ORVIETO ED IL DUOMO

L’ispirazione di edificare un’opera così importante nacque attraverso il mira-colo del corpus Domini in quanto si volle realizzare una grandiosa teca che tramandasse nel tempo questo segno divino. Il 13 novembre del 1290 si posela prima pietra della più importante avventura spirituale, culturaleed economica che la città abbia mai intrapreso.

L’opera fu progettata e diretta inizialmente dall’architetto e scultore Lorenzo Maitani (1275-1330) ed aveva come obiettivo anche quello di suggellare la fama di un ambizioso Comune i cui confini si estendevano dal Monte Amiata al mar Tirreno. Per la sua costruzione occorsero tre secoli (dal 1290 al 1607)e vennero impegnati circa 2.500 maestranze e più di 150 tra artigiani ed artisti e nemmeno le lotte intestine al comune oppure la terribile peste del 1348impedirono agli orvietani di portare a termine quella che doveva essere“una delle più belle opere al mondo”.

Oltre a Lorenzo Maitani, il progetto per la prima realizzazione porta i nomi anche di Arnolfo di Cambio, Fra’ Bevignate e Giovanni Uguccione.Il grandioso edificio avviato in forme romaniche, presentava una pianta basilicale a tre navate e un’abside semicircolare, numerosi furono in seguito i mutamenti, soprattutto quelli riguardanti la facciata, documentabili,grazie ad alcuni progetti su pergamena tuttora conservati nel palazzodell’Opera del Duomo e considerati tra i più antichi progetti nella storia dell’architettura.

La maestosa facciata è un insieme senza precedenti di architettura, scultura e mosaico dello stile gotico italiano che si fonde con quello romanico ebizantino. Le sculture e i mosaici sono posti secondo un criterio di lettura biblica in cui sono rappresentati i principali eventi dell’Antico eNuovo Testamento.Alta 52 metri e larga 40.

ORVIETO AND THE CATHEDRAL

The building of such a monumental cathedral was inspired by the miracleof Corpus Domini, and a great shrine was created to commemoratethis divine event. On 13th November 1290, the first stone was laid, marking the beginning of the most important spiritual, cultural and economic adventu-re the city had ever undertaken.

The work of art was designed and initially directed by the architect and sculp-tor, Lorenzo Maitani (1275 - 1330), and also aimed at promoting the fame of an ambitious municipality whose boundaries extended from Mount Amiata to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The construction of the cathedral took three centuries (from 1290 to 1607) and about 2.500 workers and more than 150 artisans and artists were employed in the process. Nothing prevented the townsmen from completing what was supposed to be one of the most beautiful works of art in the world, not even local feuds or the terrible plague of 1348.

In addition to Lorenzo Maitani, Arnolfo di Cambio, Fra Bevignate andGiovanni Uguccione also worked on the first part of the project. The impressive building started with a Romanesque form, a basilica design with three naves and a semicircular apse. Numerous changes, especially tothe facade were documented thanks to some projects on parchment stillpreserved in the Opera del Duomo and are considered among the mostancient projects in the history of architecture.

The majestic facade, is an unprecedented combination of architecture, sculp-ture and mosaics of Italian Gothic style, blending with Romanesque and Byzantine. The sculptures and mosaics are positioned according to a criterion of bible readings, in which the main events of the Old and New Testament are represented.52 metres high and 40 wide.

Nella solenne porta centrale, suddivisa in riquadri, sono raffigurate le sette opere di misericordia corporali: dare da bere agli assetati e da mangiare agli affamati, vestire gli ignudi, alloggiare i pellegrini, visitare gli infermi, visitare i carcerati e seppellire i defunti.Sopra il loggiato, frutto di un sapiente ricamo marmoreo di Andrea Orcagna, troviamo il fantastico Rosone, incastonato come una gemma , in una cornice di 52 teste di santi in formelle; sopra, in dodici nicchie binate, le statue degli apostoli, ai lati i dodici profeti e, agli angoli, mosaici raffiguranti Agostino, Gregorio Magno, Girolamo e Ambrogio .Al suo interno un bassorilievo di pregevole fattura raffigurante il Redentore.

