. This was a well attended and great event for our school.

One of our most popular events, the Annual Cultural Arts Night, continued to be a huge success. There were musical performances, along with amazing works of art created by the students, and many more activities. A special thank you to everyone involved in our events throughout the school year.

We wish all of our returning, new and former students a safe, fun and happy summer!


Writing Well WorkshopStudents need to learn to communicate effectively

with others, not only through oral language, but through written language as well.

Teaching writing to students enhances speaking, reading and critical thinking skills.

Because of the importance of learning to write effectively, The Reading and Learning Clinic of Coral Springs is offering a two-week writing workshop from July 7 through July 18.

The class will meet Monday through Friday from 4:00 to 5:30 pm. It is intended for students entering grades 4 through 10.

Only ten students per group will have the opportunity to benefi t from this unique workshop.

The program focuses on teaching students how to better their writing skills through prewriting strategies, prompts, organizational patterns, proper grammar,a variety of sentence structures and correct punctuation.

Math Mysteries SolvedIs your child struggling in the area of Mathematics?

If so, The Reading and Learning Clinic of Coral Springs is offering a summer Math Workshop to build a more solid foundation in computational skills, basic number concepts, and problem solving strategies.

The primary purpose of the class is to determine specifi c areas in which each student is having diffi culty. Once these problems have been identifi ed, students can be given the help that will enable them to make satisfactory progress in the mathematical sequence.

The class is intended for grades 2 through 10. Emphasis is also placed on the new Mafs Test and test-taking strategies.

The Math program will run from July 7 through July 18. Classes will be held from (5:30 to 7:00) PM.

Attention High School Students!“Beat the SAT”

The Reading and Learning Clinic of Coral Springs, Inc. will be holding its summer SAT preparation class beginning Monday and Wednesday, July 28 and July 30. The summer program will consist of four weeks of instruction. This course will prepare high schoolstudents for the October and November testing dates. Our Mission is to bring high-quality and affordable test preparation for the S.A.T.

The Students will meet every Monday and Wednesday evening from 5:30-7:30 pm. One hour of instruction will be conducted by a certifi ed math teacher with experience in SAT preparation, and the second hour will be taught by an English teacher familiar with the verbal requirements. Classes will be limited to 10-12 students.

The Reading and Learning Clinic provides excellence in educational programs. Parents can be assured that this class provides a solid preparation for the SAT exam.

Created in 1964, the U.S. Presidenti al Scholars Program has honored more than 6,500 of the nati on’s top-perform-ing students with the presti gious award given to honorees during the annual ceremony in D.C. The program was ex-panded in 1979 to recognize students who demonstrate excepti onal talent in the visual, literary and performing arts.

The 2014 ceremony will be held in

June, when each honoree will receive a Presidenti al Scholar Medallion. Con-nor, who is part of the 50th class of U.S. Presidenti al Scholars, will showcase his accomplishments in dance at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and at The Smithsonian Insti tute in Washington, DC, on June 23 and 24.

Vadim and Karla Boldirev, a husband and wife dance team, is truly off the charts

when it comes to displaying their expertise. This uniquely talented couple glides across the dance fl oor with grace and el-egance, whether in competition, or giving lessons. Most dancers start at an early age, and this fl amboyant team is no exception.

Karla began her career at the ten-der age of 3 in her native country of Mexico. She holds a Dance Major as well as a Master’s De-gree in both Choreography and Production. Vadim began danc-ing in his homeland of Azer-baijan Republic at 14. He was Champion of the Capital, and of the Republic, for two consecu-tive years. This amazing couple, from diff erent countries, were born to be together, and destined to become champions. The rest, as they say, is history.

can Smooth Champions. That alone looks wonderful in any-one’s resume. But it certainly does not stop there. The couple is also 3-Time Closed American Rhythm Champions, 2-Time Open American Smooth Cham-pions, and also placed with a Silver and Bronze Medal in American Smooth at various Regional, Inter-Regional, and National Championships! At the Fred Astaire World Champion-ships, the couple placed in both Rising Stars American Smooth and Closed American Smooth competition. The couple’s next competition is scheduled one June 8th at Heron Bay. Doors open at 5:30 PM and the “Best of Summer” show begins at 6:00 PM. Following the competition,

Committee. She has worked tirelessly and selfl essly to develop their program for the MLK weekend celebration and also devotes her time to the MLK Golf Tournament. She is commended for her volunteer spirit, hard work and dedication.

