Kamehameha Schools Kapālama’s approach to safety has four pillars• Physical Distancing & Reducing Density • PPE, Hygiene & Health Monitoring• Cleaning, Sanitizing & Disinfecting • Communications, Training & Coordination

Each of these critical areas helps shape our approach to ensuring our policies and protocols provide the necessary conditions on the ground to mitigate risk of exposure to COVID-19. We identified these pillars through ongoing study of the growing literature on COVID-19, from the Centers of Disease Control, Hawai‘i State Department of Health, Hawai‘i State Department of Human Services, Hawai‘i Association of Independent School, Hawai‘i State Department of Education, American Academy of Pediatrics, and from our local county and State of Hawai‘i emergency orders and proclamations. We also recognize the guidance on COVID-19 continues to evolve and our health and safety approaches must be flexible and may need to shift quickly to ensure we can incorporate any new best practices into our daily school environments.

Physical Distancing & Reducing DensityPhysical Distancing: 3 ft. distance will be maintained between seats all facing forward and at least 6 ft. of distance will be maintained if students are seated facing each other.

Cohorts: Cohorts for younger students will be implemented and will depend on typical class sizes. The same group of students will remain with the same sta throughout the day. Implement cohorts as much as possible for older students.

Buses: Buses will run at 50% capacity, one rider per seat, all riders wearing cloth face masks and face shields; capacity may be increased for siblings sitting together.

Meals: Individually packaged meals and drinks will be delivered and consumed in classrooms OR at designated outdoor locations.

PPE, Hygiene & Health MonitoringFace Coverings: Students, sta , and others will wear either a cloth face mask or a face shield (if health conditions / respiratory conditions / breathing does not allow for mask wearing) at all times except when alone in an enclosed space, alone outdoors, or when eating. In the classroom, both face masks and face shields will be required by students during an initial re-introductory phase. This practice will be reassessed periodically. Face covering breaks may be given and will be determined by each school when students are outdoors in open air and physically distanced (e.g. elementary student recess, eating outside, walking around).

Hand Hygiene: Soap and water and/or hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol will be available for student and sta use. Sta and students will wash or sanitize hands before entering and exiting a classroom, playgrounds, other large communal spaces, before eating meals/snacks, and after using the bathroom.

Stay Home If Ill: For students who are ill and do not come to school, they may return if they are fever free (less than 100.4 degrees) for at least 24 hours without the use of fever reducing medication, and they have no other signs or symptoms of illness. A parent note is required if the student returns within 3 days and a doctor’s note is required if a student is out for 4 days or more.

Health Monitoring: Student temperatures will be taken each day. If a student has a fever or displays any Covid-19 like symptoms, a parent will be called and they will be required to pick up their child in 1-2 hours. A doctor’s note will be required to return to school if your child has one of the more prevalent COVID-19 symptoms (e.g. fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell).

Cleaning, Sanitizing & DisinfectingCleaning and Disinfection: Frequently touched communal surfaces (e.g. door handles, sink handles) will be cleaned and disinfected at least daily. Frequency of cleaning and disinfecting of classrooms will be based on cohorts. If cohorts are in one classroom throughout the day, the classroom will be cleaned/disinfected at least daily. If cohorts are moving throughout classrooms, classrooms will be cleaned and disinfected between use.

Air Conditioning Systems: Windows and doors may be left open to increase circulation of outdoor air in rooms where 100% natural ventilation is prudent. Additionally, air conditioning systems are being improved to include air cleaning technologies like UV lights and/or bipolar ionization.

Shared Use & Personal Belongings: Sharing items that are di cult to clean or disinfect will be discouraged. Students’ belonging will be separated from others.

Communications, Training & CoordinationTraining: All teachers and sta will complete both online and virtual/in-person health and safety training prior to the start of school.

Communication and Coordination: Our COVID-19 Response Team and Campus Leadership Team will continue to become well-versed in the science of COVID-19 prevention and risk mitigation related to specific areas, reading numerous publications, attending webinars, and closely following local and regional regulations and guidelines. Updates will be communicated to parents via email, text, and our website.