Nella suggestiva visione, dentro sfondi in oro zecchino, si trovano i quattropilastri marmorei scolpiti a bassorilievo. Da sinistra, sul primo pilastrosi trovano i temi della creazione tratti dal libro della Genesi; il secondopilastro illustra le storie di Abramo, patriarca del popolo d’Israele;nel terzo pilastro, si prosegue con le immagini dei principali episodi evangelici mentre il quarto pilastro è interamente dedicato al tema del GiudizioUniversale, ripreso poi all’interno da Luca Signorelli nel fantasticociclo pittorico della cappella di San Brizio.

Sopra i pilastri sono evidenti i simboli bronzei dei quattro evangelisti,opera di Lorenzo Maitani; furono fusi tra il 1320 ed il 1330 e rappresentano, da sinistra verso destra, l’evangelista Matteo (l’Angelo), l’evangelista Marco(il Leone), l’evangelista Giovanni (l’Aquila) e l’evangelista Luca (il Toro). All’apice della cuspide si trova invece l’effige bronzea dell’Agnello di Dio, realizzata nel 1352 da Matteo di Ugolino da Bologna.

Al centro dei simboli dei quattro Evangelisti, sotto un baldacchino bronzeo (ai cui lati sono collocati sei angeli) è la composizione della Madonna in trono con il Bambino; venne posto in loco al termine del secondo progetto della facciata, intorno al 1329.

I mosaici su fondo oro si estendono su ogni parte della facciata e ad eccezione del battesimo di Gesù, realizzato su cartone dal pittore orvietanoCesare Nebbia, le altre rappresentazioni illustrano la storia terrenadella Vergine, con i genitori Gioacchino e Anna, la presentazione di Maria al tempio, l’Annunciazione e lo sposalizio con Giuseppe.

On the solemn central door, divided into squares, seven works of corporal mercy are depicted: give drink to the thirsty, give food to the hungry, dress the naked, lodge the pilgrims, visit the sick, visit the prisoners and bury the dead. Above the loggia, there is some fine marble embroidery by Andrea Orcagna, and we can see the magnificent rose window, set like a gem, in a frame of 52 heads of saints on tiles. Above, in twelve pairs of niches, the statues of the apostles, with the twelve prophets on either side and, at the corner, mosaics depicting Augustine, Gregory the Great, Jerome and Ambrose. Inside there is a bas-relief of exquisite workmanship depicting the Redeemer.

A suggestive vision, inside pure gold backgrounds, there are the four marble pilasters carved in bas-relief. From the left, on the first pillar are the themes of creation taken from the book of Genesis. The second pillar illustrates the stories of Abraham, patriarch of the people of Israel. On the third pillar,we continue with the images of the main Gospel episodes, while the fourth pillar is entirely dedicated to the theme of the Last Judgement, which is then resumed inside by Luca Signorelli in the fantastic pictorial cycle of the chapel of San Brizio.

Above the pillars there are bronze symbols of the four evangelists, the work of Lorenzo Maitani. They were fused between 1320 and 1330 and represent, from left to right, Matthew the evangelist (the angel), Mark the evangelist (the lion), John the evangelist (the eagle) and Luke the evangelist (the bull). At the top of the apex is the bronze effigy of the Lamb of God, made in 1352 by Matteo of Ugolino from Bologna.

In the centre of the symbols of the four Evangelists, under a bronze canopy (on which six angels are positioned) there is a composition of the Madonnaenthroned with Child. It was placed here at the end of the second facade project, around 1329.

The mosaics on a gold background are spread over the whole facade and with the exception of the baptism of Jesus, created on cardboard by the Orvieto painter Cesare Nebbia, the other representations illustrate the earthly history of the Virgin, with parents Joachim and Ann, the presentation of Mary at the temple, the Annunciation and the wedding ceremony with Joseph.