During National Volunteer Week, the Coral Springs City Commission honored this group of volunteers by awarding them the “Lynne Johnson Award”. These awards were named after Lynne Johnson in 2009 in memory of her dedicated volunteer service to the City of Coral Springs.

For the “Seniors Making a Difference” category, the Commission recognized Gerald Fasman. He has been a volunteer since 2003 and devotes approximately 80 hours per month to the Police Department, providing assistance to the Fleet and Facilities Division and Parking Enforcement.

For the “Youth Making a Difference” category, the Commission recognized Tyler Horn. He is a senior at Coral Springs High School and has been volunteering for the past four years in various projects, including

Columbia College Chicago recently recognized Kayla Castellon, a Dance major from Parkland, on being named to the Dean’s List for the fall semester 2013.

To to be named to the Dean’s List at Columbia College Chicago, students must have taken at least 12 credit hours and have a 3.75 grade point average or above for that semester.

All good things have to end, so we have our last week of school this month.

The last day of school at Heron Heights Elementary School in Parkland is on June 5 with an early release that day. Our end of year parties are on June 3rd and June 4th.

Another great school year comes to an end. It is sad to leave so many things behind, but also exciting to think about a fun-fi lled summer. We had great events and support this year, but we know we will have an even better year next year!

Chances are that when you’re stopped at a red light and there’s a Toyota in front of you, Al Hen-drickson’s name is on it. For 50

years, this giant in the automotive indus-try has left a permanent imprint on not just his dealership, but auto sales throughout South Florida in general. Let’s turn back the clock to the New York World’s Fair ……. the year is 1964 and Ford is about to introduce the Mustang. Also at the Fair, a 26 year-old talented in-dividual named Al Hendrickson, is stand-ing on a display table unveiling the new Pontiac Le Mans with a GTO option. Out of 3,000 applicants for this position, Al is selected as one of only 10 sales people to represent Pontiac. At this early age, he demonstrates his keen sense of reaching people and how to sell cars. By the end of that fi rst year, Hendrickson sells more than 300 vehicles. Out of 60 individuals recruited by General Motors, he becomes the top salesman and solidifi es his posi-tion as a “rising star in the industry”.

Even today, in his 70’s, Hendrickson does what he does best. Instead of slowing down after 50 years, he greets each new day with the enthusiasm and love for his work that has transformed this man into a

legend and icon. Every morning you can locate him at the dealership before 8:00 AM making his rounds at Al Hendrickson Toyota in Coconut Creek, speaking to his sales team, and answering questions that his customers may have. The “hands on” approach has always separated Al from his competitors. “As long as I can move, I’ll be doing this”, Al said. “To me, the most exciting thing in the world is the automobile business and being able to do what you love”, he added.

From humble beginnings growing up in Northern Michigan, Al dropped out of school at 16, joined the Navy, and armed with his GED, ended up graduating from college. During his fantastic career, Al has worked for General Motors, and had the honor of standing next to the legend-

ary Jim Moran as he built up Southeast Toyota Distributors and the Deerfi eld Beach based JM Family Enterprises. The two gentlemen became friends, and in 1971 Hendrickson joined Moran’s com-pany serving as Sales Training Manager for Toyota sales. Over the next 17 years, Al worked his way up in JM Family Enter-prises and became Group Vice President-Automotive.

Seeing an opportunity to open a new store and work with his son, Hendrickson leaped at the opportunity, while remain-ing in the industry. New challenges and a bright future for him and Al, Jr. were on the horizon.

There isn’t much more that can be said about this remarkably knowledgeable, caring, and kind individual that hasn’t been said. His mannerisms and honesty defi ne not only himself, but everyone that works for the dealership.

Five minutes. That is about how long it took to throw everything I thought I knew

about hybrid-powered cars with CVT transmissions out the win-dow.

Although there are a few hybrids about to hit the market like BMW’s i8, Porsche’s 918, and McLaren’s P1 that will completely redefine the concept, my long standing impression is that manu-facturers have strived to attain excellent fuel economy while al-lowing performance, and in many cases aesthetics, to be placed on the back burner.

Granted my experience with hybrids has been limited to test-drives, I did own a compact SUV that employed a buzzy, whiney, awkward “shifting”, prone to failure and expensive to replace CVT transmission to send power to the front wheels. My fingers-crossed experience with that truck had me swear off purchasing another vehicle with a CVT. In a taxonomy of “cars to own some-day,” a hybrid-powered CVT equipped sedan would fall some-where between the Yugo GVC and a rusty Cadillac Cimarron. Five minutes behind the wheel of

the 338 horsepower, 31 combined mpg (29 city/34 highway), 2014 Lexus GS450h had me rethinking the list.

The 2014 Lexus GS450h combines the world’s first direct-injected Atkinson-cycle 3.5 Liter Four Cam 24-Valve V-6 engine and dual hybrid-motor system with a silky smooth Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT), allowing the car to reach 60 mph in only 5.6 seconds. Even more amazing than the acceleration is the civilized manner in which it does it.

The GS450h is so refined that even my lead foot and Sport + mode driving hardly coaxed a complaint from my normally vocal passengers. Even when driven fast, accelerating quickly, and turning sharply, the Adap-tive Variable Suspension (AVS) helped keep the Lexus poised, retaining complete composure. Over the week that I reviewed the GS450h the most popular response from the backseat was, “Dad, this car is so smooth.” And believe me, that is amazing.

The exterior styling of the

Lexus GS series is, to me any-ways, a wonderful combination of luxury and sport. The rich “Starfire Pearl” paint has a soft sparkle in direct sunlight and comes to life under the glow of the lamps in dimly lit parking garage. The 19” 9-spoke alloy wheels complement the paint color and are just the right diam-eter for the dimensions of the car. The aggressive front fascia houses the LED headlamps with pop-up washers, LED daytime running lamps and a dynamic auto-level-ing system that adds a nice level of visibility during evening rides.

Starting the 2014 Lexus GS450h is almost as entertaining as driving the car. The push but-ton start begins an elaborate se-quence of movements and system checks. The heated and ventilated 10 way adjustable perforated leather power front seats return to the position where you last set them and the bamboo and leather wrapped heated steering wheel lowers itself into a comfortable driving position. The 12.3-inch high-resolution screen that proj-ects the backup camera images and navigation/entertainment system comes to life, eventually settling on your favorite pre-set combination of navigation, audio, and systems information. On the outside of the car, the LED head-lamps run through an adjustment start-up progression that, when projected on my garage door, re-minded me of an orchestra direc-tor, waving the baton in prepara-tion of a symphonic piece.

The week that I was review-ing the 2014 Lexus GS450h coin-cided with my children’s spring

break. For a few months, we had been planning a trip from Jacksonville to Cape Canaveral, Florida to visit the Kennedy Space Center. And although the Lexus is great around town, whether I was picking up the kids from school, driving the family to church, or getting groceries, it was during the 300 mile round trip that the Lexus really shined.

The 2014 Lexus GS450h loves the highway. The heads up dis-play projects pertinent informa-tion on the windshield, allowing your eyes to stay fixed on the road. I appreciated the way the display interacted with the cars navigation system, projecting turn-by-turn information on the windshield. In combination with the buttons on the steering wheel, rarely an instance requires the driver to take their eyes off the road. The blind spot monitors and

It’s not a secret that children love both music and dance; after all, it goes hand-

in-hand. Teaching for 21 years, and my passion and instruction in dancing and Latin music, inspired me to bring that exciting rhythm into our classroom. When I introduced this to my students at Royal Palm Christian Preschool in Coral Springs, their little bodies were going in all different directions. I started off teaching them the basic Salsa steps-- forward, backwards, and side to side. Then, we added movement to their arms, hips, and legs. We stopped after fi fteen minutes of fun, and their hearts were pumping so fast that they were then happy and ready to sit down and start the day.

Now, every morning when the children arrive, we join together for our “Music and Movement” session. The music starts, they listen to the beat, the feet start moving, and each child’s creativity fl ows to the rhythm. Our daily “dance party” is nothing more than an organized fun aerobic

workout with a Salsa beat! The children take turns showing their own dance steps to us as we follow their moves. Sometimes

we’ll use colorful scarves and ribbons and their favorite is when we incorporate musical instruments. They play maracas, tambourines, rhythm sticks, shakers, fi nger cymbals and castanets. Some days we take our talents outside to feel, hear and dance to the music on different surfaces such as grass, concrete, and mulch.

Their feet glide over the ground and under the bright sun. Their faces light up and their laughter is contagious. The children can’t get enough of their very active, early morning workout.

We are always looking to fi nd new ways to instill a daily routine of exercise that

is fun and exciting for the children. Our goal is, that in doing so, they will learn a love of dance and music and a habit of physical fi tness that will keep them happy and healthy for a lifetime!

Every young high school athlete dreams about winning a State Championship. But, winning

back-to-back titles are what dreams are made of. The “Lady” Raiders won their second straight Class 7A State Cham-pionship on May 10th in Vero Beach at Historic Dodgertown, behind the stellar pitching of senior Meghan King, and an RBI single in the fi rst inning by Rachel Collins. King gave up an innocent single to Harmony lead-off hitt er Lily Mann in the fi rst inning, while striking out 12 batt ers, and completely shut them down the rest of the way. The lone run stood for the seven inning encounter, and the St. Thomas Raiders softball team hoisted their straight champion-ship trophy. Last season St. Thomas de-feated Harmony by the same 1-0 score, except it took 9 innings to do it. Ironi-cally, Collins also drove in the deciding run in last year’s game.

In the fi rst inning, St. Thomas’ Brianna Stella led off the game by walking. She immediately stole second, and darted home easily ahead of the throw, after Collins drilled opposing pitcher Aleshia Ocasio’s off ering to right fi eld for a sin-gle. “I know King said that once we got that run she didn’t feel like it was over, but I know how she works and I knew it was over at that point”, St. Thomas catcher Gwen Svekis said. “Meghan is very good under pressure, probably the best pitcher I’ve ever seen. Once we got that run, in my head, it was over”, she added. King, a University of Mary-

land signee said, “They’re our hardest competition out there. I wouldn’t have wanted to play any other team for the State Championship”. The Raiders com-pleted their championship season with a 30-2 record, while Harmony fi nished at 28-3. It was a shame either team had to lose in this wonderfully play game by two schools with winning traditions. Congratulations to the Lady Raiders!

Twins Maria and Carmen Suarez were born in Ecuador with the same passions ….. dancing and gymnastics! As young

teenagers, they were both on the Ecuadorian National Gymnastics Team and placed fi rst in the South American Championships. The ideals and beliefs these two young ladies held close, are the same that are taught to their young pupils at Twins Gymnastics. Recently, Twins Gymnastics placed fi rst in both the AAU Level 1, and the AAU Level 2 competition at the Coral Reef Invite. Summer is here! Our 2013-2014 school year is complete and it has

been a fantastic year at Riverglades Elementary. Riverglades wants to thank our staff, families, PTA, and

community for all their continued support throughout the year – we couldn’t have done it without you.

We had a busy year with fi eld trips, providing cultural activities and author visits, hosting Math Night, Bingo and Movie Nights (this list goes on……), fundraising, outreaching to our community with donations, and building resources for our kids to build a better future.

As new students come in to our school and some of ours move on… we are excited for what the upcoming year brings. With new adventures and lots of learning to do, we have lots of planning to do. But now that it’s summer, it is time to relax a little and let our hard working students unwind and get ready for their next adventure – 2014-2015 class year.

The good news is that after a quarter of the 2014 base-ball season is in the books, the Miami Marlins are in the thick of the NL East race sitt ing only 2 games behind the leading Atlanta Braves with a 21-20 record The bad news is that the team will have to fi nish the campaign without “ace” Jose Fernandez. With “Tommy John” surgery a likely scenario for the All-Star hurler, the Marlins signed left-hander Randy Wolf from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Anthony DeSclafani, a 24 year-old right-hander and the Marlins’ No. 6 prospect, was brought up from Double-A Jacksonville, and started the game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on May 14th. All this rookie did in his debut was to go six in-nings, allowing just 2 runs, while striking out 7, in a 13-3 Marlins victory. Wolf got the save, throwing 3 innings of relief, and striking out 3. Of DeSclafani’s 93 pitches, 66 were strikes. Being in the right place at the right time plays a large part in a young players’ path to the majors, but in this case, so does talent. Oh, by the way, he also knocked in two runs. Not a bad major league debut!

Giancarlo Stanton continues his assault on opposing pitchers. After 41 games, Stanton is hitt ing at a .325 clip, placing him in the National League’s top ten, along with a league-tying 11 Home Runs and a league-leading 42 RBI’s. It seems the only park that is safe to pitch to him in without gett ing “torched” is Yellowstone National Park ...it’s probably the only park he can’t hit one out of.

Outfi elder Reed Johnson is hitt ing .340 in only fi fty plate appearances. Additionally, third baseman Casey McGe-hee, second on the team with 44 hits and 25 RBI’s, has slapped the ball all over the place for a very respectable .289 average. Outfi elder Christian Yelich is having a

strong season carrying a .273 batt ing average banging out 42 hits. Adeiny Hechavarria is close behind with a .272 average.

A.J. Ramos has amassed a 3-0 record from the bull pen, while compiling a microscopic 1.59 ERA in 18 games. During these games, Ramos has given up only 11 hits, while striking out 21 opposing batt ers in 17 innings. Steve

Cishek, another one of the many talented re-lievers, has posted a 3-1 record with a 2.25 ERA. Chisek has whiff ed 19 hitt ers in 16 in-nings.

Manager Mike Redmond has done an out-standing job molding this Marlin team into a possible contender for the NL East crown. It’s a “crap shoot” when rookies are called up to the majors, especially from Double A, and a gamble when you acquire someone, but early indications after one game are

quite positive. So much in fact that Redmond has named DeSclafani to take over Fernandez’ place in the starting rotation. Seven Marlin starters, or relievers, have an ERA of less than 3.00, a fact that surely must bring a smile to pitching coaches’ Chuck Hernandez face. For a young man that was in Jacksonville just a few days earlier, a well-earned lifelong dream has come true for Anthony DeSclafani.

With a formidable schedule of games at the end of May against Divisional opponents Philadelphia, Washing-ton and Atlanta, the Marlins can take a huge step early in the year as a force to be reckoned with. Combining great starting and relief pitching, along with a line-up that’s scoring runs, will defi nitely convert into wins for the fi sh. The coaching staff feels that the team can win and the players KNOW it !

This year, Mary Help of Christians Catholic School in Parkland had 22 seventh-grade students who qualifi ed to participate in the highly-selective Duke University Talent Identifi cation Program.

In order to be eligible, the student must score in the 95th percentile or higher in a qualifying section of the Iowa Test. Out of the seven students who took the ACT or SAT, three students qualifi ed for state recognition, meaning

SECURITY OFFICER CAREER

There are many misconceptions about security offi cers and what roles they play in society.

Many feel security is a meaningless job and security offi cers are want-to-be cops or someone who lacks the skills to do some-thing else. Truth is, to become a Florida state licensed security offi cer

you must attend a state certifi ed school, complete 40 hours of classroom training and pass a written test with a score better than 70%; while some schools require an 85% or better to pass. After passing the test and receiving a certifi cate, fi ngerprints are sent to the FDLE and FBI for a full background check, only after this has been completed and approved are you permitted to work as a security offi cer. Thereafter, they are required to renew their license every 2 years with the State of Florida.

There are several types of security offi cers and du-ties for which they are hired. Unarmed offi cers, which do not carry fi rearms, are the most popular. These are offi cers that are usually hired for gated communities, roving patrols and condominium lobbies. Depending on the property, they are mostly required to stop and identify guests entering the property to ensure they are expected. Essentially you have a security offi cer to regulate traffi c entering the community. Security of-fi cers that carry fi rearms are considered “armed” and you will most likely fi nd them in banks, stores, high crime areas and events.

Security is an integral part of the country’s workforce with over 1 million employed by contract companies in the United States. Currently, there are only a little over 700,000 sworn police offi cers. As a contract agency, I can say we work closely with several police agencies to help with investigations whenever possible, mostly by our video surveillance systems we install in our gatehouses. We have successfully aided the police on several occasions with information that resulted in an apprehension of criminals. Security is a position that is often used as a stepping stone to further one’s career in Law Enforcement. Being a security offi cer allows the person to understand how to deal with people and have fi rst-hand experience with different situations, which may prepare them for law enforce-ment. Security personnel often are exposed to physical and psychological trauma that can have lasting effects. This has always been an issue, but todays more violent and angry culture combined with drug and alcohol-related violence results in more instances of security personnel being physically or verbally abused, and sometimes by the people that hire them. Despite this, we have had many of our security offi cers go onto successful careers with the Broward Sheriff’s Offi ce, Police Departments, Federal Corrections and County Corrections Offi cers.

Many security offi cers take their job serious and have been accredited with saving lives.

Derrick Brun, an unarmed security guard employed by the Red Lake School District in Minnesota, was praised for his heroic role in protect-

ing children during the 2005 Red Lake High School Massacre. Derrick’s bravery cost him his life.

Richard Jewell, a security guard at Atlanta, Georgia’s Centennial Olympic Park during the 1996 Summer Olympics, saved hundreds of lives when he fi rst noticed the suspicious package and got the area evacuated.

The lymphatic system is an extensive network of fi lters that work to rid bodies of any harmful substances. Many of these substances are irritants that trigger the itch response.

Toxins can also impair our ability to balance the body. Mineral defi ciency is often caused by toxins replacing naturally needed nutrients. For example, what is dry skin? It is a condition where the cells are dying at an unhealthy accelerated rate. This is the result of toxins actually killing the cells and blocking the nutrients needed to generate new cells.
